otorists contemplating buying an electric vehicle (EV) may be in for some luck. The City of Cape Town will install two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the civic centre in Bellville later this year, both
will be accessible for free for the first three years. A carport solar photovoltaic (PC) system will also accompany each charger. These stations were donated by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido), and form part of Unido’s Low Carbon Transport South Africa (LCT-SA) project.
At a subcouncil 6 meeting two weeks ago, Mary Haw from the City’s sustainable energy markets department said these chargers will be installed at Bellville and Somerset West’s civic centre. Some of the reasons Bellville was chosen is because it has sufficient space, is easily accessible and there are few other charging stations nearby. The closest one to the Bell-
ville civic centre is at the SMG BMW dealership. There is an estimated 250 to 300 EVs in Cape Town at the moment. With the installation of these chargers, the City hopes to promote EV uptake and also gather data to monitor the impact of EV charging on the electricity grid. V To page 2
