MABEL STREET: FUTURE OF BUS TERMINUS UNCLEAR

Outcome awaited NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

akdale residents will have to wait at least a few weeks to find out what the future of the long-distance bus terminus in Mabel Street will be. This is when the Municipal Planning Tribunal will consider an application recently brought by the owners of the terminus. The property is being leased to the longdistance bus companies by Frans de Jongh, from Jumbo Properties.

The application Jumbo Properties is seeking to consolidate the erven from which the terminus operated. They’re also asking for changes to cer-

tain conditions of their operation in the area. Some of the changes they want include a new covered waiting area and widening of the entrance in Victoria Road to accommodate bus turning movements. As such, they presented a site development plan for approval to the City of Cape Town. This application and site development plan was made public at the end of last year and residents had until 17 December 2019 to comment on the application. Ward councillor Brendan van der Merwe says the application drew objections and therefore has to go before the Municipal Planning Tribunal. Before the hearing, however, Jumbo Pro-

perties will have a chance to respond to the objections. Moving of terminus Despite residents’ hope, rumours of the terminus moving to another property in the CBD soon are unfounded. No matter the outcome of the Municipal Planning Tribunal, the terminus will operate at Mabel Street for now. This has been confirmed by Van der Merwe.

History Scores of long-haul bus companies use the terminus and offices in Mabel street, with its convenient location close to the N1. But the terminus has been a thorn in many people’s sides over the years, with residents

complaining about noise, traffic safety, congestion and litter. Some residents believe the terminus is illequipped to handle the number of buses, let alone the proposed increase in services. In videos shown to TygerBurger groups of people talk loudly in the wee hours, with no consideration for neighbouring properties. The exit of the bus station in the one-way Mabel Street has also been an ongoing problem, as many wrongly use it as an entrance. Often buses struggle to exit into the already congested Mabel Street, making dangerous and illegal turns over the kerb. Added to this, residents say buses have in the past caused a water pipe at the exit to burst. V To page 2
