BRACKENFELL: ‘SO MANY YOUNG PEOPLE CHARGED’

Drunk driving disturbs DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

runk driving on Brackenfell roads remains a concern, as does the low conviction rate of this crime. The recently released crime statistics revealed that 160 people were arrested in Brackenfell for driving under the influence (DUI) between the period of 31 March 2018 and 1 April 2019. This crime is detected, as a result of police

action. “Although this number decreased by 32 cases in the previous year, it is still worrisome that so many young people get charged with this crime,” says Brackenfell acting station commander Lt Col Jerome Syster. He says, 18 people were arrested during the latest roadblock held last Friday night (13 September). “It is just not worth it to drive drunk. Especially young people must think about the negative effects drunk driving will have on

their future. If convicted they will have a criminal record, which can only be expunged after 10 years,” he says. Joint roadblocks with the traffic department are held at least once a month in Brackenfell on an ongoing basis. Syster says it is difficult at this stage to determine the exact conviction rate in this regard, as perpetrators often have to wait for months to appear in court and cases often get postponed for long periods. “The police have to wait as long as six months for the results of

the blood tests, before a case can be prepared for court,” he says. This statistic does not compare unfavourably to neighbouring suburbs, according to Syster. In Kraaifontein 408 drunk drivers were arrested in the same period, up from last year’s 208; while Durbanville police registered 174 cases, down from last year’s 355 arrests. John Bond, an activist against drunk driving says the ongoing battle against the scourge of drunk driving is a tough one. V To page 3.
