ictims of domestic violence in Brackenfell can now get help fast, before tragedy strikes.

In a plight to protect women and children, who are most vulnerable to this crime, victims of abuse can now apply for protection orders at the victim support unit of Bracken-

fell police station, rather than the Kuils River court, as previously prescribed.

As of Tuesday 10 September, volunteer Judy du Preez will be assisting community members to complete protection order applications every second Tuesday from 10:00 to 15:00, says police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous.

Du Preez has been involved in volunteer work for the past 20 years. She started volun-

teering in Eerste River, where she also resides, with an organisation called Women of Hope. From there she worked as a volunteer for non-profit organisation Mosaic for 10 years.

Outcome of Nersa and City mediation meeting awaited DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he outcome of a mediation meeting between the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) and the City of Cape Town regarding electricity tariffs, is eagerly expected this week.

The mediation meeting between the City and disgruntled customers followed a complaint lodged to Nersa by lobby group Stop COCT on behalf of 13 400 members a fortnight ago.

The meeting took place in Bellville yesterday (Tuesday 10 September).

Various issues escalated to Nersa, were deliberated on. This includes the home user surcharge implemented by the City; the basic charge on pre-paid electricity; the relationship between the municipal bylaws and the Electricity Regulation Act and electricity distribution licence conditions that must be complied with.

According to a memo from Vuyelwa Poswa, dispute resolution officer of Nersa, these issues stem from complaints and

questions posed to Nersa by City customers.

“We are looking to provide more clarity and also capacitate customers on how electricity regulations work within our mandate,” she said.

In a fact-finding meeting on Monday, Stop COCT was given an opportunity to clarify issues with Nersa.

Co-founder of Stop COCT Sandra Dickson said the meeting was fruitful.

“I am hopeful that mediation procedures with the City will be successful,” she said on Monday 9 September.

Issues raised by Stop COCT in recent weeks centres around the affordability of electricity to residents of Cape Town.

Should mediation fail, the legal process of arbitration will follow, according to Nersa legal adviser Mmboniseni Murathi.

Media was not allowed to attend the closed mediation meeting. At the time of print, TygerBurger was still awaiting the official outcome.

“An approved protection order refrains the perpetrator to desist from any acts of abuse stipulated therein. Should the perpetrator contravene that order, the victim can approach the police and lay a charge against the perpetrator for contravening the protection order,” says Crous.

In many cases, transport is a problem for victims and it is difficult for them to get to court for these applications.

With call centres being a key player, 4 764 jobs were created in Cape Town during the past financial year, and more is to come, says James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities.

Vos opened a new British-owned call centre in Retreat on Thursday 30 August, providing 1 200 new jobs.

In addition, talks are currently underway with another international company to open another call centre in Mitchell’s Plain in the next 18 months to provide 1 800 jobs, he says.

“We have to take the jobs to the people. We are currently under tremendous pressure to create jobs with many new people migrating to Cape Town,” he says.

Currently, Cape Town’s unemployment rate stands at around 6% lower than the national average.

“Two of the key sectors, which consistently bring in investment and create jobs are the business process outsourcing (call centres) and green economy industries,” he says. City-funded skills training was provided to 2 109 individuals during the same time, in various industries. “We will

continue to support the training of young people with the most appropriate skills for the sectors that drives demand and makes business sense”.

For the northern suburbs of Cape Town, Vos is working closely with the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) to establish international business in the Voortrekker corridor. “It makes business sense to grow this burgeoning economic area,” he says.

Residents in Atlantis can also expect a boost in their local economy, as the City is currently in talks with a company to open a new factory there to produce gas for solar panels.

“Should this succeed, many jobs will be created for this area.”

These talks form part of the City’s collaboration with GreenCape, which has already facilitated a R550 million in investment resulting in 263 jobs in the City’s energy sector.

“I am extremely excited about these successes.

However, that is not good enough as too many people are still without jobs and we are committed to driving down the unemployment figure even more, as we push ahead with our mission to enhance economic inclusion.”

Local robotics teams excel T

he robotics teams of FutureLab, a technology and robotics education centre in Goedemoed, Durbanville, did exceptionally well in the Western Cape provincial competition of the World Robotics Olympiad.

The provincial competition was held on 3 August at the University of Western Cape. This event, which is hosted every year, consisted of provincial, national and international categories.

The Grade 11 team from Protea Heights Academy in Brackenfell won the open category and qualified to take part in the national competition in Johannesburg on 28 September.

One of the school’s Grade 8 and 9 teams has also qualified to take part in the junior category of the national competition.

A total of 10 teams of FutureLab took part in the provincial competition – four from Protea Heights Academy, three from Gugulethu, two from El Shaddai Christian School and one from Kenridge Primary School.

The three Gugulethu teams all received bronze medals for their attempt, while the all-girls team missed silver by only a small number of points.

The World Robotics Olympiad incorporates science, technology, education and robotics which brings together young people from all over the world to develop their creativity and problem-solving skills through challenging and educational robotics competitions, said Dr Jaco Maritz, founder and chief executive officer of FutureLab.

With Daniël formerly belonging to a nearby church, he is well respected and people often still seek him for spiritual guidance.

Teresa Jones, who runs the children’s care centre called Shelter of Hope, congratulated the pair on their nomination and expressed her gratitude for the work they do for her organisation, and the greater community. “These two people are my spiritual parents. When we’re having events, all we have to do is pick up the phone and tell them what we’re doing for the children and they are always willing to give – always! Whether they have to make themselves short, they never say no. We are very proud of you Pastor Hoorn and Sister Minnie.”

The three women who work with the Hoorn’s to make the food are Zelda Arendsa, Alexia Smith and Kate Phiri, who also assist the community out of the kindness of their hearts, on a volunteer basis.

‘No mowing’ signs put up too late ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

T

he City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department is liaising with CapeNature for an agreement to ensure the long-term protection of protected areas in Durbanville, which usually comes to life with nature’s beautiful array of colourful spring flowers this time of year.

This came after the department was requested by residents to consider not mowing the protected sites during the winter months, or not mowing the areas at all, and only mowing the kikuyu patch at the corner of Bowlers Avenue and St John’s Street in Durbanville.

Nature protected areas are open spaces where a community collectively requests that mowing be postponed.

“The request had been discussed between the relevant City officials and the concerned members of the public. The department is now liaising with CapeNature to get an agreement in place,” Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, said to TygerBurger on enquiry.

“This process will take some time and when the time comes, the City will engage with the public through a public participation process,” she said.

Although this City boasts in a media release of protecting these natural flowers by not mowing during August, this year in Durbanville the plants in certain areas were mowed to the ground at the end of July already.

When confronted by TygerBurger about the mowing, the City insisted that no mowing has taken place at these nature protected areas during the month of August.

“A ‘no mowing, spring flowers blooming/ seeding’ sign was installed during July at the flower blooming site in Durbanville,” Badroodien insisted.

This is how the green public open space on the corner of Bowlers Avenue and St John’s Road in Durbanville was cut to the ground.

However, according to Georina Westraadt, one of the residents campaigning against mowing, the “no mowing” signs were only put up in early August, after the plants were already cut down and she complained about it.

“They only put the signs up if someone complains or requests it. The flowers were blooming late this year due to the colder weather,” she said. The contractors started to mow late in July, she said.

On Monday 29 July she made several phone calls to speak to someone at the parks department in Durbanville to request that “no mowing” signs be put up. She could not get hold of anyone and had to phone again the next day. Although she was then assured the signs will be put up, the fields were all cut to the ground a few days later.

When she complained about this on 5 August, the city official admitted that he could

Tekkies klap by wedloop Die jaarlikse Medihelp Tekkie Challenge-wedlope het Saterdag 7 September by die Jan Krielskool plaasgevind. Buiten die “Battle of the sexes” oor 10 km, waarin die vroue voor die mans wegspring, was daar vanjaar ook ’n halfmarathon (21,1 km). Die 5 km-pretloop was gewild onder gesinne en vriende wat dit rustiger wou vat.

Kinders én hul ouers sal ekspo geniet

ie mediese uitgawes wat gesinne het wanneer ’n familielid met kanker gediagnoseer word, is die rede waarom twee pensioenarisse vanjaar met ’n fietstoer genaamd “Kuspatrollie 2” geld vir die Kinder-kankerstigting (Choc) by die Tygerberg-hospitaal gaan insamel.

Pieter Oberholzer (62) van Stellenberg en George Hamilton (62) van Doordekraal ry vanaf George, waar verlede jaar se toer geëindig het, tot by Beghamond, oos van Port Alfred.

Hulle het Saterdag 7 September uit George vertrek en hoop om Saterdag 15 September die afstand te voltooi.

Verlede jaar het hulle ook op 7 September ’n soortgelyke projek, “Kuspatrollie vir Elleny”, aangepak en van Kaappunt tot

“Daarom kies ons ook nie die maklike roete nie. Ons probeer so ver moontlik op agterpaaie ry. Dit neem ons deur wonderlike natuurskoon, maar ook op verskeie uitdagende bergpasse.

“Die roete sluit die Sewe Passe tussen George en Knysna in, asook die Grootrivierpas, die oorspronklike Boesmansrivierpas en vele ander,” het Oberholzer gesê. Die ryers se vordering kan op Oberholzer se Facebook-blad gevolg word.

Die Proteahoogte-gemeente in Brackenfell bied op Vrydag 13 en Saterdag 14 September hul eerste Kids Expo aan.

Verskeie sake-ondernemings en groepe wat dienste en produkte aan gesinne met jong kinders bied, sal by die ekspo uitstal. ’n Kinderteaterproduksie met die titel Hanse en Worse, wat spesiaal vir die ekspo geskryf is, sal opgevoer word. Hanse en Worse is ’n prettige stuk wat handel oor ’n groepie kinders wat by die Skool vir Hansworse inskryf in die hoop om hansworse te word.

Maar dan verloop sake ’n bietjie anders as verwag …

Die gemeente het reeds by drie vorige geleenthede suksesvolle kinderproduksies aangebied.

“Die gemeente voel al hoe meer geroepe om te belê in die kinders en jong gesinne van die omgewing. Al die akteurs is kinders vanuit die gemeente en die gemeenskap van Proteahoogte.

“Die bedoeling is om die kinders toe te rus met positiewe vaardighede vir die lewe. Die vertel van stories het baie krag en sluit opsies vir kinders oop,” sê ’n woordvoerder van die gemeente.

Hanse en Worse is vol humor en lawwighede, maar daar is uiteindelik ’n kragtige boodskap van goeie nuus vir elkeen wat na die vertoning kom kyk.

Die drie vertonings is as volg: Vrydag 13 September om 19:00, en Saterdag 14 September om 10:00 en 14:00.

Chester al 37 jaar deel van my rugbylewe Ek was nie voorbereid op die skielike heengaan van Chester Williams nie, want ek ken hom al sedert 12-jarige ouderdom.

Die werklikheid moet nog insink, maar sedert ek Vrydagaand 6 September van sy afsterwe gehoor het, sukkel ek om dit te verwerk, want ek en hy het nog die vorige week gepraat oor die Dubai 7’s, wat ek sedert 2012 gereeld bywoon en dan het ons mekaar daar ontmoet.

As rugbyskrywer by Die Burger was hy en wyle Tinus Linee die eerste twee spelers oor wie ek geskryf het. Ons het mekaar by die o.13-proewe vir die WP-liga se Cravenweekspan op Avonwoodpark in Elsiesrivier ontmoet vir die onderhoud. Albei was nog onbekend en het eers begin naam maak toe hulle die o.19-proewe op dieselfde veld in 1988 as senterpaar gemaak het. Ons is almal vertroud met die opgang wat albei in rugby gemaak het totdat albei in dieselfde jaar (1993) Springbokke geword het.

Chester was die skaam een, maar Tienie het nie geskroom om my allerhande vrae te vra nie.

Ek het altyd gehoor van die gesegde dat ouers nie kinders begrawe nie, maar met Chester se afsterwe begrawe ek my tweede “rugbykind”.

Wat ek van hom sal onthou, is die glimlag wat altyd op sy gesig was, die papiertjie of hoed van jonk en oud wat hy met die einste glimlag geteken het en ook ’n geselsie aangeknoop het. Veral tydens die Dubai 7’s het hy nooit níé vir ’n foto geposeer of ’n program geteken nie. Hy het selfs tot op sy hurke gesak om sy bewonderaartjie in die oë te kan kyk. Agterna het ons dan ons geselsie voortgesit en hy was altyd verbaas dat mense hom nog onthou.

Deur die jare het ons mekaar by rugbygesellighede gekry en hy wou altyd weet hoe gaan dit met my en my twee seuns. Hy was verbaas om te hoor Gilroy werk en woon in Dubai.

Chester se werk in die gemeenskap van die Paarl is nie altyd aan die groot klok gehang nie, want hy het nie eintlik van publisiteit daaroor gehou nie. Hy wou liewer die jeug aanmoedig om by sport betrokke te wees as om af te dwaal en by sosiale euwels betrokke te raak.

Toe Tienie bedlêend was, het Chester hom nie versaak nie, maar bygestaan tot sy dood.

Vir my is Chester die verpersoonliking van die gesegde: dit is beter om te gee as te neem, want hy het ’n oop hand gehad vir diegene wat minder as hy gehad het.

Ek was die eerste een wat die scoop gekry het toe die verfilming van Invictus in Kaapstad begin is. Hy het my net laat weet, kom na die rugbyveld van die Tuine-Technikon; ons is besig om tonele hier te skiet. Ek was toe ook bevoorreg om die Hollywood-akteur Matt Damon, wat die rol van Francois Pienaar in die fliek speel, te ontmoet en my selfie te neem.

Tydens sy tyd by die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland as afrigter van die span – eers vir die Varsityskild en nou vir die Varsitybeker, kon ek hom enige tyd bel of e-pos om te vra wat hy nou doen vir ’n storie vir die koerant.

Deur die jare het hy nederig gebly, ondanks sy rugbyprestasies.

Die grootste kompliment wat ek ontvang het, was by die presidensiële geselligheid in Tuynhuys in 1995, toe Madiba my gevra het of ek sy verloofde is en Chester geantwoord het dat ek sy “rugbyma” is. Rus sag, en jy en Tienie sal altyd my eerste rugbykinders wees.

They need to be hanged It is so good to see that finally there are some young people standing up for the abuse, rape and murders of women and children.

It is high time the death penalty is brought back, and the “fat cats” need to be made aware of it. They do not want to bring it back, because they continue to protect their “ex-corrupt” and current party members.

I take my hat off to all who protested on Thursday 5 September at parliament.

The president’s answer to the petition handed to him is not good enough. They cannot just talk the talk, and not act. He cannot say, that men found guilty of rape, murder and abuse, will be sentenced to life, without parole.

No, they need to be hanged, the death penalty has to be brought back. Why must those guilty men stay in prison for life? At the taxpayers’ expense?

No, they have no place in society, nor in prison where they still get lots of privileges. If they think nothing of women and children, they do not belong here either.

Mediese personeel doen hul bes In Augustus was my pa twee keer vir bykans twee weke in die Karl Bremer-hospitaal.

Daar het hy die Sondagoggend onverwags inmekaargesak. Tuis was ek onbewus van sake. Toe ek uiteindelik na my selfoon kyk, was daar twee oproepe en stemboodskappe om die hospitaal dringend te kontak. Onderwyl ek sukkel om ’n oproep hospitaal toe te maak, stop die polisie buite en lig my man in dat ons dringend na die hospitaal moet gaan.

Daar aangekom, vind ek my pa in ’n bed in die noodeenheid. Terwyl ek daar staan, verkyk ek my aan dokters en verpleegsters wat, ondanks ’n beknopte werkarea, te min beddens, ambulanse wat kom en gaan ens. steeds hul bes doen om almal te help.

Ek kom en gaan vir besoektye en sekere gesigte raak vir my bekend. Ek besef: hier word lang skofte gewerk en baie gedoen om lewens te red. ’n Week later word hy tuis siek en gaan in ’n diabetiesekoma. Die ambulansdiens se flink optrede kry hom weer wakker.

Hulle is knap en weet presies wat om in die situasie te doen, terwyl ek paniekbevange is.

Hul kalmte maak dat hy sonder enige teëstribbeling weer per ambulans hospitaal toe vervoer kan word.

Ons familie wil ons dank betuig aan die dokters en

verpleegpersoneel van die hospitaal. Ek haal my hoed af vir hulle wat met soveel empatie en simpatie omgaan met pasiënte. Vir hulle is lewe kosbaar, en elke pasiënt belangrik.

Baie dankie ook aan die Kraaifontein-polisiediens en die staatsambulansdiens vir hul hulp.

Manne en vroue in uniform, julle speel ’n baie belangrike rol in hulpverlening aan die gemeenskap. U diens word waardeer.

Regarding the firefighting crisis (“Firefighting crisis may lurk”, TygerBurger 4 September): My son matriculated more than 10 years ago and he really wanted to join the firefighting team.

He told me, “daddy I want to become a firefighter” and he did everything required from him in order to apply for this job.

Sadly, after so many attempts and applications he could not get in, for no reason.

Now here’s a solution to the problem. Why let these guys work so many hours overtime when a quarter of the country’s youth are unemployed with a matric certificate?

Why not employ more firefighters?

Ricardo a true guardian angel I refer to the letter of the elderly couple who had car problems where the steam was coming out of there bonnet and a guardian angel appeared out of nowhere (“Ricardo is our guardian angel”, TygerBurger 4 September).

I had the same problem recently and a guy stopped also with a bottle of water and his name was Ricardo. I can recall him mentioning he lives in Summer Greens. He gave me his card as he also does catering. I lost the card but I am so sure it was the same person. He was my hero on that day and his act of kindness I will never forget.

ie Hoërskool Brackenfell se dramaleerders het vanjaar puik presteer in die Tygerberg-eisteddfod.

Die skool het nie minder nie as 12 kategoriewenners opgelewer.

In die drama-kategorie is die skool se graad 10-groep aangewys as die projek-kategoriewenner met 95%.

Die graad 10-leerders, wat individueel presteer het, is Deandra Lategan (wenner van voordrag vir meisies met 94%); Ehan Smit (wenner van voordrag vir seuns met 93%) en Dean Lange (wenner van gedramati-

seerde prosa vir seuns met 90%).

Die graad 11-leerders wat uitgeblink het in die individuele kategorieë is Melandri Taljaard (wenner van voordrag vir meisies met 90%); Christiaan Koorts (wenner van voordrag vir seuns met 91%); Sino Mbekeni (wenner van gedramatiseerde prosa vir meisies); Ashley Smith (wenner van monoloog vir meisies met 96%); en Connor Naldrett (wenner van monoloog vir seuns met 99%).

Die Brackies het ’n brug gebou wat slegs 120 gram geweeg het en 244,2 kg kon dra. Wat hierdie span se prestasie so ongelooflik maak, is dat die brug meer as 2 000 keer sy eie gewig kon dra.

The couple is also parents to six-year-old Kgethego.

She attended Arcadia Primary and Arcadia High School during her younger years. “I admit, I was terrified when I attended high school because I was always bullied as I stood out from everyone. I, however, always drew my strength from my faith and was often guarded by my teacher.

My hair was set alight on a few occasions but I was able to push through.

“While studying I was robbed on a few occasions as I was traveling to campus. Despite all the setbacks I remained resilient and kept my goal alive.”

She met her husband while doing community service work in their respective fields of nursing and psychology in Mpumalanga, and are now married for seven years.

“We are both looking to do post-doctoral studies to empower and uplift students. For now, though, I feel like we can be more present with our son.”

Mthimunye said the best advice she can share with a prospective PhD student is to remain focused. “Always keep your goal alive and remind yourself of why you registered to complete the process. Anything is possible.”

he’s a 30-year-old mother, wife and now also a Doctor of Philosophy graduate.

Bronwyn Mthimunye from Protea Heights in Brackenfell earned her PhD in Child and Family studies at the University of the Western Cape on Monday 26 August.

Mthimunye, who is originally from Bonteheuwel, told TygerBurger her tertiary education journey started 13 years ago. In 2007 she started her four-year undergrad degree in psychology. This was then followed by a gap period. Thereafter, she moved on to doing her masters degree in psychology which she said was completed in one year. “Upon completion of my masters in psychology, I did my PhD in child and family studies.”

Walking on the stage on the day of her graduation was one she described as surreal: “This is one thing I’ve waited for, for so long. I’m relieved. I’ve finally given birth to my PhD.” “The most challenging part of completing the PhD was juggling being a mom, a wife and a student. I drew strength from my faith. My husband Katlego, obtained his PhD at UWC’s School of Nursing in April this year. He kept me motivated too. We played supporting roles for one another when times were tough. We encouraged each other during those times and that is the reason why we were able to succeed. After spending time with our son and putting him to bed, we would wake up at midnight and work through the night read-

Beethoven’s work performed The UCT South Africa College of Music orchestra along with the Symphony Choir of Cape Town, will be performing Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at the Sarah Baartman Hall at UCT on Tuesday 15 October at 19:30.

Beethoven spent about four years composing the work when he was at his peak and invested much of himself in it.

He apparently undertook an intensive study of religious music of the past, from monastic chants to Handel’s Messiah (he incorporated the melody of “And He Shall Reign” into his “Dona nobis pacem”) and

of Mozart’s Requiem.

From the meditative “Kyrie” to the ecstatic “Gloria”, through the “Credo” to the softly personal “Sanctus”, which evolves into a rousing “Benedictus”, and finally the theatrical “Agnus Dei”, a full orchestra and choir will sweep the audience through a panoply of emotions. The composer himself wrote the words, “From the heart – may it return to the heart” on the manuscript. The conductor will be Alexander Fokkens.

‘Chester nooit groter as rugby nie’ AVRIL FILLIES

og ’n stukkie van my hart is weg met die heengaan van Chester Williams (49) van Plattekloof, maar ek dank die Here vir die tyd wat ons met hom hier op aarde kon deurbring en wat hy vir rugby vir die land beteken het.”

Dis hoe Dougie Dyers, voormalige afrigter en mentor van Chester, oor sy skielike heengaan op Vrydag 6 September gesê het.

“Ek is trots op wat Chester bereik het en dat hy uit Federasie-geledere gekom het. Hy het hoë standaarde gestel in sy rugby en ook in sy persoonlike lewe en vandag se jeug kan dit alles navolg. Alle eer vir wie en wat Chester was, kom sy ouers, sy ooms en wyle Bill Jacobs (afrigter van die Paarl) toe, want hulle het hom die nodige leiding gegee. Die Albions-rugbyklub moet ook bedank word vir sy bydrae tot Chester en wyle Tinus Linee se rugbyloopbane, want albei was die verpersoonliking van wat Federasie-spelers kan vermag wat nie dieselfde kanse as hulle twee gekry het nie,” het hy gesê.

Vriende en familie beskryf hom as saggeaard, skaam, vriendelik, altyd ’n glimlag op sy gesig en sy mensliewendheid, of net ’n omgeemens. Chester se dood het skokgolwe deur die land gestuur, veral nadat daar onlangs van nog ’n 1995-Wêreldbeker-Springbok, James Small, afskeid geneem is.

Dis op die rugbyveld waar Chester gewys het dat hy sy rugbygene van sy pa, Wilfred, ooms, Avril en Randall Williams, en Adam Dombas, broer van sy ma, wyle Julene, van die Paarl ontvang het. Hy was deel van die seëvierende wêreldbekerspan van 1995 en

was destyds die “gesig” van 1995 wat die land saamgesnoer het.

Die grondslag vir sy rugbyloopbaan is by die Laerskool Klein-Nederberg gelê en afrigters wat ’n groot bydrae tot sy rugbyloopbaan gemaak het, is Dougie Dyers, Charles Williams, Wessel Seconds en wyle Phillip Abrahams.

“Chester het natuurlike rugbytalent gehad, want hy kom uit twee families met rugbybloed, naamlik die Williams- en Dombas-gesinne. Oom Avril het na Errol Tobias die tweede Springbok geword toe hy sy debuut teen Billy Beaumont se Engelse op die Boet Erasmus-stadion in Port Elizabeth gemaak het,” het Charles Williams, een van sy afrigters by die WP-Liga, gesê.

Sy rugbyloopbaan het saamgeloop met Linee s’n en albei het vir die rugbyklub Albions op senter in die Paarl uitgedraf. Daarna is hulle saam vir die WP-Liga se Cravenweekspanne en ook die senior span gekies, voordat hulle albei vir die WP uitgedraf het. In 1993 het albei Springbokke geword en die res is geskiedenis.

“In 1991 was ek die afrigter van die WP-Liga en was baie ongewild by die publiek toe ek albei op senter gekies het, en die destydse kaptein, Wilfred Cupido, weggelaat het.

“Chester was nie ’n prater nie en baie stil. Hy het reeds op skool goeie belofte getoon en het die geleenthede gebruik om suksesvol in rugby te wees. Hy het nooit sy gemeenskap vergeet nie en was die ‘Pêrel van Paarl’, wat die weg gebaan het vir bruin en swart spelers van vandag, wat hul droom om Springbok te word, kon najaag,” het Williams gesê.

Pompies Williams was sy kaptein by Paarl-Liga en hy sê Chester het reeds

Sy pa se familie was almal stoere Albions-mense, terwyl sy ma se familie vir Rangers ondersteun het,” het hy gesê.

Oom Avril sê hy sal sy geselsies met Chester mis.

“Hy was 14 jaar oud toe ek in 1984 Springbok word en het my bewonder.

Ek het nooit gedink ek sal eendag saam met hom in een span speel nie, maar ons het in 1992 vir die SA Weermagspan oorsee as senters uitgedraf. Spelers soos Archie Johnson en Richard Croy, wat ook groot naam in Federasie-rugby was, was deel van die span.

“Hy en Tienie was soos broers en tot Tienie se afsterwe in 2014, was daardie broederliefde nog net so heg soos toe hulle kinders in Paarl se strate was.

“Chester was familievas en ek sal sy vriendelikheid en sy bereidwilligheid om ander te help mis,” het hy gesê. ’n Gedenkdiens word vandag om 13:00 in die Hoofsaal by die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland gehou en Donderdagaand (12 September) om 19:00 word ’n gedenkdiens in die Bolandkrieketstadion in Paarl gehou.

Sy begrafnisdiens word Saterdag 14 September in die Nuweland-rugbystadion om 12:00 gehou. Hy laat sy vrou, Maria, en drie kinders agter.

‘Psycle’ tour raises awareness on dementia TIYESE JERANJI

Talking about preparing for the tour, Clayton a business development manager said they had to put in a lot of hours training to be able to take on this tour.

“I think we were all prepared well and we had everything well organised.

“We knew what we will be doing and when. For me when I was training I trained my body to do more,” he said adding that he also took part in the tour as a tribute to his father who has been battling with dementia for the past 10 years.

Struan, a dairy farmer and also a father of two from Kwa-Zulu Natal said: “We have learned that people affected by dementia in rural communities are often ostracised or even beaten as their symptoms are misunderstood.

Having helpers in these communities to educate and create understanding will hopefully reduce the stigma around mental health issues, empower people to look for early signs of detection and be better prepared should a loved one ever be affected by this cruel disease.”

Clayton added that the disease is misunderstood as people with dementia are preserved as bewitched or possessed by the devil. “We want to change that and we want the carers to help educate the communities and share on what can be done when someone has dementia,” he says.

The team was supported on the road by their logistics manager, Elizabeth Beckerling and cameraman and documentary filmmaker, Luke Veysie.

Motorists reminded to #AlwaysBuckleUp in September Motorists in the Western Cape are requested to buckle up in September. This appeal is being made by the provincial department of transport and public works.

The department will make it a priority to check seatbelt use among drivers and passengers and make sure that they #AlwaysBuckleUp. “We want to emphasise the importance of buckling up, both drivers and passengers, and especially children. Anyone under the age of three years must be buckled up in an age-appropriate child restraint,” said Marion de Vries, assistant director of communication in the department.

“Deaths and disfigurements are possible even in low-speed collisions. The back seat is no safer than the front. Having airbags in your vehicle is no excuse for not wearing a seatbelt.

“Airbags are more effective when combined with a seatbelt. So always buckle up, in every seat, on every trip. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that all passengers are buckled up and will be prosecuted if any child under 14-years-old is found not buckled up,” she says.

In a crash, any unrestrained person continues moving at the same speed as the vehicle was moving at the time of impact. This me-

Hockey challenge with a twist presented The Gene Louw Hockey Supporters Club hosted its first Freakin’ Fast Skills Challenge on 31 August.

A total of 172 participants created an electric atmosphere with their teams all dressed up. They brought fun war cries and great sportsmanship.

The 29 teams hailed from primary schools in Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kenridge, Panorama, Vredekloof, Bellpark, as well as Gene Louw Primary School.

They have competed in eight different skill stations – testing their dribbling, stopping and scoring abilities.

Ethan Lombard of the u.8 Ninja team is giving it his all.

The points were tallied and the top three teams per age group received medals, while each team received an entry into a lucky draw.

Helena Nel is giving it a go with the ball, while (back from left) Lize Scott and Lily de Wet are waiting their turn. They were al part of the u.8 Prime Divas team.

Home buying tips for single women M

any more single women are becoming home-owners, which is a great step forward for financial empowerment.

Carl Coetzee, chief executive officer of BetterBond, however, says women – whether they are career women, single moms or widows – have more obstacles to overcome and more factors to consider than couples or single men when buying a home of their own.

“Sadly, there is still a gender pay gap, for example, which makes it harder for women to save deposits, qualify for bonds and afford the monthly repayments. In addition, home sellers sometimes don’t take single women buyers seriously, so they can have difficulty getting their offers accepted.

Women also have to be super vigilant about proper home security and the safety of the neighbourhood they choose.”

Coetzee says, it helps to work with qualified and experienced estate agents and a reputable originator. He gives the following home-buying guidelines for single women:

Get financially fit Although the banks are very keen to lend to home buyers, they still want to see a clean credit record and are obliged in terms of the National Credit Act to make sure that borrowers can afford the repay-

ments on a home loan. “So check your credit record, fix any issues with bad debt, and pay off as much current debt as you can before you start looking at homes for sale,” says Coetzee.

Save for a deposit Buying a home should not be an impulse purchase but something you plan for with care, so you don’t end up as a “slave” to your bond. It is worth taking a year or two to save a deposit and keep your monthly instalment as low as possible. This will also make it easier for you to qualify for a home loan and may even mean that your originator can get you an interest rate concession.

Obtain pre-approval This will give you a clear idea of how much you can spend on a home and will also make you more competitive as a buyer. Sellers will definitely take you more seriously if they know that a lender has already pre-approved you for a loan.

Do your research Spend time researching and thinking about areas to buy in, the type of property you want and how big it should be, and then do some comparative shopping on the various online property portals, Coetzee says. “If you have children, you might have to compromise and pick an area that is

close to good schools and perhaps a bit further from work or the shops. Or maybe you would prefer to live close to your support network of family and friends. Safety is also paramount, so an apartment or townhouse in a secure complex might suit you better than a freehold home with its own garden – and even more so if you don’t have much time for home maintenance. On the other hand, you might like gardening and growing your own food, or have pets or children who space to play. It’s going to be your home, so you need to choose carefully.”

Once the time has come for you to make an offer on a property, remember this is essentially a business transaction. “This may seem like your dream home, but you should not be blind to the fact that it may have faults that will cost you money to fix, for example.

“It may also be stressful when the seller wants to negotiate the price or when the bank is taking longer than you thought to approve your home loan. If you keep your head and allow the professionals to do their job, things are very likely to work out well.”

Ask questions Never be embarrassed or feel afraid to ask as many questions as you like about the property market in a specific area, the process of financing, buying and taking ownership of a home, the terms of the offer to purchase or sale agreement, or the various costs associated with the transaction, says Coetzee. “This is especially important if you are a first-time buyer, and professional agents and originators will be pleased to assist you as much as you need.

If anyone is reluctant to answer your questions or brushes you off with vague statements, they are not being professional and you should avoid dealing with them.”

Boost your ‘emergency fund’ As a single person, you don’t have a second income to fall back on if you lose your job, fall seriously ill, or need money for an emergency repair. You should aim to save six months’ worth of all your expenses as soon as possible, preferably in an accesstype bond account.

This means your access to your savings won’t be restricted if you need the money in an emergency, but that you will be getting a double benefit if you don’t need it.

You will get a better effective rate of interest than on cash in the bank, and depositing your savings into your home loan account each month will also help you pay your loan off faster and save thousands of rands worth of interest.

Dit was egter grotendeels ’n triomfdag vir Durbanville. Behalwe die o.19A-trofee het HS Durbanville ook die louere weggedra in die o.14A-liga, met Stellenberg tweede en D.F. Malan derde. Malan se tweede gholfspan het aan die Westelike Provinsie se C-liga-eindstryd by die Milnerton-gholfbaan deelgeneem en vir die tweede opeenvolgende jaar in die eindstryd teen ’n baie sterk King David Mowbray-onwikkelingspan van die suidelike voorstede te staan gekom. D.F. Malan is aangewys as die kampioen van die C-liga met ’n wentelling van 128 teenoor 125. Hier is (voor van links) Wihan Gaybba, Zacko Greeff en Helgard Rautenbach. Agter is André Olivier, André May en Henry Bothwell.

Golf day for accident victims to be held Simpsons Attorneys in Bellville is passionate about assisting victims of road accidents, and for this purpose, have chosen Goukam Health as the sole beneficiary for their upcoming golf day on 20 September at the Bellville Golf Club.

Goukam Health is a community programme that facilitates the reintegration of children and adults with disabilities into their respective societies. The creation of the pro-

gramme is aimed at providing for survivors of road accidents who have sustained brain injuries.

‘Ball’ players join hands against femicide EARL HAUPT AND NOORE NACERODIEN Players, coaches, administrators, umpires and other members of both the Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) and the Cape Town Baseball Federation (CTBF) joined hands in their protest against femicide during peak traffic on the Kromboom Road bridge crossing (M5) on Friday 6 September.

Passing motorists gave their approval with continuous blaring of the hooters, extending the outpouring. “A sharp increase in recent cases of femicide has pushed South

African women to the brink. Protestors took to the streets of Cape Town to show their support for women and children and the atrocities they are subjected to. Our human right to be protected in society has been grossly neglected with the increase in crime,” says CTBF public relations officer, Diedré Marquard.

She adds that both the CTBF and CTSA are united in supporting the cause, because #enoughisenough.“We stood in solidarity in protest receiving support from all cars hooting as they passed by. As sporting federa-

tions, we continue to support this cause and pray for justice to be served on all those who disrespect the lives of others,” she adds.

Meanwhile, newly-elected CTSA chair Hayley Carolus was grateful for the turnout experienced at Friday’s demonstration.

“The executive committee wants to thank all members for joining us on Friday. It was stepping stone towards our end goal of creating awareness around gender-based violence. Enough is enough; we need to stand together for all those who are suffering,” she said.

Lorene Beukes, vice-president of CTBF’s administration hopes that the spirit of unification between the two sporting administrative bodies continues.

“It’s something we had to do and have to do. The turnout was awesome; enough to make a point. Thank you to softball, and to all the ladies who were there, because it is really important.

“This is the first time we’ve joined for anything. I hope that the next time we join is for a happier occasion and that our relationship keeps going and gets stronger.”

WOMEN’S RUGBY: THIRD WIN FOR TEAM

estern Province (WP) claimed a third consecutive South African Rugby women’s interprovincial A-section title in searing heat at City Park on Saturday 7 September, beating Border 38-32 in a dramatic final.

The Capetonians had to fight back three times during the match to stay in contention after a strong start by Border, which saw the visitors lead 17-10 at the break. Both sides scored six tries, but two in quick succession late in the second half proved decisive for the champions.

Star winger, Kimico Manuel dotted down in the opening minutes to hand WP an early lead, but a converted try by Border had them back in the lead five minutes later.

Border scored their second try with centre, Mophy Ngwevu, finishing off some good work by the forwards.

It was Manual who again ghosted past several Border defenders to score her team’s second try. Border scored their third try of the first half with Nosi Gada benefitting.

The second half was equally entertaining.

The home side drew level thanks to a Vuyo Maqholo try after a strong break by centre Shaunique Hess.

Border took the lead again though Akhona Dotwana. That 22-17 lead was soon overturned by a converted try from WP, before Border again took the lead with a try.

But the WP defence held out in the last frantic minutes to claim glory.

Twee gratis vierballe is op die spel, waarvan een vir juniors en een vir vroue is. Enige vier juniors (nie ouer as 18 jaar nie) kan ’n e-pos stuur en motiveer hoekom hulle die wenner van die gratis vierbal moet wees.

Dieselfde geld vir die vrouespan van enige ouderdom.
