ew areas are being targeted for burglaries, CBDs remain crime hotspots, and integrated services by police and other crime fighting entities will meet the challenges head-on as the festive season draws near.

This was the message from Brigadier Darius van der Ross, commander of the Bellville police cluster, which includes Bellville, Parow, Goodwood and Bothasig.

The cluster released their mid-term crime statistics at a media briefing last Thursday.

He cited the biggest contributing factor to this increase in crime as that within the two CBDs of Bellville and Parow – involving robbery of money, jewellery and cellphones as items of choice.

“This is due to the massive influx of commuters,” he said.

Van der Ross also said housebreaking has seen a slight increase.

“We call it a stabilisation. Bellville specifically has seen an increase, but this category is down in the others. The Richwood and Stellenridge areas that were never part of our crime statistics in previous years, are seeing a massive increase in recent time,” he said.

“The area of concern in Bothasig is Burgundy Estate, but there is an integrated service of police and security companies in the area. But people should be made aware that this is a new trend in terms of geographic area for housebreaking,” he said.

Greater Tygerberg Partnership turns 1 Last Thursday there were quite a few more reasons to celebrate than just the first successful year of the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP).

In her speech, executive Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille, assured the audience the GTP can count not only on the City of Cape Town’s support, but also on that of the provincial government.

“You can count on the city’s co-operation.

We are very serious about development in this area,” she said. “I will approach provincial government as well. I will ask for funding from Premier (Helen) Zille, so that provincial departments also contribute to this project.”

De Lille thanked everyone involved in the GTP for their hard work the past year, but said “the work has just begun”. She urged those involved to foster enthusiasm specifically among the business fraternity to support the in itiative.

“We cannot do this alone. We need to build partnerships with businesses, politicians, academic institutions, etc. We must stand together and take responsibility for the development and growth of this area.”

sa Shezi, said it was a pleasure to look back at what they had achieved as it started out fulfilling its mandate to turn the greater Tygerberg area into a model of growth for the City of Cape Town.

One of the principle aims of the partnership was to create an environment in which people wanted to invest, where business growth takes place, and a safe and secure environment is created for citizens to work, play and live in.

Shezi thanked the three chief supporters of the partnership: the City of Cape Town who provided funding for the establishment of the partnership, Sanlam which has provided a true business partnership, and academics from academic institutions in the area. “Businesses should come on board more,” he said.

He has big dreams for the Greater Tygerberg district. “Every area boasts a unique selling proposition and we have a number of these already. When you think of the area many people will tell you they think of space, space to grow, space to do business in, space to educate their children at excellent schools, space to live and to be secure.

We’d like to add to become a knowledge hub where we can offer the finest networking skills. We’d like eventually to be seen as Af-

rica’s Silicon Valley,” said Shezi.

He made it clear the GTP has practical plans in place to achieve these goals to fight urban decay and attract investment into the area.

Executive director of the organisation, Tienie le Roux, thanked everyone for their participation thus far and shared their vision of a sought-after Tygerberg area.

“This year, we saw the launch of our Future Tyger project where people have been able to take advantage of cutting-edge technology to engage with us on building models of what we want our area to look like. But we hope to bring to the greater Tygerberg area also international ideas, designs and concepts by way of our participation in the World Design Capital competition early next year,” he explained.

“All these developments have been positive steps in the right direction, but there remains much work to be done. We will be approaching you in the near future for your support. The endeavour we are busy with is a massive one; it can only be done through building solid partnerships.

“We need to keep sight of our vision and our goals to spur us on in order for this area to achieve its potential,” Le Roux said.

Could you be a movie crit?

Very often it is the people in our communities that are at the forefront of news – they observed the accident around corner, have the inside info on the murder down the street, and know all the hidden jewels within their communities.

One such person is Mary Anne Murray, known among her friends as Mam, who is the first recipient of TygerBurger’s Citizen Journalist of the Month award.

Mam who hails from Durbanville, has a passion for art, a keen knowledge on herbs, and most importantly a very curious personality with an interest in human behaviour.

“I keep my eye out for tit-bits of news mostly satisfying my own curiosity, ” she says.

Mam has also been sharing these tit-bits of news with TygerBurger for a very long time, and more recently became one of our citizen journalists when she also started writing stories on happenings in her community.

Even more recently Mam played a vital role as TygerBurger’s citizen journalist on

the scene of a robbery passing on information and photos.

“TygerBurger shows its wisdom by creating this award,” Mam said as she accepted her award. “I feel very humble and honoured to receive this award as the first recipient. It is a significant award as I think it is the ordinary man on the street who is often at the cutting edge of local news – may the campaign encourage a wider range of newsworthy stories to everyone’s benefit in the long term.”

Mam says she has always been an avid fan of TygerBurger. “I love contributing to such an efficiently distributed newspaper with such a positive focus.”

She is a semi-retired chartered accountant who discovered her creative side in later life. With the extra time on her hands, she does a great deal to promote local artists and takes on interesting projects from care situations, to being the executor of estates, getting involved in church events. “These activities allow me to meet many people.”

On the literature side she also contributes to the Catholic church’s weekly newspaper

TygerBurger received an email from a reader who has reservations about our recent drive to encourage readers to contribute their stories to our website as so-called “citizen journalists”. TygerBurger’s comment on his concerns follows at the bottom.

Here is what Jaco Wolmarans, a seasoned journalist himself, has to say: I read with distress Cecilia Hume’s article calling for citizen journalists in TygerBurger of 23 October. She is, in fact, writing her own obituary as a journalist.

Media the world over are enlisting the services of citizen journalists, ostensibly to have broader reach into communities, but in effect trying to save on salaries.

You pay for what you get. And if you don’t pay, you have to be realistic about potential consequences.

As a former Naspers journalist, I often read in this very publication how even “trained” journalists don’t even know the difference between “alleged” and “apparent” any more (“na bewering” vs “na verneem word”), a simple distinction that leaves the publication open to libel cases.

This same publication now wants to chance using citizens with even less training – or none at all. You have to question that logic from the bean counters.

People like me spent four years getting a post-grad qualification in journalism in order to not only learn how to write a wellresearched and fair article, but also how to avoid the legal pitfalls inherent to news reporting. Management is slowly squeezing us out of the system in order to save money.

They must be prepared to carry the consequences too.”

Cecilia Hume, digital editor of TygerBurger, responds as follows: The words “citizen journalist” send a very cold chill down most journalists’ spines. I myself had to study four years to learn how to research and write a factual, balanced, objective article, not even to mention suffering as an intern (or even worse, an unpaid shadow) to learn and obtain very necessary experience and get my name out there. And now we need to make space for articles and photos by the average man on the street, the people who have no idea how much blood, sweat and tears go into our passion?

Unfortunately, thanks to the internet and constantly developing new technology, the days that newspapers only had to compete with other newspapers (and on a more national level, radio and television) are gone.

It is something we as journalists have to accept. Even online media have to adapt to the rate at which people churn out news on other platforms, constantly being scooped by social media. People don’t phone the newspaper first any more. The police respond only to queries because they are “not allowed to feed us negative stories”. People at the scene of a crime or accident who shot a video or took a photo will post it on Facebook or YouTube immediately for the world to see before even thinking of notifying their local newspaper.

Once you start looking at in-depth readership figures, it is alarming to see the effect one story that is trending on social media before being published on your website, can have on your readership figures.

The fact is citizen journalism is growing, whether we as media houses publish them or not. So why fight it if we can use it to our advantage by giving them a platform to get published and allow them to feed us information? This does not mean good old objective, fact checking journalism has to go down the drain. Every citizen journalist article goes through the same editing and fact checking process a qualified journalist would face, before we publish it. In many cases these articles present an opportunity for a well researched follow-up by an actual journalist.

Triangle Industrial CID a huge success Plans to improve the Bellville industrial area, better known as Triangle Farm, are well on their way.

The Triangle City Improvement District (CID) is on top of their game. In fact, they are so proud of their efforts, they claim it has earned the area the title of being the safest, cleanest and most central industrial area in the Western Cape.

The group, under the auspices of the City of Cape Town, has been operating in the business area since August 2008, serving about 181 companies here.

“The CID provides services that are consistent with the city’s Integrated Development Plan by providing ‘top-up’ services to the city, and continuously striving towards building confidence in the area as a safe, attractive and clean environment in which to conduct business,” said Lynette van Lill, manager of the CID. Lynette said they’ve had numerous successful joint operations to combat crime with the police, Traffic Services, Law Enforcement, the Metal Theft Unit, and security companies.

She cited some of the projects that were launched: two fences were erected bordering the two railway lines of Transnet and Metrorail, as well as lamp poles, litter bins,

and “no dumping” boards were installed.

Also as part the CID’s operations, trees were planted and nine sections of landscaping were completed in August this year.

“The CID area is patrolled 24/7 by a security company, while the area is kept clean by a cleaning service,” she said.

Lynette said good relationships have been formed with the City’s Parks, Solid Waste and the Roads and Stormwater departments.

“Vacant properties are scarce and in huge demand in Triangle Farm,” said van Lynette “and will be available on the CID’s website for viewing at www.trianglefarmcid.co.za.

Van Lill mentioned that as part of their social responsibility towards the community they have embarked on a recycling project to assist a neighbouring school in Bellville South.

“This project was launched in April 2012 with the assistance of the business associates in the CID area. All proceeds from this project are used towards improvements at the school,” she said.

She invited businesses to assist by making a contribution to this worthy cause.

Minister takes stock of medical centres L

diseases such as smoking, alcohol abuse, lack of exercise and unhealthy diets, substance abuse, lack of proper housing and overcrowding.

“We also know that the Western Cape is one of the largest recipients of immigration from other provinces and beyond. The Census 2011 has confirmed this. Staff also inform us that there is an increasing proportion of foreign speaking patients attending facilities, although this is not quantified.”

One of the ways used to measure how satisfied clients and patients are with the level of health service is through the Complaints and Compliments system.

The department developed a comprehensive set of strategies to address waiting times, including measuring waiting times through electronic methods on a daily basis.

Waiting times can be reduced by better management of patient influx through appointment systems; reduction of congestion through alternate sites of medicine delivery; effective triage and queue management; better signage and communication with patients, are all among some of the suggestions on the table.

The department has also put in place a change management process which will address organisational culture including staff attitudes.

This programme will focus on behavioural change to achieve a stronger focus on preventive care, pro-active management of workload and burnout risk, and strengthening frontline staff skills to build trust and empathy. Botha said legislation that will see the implementation of the Independent Health Complaints Committee is in the process of finalisation.

Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, told media at a briefing at Tygerberg Hospital last week that a sample of 23 000 clients surveyed in this financial year showed that clients are satisfied with the way they are treated by doctors (87 %) and nurses (88 %).

But 76 % felt they wait a long time before getting their folder and their medication.

“At present our staff at hospitals and emergency centres are buckling under the pressure. Our emergency centres are treating many more patients than they were designed for.

“We are hoping and will be making a representation to National Health and Treasury that the province will be compensated adequately in the equitable share allocation of the budget for the significant increase in population growth of the province,” Botha explained.

“The emergency centres are the entry point into the public hospitals and therefore face the brunt of the pressure. For this reason the health department has in the past few years systematically improved the infrastructure within emergency centres,” he said.

According to him, the condition of the patients coming through the doors of the emergency centres are a direct result of the burden of disease within the larger population. This in itself is a function of upstream factors such inter-personal violence, road traffic accidents, risk factors for chronic

DAR not praised by all its commuters TINA BURGER

A 76-year-old senior citizen from Brooklyn, Sina van Wyk, says she was badly treated by the City of Cape Town’s Dial-a-Ride (DAR) service.

She claims that the service is terrible and after she allegedly contacted them on several occasions they refused to help her as they were always overbooked.

However, Ward 55 councillor Bernadette le Roux sheds some light on the topic.

“The procedure is that you have to book at least one week in advance. Many people are confused. The confusion sets in when a person request a booking and they are told DAR is fully booked for that date.

“However, we will keep them on a waiting list,” Le Roux said.

Furthermore she added that people just presume that if they have not heard from DAR that it is fine to expect the service for that day. Nevertheless, they are told they will be contacted should there be a cancellation,” she said.

But Van Wyk said she had made bookings well in advance and also qualifies for the service since she makes use of a wheelchair.

“I phoned to book a service multiple times, and was told that they where fully booked, even when I tried to book seven days ahead of time. This is just simply impossible,” Van Wyk said.

She also said that she has no other means

of transport.

“I can barely lift my legs. The service’s head of department takes in millions while we, who are dependent on them, are left without transportation,” she said.

Van Wyk also adds that when she calls the service’s contact number she has to wait 10 minutes at a time before an operator answers the phone.

But Le Roux said all disabled persons wishing to use the system need to be assessed.

“The disabled homes will be visited. Individuals need to phone DAR and make an appointment. They will then be picked up and taken to Tygerberg Hospital and taken back home. This needs to be done by the end of the year,” Le Roux said.

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member of transport for Cape Town takes on Van Wyk’s allegations.

He said that currently the city is operating with 30 vehicles while there are more than 6 000 registered applicants, many of whom are on a waiting list.

This might be one of the reasons why enquiries are back-logged and phones are constantly ringing.

“Currently the service has 6 000 users, and we are currently only able to transport an average of 296 passengers per day.

“We occasionally receive complaints about the service but these complaints are not unique to the current service provider...

Ons het ’n paar vrae aan Jonas Bovijn en Hendrik Botha gerig, wat op 15 November amptelik die universiteitslewe groet.

Hendrik sê om dié gesogte toekenning van die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) te ontvang, behels ’n kombinasie van kriteria.

Een hiervan is dat ’n finalejaar-student tydens sy studieloopbaan ’n deurlopende gemiddeld van 75 % vir akademiese prestasie moes behaal het.

Dié studende moes ook uitgeblink het op ander gebiede. “Daar was verskeie insluitingskriteria: akademiese prestasie, sport, kultuur en gemeenskapsinteraksie,” sê Hendrik.

“Dit is wel beperk tot studente van die US wat in hul laaste jaar van studie is, of aan nagraadse studente wat presteer het in hul meesterstudies.” Hendrik se gemiddelde van sy tweede tot vyfde jaar was 81,3% – kort op die hakke van Jonas.

Die toekennings, aangebied deur die Stellenbosse Instituut vir Gevorderde Navorsing op 15 Oktober, was volgens Hendrik, “ ’n reuse-eer, en ek was ongelooflik dankbaar. Dit voel goed dat ek kon presteer in iets waarvan ek baie hou,” sê hy.

Jonas sê dit het goed gevoel om erkenning te kry van die breër universeitsgemeenskap teenoor slegs die gewone Tygerberg-prysuitdelings. “Ek het ook ’n diensleweringstoekenning gekry – so dit was

ook lekker om te weet die universiteit erken ook studente wat op ons kampus bydraes maak.” Jonas se beroepskeuse fassineer hom. “Wetenskap en biologie was nog altyd vir my baie interessant, en medies was vir my die ideale kombinasie van wetenskap, menslike kontak en ’n werk met baie afwisseling,” sê hy.

Vir Hendrik was medies ook ’n natuurlike keuse. “Dis ’n kombinasie van met mense werk en ek is baie geïnteresseerd in hoe die menslike lyf funksioneer,” sê hy.

Hendrik sê ook hy het ’n passie om as algemene praktisyn te werk “en om alledaagse mediese probleme te hanteer”.

Die twee slimmes stem saam dat jy ’n passie moet hê vir wat jy doen, gekoppel aan “harde werk, harde werk, en nogmaals harde werk”, volgens Jonas. Ondersteuning van hul gesinne het ook baie gehelp.

Wat doen hulle vir ontspanning? “Ek is baie lief vir wynproe,” sê Hendrik. “Dis altyd wonderlik om af te vat, saam met vriende na ’n mooi wynplaas te ry. ’n Mens kry dan ’n bietjie natuur, vriende, en as bonus, . . .wyn,” skerts hy.

Jonas is meer bedees. “In (ons) finale jaar was dit maar dikwels ’n stryd om tyd in te win vir ontspanning! Ek geniet dit om met familie en vriende te kuier, of om ’n boek te lees. Musiek is my ander groot passie.”

Hendrik sonder dr. Arina Schlemmer, hoof by die Kraaifontein-daghospitaal, uit as sy groot inspirasie. Vir Jonas is dit effens moeiliker om iemand uit te sonder, sê hy.

“Baie verskillende rolmodelle loop oor ’n mens se pad oor die ses jaar.”

Jonas doen volgende jaar sy internskap by die Tygerberg-hospitaal, terwyl Hendrik volgende jaar by George se staatshospitaal gaan werk.

Police and neighbourhood watches have again warned against the illegal crossing of railway lines.

This comes after a Gr 11 learner from Malibu High School in Blue Downs, Bevan Andrews (16), was killed by an oncoming train last Tuesday after reports that he was wearing headphones while crossing the tracks.

“There was also a schoolboy from Bellville killed earlier this year by a train while wearing headphones,” said Captain Fienie Nimb, Bellville police’s spokeswoman.

“Do not take short-cuts over the railway tracks, or climb through holes in existing fencing. Use the designated pedestrian crossings. And yes, headphones are a big no.

“They make it impossible for you to hear. Also no typing on cellphones, because your attention is not on your surroundings. Trains may be coming on full speed and you can easily misjudge the distance.

“Don’t take chances,” she warned.

Pierre van Wyk, chairperson of the Labiance Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), was able to take pictures of last week’s tragic accident. He said he’s very concerned about this seeming disregard for railway tracks by pedestrians.

“Many people, children and junior school kids, mothers with prams and even a guy with a wheelchair have crossed and tried crossing the railway line – often in front of oncoming trains,” he said.

“We as the NHW have warned against such an unfortunate event happening, but it has fallen on deaf ears with Metrorail.

There used to be a fence, but due to vandalism it has been destroyed, thus providing easy access across the railway lines and the road bridge is a mere 30 metres away.

“I have often seen people on the tracks and one does not hear the sirens from the trains to warn pedestrians if they are on the tracks,” he said.

Pierre said Metrorail had indeed employed security guards because of theft of signals and cables along the railway line, “but they do nothing to stop people crossing the line,” he said.

“School kids from the nearby Bellville Technical High School (HTS) cross the lines on a daily basis.

“Parents drop their kids off on the Glenhaven side to walk across the tracks to go to HTS.” He said grandparents even walk their kids back and forth to the primary school in Labiance.

“I have spoken to the people, parents and kids on numerous occasions and have even been threatened with violence from parents as we were closing holes cut in the then existing fence.”

“Our condolences go out to the family of the child,” he said.

‘Skrik wakker, politici, polisie!’

Veiligheid is een van die regte waarop burgers in ’n land aanspraak behoort te kan maak. Trouens, in enige land met ’n redelike hoë beskawingspeil is dit ’n basiese reg van elke burger: om beskerm te word teen rowers en moordenaars.

Waarom gebeur dit dan nie in Suid-Afrika nie? Ons word immers voorgehou as die sogenaamde modelstaat in Afrika.

Hoekom moet mense dan maandeliks honderde rande bestee om die dienste van sekerheidsmaatskappye te huur? Waarom moet ons buurtwagte begin? Waarom moet ons agter hoë mure, veiligheidshekke en diefwering skuil? Waarom moet ons heeltyd aan handsakke klou en oor ons skouer loer wanneer ons in winkelsentrums of op ’n sypaadjie loop?

Waarom moet ons in ’n land leef waarin ’n mens se lewe minder werd is as ’n selfoon of ’n beursie met ’n paar rand in?

Is dit omdat die polisie nie bevoeg is om hul basiese take te verrig nie? Of is dit omdat die regering blind is vir die krisis waarin ons land verkeer?

Moontlik is dit ’n kombinasie van albei. Daar is deesdae hordes kriminele onder lede van ons polisiediens. Meer en meer lees ons van polisiebeamptes wat oneerlik optree of selfs burgers aanrand. Verder word die bekwaamheid van ons polisiehoof heeltyd bevraagteken. Ten regte ook – sy was nooit ’n dienende polisielid nie, sy het geen idee van wat daar op grondvlak gebeur nie.

Boonop is van die vorige polisiehoofde afgedank weens korrupsie-, bedrog- en diefstalklagtes.

Red nou ’n land met sulke leiers!

Maar heel moontlik lê die grootste probleem by die regering en die ligtelikheid

waarmee hulle ons misdaadprobleem beskou. Onlangs nog het politici van die regerende party gesê die opposisiepartye oordryf die misdaadprobleem.

Waar woon dié regeringspolitici – op Mars? Sien hulle nie wat om hulle aangaan nie, of probeer hulle met politieke retoriek ’n rat voor die oë van landsburgers draai? Of is dit bloot verkiesingspropoganda vir volgende jaar se stemmery?

My wekroep aan die regering en die polisie is: Skrik wakker!

Fietsryers moet op pad voorkeur geniet Ek kan nie help om dadelik na die pen te gryp om Naamloos se gekerm oor fietsryers te beantwoord nie. (“Fietsryers hou nie by padreëls”, TygerBurger, 23 Oktober) Geagte Naamloos, jy sal vind dat al daardie fietsryers ook motors het en bestuur en dus net soveel aanspraak op die pad soos jy het. Ook dat hulle normaalweg alle padreëls gehoorsaam.

Waar sou jy voorstel moet fietsrenne gehou word? Hoe gaan jy iemand verby as jy die heeltyd agter hom moet ry? Hoe bly jy uit die wind as jy alleen ry? As jy die padreëls geken het, sou jy geweet het dat fietsryers en voetgangers voorkeur geniet. Jy het dus die arrogante houding van dat die hele wêreld moet padgee voor jou, en nie hulle nie. Kry tog vir jou ’n fiets en gaan neem aan ’n fietsren deel, sodat jy kan uitvind waaroor dit gaan en skielik besef dat een persoon in sy motor nie die belangrikste op aarde is nie.

Fietsrenne vind miskien een keer in twee maande op openbare paaie plaas. Ek stel derhalwe voor jy gaan kyk op die fietsren-webwerwe waar dit plaasvind, sodat jy daar kan gaan ry om jou bloeddruk te verhoog.

It only makes sense to run a service now. MyCiTi says it is only going to run here in three to four years’ time. It is not fair that Golden Arrow only runs from Durban Road into Cape Town. Please consider extending your routes as a matter of urgency.

A while ago the trains were troublesome and they ran a luxury coach service from all affected stations in the northern suburbs from 05:45, it took 20 minutes into the CBD! Why can’t Golden Arrow do the same? We don’t need luxury, just buses running on time and regularly. Also, the last bus back from Cape Town at say 20:00? Please consider.

Volunteers can join Law Enforcement The city has embarked on a drive to recruit volunteer auxiliary officers as Law Enforcement officers as a means to boost its operational capacity and have more feet on the ground, without a massive impact on its budget. This is a first in the country, given the scope the officers will have.

The City of Cape Town approved the law enforcement volunteer agreement at a full council meeting on 30 October. This is in further support of the establishment of an auxiliary law enforcement service, which council approved a year ago.

“The city is keen to tap into the enormous volunteer spirit that exists in the metro and the volunteer auxiliary officers’ programme is but one way of building on this spirit and helping people take back their communities,” said the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith.

The last 12 months have been spent clarifying legal and logistical challenges around this precedent-setting initiative, like insurance and liability and how the volunteer auxiliary officers would report for duty.

The city has been ably assisted by its legal and human resources departments and is

now ready for the next step: the deployment of the first 39 officers.

Some 400 applications will be assessed during intakes over the next 12 months.

The volunteer auxiliary officers will be deployed alongside experienced Law Enforcement officers in accordance with the city’s needs, but will also patrol their own communities.

They will be issued with uniforms, and be able to carry weapons if they pass the competency test, seize goods, enter city-owned properties and make arrests if need be.

The volunteer auxiliary officers are being recruited from neighbourhood watch structures across the Cape metropole. They will work a minimum of 16 hours a month, without compensation; they should be in good health and have been subjected to a rigorous criminal clearance process.

The city hopes to grow the number of volunteer auxiliary officers by at least 400 in the next two years.

Volunteer tasks will include street patrols, but also administrative and support functions, so residents who are not fully mobile can also apply.

Winckler een van sterre by Vallei­aand Heinz Winckler is een van die sterre wat Vrydagaand (8 November) in Tygervalleisentrum se tweede Vallei van die Sterreaand gaan optree.

Die eerste een het verlede maand plaasgevind en was ’n reuse-sukses.

Absoluut, solank my gasheer ook is...

4. Wat was sover vir jou ’n hoogtepunt van 2013?

Die vrystelling en sukses van die Zzzz Lullabye-projek van my vrou en haar beste vriendin, wat ek vervaardig het. Dan ook die vrystelling van my nuutste album, “Jy’s bonatuurlik”.

5. Wat lê voor vir jou in 2014?

Ek hoop om terug te trek Kaap toe, om “Jy’s bonatuurlik” verder te bemark, om te begin skryf aan ’n nuwe album, ’n familiereis na die VSA en hopelik om later die jaar weer soontoe te gaan vir nog ’n bietjie werk daar.

About 165 items are up for auction and include items with a starting bid from as low as R5 for a framed 1979 Cape Town Philatelic Exhibition souvenir sheet to as high as R5 000 for a once-in-a-life-time superb Austria collection in three DAVO albums with transparent mounts dated from 1850 to 1981.

The main purpose is to promote the hobby of stamp collecting with the public.

Brightening up their day just for fun The Growing Love Community Outreach team of Prestige Academy in Bellville held a children’s fun day for various non-profitable welfare organisations at Totius Primary on Saturday (for this reason children’s names cannot be published). The purpose of this event was to show and share love and care, play and have fun with the kids and build a relationship for the future. The day ended off with a lunch braai. Top violinist in concert Three years after winning the First Prize at the prestigious Fifth Unisa International String Competition in 2010, Korean violinist, Yura Lee, will perform at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium, Parow on Sunday 10 November.

For her solo recital, Lee will be accompanied by South African pianist Tertia Visser Downie, who also accompanied her when she won the Unisa competition. Audiences can look forward to hearing virtuoso works composed for violin and piano by Beethoven, Brahms, Kreisler and Tchaikovsky.

Since winning the Unisa competition, Yura Lee recently added another two major victories to her impressive string of prizes: First Prize at the Yuri Bashmet International Competition 2013 (Russia) and First Prize at the ARD Competition 2013 (Germany).

She is now enjoying a career that spans almost two decades and which takes her all over the world. Her musical integrity and compelling artistry are constantly praised by both critics and artists of today.

Little chef with a big heart A young chef’s dream to feed the poor came true when he hosted the first Cook with Josh Day. Josh Thirion always had a dream to host such an event where other children would also help him cook up a storm for the hungry, especially children.

On Saturday 2 November that dream came true when he hosted the event at his old school, Bellville-North Primary, who made their facilities available to him.

About 500 children helped Josh to prepare

a meal that was packed with a fruit and juice for distribution to various projects.

On the day 750 parcels were prepared and three organisations were identified to receive these special packages.

These organisation were the Saartjie Baartman Centre in Manenberg, Nazareth House in Vredehoek and the TLC Outreach Project in Table View that each sent a representative to collect the food parcels for their children.

Groen terug met album ná stilte LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

Gian Groen maak reg om Dekades se Ballades be­ kend te stel.

á ’n lang stilte is Gian Groen terug met ’n nuwe album, Dekades se Ballades.

Gian is een van die land se topliedjieskrywers en is bekend vir sy liedjie, Vier Seisoene Kind, wat al deur verskeie kunstenaars opgeneem is.

Gian sê die nuwe album bestaan uit van sy ou liedjies van die laaste tien jaar wat hy nou nuwe lewe gegee het.

“Dis baie dieselfde as my musiek van die laaste tien jaar,” sê Gian. “Dit is ’n keur van ou liedjies van my wat ons net vars opgeneem het,” sê hy.

Gian verduidelik dat van die vars elemente op die album strykers is, wat hy nog nooit voorheen gebruik het nie.

Gian het in Augustus aan Dekades se Ballades by VH Recording Studio begin werk met Logan Scott (baskitaar), Jeremy Schultze (dromme), John Mitchell (klavier and orrel), Rayelle Goodman (strykers), Robert Jeffery (tjello) en Herman Kleinhans (agtergrondstem).

Loopbaan Gian het sy musiekloopbaan in 1999 as voorsanger van die rockgroep, Spinnekop, begin en die groep is verantwoordelik vir treffers soos Binneland In en Tiger en Louise.

Sy groot deurbraak het gekom toe Laurika Rauch besluit het om sy Vier Seisoene Kind op te neem. Gian het ook liedjies vir kunstenaars soos Theuns Jordaan, Juanita du Plessis en Dozi geskryf.

“Ná Spinnekop het ek so half weggekruip onder die dekmantel van liedjieskrywer, en ek het nooit regtig my eie weergawes van die liedjies gesing nie, soos dit veronderstel is om te gebeur nie,” sê Gian.

“As liedjieskrywer dink my kop die hele tyd. Ek probeer dink aan nuwe idees vir liedjies en ek het nooit so ver gekom om myself

te bemark nie,” verduidelik hy.

“Dié keer is dit anders,” sê hy, maar Gian is nie heeltemal alleen nie. Van die mense wat saam met hom aan die album gewerk het, is Luna Paige, Anton Goosen en Wouter van de Venter.

Gian sê dit was altyd ’n droom om ’n tipe van ’n “best of”-album bymekaar te sit. Hy het “heeltemal per ongeluk” by VH Studios geteken.

“Hulle was besig met ’n kompilasie waarop ek ook ’n liedjie moes gaan doen het, en ek het gegaan om die ‘guide tracks’ neer te lê en hulle het daar en dan vir my ’n ooreenkoms aangebied,” sê Gian.

Opname Dit was twee weke voor hulle met die opname begin het.

Wanneer hy nie met Dekades se Ballades besig is nie, het Gian en sy orkes ook ’n bluesvertoning waaraan hulle werk en hy skryf

ook Engelse liedjies wat vir ’n volgende projek gehou word.

Gian sê hy is baie sterk geïnspireer deur Ben Harper, veral wat betref die verskeidenheid musiek wat hy maak.

Gian is ook ’n musiekonderwyser by ’n privaatskool in Elgin, waar hy vir primêre leerders klas gee.

Dekades se Ballades sal op 25 November by Hillcrest Quarry bekend gestel word.

There will be close shaves a-plenty this “Movember” when Figaro helps the lovestruck Count Almaviva rescue his sweetheart Rosina from the captivity imposed by her nasty guardian Dr Bartolo in Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, presented by the international award-winning Cape Town Opera in collaboration with the UCT Opera School.

On stage at Artscape from 20 to 24 November, The Barber of Seville brings Cape Town Opera’s 2013 season to a high-spirited conclusion in a new production by Christine Crouse and Maestro Kamal Khan.

This hilarious opera buffa is Cape Town Opera’s hair-raising contribution to the month of “Movember” with cast members and conductor Kamal Khan sporting moustaches in support of their “Mo-Bros and Sistas” as they join the Movember Testicular and Prostate Cancer Awareness campaign.

The production takes on a Cuban feel that spills over into the foyers, with lounges featuring a Cuban-inspired Cocktail Happy Hour between 18:15 and 19:15. This “Seville Happy Hour” will boast signature cocktails Figaro, Bartolo and Rosina.

Every performance 75 lucky couples stand a chance to win an On-stage Passport, affording them the opportunity to meet the cast members and look at the set after the show.

Plus, the odd appearance from a celebrity or two will add even more surprise to The Barber of Seville.

Tickets for the show cost between R100 and R175 with 50 % discounts for senior citizens for the performance on 21 November. Tickets are available from Computicket or the Artscape Box Office on 021 421 7695.

Sportvrou: Zandri Bailey, spiesgooier van die Tygerberg­atletiekklub, is Vrydagaand aangewys as die WP se junior sportvrou van die jaar. Zandri het onlang ’n brons­ medalje by die Afrika­junior kampioen­ skapsbyeenkoms in Mauritius gewen.

Wenners: Dié lede van die Durbanville­tennisklub het in verskillende ouderdomsgroepe in die enkel­eindrondes gespeel van die Bolandse Ope, wat onlangs in die Strand gehou is. Reinhardt Grobbelaar (ouderdomgroep 35+) het in die finaal verloor, Hanlie Spalding (ouderdomsgroep 50+), was die wenner in die enkel­ en vrouedubbelspel en Poenkie Kröhn (65+) die enkelspel­wenner.

More for the trophy cabinet: The Welgemoed Kyokushin­kan dojo had their annual awards evening last week. Sydney Veremu is the Sportsman of the Year. He came second in the South African championships as a heavyweight and represented Africa at the recent Kyokushin World Union championships in Bulgaria. Michelle Joubert who is the current u­17 South African champion is the Sportswoman of the Year. With them is Shihan Hennie Bosman and Abe Arendse (marketing manager: Welgemoed dojo).

erskeie skittervertonings is die naweek gelewer op die Frans du Toit-gedenkbyeenkoms vir junior atlete, geborg deur die TygerBurger en gereël deur die Bellville-atletiekklub. Selfs die dwarswindjie kon nie keer dat die atlete presteer nie.

Buiten die pragvertonings het die byeenkoms vanjaar ook ’n internasionale kleur gekry met die deelname van twee skole uit Namibië. Hulle het die byeenkoms geniet en beplan om volgende jaar weer te kom deelneem.

Junior afdeling In die junior afdeling is dit veral Anthony Timoteus (UWC) 3000 m - 8:35,22; Elani de Beer (BAK) HG - 42,01; Carissa van Beek (BAK) HG - 41,10, wat pragtig presteer het.

Die 13-jarige Tamzin Groenewald (DFM) se 26.75 in die 200 m, die 14-jarige Jancke du Toit (DFM) se 52,75 en die 16-jarige Tiaan Swanepoel (STB) met sy 69,29, albei in die spiesgooi, was onder die groot uitblinkers.

Hul prestasies was almal meer as ’n 1 000 punte werd op die puntetabel. Die dag het egter aan Kyle Appel (BAK) behoort. Dié o.16seun het eers die 100 m in 11.15 gewen en later die krane behoorlik oopgedraai en die 200 m in ’n Suid-Afrikaanse rekord van 21.42 afgeblits. Met hierdie puik prestasie is hy aangewys as die atleet van die byeenkoms.

Jancke du Toit (DFM) was een van die uitblinkers met die spiesgooi. Hy het sy afdeling gemaklik gewen met ’n afstand van 52,75 m.

Close to 37 000 amateur golfers playing in 800 club competitions around the country this year partnered with the Sanlam Cancer Challenge (SCC), in the fight against cancer. The final was played at Sun City recently and is the culmination of their efforts as part of the 21­year­long drive raising R30 million since its inception. This year R 3,3 million was raised for CANSA and a cheque hand­over was held at Sun City.
