HOUSE OF ‘ILL REPUTE’: NEGATIVE IMPACT ON SURROUNDING BUSINESS

‘A blemish on area’ DESIRÉE RORKE

L

ocal business have implored authorities to investigate an alleged brothel in Brackenfell, operating amid professional firms, medical practices and even day care centres. Surrounding businesses alleges that the “house of ill repute” is operating under the guise of a guesthouse, to the detriment of neighbouring property owners. In a letter, dated 10 July and addressed to local ward councillor Rhynhardt Bresler, the City’s health department, Brackenfell police and the Brackenfell Business Improvement District (BBID), attorney Jaco Pi-

enaar states that tenants of his client’s property have not renewed their lease, due to the “unsavoury nature of the business” conducted next door. “This has severe financial implications for our client as finding a new tenant is very difficult due to the operations of the guesthouse right next door. “Along with the unsavoury clientele the guesthouse attracts, firms, practices and childcare facilities in the area are losing business,” Pienaar states. To make matters worse, condoms that are continuously being flushed down the toilet at the guesthouse is causing consistent blockages in the sewage lines on the neigh-

bouring property, according to Pienaar. A letter from a plumber confirming this was sent to the City of Cape Town. This persistent blockage, according to Pienaar, is a financial burden as they have to repeatedly pay plumbers to have drains cleared out. Pienaar said the property values in the surrounding area are plummeting and the entire neighbourhood is being brought into disrepute. According to Pienaar’s office, they have to date received only promises from authorities to investigate the matter “being copied into replies, when it is forwarded to the next person”.

BBID manager Cassie van Zyl, says the BBID is aware of the complaints lodged about the property, but that the BBID does not have a mandate to act on complaints about private property. “We can therefor not approach the current tenants or the owner of the property to address the relevant complaints. We supplied Pienaar’s office with the contact details of the City’s health department,” said Van Zyl. Brackenfell police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous, said that the matter is being investigated. TygerBurger is currently awaiting comment from ward councillor Bresler and the City of Cape Town.
