YOSEF DREAM FOUNDATION: ‘HOPE ABIDES’

Unending hunger DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

H

eart wrenching scenes of little children queueing up for a hearty meal is something volunteers are faced with every week as the plight continues in hunger-stricken areas. Tiny children as young as four are not much taller than the two litre Coke bottles used as markers to maintain social distancing in the ever-growing lines. Since the advent of lockdown last year, Denise September of Yosef Dream Foundation in partnership with Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Community Action Network (Can), every Wednesday cooks a hearty and nutritious meal for the residents of Celeste Street in Scottsdene. “I do not have a set menu as it depends on what ingredients are available. It can be anything from samp and beans, soup and bread, polony smoor sandwiches or curry and rice,” she says. “The Coke bottles were painted and filled with a little concrete, so the wind does not blow it away. This makes it so much easier to indicate where each person should stand as they move to the front of the line for their food,” she explains. Yosef Dream Foundation is a non-profit company with three board members, two associates and a team of volunteers who assist with various projects. “We realised that due to a variety of factors but specifically during the Covid-19 national lockdown that many families go without proper food and shelter. Initially we handed out food parcels, but as the lockdown continued and the need increased, we realised we will not be able to sustain this initiative. So, we identified individuals that were willing to cook for their respective communities and started two community kitchens in Scottsdene and three in

Wallacedene,” she says. The organisation receives no funding from government and had no major donors, yet continued feeding these communities since hard lockdown started in March last year, eventually partnering with Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Can. The Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Can is a network of organisations and individuals who share resources like food, clothing items and so much more to the benefit of the community. “We contribute to and volunteer at events such as food and clothing drives held by the Can network. “Due to the partnership we’ve formed with the members of the Brackenfell-Kraaifontein Can as well as other organisations and individuals, we were able to impact the lives of around 15 000 between May and December 2020 all this with a limited budget.” This she adds gratefully is a major achievement, in line with the motto of Yosef Dream Foundation, which is Dare to Dream despite your circumstances. “Not just for ourselves but everyone who willingly offered their time, money, produce and skills. Those of us who reached out to those in need, who humbled themselves by knocking on so many doors for donations. “The Hebrew word for Hope is Tiqvah, which comes from the root meaning to twist or weave strands of rope together, to make a tool capable of holding a heavy load securely. This is what we have done as a community of people who stepped out of our comfort zone, dared to do something, dared to trust strangers with the same vision, hoping we can make a difference and so weaved our resources, skills, commitment together to carry the load of caring for our community. Through the hope we had, we could impart hope to those we served. This a reward that has no earthly but an eternal value.”

Water cannon at Sassa a mistake NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

olice “dropped the ball” when they fired a water cannon at pensioners and the disabled outside Sassa’s Bellville offices recently, police minister Bheki Cele said last week. The police have come under fire recently for their differing reactions to protesters who demanded the beach open in Muizenberg and those queueing at Sassa’s offices in Bellville. “We should not treat anyone differently,” he said during a visit to police stations in the Cape Town metropole. “There’s been a perception of how we behaved and how we treated pensioners in

Bellville and the incident in Muizenberg (on Saturday).” He said police were “very circumstancial” towards people who sat down in Muizenberg and broke the law. Police used a water cannon to ensure social distancing at Sassa’s office in Bellville after hundreds of people flocked for grants because of the closure of other offices. Minister of social development, Lindiwe Zulu, was also there on the day. Thousands of grant beneficiaries have to reapply for temporary disability grants after they lapsed in December last year. This has led to long queues which have worsened because of office closures due to Covid-19 and staff shortages. Cele promised a full report regarding the

matter and “why police used so much force on Sassa recipients”. “The methods that were used was wrong because they were not violent or protesting.” “In Bellville, you had poor people, vulnerable people going there because they are hungry, some of them are brought in wheelbarrows, some of them are on crutches . . . The issue there was social distancing. That didn’t meet the approach we used. “The approach we used was to handle them like people who are rioting – we used water cannons, we should not have done that.” The provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, also condemned the si-

tuation. In a statement he said he had received the acting provincial commissioner’s report and said it fails to answer elements regarding events on the day; like why it was necessary to use a water cannon. “My unconditional condemnation of the unacceptable behaviour of the police towards Sassa beneficiaries still stands, and I am determined to use all my powers of oversight to get to the bottom of the circumstances that resulted in such a decision being made and implemented by the police.” He said he would approach Cele to request the police’s official report to conduct the necessary oversight. The South African Human Rights Council is also formally investigating the matter

Badisa to acquire drug test kits for clients THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo Local non-profit organisation Badisa Trio seeks to collect five-in-one panel substance use kits to determine whether its clients are using substances. This is to assist the organisation in identifying risk factors and forming a treatment plan. Social worker at Badisa Trio Sjean Smit says these kits are not routinely used to screen prospective foster parents. “However, where it is suspected that prospective foster or safety parents are using substances, they may be asked to consent to a urine screen test. “The kits form part of the process to determine substance use in a family and to monitor patents’ compliance to a contracted treatment or safety plan,” Smit says. The organisation prefers the five-in-one test kits because they detect the five most common substances, which are cannabis, heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, and amphetamines. “These test kits are also preferred because they are easily accessible, fairly accurate and reasonably priced. “By the use of the five panel drug tests, the social worker can get information regarding substance use with a client immediately which saves time, and it is easy to use as only a urine sample is needed.” They can be bought at any local pharmacy and could cost between R30 and R90.

Furthermore, she says these kits are not used as a measure to remove children from the care of their parents or foster parents. Smit says substance is one of the main risk factors in child protection and often a contributing factor when it comes to the removal of children. “When it comes to the removal of children, a lot of aspects need to be taken into consideration.” However, Smit says drug use is not the only reason for removal. “The organisation often deals with cases of drug use, but each situation differs and needs to be assessed through a thorough risk assessment by a statutory social worker. “Our first priority is family preservation and we therefore work with families on an early intervention level to change harmful behaviour in order to keep the child within the family system.” If the intervention is not successful, she says the child may be removed. Smit says the success rate, where caregivers cooperate and commit to a treatment as well as the aftercare plan, are motivated and determined to change their behaviour, is high. “External support from family, friends and the community also play a role in the success of such interventions.” Relapses among those with substance use disorders, without support and protective

factors, remain a possibility. If a person has attended a rehabilitation programme but they are confronted with the same environment and the risk factors did not decrease, relapse is possible.” When a child is placed in alternative care, the children’s court often orders for reunification services to be rendered to biological parents. “After a two-year period, the case manager has to report back to court on progress made in terms of family reunification services,” Smit explains. “The child can be reunified at any time, given that the reasons for removal no longer exist and that reunification would be in the interest of the child.” To ensure that reunions happen, support is given to parents who embark on the road to recovery. Social workers who were involved in the removal of a child remain responsible for managing the case, but Smit says the organisation often refers clients for specialised services such as impatient substance abuse treatment or individual therapy, among others. “A safety and risk assessment will inform the level and nature of services required and families are supported for as long as needed. Our focus is on child protection and services cannot be terminated where children are still at risk.” V For more information call 021 987 2940.

A mother and son will appear in court again soon on charges of fraud, the Hawks say. Zinzi Hani, spokesperson of the Hawks, said in a press statement Antoinette L’ Amour Pender (63) and her son John (38) appeared in the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court last week. They are facing charges of tax fraud exceeding R1 million. “The duo was served with court summons by the Hawks serious commercial investigation team on 26 January,” Hani said.

“John, a registered tax practitioner, allegedly submitted several fictitious invoices to the SA Revenue Services (Sars) on behalf of his mom who is a registered tax payer. “This happened over a period between 2010 and 2016.” Sars did an initial audit probe and it revealed invoices that were allegedly forged. This amounted to a loss of more than R1 million. They were arrested by the Hawks serious commercial crimes investigation team. The duo will appear in court again on 26 February.

The provincial taxi task team is investigating a murder case following Saturday 6 February’s fatal Brackenfell shooting of two Kraaifontein men on the corner of Old Paarl Road and William Dabbs Street. Police spokesperson Capt Erica Crouse says investigations revealed that a white Ford Echo Sport with three occupants allegedly stopped at a red traffic light towards Kraaifontein at 18:39, before a taxi stopped in the next lane. “Information suggests that the passenger of the taxi started shooting at the occupants of the Ford,” Crouse says. “The driver of the Ford attempted to drive into a nearby block of flats and drove into the back of another vehicle.” The taxi, which apparently did not have any registration plates, sped away from the scene. She says the driver of the Ford suffered wounds to his stomach and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A 35-year-old man, who was in the front passenger seat, died on the scene from neck and stomach wounds. “The 27-year-old passenger, who is also from Kraaifontein, who was sitting in the back did not sustain any injuries,” Crouse explains. She says the shooting is believed to be taxi related. “Both victims were involved in the taxi industry. One was a taxi owner and the other a rank manager.” No arrests have been made yet.

Judy Strickland, a trained lay counsellor, established Hope House Counselling Centre in 2004 when she started counselling from her lounge in Lakeside. Her vision was to offer counselling to those who needed it, without fear of the costs. Today Hope House has grown to three counselling centres – in Bergvliet, Kuils River and Table View. In response to the article “Lockdown: The kids are not okay” in last week’s TygerBurger, Strickland says Hope House have qualified counsellors equipped to see children. “We have all Covid-19 protocols in place at our three centres and can counsel in English and Afrikaans. All our counselling is done on a donation basis, so it is affordable to everyone.”

Gang of taxi-robbers caught NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk Armed robbers who terrorised taxi commuters for weeks have been caught. One of the suspects had even been jailed for a similar crime a few years ago. Several robberies happened between December 2020 and January 2021, explains Sgt Anele Siwisa, spokesperson of the Bellville police station. Unwitting commuters were picked up in a brand new taxi, mostly at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre and the two Willowbridge centres. These commuters soon realised something was wrong when the taxi didn’t go on the planned route but instead went on Carl Cronje Drive towards Frans Conradie Drive or Durban Road towards the N1. The guard of the taxi then threatened them by gunpoint, stealing personal belongings like cellphones, cash and bank cards.

He demanded the pin numbers of bank cards and withdrew money at different locations after the robbery. In many cases, victims were tied up with cable ties. They were later dropped off. Some victims reported how they saw the guard and taxi driver removing the number plate before they could exit the taxi. After taking all the information into account they saw a similar taxi on video footage, where they identified its number plate. The taxi was later flagged on licence plate recognition (LPR) cameras and pulled over in Kuils River on 29 January. The driver (31) was interviewed and inside his taxi police found a firearm holster, cable ties and a bank card. He later confessed to the crimes and appeared in court two weeks ago. Two other suspects were apprehended last week and have since appeared in court.

N

“Baie boere moes hul kuddes verkoop omdat daar nie weiveld of genoeg voer was nie.

Fill jars to help Sea Scouts The DK Sea Scouts need help to fill jars with soup ingredients in their annual “Better world for BP” challenge. The Jars of Hope project is held in aid of the needy in honour of Sir Robert Baden-Powell’s birthday on 22 February. Baden-Powell (BP) founded the Scouting movement in 1908 in England and he always encouraged others to “try and leave this world a little better than you found it”, says Rachel Johnson, treasurer of DK Sea Scouts. DK Sea Scouts would like to invite members of the community to celebrate Baden-Powell by helping them with their chal-

lenge. In order to take part, simply layer the following ingredients in an empty coffee or mayonnaise jar: one cup of rice, one cup of soup mix, one cup of lentils, one unwrapped stock cube and one packet of soup powder. The aim is to collect as many jars as possible by 22 February for distribution in Fisantekraal. The DK Sea Scouts will also be cleaning Fisantekraal with their families during the month of February to honour their founder. V Contact Angela Hillier, scouts group leader of DK Sea Scouts, on 072 867 9911 to arrange collection of filled jars.

“Sierra Animal Foundation is hosting our first Covid friendly Car wash fundraiser at Traffik Car Wash on 28 February in aid of Pit Pals and Change for the Better Foundation. Our drive through wash and dry is done while you enjoy the safety and comfort of your own vehicle, limiting any interactions from our volunteers. We have time slot bookings on Quicket to ensure that you have the best possible experience and that you do not wait too long in the queue,” says a spokesperson. V Tickets available on https:// www.quicket.co.za/events/101117-sierra-animal-foundation-car-washfundraiser/#/

POWER SERIES: HISTORIC VICTORY FOR COOK

Three wins for race M

elani Cook, driving her father’s BMW E36 325, made history at Killarney in Round 1 of the Power Series on Saturday 6 February as she not only became the first woman driver in living memory to win a saloon car race outright, she went on to score a hard-fought hattrick of three Bejo Trustees Fine Cars wins in one day. Cook started Race 1 in fourth behind Gunther Appelgryn, Jan Koekemoer and the astonishingly quick Stuart Greig, but powered past Greig and Appelgryn on lap three to take the lead. As she gradually eased away to finish 3.38sec clear of the field, Appelgryn, Koekemoer and Rodney Green fought it out for second in a monumental dice that saw them finish in that order, covered by less than a second. Race 2 was a lot tighter; Koekemoer ran a close second to Cook for two laps before falling victim to Appelgryn. Appelgryn and Green were the

only drivers able to stay with the Cook BMW in Race 3, as she eased home to her third win of the day. It was a battle of the giants in the Sports & GT category races as local hero Steve Humble in the Judd-powered Harp Pilbeam and SA Endurance Series champion Franco Scribante in his freshly rebuilt Porsche 997 TT fought it out for line honours. Scribante led the first six laps of Race 1 before being overtaken by Humble – but the fight wasn’t over, as Scribante dived down the inside going into Kfm Corner at the start of lap eight and the two came together. Externally, the damage to both cars seemed minimal, but the Porsche refused to shift out of sixth gear and Scribante cruised round to the pits to retire while Humble went on to win by almost nine seconds from Dayne Angel and his father Marcel. The Scribante Porsche was back for Race 2 and running as hard as ever, but Humble was on top form,

posting the fastest lap of the day on lap four, and there was no way the visitor was going to challenge for the win. Scribante finished a fine second, while Dayne Angel beat his father for third by just 0.01sec after a superb dice. Marco Busi and Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart shared the honours in the Cheaper Cars GTi Challenge races with a win apiece. Veteran Jacques Ackerman not only posted the first race win of his career in the South Motorcycles Superbike Series, he made it a double! Pre-race favourite David ‘McFlash’ McFadden wisely withdrew on the morning of race day after working through the night to repair Brett Roberts’ Yamaha, which suffered a gearbox failure during practise on Friday, setting up an epic duel in Race 1 between Ackerman and David Enticott. Enticott was unable to stay with Ackerman in Race 2, and was caught in the closing stages by Le Cok, Racoupeau and Cragg.

Spectators look on as 18-year-old Robin Ludick signals to the judges that she has finished her round, a compulsory step at the end of every round. PHOTO: NATALIE VARNEY
