) Anger at city’s ‘political’ renaming

Street with no name JANA BEKKER

Anger and emotions flared up at the first Bellville-based meeting over the proposed changing of street names in the northern suburbs, mainly Bellville. Tempers soared, not so much over the proposed changes being made to the existing street names, but because residents see the renaming process as a waste of ratepayers’ money. “Why don’t you take the money and fix the holes in the road in my suburb; why don’t you replace miss-

ing street name signs?” asked one resident at the meeting held at the Bellville Velodrome last week. The man said he has never been able to understand the purpose of changing street names. “I have always thought it was politically motivated and now you have confirmed that,” he said. He said everyone was living in good spirit and understood each other. “Now you are turning people against each other and are causing strife,” he said. This was part of the responses, following an address by Councillor Brett Herron, chairman of the nam-

ing committee. The proposed changes are Jip de Jager Drive to Dulcie September, Vanguard Drive to Govan Mbeki, Willie van Schoor to Jeff Masemole and Hendrik Verwoerd to Beyers Naudé. Herron said the city was hosting a series of public meetings as part of their public consultation process on the naming and renaming proposals. He added that the naming policy, which was adopted by Council in December 2010, provides that Cape Town belongs to all of its people and has a long history of human settle-

ment and a rich and diverse heritage. He said the names of places should reflect the multicultural society “which must be easily and equitably recognised”. According to Herron names create a sense of place; names are the beginnings and ends of journeys; names are place makers and focal points through symbolism, association and remembrance and names have powerful positive or negative meanings for people and can promote community harmony or perpetuate hurt and division. .
