REFUGE: DESTITUTE FLOCK TO CHURCH FOR HELP

uan Barnard does not sleep on the streets anymore. He is one of a growing number of people - particularly the homeless - whose lives are being changed through a church. Since Juan joined the Shofar Church in Bellville, he tells TygerBurger that he has finally found a family to which he can belong. This branch of the Shofar Church, which opened its doors in April 2013, sees people from all nationalities and walks of life enter through the doors every Sunday. So says Conrad Foord, the church’s facilitator and preacher. “You see the prostitutes coming in on a Sunday morning after a night’s work. They keep coming, because there is no one judging them here,” he says. “They come because they are not necessarily welcome anywhere else,” he says.

Forgiveness “About 90% of the people who come here are depressed and have tried their hand at suicide. They are people with worth issues. This is no ordinary church where you can prepare a sermon beforehand. They ask questions all the time,” he says. “They struggle to understand the concept of forgiveness. ‘How can I forgive the guy who stabbed me?’ or, how does the girl who was raped by three gangsters understand she can forgive them?’,” Conrad says. And yet they keep coming. Conrad says on any given Sunday they have between 70 and 100 church-goers ready and willing to hear the Word. “When one comes in drunk, some of the congregation members will flock together and make them coffee to sober them up a bit,” he says. “They know they are welcome here. All of them. And that is so cool. Of the facilitators, nobody has a clue,” he laughs, “but we have grown and there are lots and lots of testimonies of what the Word has done for these people,” Conrad says. “People like Juan – they never go back to who they were. He could never, ever drink again. You look at people like him and think: ‘how can life ever be blown into a skeleton?’,

The 46-year-old came from Harkerville in the southern Cape to find work in Cape Town. However, when his new employer found money was stolen off his premises, he fired each and every staff member. Juan remembers sleeping in a Mouille Point park in the dead of winter with no-

thing more than the tracksuit he was wearing, a beanie and a pair of gloves.

Destiny He made his way to Bellville and along the way asked himself: “Juan, what do you want to do?”, he says, and things started happening. He joined the church, where he’s been for the last eight months, and says he feels part

of something now. “I am busy fulfilling my destiny. This is definitely a part of it. Even if we don’t believe in the Lord, He believes in us,” Juan says. He has since found a job and no longer sleeps on the streets, but has a warm spot at his work – until he can find something better, he says. V To page 2.

Woman found to be carrying mandrax pills A woman who started acting suspiciously when she saw members of the Bellville Railway Police, turned out to be hiding hundreds of mandrax tablets. Captain Frederick van Wyk, a provincial police spokesman, said: “The Bellville Railway Police arrested a woman in possession of 567 mandrax tablets on the Brackenfell railway line on Wednesday 9 April. “The members were busy doing crime prevention duties on the trains between Bellville and Wellington. “When the train stopped at Brackenfell railway station a female constable spotted a woman who appeared very nervous when she saw them. “As the members stopped and searched the woman and her belongings, they found the mandrax tablets inside a plastic bag, wrapped in advertisement paper and brown tape,” Van Wyk said. He said the woman was then arrested for possession of drugs and appeared in the Kuilsrivier Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

ie inwoners van die Edelweiss-sentrum in Stellenberg is baie besig – met hande en verf en materiaal tower hulle die mooiste ware op wanneer die gees hulle pak. Met ’n gesamentlike ouderdom van 246 jaar tussen drie van hulle, is dit verstaanbaar hoekom die krulletjies van Martie Cruywagen se skilderye, en die teddiebeerkinders van Bets Botha, maar ook die houtsneewerk van Nellie Heinen, so indrukwekkend is. Tannie Bets is 90 en sy sê haar teddies is haar kinders. Hulle is netjies op haar bed uitgestal en sy sê sy is nie seker wat sy met hulle gaan maak nie. “Ek was gelukkig om destyds ’n boek te kry oor hoe om teddiebere te maak. Net ná ek 90 geword het, het ek besluit om weer te begin om die teddiebere te maak,” vertel sy. “Ek weet nie of ek dié wat hier is, aan my kleinkinders en agterkleinkinders wil be-

maak nie, en of ek dit gaan verkoop nie.” Sy sê sy het voorheen ook teddiebere gemaak, maar het eers vir jare “honderde en honderde lappoppe gemaak”. Tannie Bets kan enigiets doen van hekel tot brei tot stik, en sy geniet dié teddie-makery. “Ons het baie vryheid hier. Ons is op ons eie en kan dinge doen. My kinders uit Robertson kom haal my ook gereeld,” sê sy. Sy het al baie van die teddiebere wat sy gemaak het, vir haar agt klein- en agt agterkleinkinders gegee en hulle was baie “opgewonde” daaroor. Sy is op die oomblik besig met ’n sagte pienk teddiebeer. “Hierdie een gaan baie mooi wees,” sê sy en vryf oor die materiaal. Net ’n paar deure verder in die gang af, is dit tannie Nellie Heinen (86) se beurt om te vertel oor die kunswerke wat teen haar mure hang. So gevoelvol soos dié skilderye is, is dit egter die ontsettend fyn gedetailleerde muurhorlosie, wat sy handgekerf het, wat die asem wegslaan. Sy poseer saam met die pragtige muurhorlosie vir ’n foto, en noem dat sy weke lank aaneen aan dié waardevolle stuk gewerk het – destyds, toe sy nog in haar sestigs was. “Dit was uitkerf, vryf, oppas...ek het ’n spieël ook só versier,” sê sy. “Ek doen my lewe lank al kuns en houtsneewerk en het in ’n stadium gesing ook. Ek het op ’n laat ouderdom besluit om te skilder – eers in 2011.” Dan groet ons, en besoek die bloedjong 70jarige Martie Cruywagen, wat so ’n deur of wat weg bly. Dis ’n skok van kleur wat ’n mens ontmoet as jy by haar deur instap. Martie se werke hang twee mure van haar woonstel vol. Van haar werke is tot sover as Nederland en Amerika verkoop, sê sy. “Ek en my dogter skilder albei, maar ek het baie lank gelede iets nuut gedoen.” Sy is ’n oudonderwyser en het ná haar onderwysopleiding ook ’n jaar daaraan afgestaan om kuns te studeer, vertel Martie. “Gewoonlik het ek in die skool se kunsklas uitgehelp. Ek doen net wat in my kop kom. Soos die een oggend toe ek opstaan, toe is daar hierdie berge in my kop wat ek net móés skilder. En daar hét jy dit,” sê sy, en wys na twee van haar werke.

B’ville-GPF, SAPD vergader Die Bellville-gemeenskap word genooi om ’n openbare inligtingsessie oor misdaadtendense, die kwessie rondom haweloses hier, asook die nuwe sektorverdeling by te woon. Dié vergadering, wat gereël is deur die Bellvillese gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (BGPF) en die Bellville-polisie, sal môre (17 April) vanaf 18:30 by die C.R. Louw-ouditorium in die Sanlam-hoofkantoor in Voortrekkerweg in Bellville plaasvind. Die polisie sal praat oor huidige misdaadtendense in Bellville en wenke gee oor hoe die publiek die polisie kan help om misdaad te verminder, sê Pieter Blaauw, voorsitter van die BGPF.

Hy sê die polisie sal ook ’n aanbieding oor die implementering van die nuwe sektor-polisiëring doen. “Die publiek sal dan kan sien hoe die nuwe sektore ingedeel is en hoe dit die onderskeie woongebiede van Bellville raak,” sê hy. “ ’n Verdere aanbieding sal ook deur ’n verteenwoordiger van die gesamentlike komitee oor haweloses gedoen word. “Die nuwe siklus wat ontwikkel is en nou gevolg word met die hantering van haweloses, sal verduidelik word.” V Kontak kapt. Radio Tygerberg weer beste Radio Tygerberg 104fm is weer die beste gemeenskapsradiostasie in die land. Dié eer het die gewilde Kaapse radiostasie te beurt geval by Saterdagaand se vyfde MTN-Radio-toekenningsgeleentheid, wat in Sandton in Johannesburg gehou is. Dit is die tweede keer in drie jaar dat hy met dié gesogte titel wegstap, nadat die stasie dit ook in 2012 vermag het. Radio Tygerberg is uiteindelik met altesame vyf gesogte MTN-Radio-toekennings bekroon. Dit is die meeste toekennings vanjaar deur ’n Kaapse radiostasie, en die meeste deur ’n gemeenskapsradiostasie in Suid-Afrika. Wat dié prestasie soveel merkwaardiger maak, is dat die organiseerders vanjaar meer as 1 700 inskrywings van 95 verskillende radiostasies reg oor die land ontvang het. Twee van Radio Tygerberg se omroepers is bekroon as wenners in elk van hul onderskeie kategorieë. Anton Treurnich, aanbieder van die middagprogram Vuurvas van

15:00 tot 18:00, is aangewys as beste middagprogram-aanbieder, en Benescke Janse van Rensburg, aanbieder van die oggendprogram Bonanza van 09:00 tot 12:00, as beste gemeenskapsaanbieder. Die beoordelaars het van Anton se program gesê “Fun, entertaining, good drive show”, terwyl hulle oor Benescke die volgende opgemerk het: “Lovely voice, excellent range of guests and commentators”. ’n Besondere eer het Karien Basson, mede-aanbieder van Vuurvas, te beurt geval toe sy aangewys is as een van vanjaar se Bright Stars. Deur dié toekenning wil die MTN-Radio-toekennings erkenning gee aan jong en opkomende talent, wat besig is om ’n stempel in die radiobedryf af te druk. In hul beoordeling van Radio Tygerberg as gemeenskapsradiostasie van die jaar het hulle die stasie beskryf as “’n goed geoliede masjien”. Volgens hulle is die produk wat die stasie lewer “beide professioneel en meelewend”.

ie Stad het dadelik opgetree toe TygerBurger hom in kennis gestel het oor allerhande onderduimse dinge wat in ’n laan oorkant ’n laerskool in Oakdale plaasvind. Dít kom ná ’n berig, “Laan van onheilighede”, in die uitgawe van 9 April. Brendan van der Merwe, raadslid oor die area, het onmiddellik gereël dat spanne uitgaan om dié laan te gaan opruim en skoonmaak. Van der Merwe het gesê hy was bly om te verneem van die probleme hier, aangesien die skool dit nooit formeel onder die Stad se aandag gebring het nie. “Woensdagoggend is daar ’n inspeksie by die laan gedoen in samewerking tussen die skoolhoof, die skoolopsigter, wetstoepassing, stadsparke, en myself,” het hy gesê. “Daar is gevind dat gras en sand, wat in die padreserwe gestort is, aan die behuisingskompleks agter die Holy Cross-skool behoort, want hulle is besig met ’n plaveiprojek. “Daar is ’n kennisgewing aan dié kompleks-eienaar bedien om dié afval so gou moontlik te verwyder, aangesien hulle dit nie op stadseiendom mag stort nie,” het hy gesê. Hy sê die skoonmaakafdeling is gevra om vullis, wat vermoedelik op vullisdae deur haweloses oorkant die skool gestrooi word, op te ruim. Van der Merwe sê – soos ook deur die skoolopsigter, Lucas Louw, in die berig bevestig is – dat die Stad wel baie onlangs nog daar skoongemaak het. “Die parke-afdeling is gevra om die plantegroei wat langs die parkeerterrein groei, te snoei om te verhoed dat dit as slaap- of stoorplek vir straatbewoners gebruik word.” Louw het aan TygerBurger bevestig dat die Stad “vroeg Donderdag” daar was om te begin skoonmaak. “Hulle het begin

skoonmaak en begin om die bome te snoei. Ons gaan dalk nie die probleem vinnig opgelos kry nie, maar as hulle net gereeld kom skoonmaak, kan dit werk. “Teen 11:30 het die hoof uitgegaan en koeldrank en skyfies aan die werkers uitgedeel, aangesien dit so warm was,” het hy gesê. Van der Merwe het bygevoeg dat gereelde patrollies reeds hier plaasvind, maar dat wetstoepassing gevra is om dié gebied op sy lys van brandpunte te plaas om dit as prioriteit te hanteer. Daar word ook nou na die moontlikheid van ’n heining gekyk om toegang van Bill Bezuidenhout-weg af in te kort, sê hy. “Maar hierdie roete is ook ’n voetpaadjie vir leerders van die skool en dít mag dalk nie die beste oplossing wees nie,” het hy gesê. Hy meen die probleem moet in vennootskap benader word. “Hierdie is ’n gedeelde verantwoordelikheid, aangesien die skool van die gerief van van die parkeerarea gebruik maak om ’n aflaai-en-rydiens vir leerders te kan fasiliteer,” het hy gesê. Hy het bendadruk dat dit noodsaaklik is om te weet hoe en waar om alle kwessies, wat met die Stad en wetstoepassing te make het, verantwoordelik te rapporteer. Hy het egter benadruk dat strafregtelike oortredings steeds eerstens by die polisie aangemeld moet word. Dis 7de Laanreünie by Vallei van Sterre Neil Sandilands, wat die rol van Bart in 7de Laan gespeel het, is een van die gaste wat Vrydagaand 25 April by die Tygervalleiwinkelsentrum se Vallei van die Sterre gaan optree. Neil bly deesdae in Los Angeles. TygerBurger het hom ’n paar vrae gevra: 1. Kom jy darem nou en dan Suid-Afrika toe? Ja, ek is nogal gereeld in Suid-Afrika. Ten minste twee keer ’n jaar. 2. En jy is juis nou op pad SA toe? Ek kom skiet ’n movie in Kaapstad. En dan kom ek bietjie vroeër, want ek wou deel wees van die Vallei van die Sterre-konsert. 3. Sien jy uit na Vallei van die Sterre? Verskriklik! Ek was ’n paar jaar gelede op Pedro se program by Tygervallei toe dit nog Pedro & Friends genoem was. Dit was baie lekker en vol sports. So, toe hy my kontak om op Vallei van die Sterre te wees, het ek dadelik gesê ek vervroeg my vlug en ek mis dit vir niks. So, ja! Ek sien baie uit. 4. Nina Swart (Wilmien in 7de Laan) is ook op die program. Het julle nog kontak? Ons het ná 7de Laan ’n toneelstuk gedoen en ’n paar keer saam opgetree. hauneen Jors had a cosy home in Upington. Then she came to work in Cape Town and eventually ended up on the streets – a tragic story, but unfortunately not unique. After months on the streets Jors was approached by care workers and chose to join a skills and values programme at one of the City of Cape Town’s eight assessment centres for the homeless. Suzette Little, Mayco member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, on Wednesday visited the Tygerberg Association for Street People (TASP) in Bellville, where Jors and five others are currently being taught life skills and values through the Bright Star skills programme. Through the programme, run by centre manager Jannie Majied and his team, it is hoped that after the initial assessments to determine the needs, background and a sustainable future for Jors and her fellow course-goers, they will re-enter the world with a jumpstart to a brighter future. “The assessment centres are but one of the interventions that the city’s Social Develop-

ment Department has introduced in recent years to ease the plight of those who find themselves on the streets,” said Little. “The City is spending nearly R1,8 million on funding for assessment centres in this financial year and currently has contracts with eight service providers to operate centres in central Cape Town, Maitland, Muizenberg, Mitchells Plain, Bellville, Strand, Table View and Atlantis,” she said. Little explained how the programme, run over seven days at the centres since January, has seen 135 people assessed. Of them, 25 are noted to have been successfully reintegrated into their communities – the aim of the project that was started in 2012. “As with all new initiatives, it has been a period of trial and error and we reached a point where some of the original centres were not operating as effectively as we would have liked,” said Little. At the centres, run by a number of NGOs, street people find assistance in the form of emergency shelter and a professional assessment of their needs to help them access services assist their rehabilitation, she said. “This includes counselling, creation of job opportunities, life skills programmes and reunification with their families.

“That is why the city has introduced its ‘Give Responsibly’ campaign to discourage members of the public from making donations directly to street people and instead supporting established organisations working with street people,” Little said. Theresa Uys, chair of the city’s Homeless Agency Committee, agreed. “If you really want to help, rather donate to a church or school – an organisation that you know and trust to help with the homeless. Do not give a hand-out, give a hand up,” she said. Little said her department’s Street People Strategy was awaiting the results of an audit of the number of street people in Cape Town. ‘We need to constantly reassess whether our existing interventions... are making an impact. However, it must be borne in mind that the city cannot deal with the issue of street people alone. In the meantime, Jors is all smiles. She says she is looking forward to earning a salary so she can send money home to her three children, just as soon as she can find suitable employment after her stint at the centre. “I feel loved. I don’t sleep on the grass or on benches anymore. I made the choice to help myself, that is why I’m here.”

Dié groep vra ook dat nuwe lede moet aansluit om hand by te sit met die gereelde patrollies, wat reeds daar gedoen word in die aand en nag, maar gedurende die dag. “Dis juis gedurende die dag dat ons afgetrede mense soek om te patrolleer,” het Sarel van Rensburg, die nuwe voorsitter, gesê. “Ons het al voorheen bystand verleen by ’n huisbrand, motorongelukke en ook aan motoriste met motor-probleme, byvoorbeeld pap bande en petrolprobleme.

“Die buurtwag is die oë en ore van die polisie en die Chrismar-gemeenskap. Inbrake in Chrismar het aansienlik verminder, maar kan nóg verder verminder deur meer lede wat aansluit, en sodoende meer gereelde patrollering.” Naas die voorsitter, Van Rensburg, bestaan die nuwe bestuur uit Theo Galloway (ondervoorsitter), Retha Rich, (sekretaresse), Neels Saayman (tesourier) en Johann Ackermann, wat in beheer van projekte sal wees. Kerrievis is ’n tradisionele Kaapse gereg oor die Paasnaweek en mense val dié tyd van die jaar oor hul voete om vis, veral snoek, in die hande te kry, sodat hulle dit kan inlê. Pryse styg dan met tussen R10 en R30. Wally Croome, voorsitter van die SuidAfrikaanse kommersiële lynvissersvereniging, sê die laaste vyf maande was die snoek maar skaars, maar is nou volop in St. Helenabaai se wêreld. “Ons trek so tussen 500 en 600 op ’n bondel uit die laaste twee weke. Hulle verkoop dan vir tussen R30 en R40 per snoek,” sê Croome. Hy sê oor die Paasnaweek kry hulle darem ’n “ekstratjie” wanneer die snoek vir tussen R50 en R60 verkoop. “Ja, die smouse sit maar hul stukkie by, maar hulle vorm omtrent net 30% van die mense wat die vis koop. Dis ’n mens se saak wat nie vis kry nie of wat ’n klomp geld daarvoor moet betaal.” Pieter van Dalen, die DA se skadu-minister vir landbou, bosbou en visserye, sê hy wou vir dié week ’n vergadering met vissermanne belê, maar almal is aan die Weskus. “Die snoek loop definitief as ek niemand in die hande kan kry nie,” sê hy.

Eye on the streets keeps criminals at bay MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

he struggle to prevent crime close to home has come a long way in a short period of time. WelgemoedSafe, the community organisation with electronic eyes in the form of Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras, is now housed in a brand new and permanent control room that has a dedicated operational manager. “We are happy to announce that the WelgemoedSafe 24/7 control room is up and running,” said Anita Vos, vice-chairperson of the organisation. “The Control Room, run in partnership with local security company ADT, will function as a communications hub where radio communication between our three dedicated patrol vehicles, neighbouring neighbourhood watches, the police and other LPR hubs in Cape Town will route through,” Vos said. “It is managed by Lourens le Roux, the WelgemoedSafe security manager, and houses our LPR camera system. It is also a central place for all WelgemoedSafe member matters such as crime reporting, administration, and so forth,” Vos said, adding that the control room also boasts a dedicated cri-

me hotline through which residents can report suspicious incidents (see number below). She highly commends Le Roux, an ex-detective in the police force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, adding that he used to be second-in-charge of 42 detective branches in the Boland area. When Le Roux left the police service, he started out at Stellenbosch University’s (US) campus security unit, where he worked for 10 years until retiring in 2012. Vos said he “was very involved with camera surveillance on the campus” and that they were “very pleased and excited to have him on board”. Le Roux will be in charge of all the organisation’s operational matters and will coordinate the 24/7 camera monitoring staff as well as the three dedicated patrol officers. Some of the excited members welcomed Le Roux on the group’s Facebook page, with messages such as “Welcome” and “Welcome Lourens and thanks Anita Vos and team for managing the camera system so well for us up to date”, among others. Vos said their organisation still needed funding to complete the second phase of their LPR camera roll-out to include the entire Welgemoed area.

But it appears crime in the area may already be on the decrease. Paul Hoenck from the organisation’s communications team said March was a “relatively good month” in terms of serious crime statistics in the area. He said three successful arrests were made by the police as a result of footage from WelgemoedSafe’s LPR camera system, and that serious crime in the area has “decreased significantly”. This can also be gauged from a monthly report TygerBurger receives from a security company operating in this neighbourhood. As recently as February this report indicated at least eight serious crime incidents. Now,

Boikot sirkusse wat diere inspan Elke dag kyk ek met hartseer na die sirkusdiere wat in hul hokke staan, met niks anders om te doen nie as om gehok te wees en elke dag mense te vermaak. Gaan kyk gerus op die internet hoe word diere soms afgerig vir sirkusse. Dit is hartverskeurend! Baie lande het reeds die gebruik van wilde diere in sirkusse verbied. Van die wêreld se bekendste en beste sirkusse, soos Cirq de Soleil, het nog nooit diere nodig gehad om suksesvol te wees nie. Vaccine stock runs out, again The health ministry of the Western Cape has again urged patients to be aware that there is a national shortfall in the supply of polio and measles vaccines. Western Cape government health is managing the available stock in the province to reduce the impact as far as possible, a media release from the office of minister Theuns Botha, MEC for health, stated on Thursday. “In the Western Cape we are doing our best to manage the stock situation with the available stocks. We will keep our patients informed. “In the meantime patients should contact their local healthcare facilities to enquire about the availability of stock. Should stock not be available immediately, please ensure that the child is immunised as soon as stock returns to normal,” Botha said. As an interim arrangement, vaccines are being re-distributed between Western Cape facilities to maintain the availability of vaccines at all facilities and reduce the impact as far as possible. According to a letter from the Biovac Institute, the national supplier, 1.8 million doses of measles vaccines will be delivered to the national department of health by the end of this month. More than three million doses of polio vaccines were not released by the supplier as the vaccine vial monitor was out of specification and could not be released. Replacement polio vaccines stock is scheduled to be released towards the end of May.

Big plans for Voortrekker Road makeover MAGRIET THERON @magrietron

oortrekker road has been a major transport artery between Bellville and Cape Town since 1680 when it was an ox wagon track. It has seen the transport landscape change dramatically with the introduction of the railways in 1840, a commuter bus system and the introduction the Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system. Now Shahib Solomons, program and project executive of the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) says the time has come for the regeneration of this important route. The GTP has since its inception in 2012, been developing strategies to do just that. It is a long-term strategy partnership between the city, the province, businesses and the community creating a platform for this turnaround.

Urban decline “In the last 15 years the decline in Voortrekker road has been spectacular. Add another 15 years without anything happening and then we start to see what most of us fear: the Hillbrow effect, where organised crime starts to take over the corridor. And then you will see it starting to affect the residential areas. Then one would face a twenty year

battle to restore the situation,” Solomon says. According to him the N1 is rapidly choking itself. But Voortrekker road and the railway line form an important line of connectivity, a spine that holds the urban core and the Cape Town economy together. He says the City of Cape Town is now submitting proposals to secure national funding for the GTP’s regeneration framework. The GTP area stretches from the Stikland circle to the Salt river bridge and from Tygervalley in the north down to the CPUT and UWC campuses in the south. It includes four campuses: Stellenbosch, CPUT, Northlink and UWC, with an estimated combined student number of 100 000. “We are a partnership facilitator,” Solomons says. “Our partnerships include professors, thinkers and innovators who are planning a scenario for the future. “Our proposed vision is that by 2040, a regenerated Voortrekker road will link Cape Town’s two metropolitan nodes, the city at large and its regional hinterland.” From strategy to action “There is a five year strategic plan. We want to achieve an urban turnaround by 2020. We as a partnership are now going to look at the red ink and talk to our partners,

the universities, the corporates, city and province, to say: ‘Well, look, this is our strategic plan’,” Solomon says. The strategic plan includes a partnership with a Dutch urban design NGO and the city to set up a design laboratory to encourage exciting ideas. Solomon says the GTP also wants to see a regional innovation eco-system established where industries, investors and universities work together. Priorities for the next 18 months include the design of a pilot project for integrated transport operations management. He says there is a maximum of 550 00 m² of public land that can be developed into retail space. “The Sanlam Centre in Parow is 100 000 m² and one of the biggest malls in Cape Town. Imagine five more of those. Imagine an entire Century City office park in our area,” Solomons says. He says if one looks at current figures, that means a R236 billion investment value. The GTP proposes that public and private land from McIntyre to the Civic Centre should be integrated for higher density development and that this should be supported by public transport. “There is a lot of City land in McIntyre Street that is under utilised,” Solomon says.

The Parow station, through which approximately 40 000 commuters move through per day, and the under-utilised parking areas there, have a lot of potential. “The footprint of redevelopment could be large indeed. Together with the redevelopment of Bellville station, one could be looking at very significant change,” Solomon says.

Mixed use The GTP strategy also proposes low density housing in the Alexandra road precinct. “The land between Voortrekker road and the railway line is extremely well located and this offers an opportunity of coalescence of mixed use properties,” says Solomon. According to him, Parow is already seeing some change with the construction of student housing and the cleaning up of buildings under the problem building by-law, which are then being redeveloped for student accomodation. According to Clive Justus, chairman of subcouncil 4, there is broad support from the council for the GTP’s strategy. “We look forward to the setting up of a forum. Subcouncil will engage with the partnership and business community and others affected by this planning to get a consolidated approach to go forward,” he says.

chance meeting at an audition in the ’70s led to a successful career spanning more than three decades. Today we know them as Air Supply, but when they met in 1975 at an audition for Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, Australia, they were simply Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock. They will be performing at the Grand Arena in Cape Town on Thursday 24 April. The duo paid their dues playing in bars and nightclubs, and were turned down by many record companies before they were signed by CBS Records. “Graham believed we had something extra special to offer and would not take no for an answer,” Russell told TygerBurger ahead of thei tour to South Africa. The band’s first single, “Love and Other Bruises” was a hit in Australia and earned them a spot opening for Rod Stewart. Arguably one of the bands biggest hits is “All out of Love” which they recorded as part of their Lost in Love album, but they weren’t surprised when it rapidly climbed the charts. “That was one of a few songs we’ve recorded that during the process in the studio, we knew we had a hit on our hands,” Russell says, adding: “It sounded amazing.” The combination of Graham’s song writing and Russell’s voice was so successful that in 1980, Air Supply equalled The Beatle’s record of consecutive top five singles - an achievement made extra special by the fact that it was their mutual love of singing and The Beatles that

brought Graham and Russell together in the first place. Russell says the feat was “an amazing feeling”. “To be mentioned in the same breath as The Beatles and to have had even that one statistic is one of my most proud achievements in our career.” Air Supply’s brand of soft rock crossed borders, literally, and they became the first band to tour countries like China at a time when pop music wasn’t always allowed there. Now, South Africans will have the chance to see them live when they play in SA for the first time in April. Russell is still as passionate about performing today as he was when the band began. “I love sharing the stage with Graham and seeing the reaction to our songs from fans all over the world. There is no other feeling like it.” But don’t expect any rock star antics when the duos are in the country. One look at their social media platforms gives you an idea of how down to earth the guys are. “My parents were always telling my sister and I to be humble and ‘nice’ to everyone and my upbringing in Australia didn’t let us think that we were superior in any way,” Russell says, adding: “Graham, being from the same upbringing in England feels the same way.” To top off an already great career, Air Supply was inducted in to the Australian Recording Industry Association’s Hall of Fame at the end of 2013. Sy het bygevoeg dat dit vir ’n kind in ’n rolstoel baie ontmoedigend kan wees om sonder ’n rolstoel in ’n swaai te sit, omdat die kinders veilig voel in hul rolstoele. “Om speelapparaat vir kinders in rolstoele beskikbaar te hê, is wonderlik,” het sy gesê. Die omheinde park – ’n inisiatief wat deur die wyksraadslid, Carin Brynard, as wyksprojek moontlik gemaak is – bestaan uit rolstoel-vriendelike swaaie, ’n rondomtalie en ’n wipplank. Die park se speelarea se oppervlak is hard gemaak en met sintetiese gras uitgevoer. Nuwe bome is aangeplant en ’n tuin met welriekende plante is aangelê. Stoffel Kruger, skoolhoof by die Paarlskool, het sy dank teenoor die Stad uitgespreek. “Dit is ’n onbeskryflike genotvolle belewenis vir die kinders in rolstoele om vrylik en veilig op ’n swaai gestoot te word. ’n Mens kan nie glo hoe die kinders dit geniet nie,” het hy gesê. Sowat twee derdes van die 327 leerders by dié skool is fisiek gestremd. Willem Myburg van die die Stad se parkeafdeling, het bygevoeg dat die park natuurlik ook sal oop wees vir nie-gestremde kinders in die gemeenskap. “Dis wat die park so uniek maak – die geleentheid vir die kinders om saam te speel en mekaar te geniet ten spyte van hul fisieke verskille,” het hy gesê.

A personal challenge to a Johannesburg socialite has turned into a movement accross the globe to knit and croché blankets for the less fortunate. Zelda la Grange, personal assistant of late Nelson Mandela, in December last year dared Carolyn Steyn to produce 67 blankets for the poor by Mandela Day, 18 July. Steyn’s enthusiasm and Facebook presence motivated friends and friends-of-friends and

now “67 Blankets” has almost 1 300 Facebook members who are knitting and crocheting to change the world for the better. Mandela Day aims to inspire people to take action and inspire change. On Saturday 12 April, a group of the 67 Blankets drive, who call themselves the Knit Wits and Happy Hookers, took a ferry to Robben Island armed with needles and wool, to visit the cell of Madiba and have a picnic in the courtyard of the famous jail.

means to bridge the gap between the rich and poor in urban areas is what a member of the Kuils River Civic Association hopes to achieve following his recent visit to South America. Mathys Markgraaf, who is member of the Civic Association and the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), attended the World Urban Forum (WUF) held in Medellin, Colombia two weeks ago. The NHBRC is a home building industry regulator body. Its delegation was accompanied by members of the National Department of Human Settlements. The theme for this year’s forum was Urban Equity in Development – Cities for Life. Mathys said they learned how different countries are addressing issues relating to urban equity. Mathys, co-ordinator of the Civic Associations Housing Support Programme, explained that their delegation learned as much as possible from the information provided by speakers and other delegates who arrived from nearly 150 countries. According to its website the WUF is a non-legislative technical forum convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). The forum is held every two years and examines the most pressing human settlement issues facing the world today, including rapid urbanization and its impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. Mathys said the gap between the urban rich and poor is a concern for South Africa and the rest of Africa. One of the forum’s objectives is to address inequity. “Equity is the key to human rights. We need to incorporate this into our daily lives and that is what the Kuils River Civic has been promoting all these years,” said Mathys. The NHBRC presented the progress made in South Africa at the forum. Mathys said they used the opportunity to learn from other countries. “To learn how they overcome barriers and challenges.” He said the city of Medellin itself had do-

One factor hindering development in South Africa is access to resources, he explained. “We want to improve the lives of all individuals. “We want our community to be sustainable.We promote job creation but if there are no resources then we cannot do it. “There are funds available for entrepreneurs but they never reach the people at ground level,” Mathys said. Isaac Jenecke, chairperson of the Kuils River Civic, said Mathys always focussed on housing matters in the community and represented the organisation at several meetings with the City of Cape Town and at other building forums. Isaac said he agreed with Mathys that housing is one of the biggest challenges the Western Cape and South Africa is facing.

Life lessons through theatre Drama students of the Acting Hope Drama School presented an outreach day at House of Grace to entertain the children and teach them life lessons through theatre. The drama school was founded by Ingrid Burger in 2012 as a community project for the Mrs United Nations South Africa competition. She wanted to use her talents as a drama teacher to enrich the lives of children within her community. Burger, a teacher at Gene Louw Primary School, was crowned as the 2014 Mrs United Nations South African winner. Her drama students collected food and other necessities for the 26 children in the

care of Aletta Herbst at House of Grace and spent the afternoon playing with the children. “It is important for children to learn that children around them all need to be accepted, loved and be given hope,” said Burger. The children are encouraged to start using their talents to make a difference in their communities. “The Acting Hope Drama School gives children the opportunity to use their talents in drama to touch the lives of children in the community,” she said. Die twee wenners is Robin Spacey en Priscilla van Wyk. Priscilla het met ’n foto van haar dogtertjie, Andrea (7), wat aan die lees is in die biblioteek, ’n beginnersfotografiekursus deur Tiaan van Deventer gewen. Oosthuizen sê die naaswenner, Robin, het ’n geskenkbewys van Cameraworld in Bellville gewen. Dit was vir haar foto van háár dogter, Gemma (6).

B’ville-Noorder blink uit in netbal ’n Leerder van die Laerskool Bellville-Noord, wat vir die WPnetbalspan gekies is, het onlangs ’n bronsmedalje behaal op ’n interprovinsiale toernooi in Gauteng. Dié leerder, Christelle Smit (gr. 7), het gedurende die afgelope vakansie van 31 Maart tot 5 April as lid van die o.13-aksienetbalspan aan dié provinsiale kragmeting in Centurion gaan deelneem. Corné Lotter van dié skool meen die bronsmedalje “is al klaar ’n baie goeie prestasie. Christelle is egter toe ook as een van slegs 10 meisies vanuit al die provinsies aangewys as ’n All Star-speler,” sê hy. “Dit is ’n uitmuntende prestasie, aangesien sy uit al die spelers by die toernooi – die bestes van die land – aangewys is. Sy is dus een van die tien bestes in haar ouderdom in hierdie sport in die hele land!”

olitici en befaamde ekonome kan gerus by Lené Dippenaar, ’n graad 12leerder van die Hoërskool Tygerberg, gaan kers opsteek om uit te vind hoe om armoede te bekamp. Lené is onlangs aangewys as wenner van die jaarlikse Nedbank/Wes-Kaapse provinsiale regering se opstelkompetisie vir wiskunde-, ekonomie- en rekeningkunde-leerders. Sy het stof in die oë geskop van 213 skole se inskrywings vir dié kompetisie wat die armoede-vraagstuk in Suid-Afrika aangespreek het. Die eerste deel van die kompetisie was om ’n opstel van tussen 6 000 en 8 000 woorde te skryf. In die opstel moes deelnemers kyk na wat die regering doen om armoede te verlig en moes hulle self ook voorstelle maak oor hoe om dié probleem op te los. Lené sê hoewel almal dieselfde onderwerp gekry het om oor te skryf, is dit ’n onderwerp wat haar na aan die hart lê. “Ek voel baie sterk oor armoede in ons land en daarom het ek dit geniet om daaroor op te lees en om te probeer om sinvolle raad te gee. Dit was ook lekker om te kon sê hoe ek regtig oor die armoede in ons land voel en wat ek dink gedoen kan word om dit te beveg,” sê sy.

Raak almal Haar opstel is gegrond daarop dat armoede almal raak en dat leierskap-gegronde op-

lossings noodsaaklik is. Sy ondersoek die kultuur van opleiding in Suid-Afrika en sê verbruikersbesteding moet verhoog en dat dit direk gekoppel is aan mense se opvoeding en vaardigheidsvlakke. “Plaaslike produsering van produkte moet verhoog, want Suid-Afrika voer steeds baie meer produkte in as uit. Suid-Afrika moet ook meer entrepreneurs hê om die nodige ekonomiese groei te behaal. Entrepreneurs speel ’n baie belangrike rol in werkskepping en om meer mense toegang te gee tot ekonomiese geleenthede,” sê sy. Alan Winde, minister van finansies, ekonomiese ontwikkeling en toerisme, sê Lené het baie bruikbare voorstelle in haar opstel “End of the Road or Window of Opportunity?” gemaak. “Sy fokus op skoolopleiding en spreek vaardigheidstekorte aan. Sy kyk ook na die optimalisering van internasionale handelsooreenkomste,” sê hy. Lené sê sy het soveel moontlik bronne probeer naslaan en dit het ure se lees geverg. “Ek het onder andere die nasionale ontwikkelingsplan, die sensusdata van 2011, verskeie koerantberigte, ekonomiese tydskrifte, die nasionale begroting van 2013 en ’n paar akademiese joernaal-artikels gebruik. Ek het ook ’n onderhoud met ’n ekonomiese joernalis gevoer,” sê sy. Die laaste ronde van die kompetisie het ’n 10 minute lange aanbieding oor dieselfde onderwerp en vrae-sessie van ’n paneel behels. Sy is op 14 Maart as die wenner aangewys.

Nog ’n graad 12-leerder in ekonomie van die Hoërskool Tygerberg, Liamé Smit, het die vyfde plek in die kompetisie behaal.

Trots “Ek is ongelooflik trots op die twee meisies. Twee Tiere in die top-12 is ’n groot prestasie vir ons skool en ekonomie as vak. Ek hou hul toekoms met baie belangstelling dop,” sê Alecia Dreyer, hul ekonomie-onderwyser. Sy het R10 000 gewen vir die prestasie van haar leerlinge. Lené het ’n driejaar-beurs vir verdere studies en R10 000 kontant gewen. Sy beplan om volgende jaar B.Rek te gaan studeer en sê sy gaan ’n gedeelte van die prysgeld gebruik om haarself te bederf. Die res sal sy op die aandele-beurs belê vir die toekoms. Liamé se prys is ’n driejaar-beurs en R2 000 kontant. Die kompetisie word al sedert 2008 deur die Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement, die Wes-Kaapse provinsiale tesourie en Nedbank aangebied. “Ek was beïndruk met die gehalte van hierdie jaar se inskrywings. Een van die oogmerke van hierdie kompetisie is om geesdrif aan te moedig vir belangrike vakke soos wiskunde, ekonomie en rekeningkunde. “Hierdie inisiatief bied ook aan jongmense waardevolle werkservaring,” sê Winde. Donald Grant, minister van onderwys, sê hierdie vakke is prioriteitsgebiede vir die bevordering van onderrig en finansiële geletterdheid, wat die boustene is vir die toekoms van Suid-Afrika.

Die dak het behoorlik gelig toe die plaaslike sanger, Emo Adams ,Woensdagaand sy verjaarsdag saam met aanhangers, lede van die gemeenskap, familie en vriende gevier het. Sy teater, die alombekende All Star-teater by die Cape Gate Lifestyle-sentrum in Brackenfell, was stampvol met sowat 300 gaste wat tot laataand makietie gehou het. Emo, wat Woensdag “30-something” geword het, wou vanjaar sy verjaarsdag met die publiek deel. “As dit nie vir dié mense was nie, sou ek nooit so as kunstenaar gegroei het nie. Die publiek was deel van my loopbaan en ek wou die dag met my aanhangers deel,” het hy gesê. Emo het ook van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak om kos in te samel vir plaaslike welsynsorganisasies. Elke gas moes ’n nie-bederfbare voedselitem saambring en ’n gedeelte van die toegangsgeld sal ook vir dié doel aangewend word. Die organisasies wat die skenking gaan ontvang, sal vandeesweek bekend gemaak word. Emo het sy ouers bedank vir die rol wat hulle in sy lewe gespeel het – spesifiek sy pa, Omar, wat hom op sy pad in die vermaaklikheidsbedryf geplaas het.

Emo saam met sy ouers, Mardeah en Omar Adams. Dit was ’n teer oomblik toe Omar sy seun gelukgewens en aan hom ’n geraamde gebed gegee het. “As ouers is dit vir ons ’n eer om vandag hier in Emo se eie teater te sit. Ons is trots op albei ons seuns vir wat hulle in hul lewe bereik het, en nog steeds onthou waar hulle vandaan kom,” het hy gesê. Ander bekendes by die partytjie was Emo

Shining a light for children’s health Another R70 000 has been donated to the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital by The Lighthouse Project. This brings the total of their contributions to this trust over the past nine years to almost R700 000. These funds are generated by the Project’s sale of a variety of Tygerberg Children’s Hospital branded merchandise. The revenue is supplemented by donations and the proceeds of annual Christmas gift wrapping. “The project operate from retail outlets and shopping centres, where they fulfil an important branding and public awareness role in addition to their primary fundraising function. Participating retailers and shopping centres, as well as the public, also need to be acknowledged for their support in this collaborative initiative,” says Malcolm Kling, the Funds Procurement Manager. He says funding received by the trust is used to upgrade facilities and purchase essential medical equipment in order to optimise the delivery of specialist healthcare to

Iris House expands care to new areas Welgelegen based Iris House cares for over 100 families who have children living with a life threatening illness or life limiting condition. The charity provides community-based respite care at no charge to families. Since its inception three years ago, the organisation has branched out to Mfuleni, Crossroads, Khayelitsha and Vredenburg. They have also put in a bid to Public Works for a building on the Stikland grounds, where they are hoping to open the first Special Needs Children’s Hospice later this year. Having recently received R40 000 as a beneficiary of the T-System Golf Day held at Paarl Golf Estate, founder Sue van der Linde says the money will be used to increase the size of the community-based care team in Mfuleni and the Northern Suburbs. She says Iris House has experienced massive growth in the last six months and now care for 103 children and their families. “We tailor a package for each family based on their needs. Tribal Echo bring nuwe Afrikaklanke LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

“Ons maak musiek, maar ons is meer as net ’n musiekgroep.” Só sê Niël Visser, saksofoonspeler van die groep, Tribal Echo. “Ons hou van mense en op die verhoog hou ons van grappies maak en so ’n bietjie komedie,” sê hy. Niël sê die groep se lede is ook almal vriende, wat dit lekker maak om saam te werk. “Ons bring ’n klank wat Suid-Afrikaans is,” sê Frazer Berry, voorsanger en kitaarspeler. “Ons noem ons klank op die oomblik ‘klipkop-rock’,” sê Frazer, maar in Engels noem hulle dit “eclectic roots rock”. “Dis omdat ons voel die Suid-Afrikaanse Afrika-klank word nie genoeg gebruik nie,” verduidelik hy. “Die tussenslag-ritmes en Afrika-kulture is elke dag deel van ons lewe, maar musikante maak dit nie deel van hul musiek nie. Tribal Echo het begin as ’n hiphop-groep. In die begin was hulle ’n paar digters en musikante wat bymekaar gekom het. Hul eerste vorm van uitdrukking was rymklets. “Die Tribal Echo-familie, soos hulle nou daar uitsien, is vyf jaar aan die gang. “Familie” is nie net ’n uitdrukking as dit

Fokofpolisiekar se kitaarspeler, Hunter Kennedy, het vir TygerBurger vertel dat hy mal is oor die eerste Ek Joke Net!-film. “Ek dink dis ’n classic candid prank comedy. Marking the 20 year anniversary of their first concerts in Germany, the international Chameleon Chamber Trio will conclude their short reunion tour of the Eastern and Western Cape on Saturday 26 April with master classes at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre, and a short concert in the evening. Chameleon was established when the three performers met as students studying at Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Hannover. They are Scottish born bassoonist Sarah Burnett, Irish-born oboist Aisling Casey and South African-born pianist Catherine Foxcroft. Foxcroft is a senior lecturer at Rhodes University and one of SA’s finest pianists, boasting a vibrant career as soloist, chamber musician, pedagogue, and researcher. Master classes will be hosted at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Picton Street, Parow from 14:00 to 18:00. The concert will take place at 19:00. Raynard set to dominate again O

ver the Easter weekend Cape Town will host two different South African national motocross events which are sure to showcase some dirt madness. The first event of the weekend, Round 2 of the MSA South African national championship, will be hosted at Zone 7 (just off the N7) on Friday 18 April. The track is known for its fast, gnarly racing which keeps the competition tight. Cape Town’s MX hero, Anthony Raynard (Big Bay), has dominated every regional event at this track this year and looks to do much the same at the national event as all of SA’s best line up for quality racing. Saturday and Sunday will then bring

all the Round 2 competitors from the WOMZA TRP Distributors South African Motocross Nationals series to the Melkbos MX track (on the R27 outside of Melkbosstrand). This is definitely the sandiest track of the lot and the guys will have to bring some serious heart to fight their way through the track. Melkbos played host to the nationals last year and the racing certainly delivered. Round 1 of the WOMZA national series took place in Port Elizabeth last month where Raynard placed third. Since then he’s been putting in the hours to make sure he dominates at home this weekend. Both races are bound to go down to the wire.

he world stage beckons for self proclaimed adrenalin junkie and female powerlifter Bonita Hein (43) from Parow. She will compete in the u-84kg division with the best in the world from 1 to 8 June at the IPF (International Federation of Powerlifting) to be held in Potchefstroom. “I have the chance of a lifetime to step on a platform with the best powerlifters in the world – an opportunity to finally wear the famous green and gold blazer is what I dream about,” said an excited Hein. But the so-called smaller sports all have

the same common problem – funds. Bonita has had the opportunity to represent her country overseas on three previous occasions but due to lack of sponsors and funding, she wasn’t able to compete.

Focus “It is devastating to train hard, make sacrifices to achieve the highest level in your sport, to then have this huge financial barrier blocking your dreams.” But all this is now a thing of the past and her focus is squarely on Potchefstroom. “My preparation for the world champs does not necessarily change much from

what I normally do in terms of training and diet. I have realized that you have to train and eat smart to keep your strength, and vigorous training for long hours affects my strength significantly. “Competing with top international powerlifters who have the best training facilities, coaches and sponsored supplement companies at their disposal is not something I put too much thought in as this can affect your performance and nerves on meet day.

Planning “Although I am very competitive and always push the limits to set a new personal

best on my lifts, I have to be smart in my own abilities and take a few things into consideration. “Planning to be at your best physical condition on the day of the competition usually starts seven days prior to the time you step on the platform. Knowing your opening attempt weight to start with according to how your body feels all plays a vital role.” Bonita has a best raw squat of 117kg, bench press 70kg, dead lift 155kg and a total of 337,5kg. Die Tiere het egter betyds ontwaak en algaande teruggeveg om vir die vyfde agtereenvolgende jaar met Stellenberg af te reken. Brackenfell se groter vaart en beter hanteerwerk het gesorg vir ’n oorwinning van 27-12 oor HS Bellville – hul eerste wenslag in vier jaar. Durbanville het op sy beurt – vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar – vir HS Strand met 23-22 geklop. Dit was ’n wipplankstryd en Durbies kon die knoop in die laaste sekondes deurhak. Die heel eerste wedstryd tussen De Kuilen en Milnerton het interessant verloop. Ná ’n uitstekende rustydvoorsprong van 29-0, moes die Kuile behoorlik walgooi om ’n oorwinning met 32-26 teen die vegtende Milnerton deur te trek. D.F. Malan het nie veel moeite ondervind om Parel Vallei met 17-0 te klop nie. Gebrekkige stelskopwerk het HS President se 60-jarige feesvieringe bederf toe die Vrijzee-span met 10-13 teen Bredasdorp vasgeval het. Kasselsvlei het verras met sy oorwinning van 23-15 oor HTS Bellville, terwyl Monumentpark op ewe onverwagte wyse met 26-5 deur Primrose-klub gekou is. Bellville-Suid het HS Trafalgar maklik met 26-3 geklop.

Dit was ’n wedstryd wat die Durbies net sowel kon gewen het as hul afronding net op dieselfde vlak as dié van die Stellenbossers was. Die Tygerberg-klub kon aanvanklik mooi saamgesels in sy wedstryd teen die Ikeys, maar uiteindelik was die studentespan se kragtige voorspelerspel en veel beter hanteerwerk net te veel vir die Floridaparkspan. Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege het aanvanklik goed opgeweeg teen Bellville, maar
