OWNER: ‘PLANS FOR STUDENT RESIDENCE IN LIMBO’
‘Pigsty’ in Bellville

NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk Numerous people and organisations are fuming at the owner of a group of derelict properties in Bellville. But, says the owner, he is working as fast as he can to get a big student housing project off the ground. The much-hated properties consist of five properties alongside Charl Malan street in the Bellville CBD, a few metres from Middestad Mall. They have been owned by businessman
George Blanckenberg for the past 30 years. Blanckenberg has come increasingly under fire for what roleplayers say is a lack of responsibility in taking care of his property. The properties consist of a big piece of open land which often has large amounts of trash strewn on it. It is bordered by two dilapidated buildings that haven’t been occupied for years. One still says “Kwik Cash Loans” and the other “Homelike Furniture” even though they haven’t been in business for years. Next to the Cash Loans building a scrap metal dealer
is in operation and a makeshift shack has been erected alongside his business. Derek Bock, chief operations officer of the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID), calls the properties a “pigsty”. He says the properties have been the source of multiple headaches – not least the dumping of rubbish which leads to rat infestations which spread to other buildings. He claims the properties grant easy access to criminals and the unsightliness has meant businesses are reluctant to rent offices overlooking the mess.
MID - MONTH FLASH SALE
Jackie Visser, the local councillor, says the place is an eyesore. I have personally seen people urinate there.” Evelyn Reynecke, building manager of the Belle Cape building which borders the properties, says there has been a steady decline in the general look of the area over the past 10 years. Belle Cape rents out offices to a mix of business tenants. “(The situation) is extremely embarrassing. This is what our tenants are looking onto. It devaluates the image (of our building).” To page 2
