Sacred music at Welgemoed NG Church
Gerwelgedenklesing deur stigting en UWK gehou
The public can look forward to an afternoon of sacred music on 8 December in the Welgemoed Dutch Reformed Church. The artists performing are Minette du Toit-Pearce (mezzo soprana), Liesl Stoltz (flute) and Mario Nell (harpsichord and organ). The event starts at 16:00 and will conclude at 17:00. Tickets are R50 at the door and the programme includes beautiful sacred arias and instrumental works by JS Bach, Mendelssohn, Bizet, Gluck, Jenkins, and more. Die Jakes Gerwel-stigting en die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland het op Sondag 1 Desember die eerste Jakes Gewel-gedenklesing aangebied. Tydens die lesing het emeritus-aartsbiskop Desmond Tutu die hoofrede gelewer. Patricia de Lille, Kaapstadse uitvoerende burgemeester, het ook bekend gemaak dat Vanguard-rylaan moontlik na Gerwel vernoem sal word. Sy het dié stap genoem as deel van ’n proses van vernuwing van die ou na die nuwe Suid-Afrika, wat die verandering van straatname insluit. Die lesing is bygewoon deur akademici, politici en sakelui, asook Gerwel se naaste familielede. Gerwel was onder meer rektor van die UWK.
