Ses onder die toptien! ’n
Hele ses uitgawes van TygerBurger was vanjaar onder die toptien in die kategorie vir beste koerant in Sanlam se jaarlikse MDDA-toekennings vir plaaslike media in Suid-Afrika. TygerBurger-Bellville en TygerBurgerTableview het boonop met die tweede en derde plekke weggestap in hierdie kategorie, waarin TygerBurger ook al in die verlede uitgeblink het. Nie net het die koerant presteer nie, maar ons joernaliste het ook op die kortlys van verskeie individuele kategorieë gepryk, dikwels meer as een keer. Hulle het in die kategorieë vir beste joernalis, beste fotograaf, hardenuusartikels, nuusfoto’s én menslike stories uitgeblink. In
die laaste twee kategorieë het TygerBurger met die eerste prys weggestap. Die kompetisie, wat vanjaar in sy 22ste jaar is, gee erkenning aan prestasies van plaaslike koerante, plaaslike radiostasies en die joernaliste wat daar werk. Dit word as die Oscars vir die plaaslike media in SuidAfrika beskou en die toekennings is Vrydagaand tydens ’n geselligheid in Boksburg aan die presteerders oorhandig.
Inskrywings neem toe Volgens die beoordelaars was daar vanjaar ’n rekord aantal inskrywings van meer as 750. Veral in die gedrukte media, waar TygerBurger meeding, het die inskrywings aansienlik toegeneem.
Michelle Linnert, ons Bellville-verslaggewer, het eerste prys verower in die kategorie vir die beste menslike storie. André Bakkes, die verslaggewer vir Tableview en Milnerton, was in hierdie kategorie onder die topdrie. Michelle het ook met die eerste prys in die kategorie vir beste nuusfoto weggestap. Twee van haar foto’s was onder die toptien in hierdie kategorie. Carina Roux, TygerBurger se fotograaf, was ook onder die beste twintig in hierdie afdeling. Wat Michelle se twee eerste plekke uitsonderlik maak, is dat sy eers in Julie verlede jaar by ons begin werk het. Sy kon dus net uit ’n paar maande se werk kies, anders as
ander joernaliste wat werk van die hele 2013 kon inskryf.
Onder topdrie Desireé Rorke, ons verslaggewer vir Brackenfell en Kraaifontein, was onder die topdrie in die kategorie beste hardenuusstorie. Sy het verlede jaar hierdie kategorie gewen. Desireé en André was ook onder die toptien kandidate vir die toekenning vir joernalis van die jaar. Carina is, soos verlede jaar, as een van die drie beste fotograwe in die kompetisie aangewys. Al vyf foto’s wat sy in hierdie kategorie ingeskyf het, is onder die 15 bestes in hierdie kategorie uitgesonder. V Na bladsy 2.

VAN BLADSY 1 Drie van die vyf foto’s wat André in hierdie afdeling ingeskryf het, was onder die 15 bestes. André het voorheen ook al in die foto-afdelings uitgeblink. Drie van Carina se foto’s is ook gemeld op die lys van portretfoto’s wat die aandag getrek het. People’s Post, TygerBurger se susterskoerant in WP Media wat in die suidelike voorstede van Kaapstad versprei word, het ook ’n wenner opgelewer. Laila Majiet het die groot eer gehad om weg te stap met die Alet Roux-medalje vir die belowendste nuweling met minder as drie jaar se joernalistieke on-
dervinding. Hierdie prys se wenner moes onder die toptwintig in die kategorie vir joernalis van die jaar geëindig het om vir die medalje in aanmerking te kom. Laila was ook onder die tien bestes in die afdeling vir die beste menslike nuus. Liam Moses van People’s Post was een van die tien beste sportverslaggewers, saam met Cliffy Mago van City Vision. Dié koerant is die derde publikasie in die WP Media-stal en word in die townships van Kaapstad versprei. Fergus Sampson, uitvoerende hoof van
Media24 Nuus, het ná die toekennings gesê hy is besonder trots op die prestasies van TygerBurger en sy joernaliste. Ook Ishmet Davidson, hoof van Media24 Plaaslike Nuus waaronder alle plaaslike koerante van Media24 resorteer, kon nie sy vreugde wegsteek nie en het die uitblinkers gelukgewens. Verskeie ander plaaslike koerante in die Media24-stal het in die kompetisie uitgeblink. Dit sluit koerante van die Boland, Weskus, Oos-Kaap, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo en Vaaldriehoek in.

Road closed for tree pruning A section of Race Course Road in Durbanville – between St. John’s Road and Tygervalley Road – will be closed on Sunday 1 and 8 June from 08:00 to 17:00 for urgent tree felling and maintenance work. “The Durbanville and West Coast tree avenues are estimated to be between 120 and 150 years old,” said mayoral committee member for community services and special projects, Belinda Walker. “The section of Racecourse Road, between St. John’s Road and Tygerberg Valley Road is one such avenue. “These trees are recognised as a valuable city and regional asset because of their his-
torical and aesthetic values, adding a unique ‘sense of place’ to Durbanville,” Walker said. This urgent tree work comes after a number of incidents in Racecourse Road where very tall, heavy and dangerous tree branches, and in some cases entire trees, have fallen over. “This poses a considerable risk to road users. A number of studies have been undertaken, utilising visual and radar assessment. Some of the recommendations include removing some high-risk trees and reducing the crown weight on most of the remaining trees,” Walker said.
The city parks department plans to work on a number of the high-risk trees along Racecourse Road. The trees will be removed or trimmed to reduce the risk to road users. “To ensure the safety of road users while this work is being undertaken, a section of Racecourse Road will be closed. “There will be flagmen on duty to guide motorists and temporary signage will be erected. “The City would like to apologise to residents and road users for any inconvenience caused, and would like to thank all for their co-operation and understanding while this work is underway.”

Police seize firearms, drugs Weekend operations by the City’s various law enforcement agencies resulted in the confiscation of two police-issue firearms, numerous drug arrests and thousands of traffic fines issued. On Sunday 25 May officers came across a group of people outside their Bellville offices who had accosted a suspect after a chase that started in Kraaifontein. They searched the suspect and found a 9mm pistol in his possession that was later identified as a police firearm. On Saturday 24 May, in Robinvale, Atlantis, officers chased down a suspect who fled when he spotted them. The suspect tried to open fire on the officers, but was subdued. It was later determined that the suspect was in possession of a stolen police firearm and that he is wanted on charges of murder and attempted murder. “This is one more example of how our officers are putting their lives at risk to make
our communities safer. I want to commend the officers involved for bringing this suspect to book and hopefully the criminal justice system will now ensure that he stays off the streets,” said the city’s mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. Meanwhile, Metro Police also had their hands full in recent days, making 41 arrests, of which 19 were on charges of possession of illegal narcotics. Metro Police officers also arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving at vehicle check points in Durbanville, Goodwood, the city centre and Philippi East, while crime prevention operations in Langa resulted in the closure of six shebeens for violating their trading hours. Meanwhile, Cape Town Traffic Services arrested 42 motorists for drunk driving, three for reckless and negligent driving, and issued 2 327 fines for various offences. They also impounded nine sedan taxis.

They were honoured by Matla a Bana, a non-profit child protection organisation. At Matla a Bana’s WC Incentive Awards Detective Constable Marlon van Zyl (left) from Delft SAPS was runner up in the Top Performing category for being instrumental in securing three life imprisonments and seven other cases where criminals received 15-20 year sentences. The winner in this category was Ronel De Jager (right), an advocate from from Bellville and Parow Sexual offences courts. De Jager was actively involved in a child pornography case in which a Durbanville man was found guilty of possesion and production of child pornography. Twee jaar gelede het hulle met agt brode en twee pakke margarien begin, maar vandag gee die Sarmie Mommiez elke week kos aan 120 mense. Dié organisasie, wat uit Oak Glen bedryf word, het begin toe Cheryl Wilson se haarsalon nie meer so baie kliënte gelok het nie. “Met die ekonomiese insinking in die land het ek al minder kliënte begin kry en het vir lang tye in die dag niks gehad om te doen nie. Ek besluit toe om my ledige ure vir ’n goeie doel te gebruik,” vertel Cheryl, wat van die huis af werk. Sy het toe besluit om van haar vriendinne te nader om te sien hoe hulle die gemeenskap kan dien. Drie van haar vriendinne het by haar aangesluit. “Iemand het R200 in my bankrekening betaal en ons kon die eerste brode en smere koop. Tot vandag toe weet ek nie wie die weldoener was nie,” sê Cheryl. Cheryl sê sy het op haar knieë gegaan en gebid dat die Here vir haar ’n naam vir die organisasie moes gee. “Omdat almal moe-
ders was en ons toebroodjies maak, het die naam Sarmie Mommiez toe by ons opgekom.” Vandag werk 22 mense vir Sarmie Mommiez en is die organisasie ook besig om uit te brei. Daar is reeds ’n tak in die Panoramaomgewing en hulle is ook in die proses om een in die suidelike voorstede te stig. Verskeie mans werk ook nou vir Sarmie Mommiez. Elke week deel die organisasie kos uit by die Laerskool Ruyterwacht, aan bejaardes en ook kinders met HIV. Hulle besoek ook gebiede soos Malawi en Bishop Lavis. Onlangs weer het hulle ingespring en kos gevat toe vier gesinne in Richmondpark al hul besittings in ’n brand verloor het. Cheryl sê haar droom vir die organisasie is dat dit moet groei. “Ons wil dit nie net tot sekere gebiede beperk nie, maar wil hê dit moet oor die hele Wes-Kaap versprei. Mense het oral hulp nodig. Daar is ook ’n behoefte aan ’n mobiele eenheid sodat ons gemaklik tot in ’n gebied kan gaan en daar kan kos voorberei en uitdeel.”

Rudie, wat in Welgemoed bly, het enige potensiële kritikus se mond gesnoer met sy eerste boek deur tussen ysterskrywers as een van drie finaliste vir die Jan Rabie-Rapport-boekprys aangewys te word. Dié prys word toegeken aan die beste debuut- of vroeë werk van Afrikaanse fiksie wat in 2013 by enige uitgewer in Suid-Afrika verskyn het. Dr. Elzette Steenkamp het verlede jaar byvoorbeeld in ’n Slagyster-resensie in Rapport geskryf: “Ek was lanklaas so beïndruk met ’n boek, laat staan nog ’n debuutroman.” En ook Kopskoot se lof word reeds besing: “Kopskoot is ’n feesmaal vir misdaadvrate,” sê Deborah Steinmair in haar onlangse resensie oor dié boek in Rapport.

Wat ’n grypdief in Welgemoed met ’n kaartmasjien wou doen, sal nét hý weet. Vreemd soos dit mag klink, is dít presies wat ’n skelm verlede Vrydag gedoen het. Die Bellville-polisie het die voorval bevestig waarin die vermeende dief omstreeks 15:00 by die Engen-vulstasie ’n kaartmasjien gegryp en daarmee laat spaander het. “Op 16 Mei het ’n werker van die Engenvulstasie in Welgemoed die polisie in kennis gestel dat ’n verdagte die elektroniese kaartmasjien gegryp en daarmee weggehardloop het,” het kapt. he Durbanville Family Church, which applied for permission to wrap trees and lamppoles in yellow as part of the D4 campaign, has been instructed by the City of Cape Town to tidy things up by Sunday. This followed a series of complaints, said Chantal Hanslo, director of the city parks department. Residents also complained to TygerBurger about this. One reader, who wanted to stay anonymous, said she “was upset that an organization can see fit to ‘decorate’ the natural beauty of Durbanville with sheaths of environmentally unfriendly plastic for their own purposes.” “I am also angry that the municipality has apparently set a precedent in granting them permission to do so. Imagine what our neighbourhood would look like if every
group out to make a point decided to do the same thing,” she said. About 14 churches in Durbanville joined hands in the D4 campaign to show their unity and commitment towards one another. According to Hanslo city pParks received an application from the Durbanville Family Church’s media department in February for permission to place yellow tape on as many trees and lamp posts in the area as possible. “The City provided permission for ribbons around trees on the condition that the tape or ribbons should not be sticky, not damage the tree in any way and be removed within one month. However, following a series of recent complaints, the city last Thursday requested the church tidy up all trees and ensure that only one ribbon of a maximum size of 50 cm be tied around any tree. They also had to ensure that no nails or staples were used and that no sheets of yellow plastic are used.
The aforementioned conditions must have been adhered to by 20:00 this past Sunday. “In terms of the health of the trees, the placement of a plastic ribbon around a mature tree for a month will not do any harm,” Hanslo said. According to a media liaison officer of the D4 Campaign, permission was granted by the city to decorate trees with the D4 branding. “The guidelines were communicated to all that participated in the D4 campaign and we currently have volunteers who are monitoring all areas to make sure it does not look untidy or litter the environment,” he said. “Our D4 community outreach will be taking place on 1 June, where all the churches will be involved in community upliftment projects. “One of these projects are to clean the streets of Durbanville, where we start removing all the plastic tape,” he said.

A smart cellphone application to simplify crime reporting in the Voortrekker Road City Improvement District (VRCID) will soon be available to the public and businesses supporting the initiative. This app would also be used as a tool to report municipal maintenance issues. “The VRCID currently utilizes an incident database to register all events taking place within the VRCID boundaries. These include incidents of criminal activity, illegal dumping and assistance rendered to the public by the VRCID,” says VRCID chief operations officer Derek Bock. “This system will be replaced with an Incident Desk management system that ma-

kes provision for other users to register incidents via a smartphone app,” he says. Users would need to register on the app which uses the GPS function on smartphones to log incidents accurately. The application could include other areas as well, but Bock stresses users should not lose focus of the fact that crime must still be reported to the police, because the VRCID is not the primary enforcement agency. “The reason for changing to the new system is to empower citizens and VRCID levy payers and to indirectly obtain their assistance in reporting of incidents.

One in 10 learners raped
SA children world’s most traumatised June is Child Protection month with good reason: South African children are among the most traumatised in the world. According to Jelly Beanz Inc, a nonprofit organisation in Parklands rendering direct services to children and families who have experienced abuse and trauma, abuse in the Western Cape is rife. A recent study conducted in this region showed 91% of the children who were interviewed had been exposed to traumatic events, including violent crime, domestic violence, rape and child abuse. Other research has found that one out of every ten learners has been raped in the last year. More boys are sexually abused than girls, although the reports of this to authorities are much less. Another shocking statistic is that 43% of sexual abuse of children is perpetrated by other children. When suspecting abuse, parents should therefore bear the following in mind: V Abuse happens in every community, religion and race group. V Have conversations with your children about positive sexuality, and the rules of touching private parts. V Behaviours that may show distress in your child could include: aggression, withdrawing, losing interest in activities they previously enjoyed, nightmares, bedwetting, sexual talk or play that is not appropriate for their age, continuous headaches or tummy aches that have no physical cause, as well as symptoms such as pain or swelling in the genital area.

Well done to city sparkies I would just like to complement and congratulate the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department for their excellent and speedy service. I reported a faulty street light in Oakdale via email on the morning of Friday 9 May 2014, By 13:15 the light had already been fixed. If that isn’t service, then I don’t know what is. Thank you very much. A relative from Mpumalanga recently told me that a street light in their street has been out of order for more than three years. Nothing is being done about it despite their continuous reporting. The relative said they are lucky if their refuse was collected every week. Can you imagine that happening here? Large dogs should be on a leash I sympathise with the writer of “Honde moet aan leibande wees” (TygerBurger, 21 May). I live in Vredekloof and have experienced the same problem. It’s usually owners with large dogs who never have their dogs on leads. I have chosen to not take my dogs for a walk in the evening after work because it was not enjoyable and was turning out to be a very stressful outing. You constantly have to be on the look out for “loose” dogs. I now take my dogs for walks in the early morning before work, when it’s quieter. Most owners of large dogs insist their dogs are friendly and sociable, but when my little dogs are on a leash and a
huge dog comes bounding towards them, they naturally are going to get protective of me. Many owners of large dogs also do not even take their dogs for a walk, they just open their gates and let the dogs out. As an unsuspecting walker, you come around a corner face-to-face with a large dog with no owner in sight. Owners of large dogs should be more responsible. If they do want to walk them without a leash, get in the car and take them to a quiet area where there will be no chance of their dogs harassing and terrorising other walkers. WALKIES Brackenfell
Respect road rules and be courteous Recently a team was surveying the traffic flow at the traffic lights at the crossing of Vredekloof into De Bron roads. I wonder what efforts will be put in place to avoid vehicles coming from Brackenfell Boulevard blocking the entire crossing and delaying movement of vehicles accessing De Bron from Vredekloof when it is their turn to do so. Bid to regulate access to forest Residents and visitors to the Majik Forest area have complained about anti-social behaviour and criminal activity taking place in this public open space. The area is located between Jip De Jager Avenue, van Riebeeckshof Road and the urban edge to the north. It extends past the newly constructed reservoir and the existing substation, to the north-western boundary of Van Riebeeckshof Road, up to the Kanonberg boundary which is demarcated by the pine forest. In an effort to improve public safety, I made funds available from my ward allocation to fence the entire area in 2012. The Valley Committee has since raised funds to install a solarpowered access control system at specific entrances. The entire area is zoned as public open space and a condition is that the general public should have access to the area. To facilitate public access, three gates will remain open during the day. These include the gates adjacent to Amandel Close (Van Riebeeckshof Road), behind the Spar Shopping Centre and from Jip de Jager (Vink se Bos). All other gates will be locked and only service and emergency vehicles will be allowed entry. There is a proposal to establish an access tag system to allow users entry through the locked gates, to the northern section of the park. This proposal will go through a public participation process before implementation and any comments may be submitted to City Parks, via email to durparks@capetown.gov.za, within 21 days of the advert appearing. Carel du Toit word deur die staat ondersteun vir die kinders tussen graad R en graad 3. Maar deel van die skool is die voorskoolse sentrum, Chat, wat deur befondsing aan die gang gehou word. “Hier is die ouers van die babas met doofheid, die leerlinge,” sê Bourne, “want ons help hulle om hul kind se gebrek te verstaan en te aanvaar en pro-aktief te begin optree.”

p die perseel van Tygerberg-hospitaal is ’n skool wat in meer as een opsig merkwaardig is. In 1973 is die Carel du Toit-skool, waar dowe kinders leer praat, gestig as een van die enigste veelrassige skole in Suid-Afrika. Dit was danksy die verbetenheid van die ontslape prof. Carel du Toit, destydse hoof van die oor- neus- en keelafdeling by dié hospitaal. “Hy het gesê ’n dowe kind is ’n dowe kind en ’n dowe kind moet gehelp word,” sê Ruth Bourne, hoof van die skool. Sy sê die gewese apartheidsminister, Piet Koornhof, het destyds die skool geopen en selfs hy het nie ’n woord gesê oor die rassesamestelling van die skool nie. Maar die skool was ook nog altyd enig in sy soort, omdat dowe kinders hier toegerus word om teen die ouderdom van sewe in hoofstroomskole te kan funksioneer. “Deur dowe kinders te leer om te praat, kan hulle sosiaal, intellektueel en emosioneel ontwikkel net soos enige ander kind,” sê Bourne, wat nou al 37 jaar lank by die skool betrokke is. “Daar is geen perke aan wat hierdie kinders kan doen nie. Dit is ons wat hulle beperk. Dit kom van daardie ou term ‘deaf and dumb’. Hulle is nie. Hulle het dieselfde potensiaal as enige ander kind,” sê Bourne. “Doofheid is net ’n verlore skakel na die oor. Die brein is normaal – as jy net die impuls by hom kan uitkry, sal hy sy werk doen. Daarom weet ons dat kinders kan leer as jy net die regte ding vir hulle doen.”
Diagnose En die regte ding, sê sy, is eintlik drie goed: vroeë diagnose, ingryping en ondersteuning. “As jy nie die regte ding doen nie, het hierdie kinders ’n volslae gebrek.”
As dit storietyd in die Engelse beginnersklas is, sit dié kleintjies van die Carel du Toit baie stil en luister. Sy vertel van een kind wie se doofheid vinnig gediagnoseer is en teen die tyd dat sy agt maande oud was, het sy reeds twee kogliêre inplantings gehad. Teen die tyd dat sy drie was, was haar spraak al op die vlak van ’n vierjarige en is sy oorgeplaas na ’n gewone skool. “Dit wys jou wat gedoen kan word. En natuurlik, omdat ons dit vir een kind kan regkry, wil ons dit vir almal doen,” sê Bourne. Om ’n baba met doofheid te diagnoseer verg ’n baie eenvoudige toets. Bourne sê as gehoortoetse vir pasgebore babas verplig kan word deur die regering, sal dowe kinders op twee geen agterstand meer hê nie. “Dit is die teorie, en dit is wat in eerstewêreldlande gebeur. Dit is byna asof doofheid daar oorkom is,” sê sy. In die 1990’s het Carel du Toit met behulp van staatsbefondsing, ’n gehoortoetssentrum by twee klinieke in Khayelitsha begin,
waar ma’s getrou hul babas vir immuniserings gebring het. In 2012 het hulle toestemming by die Wes-Kaapse department van gesondheid gekry om kinders se gehoor by kraamafdelings hier te toets. Nou het die regering ingestem om saam met Carel du Toit en die Rooikruis-hospitaal ’n gehoortoetsprogram van twee jaar lank vir pasgebore babas in Mitchellsplein te onderneem. Die staat finansier dit en Carel du Toit bied die kundigheid. “Die data van hierdie projek gaan gebruik word om die 2030-gesondheidsplan saam te stel. En ons glo dit gaan tot gevolg hê dat gehoortoetse vir pasgebore babas verplig sal word,” sê Bourne. “Een van ons oud-leerlinge is ’n professionele ballerina – sy het verlede jaar die hoofrol van ’n produksie in Artscape gedans. ’n Ander het ’n B.A.-graad in musiek, hy speel
Kommunikeer Ouers word gemotiveer om met hul babas te kommunikeer om die fondament van taal in die brein te lê. Slegs 19% van die skool se befondsing kom van die staat. Die 146 kinders betaal skoolfonds, maar die skool is tot ’n groot mate van privaatbefondsing afhanklik. “Die kinders hier het baie selfvertroue en hulle is net so ondeund soos enige ander kinders. Hul selfvertroue kom van ons onderrigmetode. Ons leer die ouers om die hele tyd terugvoer en bevestiging aan hul kinders te gee. “Ons investeer in die jong kind met professionele hulp soos oudiloë, spraakterapeute en arbeidsterapeute, – wat alles deur donasies gedoen kan word,” sê Bourne. anhangers van die gewilde Afrikaanse spotprente Idees Vol Vrees, kan dit binnekort “in die vlees” sien. ’n Plaaslike grapmaker en ’n rolprentmaker het hande gevat om Idees Vol Vrees (IVV), in ’n aanlyn reeks te ontwikkel waar dié dubbelsinnige spotprente met hul slim en skreeusnaakse woordspelings “lewendig” te sien is. Die eerste program van IVV is Donderdag 15 Mei aanlyn bekend gestel. Bellville se Kobus Galloway, die komediant verantwoordelik vir die IVV-spotprente, en Durbanville se Remano de Beer van TwelveEleven-produksies, het met die hulp van Werner Smit, nog ’n plaaslike komediant, die spotskrifte vir die eerste webisode geskryf.
Genader “Kobus en Werner het my genader met die idee om ’n show te doen, gegrond op Idees Vol Vrees,” vertel Remano. Hy is ’n groot aanhanger van Kobus se spotprente en sê dit was opwindend om te dink hoe hy sy prentjies “lewendig kan maak”. Kobus sê hy het reeds met ’n handvol konsepte en episodes gesit wat hy so deur die jare bymekaar gemaak het. Hy’t toe vir Werner en Remano genader om die konsep ’n werklikheid te maak. “Toe die drie van ons een aand in Durbanville oor ’n koue biertjie saam gesels, toe weet ons ons sit met iets spesiaals.” Kobus sê hy weet nie of daar tans so iets in die Suid-Afrikaanse vermaaklikheidsbedryf is nie, veral nie in Afrikaans nie. Wanneer hy sy konsepte en idees vir ’n IVV-illustrasie aanmekaar sit, kan baie van hulle dikwels ook “in die werklikheid” werk. “Soms werk die idee beter ‘lewendig’ as in
’n spotprent. Ek verduidelik soms ’n idee vir iemand en dit is dan selfs snaakser as die illustrasie self,” sê hy. Die eerste webisode van Die Idees Vol Vrees Show is in die omgewing van Durbanville geskiet. “Ons is almal van die noordelike voorstede, so dit is ons hood,” sê Remano. “As dit ‘Bellville Rock City’ is vir musiek, is Goodwood ons ‘Hollywood’,” lag hy. Hulle ken natuurlik al die interessante plekke in hul area soos The Rabbit Hole, wat hulle toegang gegee het tot die kroeg vir ’n deel van die webisode. Omdat daar nog nie ’n borg vir die reeks is nie, moes elkeen maar sy kontakte gebruik om die eerste episode te vervaardig. “Juis omdat ons nie ons begroting van R52,60 wou oorskry nie,” spot Kobus. Hy sê die konsep vir sy IVV-spotprente is rondom 1999/2000 gebore toe hy dubbelsinnige spotprente begin teken het. “Dit was egter met pen en inkleurpotlode – voor Wacom-tekentablette en rekenaarprogramme, wat dinge bietjie makliker maak,” onthou hy. In plaas daarvan om strokiesprente te teken, wat gewoonlik agt tot tien ure kan duur, kan hy nou vinnig ’n groot verskeidenheid spotprente teken en op sosiale mediaplatforms laai.
Van kleins af Kobus sê teken was nog altyd deel van sy lewe. Hy was ses jaar oud toe hy kunsklasse begin loop het en hy het tot in matriek daarmee aangehou. “Die ding van teken is: Jy moet weet waar om die lyn te trek...” sê hy ondeund. IVV is nou al amper oral te sien, maar Kobus het 14 jaar lank daaraan gewerk. Danksy sosiale media-platforms soos Facebook, kon Kobus ’n groep van 171 000 aanhangers in die laaste drie jaar opbou. “Ek’s baie dankbaar daarvoor,” sê hy. Daar is ook al drie Idees Vol Vrees-boeke

Outrage over ‘shoe rubber’ bread DESIREÉ RORKE @dezzierorke
A
potentially harmful chemical additive in local bread products will be removed sooner than initially indicated following consumers’ outrage that this very substance is used in the manufacturing of shoe rubber. Azodicarbonamide (ADA) is a chemical used to “condition” dough for Sasko breads and baked products from Woolworths, Pick n Pay, Checkers, Steers burgers and Wimpy burgers. ADA has been banned from foodstuffs in the UK, Australia and Europe after the World Health Organization linked it to respiratory issues, allergies and asthma, but is still legally permitted, albeit in small amounts, in the US and South Africa. In the making of rubber and other plastics ADA is used to make the material lighter and more elastic. In baked products it renders the dough softer, lighter and more moist. It first came to the attention of American consumers in February when a non profit environmental working group released a report titled 500 Ways to Make a Yoga Mat Sandwich, listing some 500 foods containing ADA.
Risk to humans This was followed by a consumer petition calling on a US sandwich company to withdraw the chemical from their products. The report states that two chemicals are released when bread is baked with ADA: urethane, a recognised carcinogen; and semicarbazide, which poses a risk to humans. The history of how ADA became a food additive is described in report as follows: “In centuries past, flour fresh from the mill had to age several months before it
could be kneaded into dough and popped into the oven. But in 1956 a New Jersey chemical, pharmaceuticals and engineering firm called Wallace & Tiernan, best known for inventing a mass water chlorination process, discovered that ADA caused flour to achieve maturing action without long storage. The result, the firm’s patent application stated, was commercial bread that was ‘light, soft and suitably moist, yet suitably firm or resilient, with crusts and internal properties of a pleasing and palatable nature’.” The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved ADA as a food additive in 1962. Here the use of ADA is regulated to levels of 45 parts per million, an amount so small it is said to be non- toxic. This, however, could not be unquestionably proven. A 1999 chemical assessment report by the World Health Organisation stated the effects of exposure to ADA in humans has not been fully evaluated because there is insufficent data. The report stated that the most frequent reported effects of repeated exposure to ADA were respiratory symptoms and skin reactions. More alarmingly, it concludes the potential toxic and carcinogenic effects of ADA in humans has not been studied. Three weeks ago South African brands still using ADA committed to withdrawing the chemical from their foods by the end of July, after a report in the Sunday Times. Scores of consumers were outraged, demanding the products containing ADA be taken off the shelves immediately. Consumer Joyce Solomon from Vredekloof Heights feels so strongly about this she has taken it upon herself to educate consumers in shops. “When I see shoppers loading Sasko bread, I go over and tell them about the harmful chemical. People must know what they are eating. It is banned in so many first
world countries, for a good reason, why not here? In South Africa, millions of poor families rely on bread as a staple food, without the luxury of fresh fruit and vegetables or any other nutrients, daily. Who knows what harm has been done to them by this chemical?” she asks. What worries Solomon most is that these companies planned to phase out the product over three months. Solomon believes all ADA products should be removed from the shelves immediately. “Nobody seems to care. Consumers seem to be complacent, not taking care in what they are buying or eating and how this could affect their health” she says. In response to the outcry several brands has expedited the process of withdrawing ADA from their products. Darren Hale, chief executive officer of Food Services at Famous Brands (Wimpy and Steers), last week told TygerBurger they are aiming to have this product totally removed by the end of June 2014.
Phasing out “The removal (of ADA) is imminent. In the interim we will meticulously monitor the use of ADA in the product in question to ensure we continue to comply with government regulations,” said Hale. The hamburger rolls used in Wimpy and Steers burgers are the only product in this groups’ supply chain which contain ADA. Pick n Pay technical division general manager Cindy Jenks said Pick n Pay no longer uses any premixes containing ADA in any of their bakeries or house brand products. Pioneer Foods, manufacturer of Sasko Bread, stated the phasing out of ADA in their breads has been in process for a long time. “We shall be able to replace it long before July 2014, as previously communicated,”
said group executive of corporate affairs and sustainability, Lulu Khumalo. Woolworths on Monday confirmed it has asked their supply chain to phase out the use of ADA by the end of May 2014.
Compliance “While we do not use ADA in biscuits, pastries, croissants, muffins, cakes and we no longer use it in our bread, we do use ADA in a limited number of other bakery products,” stated a Woolworths press release. Sarita van Wyk from Checkers stated the group only buys bread from reputable millers and bakers such as Sasko, and cannot say which ingredients they add to their final products, but are assured these all comply with current regulations. “From our enquiries to Sasko we learnt that ADA is added in the milling process at a level of less than 45mg per kilogram, which is the legally permitted allowance in South Africa. In terms of R146 additives need not be declared by name, but by category only if it represents less than 5% of the total product and therefore ADA is referred to as a flour improver,” she said. “With regard to our own baked products, we buy prepared products, flour and premixes from various suppliers who have all confirmed they comply with legal requirements,” said van Wyk. “We have been informed by the relevant suppliers that ADA will be phased out by July 2014, but we cannot confirm that this is factually correct and neither can we confirm that ADA poses health concerns as it is currently approved in South Africa within the limit of the quantity as referred to above.” See a video interview of local consumers about this issue on our website on www.tygerburger.co.za. Measles vaccine stocks back, but not polio MAGRIET THERON Following the shortfall in polio and measles vaccine availability last month, the provincial health department has announced that measles vaccines are back in stock. The polio vaccine stock will be available at clinics at the end of June. “The short supply of vaccines is not a Western Cape problem, but one that is experienced by all provinces. The supply problem has its origins at the Biovac Institute, which is the supplier of vaccines to the National Department of Health,” said health MEC Theuns Botha. “In the interim, we are managing the available polio stock to reduce the impact as far as possible. The City of Cape Town
and Cape Winelands District have distributed their available stock to other provincial facilities with stock shortages,” said Botha. He added that patients should contact their local healthcare facilities to enquire about the availability of polio vaccines. Should stock not be immediately available, caregivers are urged to ensure the child is immunized as soon as supplies return to normal. “According to the Biovac Institute more than three million doses of polio vaccines were not released last month as the vaccine vial monitor was out of specification. The Western Cape Department of Health will continue to engage with the supplier and the national department and monitor this
situation closely,” Botha said. Enquiries at local clinics revealed some clinics are completely out stock of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) that need to be administered at six weeks, but the combination injection given to babies at 10 and 14 weeks is in stock. Biovac spokesperson Helene Rossouw says although there is a shortage of OPVs, they are constantly taking stock of the supply available and stock are being redistributed. She said should the OPV not be available for a six week old baby, the child should still receive the other vaccines against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus, and the Hib vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b.
“If they do not receive the polio drops at six weeks, they can catch up the dose when they go for their 10 week immunisations, when stock will be available again. They will not be at any risk,” De Kock says. Some private baby clinics have stock, but although immunisations are free, patients have to pay a consultation fee to see the sister. Tersia Bester, spokesperson for Panorama Clinic, said the clinic still has enough stock to immunise the new-born babies for polio. She says this is part of the maternity ward service, but the ward does not offer immunisations to older babies. Tygerberg hospital spokesperson Laticia Pienaar said Tygerberg has enough stock for newborns until the end of June.

Run Fast and Flat at Udubs Athletes: on your mark, get set, go and enter the annual fun run that’s also a perfect training opportunity for the upcoming Comrades Marathon. This, of course, is the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) Fast and Flat 10 and 5 km runs taking place on Saturday 31 May. The UWC’s athletics club is hosting this annual event of theirs and inviting people from literally all walks of life to enter, including runners, walkers and wheelchair-bound enthusiasts. “If you think you are ready for the Comrades Marathon, you have the opportunity to test your legs and stamina. This race is one of the major road events in the country,” said UWC spokesperson Aidan van den Heever. He said the race caters for athletes of all ages and takes place the day before the Comrades Marathon. “Some even use it to prepare for the Comrades, on 1 June this year.” The event is well-supported by athletic clubs across the country, he said, and “has become quite popular among local athletes in and around Cape Town.” Registration takes place at the UWC stadium on race day and starts at 06:00. The costs for licensed runners will be R35, while non-licensed runners can participate at R55. Help UWC society’s blanket drive It seems many able people and institutions are pitching in to help warm Cape Town folk up. The latest to start off on their annual winter drive for less fortunate Capetonians is the University of the Western Cape’s Golden Key International Honour Society. The university’s Winter Drive is a community service initiative that collects nonperishable food, clothing and blankets for the destitute and vulnerable. Once they have a winter treasure trove together, they donate the items to the Community Chest organisation to distribute. And this society’s contribution has been quite noticeable. Last year they collected more than 8 000 items – all donated by Capetonians and corporate sponsors with generous hearts. This year their campaign, coined the “Your Goodies are Gold” drive, aims to reach an even higher target – that of 10 000 blankets. This will be in addition to what they hope to gather in terms of clothes and food items. The society is appealing to the warm-hearted to donate and get involved in this worthy cause. Stellies in wiskunde se top10 ’n Klomp slimkoppe van die Hoërskool Stellenberg in Bellville het onlangs vir hul skool ’n plek onder die land se toptien op die wiskunde-ranglys losgedink. Die onlangse wiskunde-olimpiade het die koring van die kaf geskei toe die allemintige 7 000 deelnemers van 150 skole van oor die land hul vernuf by die Universiteit van Kaapstad gaan toets het. Onder dié deelnemers het die Hoërskool Stellenberg ’n totaal van 52 deelnemers gehad wat meriete-sertifikate ontvang het. “Met ’n agtste plek was Stellenberg vanjaar een van die toptien-skole!” het Hanna-Mari Rossouw, ’n trotse onderwyser aan dié skool, gesê.
Sy sê Marli Heynemann het ’n goue toekenning behaal vir ’n toptien-posisie vir leerders in graad 11. Benewens dié uitmuntende prestasie is sewe leerders genooi na die Invitational Challenge, gegrond op hul prestasie in dié kompetisie, sê Hanna-Mari. Dié leerders is Jacques Wüst, Ludwig Sander, Justin Fouché, Wentzel van Zyl, Amari van Niekerk, Marli Heynemann en Maxi Keresztesi. Die toptien-skole, in volgorde, is Rondebosch Boys’ High, Bishops, Westerford, Parel Vallei, Herschel, Rustenburg, Reddam College Constantia, Stellenberg, Somerset College en Wynberg Boys’ High.

Hulp gevra vir gestremdes Die gestremde oefengroep by die Elkanakoshuis van die Alta du Toit-nasorgsentrum, is tans op soek na enige gimnasiumtoerusting en vrywilligers om te help met die klasse. “Die oefengroep het gedurende 2012 tot stand gekom en het gegroei van sowat agt tot 25 deelnemers en die groep groei steeds,” sê Erilene Ferreira, wat die groep lei deur vir hulle eenvoudige oefeninge op die maat van musiek te laat doen. “Daar is van die deelnemers wat baie potensiaal toon en baie getrou elke Donderdag se oefenklas bywoon. Die nodigheid van oefenballe, gewigte en strekrekke is geïdentifiseer en ook is daar besef dat hierdie toerusting ’n groot bydrae kan lewer tot die mobiliteit, soepelheid en ook die fisieke krag van die deelnemers,” sê sy.

Students get foot in world of work T
he Fisantekraal Centre of Development (FCD) next to the Durbanville taxi rank has joined hands with several local businesses to implement job shadow assignments for office administration graduates. “This was a significant improvement to the training courses,” said Cheryl van der Merwe, training coordinator of FCD. “We are eager to find placement opportu-

Job opportunities Mariska de Beer, FCD director, believes it is going to provide many job opportunities within their community. “Partnerships are constantly being developed with organisations seeking relationships of mutual benefit. “We are also hoping to find job shadow opportunities and are currently in negotiation with retail companies,” she said, inviting more local companies to approach FCD with their recruitment needs for office staff and cashiers. The FCD has a vision of achieving significantly decreased unemployment levels in the greater Durbanville area, particularly in previously disadvantaged communities, Van der Merwe said. The non-profit organisation plans to accomplish this by developing unemployed people socially, emotionally, economically and spiritually – restoring dignity and building self-esteem and self-confidence in unemployed people through various skills development courses. The training approach is holistic, as life skills training and spiritual development is integrated into all courses. “This has a significant impact on the lives of our students,” she said. “On completion of the training, it is common for students to share how their time at FCD has transformed their lives by rescuing them from depression and desperation, restoring their faith and building up their selfesteem, thus providing the confidence they need to approach the future with enthusiasm,” Van der Merwe continued. New enterprise Kyle van Rooyen, who recently completed the office administration course, summarised her feelings: “I’m most grateful for the friends I’ve made, the work I’ve done, the experienced gained and opportunities provided, and most of all, for the person I have become”. Another new enterprise at the FCD was the introduction of a mentorship afternoon for past students in the bake for profit course. “This course continues to be one of FCD’s flagship courses, equipping students to set up mini baking businesses and produce a variety of good quality baked goods,” van der Merwe said. She said the FCD depends on the support of the community in order to fulfill its purpo-

ir meeste mense is die jaarlikse invul van belastingvorms ’n pyniging wat tot op die laaste uitgestel word. Vir Dowwe Dolla ook – of ten minste totdat sy dit op haar eie, unieke manier uitgefigure het. So trots is sy op dié “ontdekking”, dat sy besluit het om dit te deel met almal wat wil luister. ’n Mens kan nie anders as om te luister nie en ná ‘n “opvoedkundige” aand saam met Dolla kan jy amper uitsien na dié takie, al is dit net om weer te giggel oor een van haar pittige opmerkings. In Dowwe Dolla betaal belasting besluit Dolla om die hulp in te roep van “kenners” om haar belastingvorm in te vul. “Kenners” is hulle beslis, maar nie juis vir die regte redes nie. Om die eindronde te bereik, het Stellenberg se span afgereken met Paarl Girls High, Waterkloof, Wildeklawerspan, Rustenburg en Paarl Gimnasium. Stellenberg se verdediger, Mieke Brink, is aangewys as die beste verdedigende speler van die toernooi. The main aim of the newly founded Boundaries Cricket Club in Delft and Belhar is simply to give youngsters a chance to play. “I remember when I was still at school some years ago, I was invited to Western Province schools cricket trials. When I got there I was told I can’t play without proper shoes. I just had my school shoes,” said founder Mervin Maneville. “This is my vision with this club, to give kids the opportunity I never had. I’m inviting them to come and play cricket and spend their time wisely and not get involved with gangs and drugs,” says Mervin. For now, they play with home made bats and a tennisball wrapped with insulation tape. “We play on concrete in a park named ‘Die Bome-parkie’ in Belhar and there is another park in Delft where we play, which is also concrete. “It’s not much for now, but we are playing the game and we enjoy it,” said Mervin. The success of the club will without a shadow of doubt be determined by the involvement of sponsors and established surrounding cricket clubs giving them access to their training facilities and pitches. ie Hoërskool Bellville en Durbanville se oortuigende seges oor onderskeidelik HS Strand en Brackenfell, asook J.G.Meiring se skoksege oor Monumentpark was die glanspunte van die afgelope naweek se o.19A-skolerugbywedstryde. Durbanville se oorheersing van die losspel, gepaard met talle hanteerfoute deur Brackenfell, het die Durbies loshande met 30-5 laat seëvier. Dit is die vyfde jaar in ’n ry dat Durbanville met die Brakke afgereken het. HS Bellville, wat verlede jaar ’n
groot loesing teen HS Strand op die lyf geloop het, had sy onverwagte groot oorwinning van 35-15 Saterdag grootliks te danke aan puik samespel, goeie balverspreiding en ewe knap verdediging.

Die Durbies, wat met die draaislag nog 6-3 voor was teen die Ikeys, het die unieke “prestasie” te beurt geval dat twéé strafdrieë in die loop van die tweede helfte teen hom toegeken is, wat aan die tuisspan ’n oorwinning van 22-11 besorg het. UWK het so byna ’n skoksege oor Hamiltons behaal. Met die studentespan 20-17 voor driekwart deur die wedstryd, was dit benoude oomblikke vir Hammies, wat egter toe deur middel van twee strafdoele met 23-20 die knoop deurgehak het.
