ngry Boston residents voiced their disappointment and resentment towards the City and the police at a special meeting held by Boston Neighbourhood

Watch (BNW) last Thursday.

The meeting was attended by among others JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services; members of law enforcement and councillor Leonore van der Walt. Nobody from the police was at the meeting.

Hugo Coetzee, head of the BNW, said their parks were a disgrace, illegal structures were popping up everywhere and crime was rampant. Added to this, taxis are making their roads a nightmare.

Residents have reported an average of 1.7 cases a day at the Bellville police station, but

Coetzee said this number is much higher and people don’t see the point in going to the police. The NHW believes many of their problems are related to an increase in the number of illegal squatters and street people in their area.

he current firearm amnesty period is two months underway and residents still have until 31 May to hand in any unwanted or illegal firearms and ammunition they wish to surrender at their nearest police station for destruction.

After this period, minister of police, Bheki Cele, in January warned that persons found in possession of unlicensed firearms will face the full might of the law.

Unwanted firearms Unwanted firearms consist of any weapons, part of a weapon or ammunition that are unsafe or are lawfully in someone’s possession, who no longer needs or requires the weapon. “That would also in-

clude weapons, parts of a weapon or ammunition that are in a poor state or inherited by someone who is no longer interested in keeping it,” explains police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous.

Illegal firearm An illegal firearm is any firearm, part of a firearm or ammunition, which is not licensed and possessed in accordance with the Firearms Control Act. This includes a firearm, part of a firearm or ammunition, that is not registered to the current owner, does not have a serial number or has a defaced or removed serial number. “If a firearm, (unwanted or illegal) is handed in during this time for the purpose of destruction there will be no compensation,” she says.

Illegal or unwanted firearms may not be sold.

Transfer of weapon not allowed Crous explains that you can’t hand in any firearm in terms of the amnesty period for someone else to apply for a license for that same firearm.

“If, however, your license has expired, you can hand it in during the amnesty period and then apply for a new license, without being prosecuted.”

The weapon will be kept safe by police until such time as the new license is granted.

Crous suggests that gunowners contact the firearm officer at their local police station, who will provide them with more information and assistance and the relevant forms.

Residents who wish to obtain more information in this regard are invited to contact the designated firearm/amnesty officer at their local police station.

Childhood cancer can be cured if diagnosed early enough, and if there is adequate access to the required physical facilities and equipment to ensure optimal healthcare.

This is a message shared recently by the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust and Tygerberg Hospital, who in partnership with the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (Choc), will be honouring International Childhood Cancer Day on Friday morning by hosting a special event at the hospital.

“Non-government organisations partnerships are important to assist with supporting families as childhood cancer is a major burden to families, especially in the context of poverty and unemployment in South Africa,” says Mariana Kruger, executive head of paediatrics and child health, and paediatric oncologist at Stellenbosch University

Choc provides essential supportive services to such families by ensuring that paediatric oncology units have lodger facilities for parents and their children.

Furthermore, Choc also assists with transport funding and food parcels for families in need.

They are also actively involved in childhood awareness programmes for parents and the public at large, as well as training of healthcare workers to recognize childhood cancer.

The Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Trust works to support the paediatric oncology unit in Tygerberg Hospital to obtain the essential equipment needed for these children.

Die skool glo in vroeë intervensie, sê Hodgson. “As jy ’n kind na twee en ’n half jaar hierheen bring, is dit byna te laat. Dan het die kind ’n ander program nodig, soos ’n gebaretaal-program. Tot en met twee en ’n half jaar het jou visuele brein alles gedoen. So die ouditiewe brein het nooit gegroei nie. Dan het jy in alle waarskynlikheid ’n visuele-program nodig, tensy jy nog ’n bietjie gehoor gehad het,” sê sy.

Hodgson sê ouers moet hul kinders se gehoor op die dag van hul geboorte laat toets.

“Dan word jy gou by die sentrum ingepas.”

Een uit 17 babas word daagliks met ’n gehoorverlies gebore. “Baie van hulle word nie aangeteken nie. Dis gewoonlik dié wat in staatshospitale gebore word, waar daar nie sulke toetse gedoen word nie.”

Teen een- tot twee-jarige leeftyd begin ouers egter te wonder waarom hul kind nog nie spraak ontwikkel het nie.

“Die agterstand kan egter nie maklik in-

gehaal word nie,” sê Hodgson.

Ná babas gediagnoseer is, begin die tweede deel van behandeling – die toepassing van die korrekte gehoortegnologie. “Jy moet die regte apparaat vir die regte tipe verlies hê.”

Dit sluit in die oorvlak-apparaat agter die oor, tot ’n kogliêre inplanting vir leerders met erge gehoorverlies. “Maar dan kry ons ook die Bone Anchored Hearing Aid, oftewel Baha-apparaat, vir die leerders wat gebore is sonder ore of met klein ore,” verduidelik Hodgson. Sy sê die laaste deel is die ouers se samewerking.

Die sentrum beskik oor die Children Hearing and Talking Centre, oftewel die Chatsentrum, waar ouers opgelei word in hoe om met hul dowe kinders te werk.

Die sentrum, met 21 klasse en 77 personeellede, bedien die hele Sub-Sahara-Afrika streek, insluitende lande soos Namibië, Botswana, Malawi en Mauritius.

“Ons bied die enigste program in Afrika wat ’n vroeëintervensie-program volg.”

Die sentrum volg die Caps-kurrikulum en bied ook ’n reeks sportkodes aan. Die skool gaan ook op gereelde klasuitstappies.

Court cases hamper street people efforts NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

T

he City of Cape Town is facing an uphill battle against street people and squatting, says JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security and social services.

Smith was the guest speaker at a community meeting held in Boston, Bellville last Thursday.

“You’re frustrated at the shacks in the streets and so am I,” he said to the crowd.

“I rage at it every day.”

But the City’s hands are increasingly tied due to court cases, a lack of funds and a broken justice system.

Court cases In the one case, the Western Cape High Court in December reinstated an order which prohibited the City from fining people living on the streets or confiscating their property.

Smith sketched a grim picture of the current state in the City. He said the problems

Another case relates to the refugees who are living inside and outside the Central Methodist Church on Greenmarket Square.

They have been granted sanctuary by the church after being evicted from the area outside the Waldorf building in St George’s Mall. The refugees are demanding, among other things, emergency housing and relocation to the country of their choosing, which the City and the department of home affairs is refusing.

In staying around the church, the refugees have transgressed various City bylaws, Smith says. What has followed has been a complex legal matter which has led the City to apply to the Western Cape High Court to allow them to enforce their by-laws.

Judgment in this matter has been reserved until February 17.

“Paralysed” system Smith said traditionally the City tackled the street people issue by using clean-up op-

erations, with teams working 24 hours a day trying to tackle the issue. This has been fruitless, he said. The street people are moved on, only to return later on.

They can’t be arrested as they don’t have home addresses and in the past, the courts refused to process cases without home addresses. Part of one of the court cases against the City is also aimed at stopping them from arresting people.

Earlier this year the City decided to focus on prosecutions and metro officers started handing out fines to street people transgressing their by-laws.

This led to public outcry.

Law enforcement is stuck with a situation without a solution, he claimed. “You can chase the person off or you can issue a fine, but it’s unlikely to result in any consequence.”

There’s nothing you can do to the homeless people. The better you understand the system, the better you’ll understand why the system is paralysed.”

they were seeing was directly caused by the national government’s implosion. The City has had to use ratepayers’ money to subsidise services which the national government is failing to deliver. One example is that of water. The City’s job is water reticulation, not augmentation, yet they’ve had to use rates money to pay for this. They’ve also had to hire additional law enforcement officers as the police fail to provide adequate crime prevention support. “We’re using your rates money to pay for something you’ve already paid for in your tax money.”

Smith said this means the City will never again be able to provide the type of services it did 15 years ago. He spoke at length about how their hands are tied when it comes to street people (more on page 3). The fact that Boston is seeing an increase in street people is caused in part by the success of the Voortrekker Road Corridor District (VRCID), he said. Across the metro, areas with successful CIDs lead to problems moving into adjacent neighbourhoods.

Dit is weer tyd vir die Downsindroom-vereniging van die Wes-Kaap (DSAWC) se jaarlikse fietstoer George toe.

Die klub bestaan uit werknemers van die Goodwood-gevangenisdienste, wat onder meer in Goodwood en in Bellville gestasioneer is.

Vanjaar gaan altesaam 11 fietsryers die 473 km-roete aandurf en via Bredasdorp en Mosselbaai na George ry.

Hulle spring op 24 Februarie weg en sal na verwagting op 28 Februarie by hul bestemming aankom. Tussen-in gaan hulle op verskillende dorpe stop, waar hulle by skole gaan aanklop en bewustheid oor downsindroom kweek. Die onderskeie skole hou dikwels hul eie insamelingsprojekte en skenk dan die geld aan die fietsryers om vir die DSAWC te gee.

Jodi Hendriks, ’n downsindroom-lyer, begelei hulle saam met enkele ander DSAWCpersoneel. Hendriks, ’n groot Kurt Darrenliefhebber, lewer gewoonlik ’n klein vertoning.

Patrick Darlow sê die DSAWC word nie deur die staat ondersteun nie en het elke sent nodig wat vir hulle ingesamel word.

Let the spirit of love favour you F

ew know that there were many early Christian martyrs called Valentine.

The most famous of them during the time of Roman emperor Claudius II, was executed for conducting weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry, and also because he happened to minister to Christians in Rome, which was a Pagan religious city at the time.

Before his execution on 14 February in AD 496, Saint Valentine performed a miracle by restoring the sight of his jailer’s blind daughter, Julia, and then endearingly wrote a farewell letter to her signed: “Your Valentine”.

In order to remind the soldiers who converted to Christianity and God’s love, Saint Valentine gave them hearts, which he apparently cut from parchment, and so that’s why the heart has featured ever since. But what has the love we associate

today with Valentine’s Day, got to do with it all?

Firstly, Saint Valentine wore a purple

amethyst finger ring with the image of Cupid carved on it (Cupid being the god of love, or in ancient Greece, Eros). Secondly the amethyst became the birthstone of February – a stone which attracts love.

And so this Valentine’s weekend, be sure to wear some piece of apparel in the colour of the amethyst, and maybe add an emblem of a red heart to it, to show your love for your spouse, current lover, or one you still hope to meet.

Treat your loved one to a pink prawn picnic While many happy couples will be exploring restaurants and other romantic spots to mark Valentine’s Day, there are some who prefer to avoid the bustle and do something special at home.

Keshan Rambarun, executive chef at The Table Bay, shares an easy to follow Braai’d Lemongrass Tiger Prawns recipe with dipping sauces that oozes romance.

“This is a recipe I have prepared many times and it never gets old. Go out to your garden or venture to the beach or a quiet picnic spot. Do most of the preparation at home. The prawns can be pre-marinated and dipping sauces prepared beforehand.

Garlic bread and salad are optional, but a glass of good wine or champagne is a must,” he says.

Recipe | Braai’d Lemongrass Tiger Prawns You will need 1kg Tiger prawns, deveined and butterflied.

For the marinade . 6 Lemon grass spears . Lemon olive oil . 2 garlic cloves . 30ml siracha sauce . 20g fresh coriander

Mix the ingredients together and pre-marinate the prawns.

Grill prawns over hot coals until the shells turn pink.

For each of the following dipping sauces, simply mix the ingredients together and serve with the prawns.

Giving back: Tyger Valley Shopping Centre donated just over R35 000 to Goedgedacht Trust, a charitable and educational trust seeking to transform rural communities by offering children the opportunity to become healthy, self-confident, educated young people.

The funds were raised through last year’s festive wrapping and Carols by Candle Light. The Centre also collected 150 gifts from shoppers which were handed over to children. Dit is die negende agtereenvolgende jaar dat die geleentheid deur Radio Tygerberg 104FM, in samewerking met TygerBurger en Tygervallei-winkelsentrum, aangebied word.

Vanjaar se wedloop vind op die eerste Saterdag van die skoolvakansie plaas. Organiseerders verwag daarom ’n rekordgetal drawwers wat by die wegspringpunt by die Tygervallei-winkelsentrum sal opdaag.

Deelnemers kan kies uit ’n halfmarathon van 21.1km, ’n 10 km-draf en ’n 6 km-pretstap vir die hele gesin. Lede van Discovery Vitality verdien bonuspunte vir deelname.

Vanjaar sal ’n gedeelte van die inskrywingsgeld aan die Cape Town Drug Counseling Centre geskenk word. Hierdie sentrum bied ’n buitepasiëntprogram aan van ses weke waaraan pasiënte van alle ouderdomme en hul families kan deelneem. Hoewel daar net drie kantore is – in Observatory,

Mitchells Plain en Atlantis – bedien die sentrum jaarliks bykans 1 000 nuwe pasiënte uit sowat 178 gemeenskappe oor die Kaapse metropool heen.

Buiten die pret op die dag kwalifiseer deelnemers aan die Radio Tygerberg104fm TygerRun/Walk vir die gelukstrekking by die prysuitdeling.

Flower arrangers entranced Creative Contemporary was the theme of the first demonstration of the year for the Durbanville Flower Club.

Kobus Conradie, head of the teachers’ panel of the Western Cape Association of Flower Arrangers (WCAFA), entranced members with his interpretation of this theme.

Beware: burglars (may) block beams NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

urglars aren’t out in droves blocking security beams to gain access to homes, but it’s always good to use cau-

tion.

A post on social media recently warned homeowners about burglars who block security beams by placing plastic bottles or bags in front of them, thereby blocking them from working.

The police say this isn’t something they’ve come across recently.

“Our sector commanders aren’t aware (of this method),” says Capt Jonathan Blankenberg, spokesperson of the Bellville police station.

In many cases they’ve observed robbers sneak below the beams, stopping them from activating, he adds.

Blocking blockages: A sand trap was installed on the corner of Kasselsvlei Road and Peter Barlow Drive in Bellville South last week. The trap will prevent sewer blockages and will provide relief to those in Stilwaney Crescent, Sacks Circle Industrial and parts of Glenhaven. Despite this, a security group and neighbourhood watch TygerBurger spoke to have both dealt with plastic bottles being placed over beams.

Hennie Groenewald, a spokesperson for Bassett alarms, says it’s only possible to block beams in this way if the beams are of an older kind. Newer beams come with antimasking capabilities.

Stephen Swartz, operations manager of CNI Security, agrees. He says it’s good to evaluate the layout of your beams on the outside of your house and move them if necessary or to upgrade to the anti-masking type.

Blankenberg says it’s important to keep a lookout for any suspicious person or vehicle and to report them immediately.

“Keep watch, especially when your neighbour isn’t home because fighting crime is everyone’s responsibility.”

Rugbypale by stadion weer (en weer) gesteel NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk Diegene wat sukkel om oor ’n rugbypaal te skop, moet by die Rosina Paarwaterstadion in Bellville-Suid gaan oefen.

Hier is twee velde se dwarspale onlangs gesteel – die derde keer sedert Junie 2018.

Warren Isaacs, afrigter van die Bellville-rugbyklub, sê hulle is heeltemal ontmoedig deur die voorval wat twee weke gelede plaasgevind het.

Buiten die dwarspaal het diewe ook ’n ander rugbypaal so gestroop dat net die een regoppaal oor is.

Isaacs vertel daar is een veiligheids-

wag wat die gebied patrolleer, wat hy voel onvoldoende is aangesien die stadion ’n rugby-, sokker- en krieketveld insluit.

Benewens hul diefstalprobleme sukkel die klub ook al sowat ses jaar lank om drinkwater by die stadion te kry.

Isaacs sê hulle het intussen die A-veld se pale vervang omdat hulle wedstryde moes speel.

Op Facebook beweer gemeenskapslede “tikkoppe” is vir die diefstal verantwoordelik. Ander sê sloopwerwe in Bellville-Suid moet gesluit word.

Die Stad Kaapstad en die polisie het nie teen druktyd op navrae gereageer nie.

CPFs get the green light On Thursday the provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, met with the provincial commissioner of police, Lt Gen Yolisa Matakata, and the chair of the provincial CPF board, Francina Lucas, to discuss the continuation of the community policing forum (CPF) electoral annual meetings.

It was agreed that the provincial commissioner would withdraw the moratorium currently placed on the CPF electoral meetings.

“The lifting of the moratorium and the continuation of the CPF electoral meetings are subject to the elections being officiated by both a representative from the community safety department and the police station commander. Those meetings which take place without the station commander and a department representative will be invalid, impacting on the CPFs’ eligibility to receive funding from department,” Fritz said in a statement.

Sy was 75 jaar oud toe sy op 31 Januarie in Somerset-Wes dood is.

Smit het landwye aanhang geniet en het meer as 200 boeke geskryf.

Sy het ook bydraes aan Sarie, Rooi Rose, Die Kerkbode, Die Voorligter en LiG gelewer.

Die skool het in 1977 sy deure geopen en gaan al van geslag tot geslag. Die knip van die lint is juis deur Corrie Mars, een van die skool se eerste leerders en haar kleindogter, Joanieke (pre-graad R) gedoen.

Watch holds safety talk for women, seniors Oakdale Watch is inviting ladies and senior citizens to attend an event with talks on safety and security issues.

Guest speakers will be from the police and Bassett security. There will also be an opportunity to meet some of the watch’s patrollers.

“We as Oakdale Watch feel these talks are very important to continue to protect all

our residents of Oakdale and the fight against crime,” says Kenny Dinwoodie from the Watch.

The meeting will take place at 09:00 on Saturday 22 February at Baruch Church, Sydney Street, Oakdale. Attendance is free. Tea and coffee will be available.

Petrolprys pla ons nie juis in Suid-Afrika Die petrolprys pla Suid-Afrikaners nie juis nie. En die regering weet dit.

Ons kan darem nog petrol kry, enige tyd van die dag of nag, in enige volume en byna op enige plek.

Dieselfde kan ongelukkig nie van elektrisiteit gesê word nie.

In Suid-Afrika is ons om verskeie redes aan ons voertuie verknog. Dis enersyds ’n statussimbool en andersyds ’n noodsaaklikheid. Maar as iemand in ’n fô-baai-fô voor jou by die pompe staan en sy twee tenks volmaak, sien jy dit draai sommer maklik by R2 000 op ’n slag.

Selfs al maak die regering oornag die petrolprys R30 per liter, sal ons waarskynlik steeds, en net soveel, met ons motors ry. Dit weet die regering ook, so hy laai die petrolprys na hartelus met allerhande belastings, en Jan Publiek betaal maar.

Dit was nog altyd die staat se ou melkkoei. En sy is net nóóit droog nie.

Mense sou lankal en masse met motorfietse en 125cc-scooters gery het as die petrolprys hulle gepla het. In die Ooste, in lande soos Viëtnam, China en Japan, is dit die norm. Ma, pa, twee kinders en die hond ry op ’n scooter.

Daar is tonnels, brûe, bane en parkeergarages by die mall nét vir scooters. Motors is uitsonderlik, want daar is nie plek nie.

Maar al ry mense daar vier op ’n motorfiets, swem hulle nie in die see nie, “because its dangerous”.

Ek wil nou nie ’n donderpadda wees nie, maar nou die dag staan ek by Checkers en ’n tante kom in een van daai fô-baai-fô’s aangery.

Sy kry ’n parkeerplek, maar dis baie nou. Hoe nou gemaak? Vorentoe en agtertoe, vorentoe en agtertoe en weer vorentoe, so ja. En agter haar dam die verkeer op. Nou wag ons maar.

En dis toe ek voel ek moet iets sê. Toe sy uitklim, sê ek “mevrou, sê bietjie vir jou man hy moet vir jou ’n klein karretjie koop”. “Ja,” seg sy, “ek hét al vir hom gesê”.

Nou watter man wil dan sy vrou met ’n fô-baai-fô straf? Of moet sy daarmee ry net vir die curb hopping wanneer sy Saterdae vir Jangotliebantonius by die skolesport gaan aflaai? Daar is mos gewoonlik nie parkeerplek nie, behalwe op die sypaadjie.

Of dalk wíl mevrou met ’n V8-Humvee in die dorp ry, want ewe skielik is sy baie groter as al die ander voertuie en kan sy lekker op hulle afkyk – en op hulle neersien. En die petrol? Ag nee wat, manlief se platinum-kredietkaart betaal mos, geen probleem dáár nie.

Daardie selfde tante kon op dieselfde plekke kom met ’n klein stadsmotor wat ’n kwart van die petrol van ’n Hummer gebruik. Dis eintlik kotsmislik, dié conspicuous consumption, want dis presies wat dit is. Dit skreeu dit eintlik uit: Kyk hoeveel kan ék tog mors!

Miskien kan iemand in my tweede lewe vir my verduidelik wat die rasionaal daaragter is om met ’n reusevoertuig, wat vir die berge en modder bedoel is, op teerstrate te ry. Of dalk is dit ’n omen van wat op ons wag: strate vol gate dat dit soos die Grand Canyon lyk?

In daai geval sou ek nie eens ’n Hummer wou hê nie, ook nie ’n Land Rover-, Mahindra- of Haval-4 x 4 óf ’n scooter nie, nee wat. Dán wil ek een van daai nuwe drones met ’n tweesitplek-kajuit en aircon hê. Hy sit nie in verkeer vas nie, slurp nie petrol of diesel op nie en is boonop veiliger.

Do away with these plastics With the Western world intent on reducing single-use plastics, it is noticeable that fresh milk is still sold here mainly in plastic bottles and bags.

I recycle way more milk bottles than any other plastic, which shows how prevalent they are.

Surely other containers such as Tetra pak cartons and glass should be encouraged. Even aluminium cans can be tried as they are doing in the wine industry, and they are not more expensive per millilitre than a bottle.

Millennials expect big businesses to be more environmentally conscious and therefore some packaging may initially be more expensive, but the law of averages will apply and the costs will come down.

Logically the focus should be on preserving the environment, not maximising profit.

Single-use plastic containers should be priced much higher than the alternatives, thereby reducing the demand and ultimately phasing them out.

Hoekom hier kaartjies uitskryf?

Ek moes onlangs die Louis Leipoldt-hospitaal besoek.

Dit was ’n absolute nagmerrie om parkering te kry en ek het letterlik 30 minute lank op en af gery in elke straat rondom die hospitaal.

Ek kan verstaan dat sekere motoriste uit desperaatheid later parkeer waar hulle ook al ’n gaatjie kry.

Wat ek wel kon sien, is dat niemand iemand vas parkeer

het nie of ’n onderneming se parkering “gesteel” het nie.

Wat my egter so vies maak, is dat daar wragtig ’n verkeerskonstabel rondloop en kaartjies uitskryf vir elke motor wat nie in ’n parkeerplek geparkeer is nie.

Ek is ’n wetsgehoorsame burger, maar ek sou regtig anderpad kyk in hierdie situasie.

Die mense kom hospitaal toe om ’n goeie rede. En hier is geen parkering nie.

Ek hoop hy is trots op die feit dat hy dalk ’n kaartjie vir iemand uitgeskryf het wat iemand daardie dag aan die dood afgestaan het.

What they do not take into consideration is that they have full-face helmets on and the exhaust outlet is behind them, so the noise that they hear is behind them. Not so for the people around them who have to put up with the irritating noise.

I reside in Sonkring and we have to put up with a number of these irresponsible people racing during the night starting from 23:00 to sometimes 04:00 in the morning.

Naturally, no traffic officers are visible to stop this practice, or check the decibel levels of the exhausts, although they have speed cameras on these roads.

Please report them to the authorities if you see them speeding. All motorcyclists should carry an organ donor card as they will become one sooner or later if they drive in the manner that they do.

‘Hobo’ has a suggestion I agree with C Liebenberg that handing out money at traffic lights isn’t solving the beggar’s problem. About 70% of them end up as substance abusers because they aren’t interested in uplifting themselves.

The other 30%, like myself, get to uplift ourselves and get temporary help at shelters only for six months. We are not seen as someone that really needs urgent help and support from their social workers or groups. We are not seen as substance abuse addicts, only as “homeless” with or without a job.

I “fell down” after a divorce at 52-years-old and found it difficult to find a place to stay as it’s extremely expensive.

For instance, to move into a place of R2 500 per month works out R7 500 (R2 500 times three is R7 500).

Can’t big companies, organisations, shopping groups etcetera “invest” in hostels as property investments?

A big building with 20 rooms, each room with four double bunk beds and a locker per bed gives you an income of R120 000 (R1 500 per bed). Ablutions and showers etcetera can be shared.

Beneficiaries honoured at Casual Day awards KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels Top performers for the annual Casual Day campaign were honoured on Friday 7 February for their support in raising funds for a good cause.

The function, held at the Lagoon Beach Hotel in Milnerton, awarded avid supporters and donors who raised a whopping R29 million for the disability sector.

Beneficiaries included the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) provincial structures, more than 100 schools, several NGOs and the police and department of defence.

Guests were entertained by the Athlone School for the Blind marimba band.

Casual Day is celebrating its 26th year and the theme for 2020 is “Side by side for equality”. This year, they will be partnering with world-renowned Disney.

At the ceremony, the Ysterplaat Air Force Base walked away with an award for the top five best performing department of defence in the province.

scooped first place for best performing NGO in the province, while the Filia School bagged second place for best performing NGO. Addressing attendees at the breakfast awards, NCPD national director, Therina Wentzel-du Toit, said Casual Day encourages everyone to buy a sticker for R10 to give material support to persons with disabilities.

“We are extremely grateful towards all the beneficiaries who participated in the 2019 Casual Day. Without them, we would never be able to raise enough funds for persons with disabilities. We salute them all,” Wentzel-du Toit said.

The organisations that raised the most donations for Casual Day in the country are Edcon, Game and Dion Wired, while CNA Cavendish took top spot for raising the most funds in the province.

Wentzel-du Toit added, “We hope this year will be bigger and better as we are striving to raise much more funds than last year. We are inviting all members of the public to participate and join in the fun.”

he long days of the elderly in the Onze Molen frail care centre were cheered up recently with a special pamper morning.

This was made possible by Creative Hope, which took hands with Absolute Beauty in Brackenfell to pamper the elderly.

The morning was held on Monday 27 January.

“Sonja Vos and her amazing team from Absolute Beauty treated our elderly to a special morning of pampering . . . their hands, feet, as well as head massages and even a blowdry,” says Penny Jansen van Vuuren, founder of Creative Hope.

“The expressions of enjoyment and gratitude on their faces were priceless. Here at Creative Hope we are driven by one single goal, to create hope for our elderly in frail care,” she says.

“We do weekly art projects in the frail care units of retirement villages. Each session is an hour in a group with a maximum of 12 seniors.

Couples should be ‘in tune’ when selling T

he fact that South Africa recognises so many kinds of marriage is a tribute to an inclusive Constitution, but it can create some confusion when it comes to property sales.

Gerhard Kotzé, managing director of the RealNet estate agency group says a couple married in community of property must both sign all the relevant documents – especially the offer to purchase – to ensure a valid sale.

“However, one spouse does not need the consent of the other to award a mandate to an estate agent, even if the property forms part of a joint estate. What is more, the other spouse cannot then award a similar mandate to another agent or contest the rate of sales commission agreed to in the original

mandate,” he says.

Kotzé says this is just another twist in the complex legal framework that governs the sale and purchase of residential property in South Africa – and that makes it imperative for home buyers and sellers to deal only with qualified and experienced estate agents.

“In South Africa we respect marriages concluded in terms of civil or customary laws and in terms of many specific cultures and religions, but no matter what type of ceremony took place, the majority are in fact governed by the Matrimonial Property Act when it comes to the couple’s assets.”

Kotzé says this legislation provides that couples who have not signed an antenuptial contract are by default married in community of property, a system in which both spous-

es have an equal share in any property, belongings and liabilities that they bring into the marriage or acquire during the marriage.

“Couples married in this way also have equal power to administer and dispose of their assets and can act independently of each other – except when it comes to the sale of fixed property and the signing of suretyships and credit agreements.

“And working with an agent who does not understand that both husband and wife married in community of property must sign all documents relating to the sale could lead to significant financial loss,” he explains.

If a deal falls through because the second spouse actually refuses to sign the sale agreement, Kotzé notes that the buyer could

lose out on interest that could have been earned on a deposit or on the purchase of another suitable property where the sellers were not at odds.

“Or even if there is just a delay while the second signature is sought, it might mean that the buyer incurs extra holding costs on his own property or has to pay more rent instead of starting to pay off his new home loan.

“A professional agent will however be aware of the potential pitfalls, especially in situations where there seems to be any disagreement between a couple about selling their property, and is unlikely to have accepted a mandate signed by only one spouse married in community of property in the first place.”

Slave route challenge turns 10 Spectacular routes for walking and running. Breathtakingly beautiful views of District Six, Gardens, Bo-Kaap and the Atlantic Seaboard. Historical landmarks, commemorative medal and a koesister.

Yes, you guessed it. The Slave Route Challenge Powered by Brimstone returns on Sunday 23 February 2020 to the Grand Parade in Cape Town.

“Our event caters for the avid runner or walker and novice with a half marathon, 10km run, 10km walk and 5km fun run/walk on offer. An event which caters for the entire family and brings together our community. The added appeal of this event is that it takes ownership of our past, changes the narrative of our heritage and transforms it into a legacy for future generations,” says spokesperson Fatima Allie.

The route starts in front of City Hall in Darling Street, right in front of the balcony where the late President Nelson Mandela made his first speech after his release from Victor Verster Prison.

There are seven refreshment stations on the route and koesisters will be served in the Bo-Kaap at Koesister Hill. A tog bag facility is available on the Grand Parade.

or the 51 945 people who made their way to Cape Town Stadium on Friday 7 February for the Match In Africa, it was a day which will not be easily forgotten. The figure, a new world record attendance for a single tennis match, also helped contribute to the $3.5 million (approximately R54.6 million) donated to the Roger Federer Foundation, which will be used to support education in rural South Africa.

The amount of money also surpassed the figures achieved in the previous five editions of this event (known previously as the Match For Africa).

The tennis match between 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and his great rival, 19-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, almost took a back seat, which saw the duo on a whirlwind tour of the City, starting with Federer’s arrival in Cape Town on Wednesday 5 February, and included an impromptu warm-up session between the two on the Grand Parade.

Preceding the match on Friday, both Federer and Nadal also took part in a play session with children from Hangberg pre-primary school in Hout Bay. The aim was to teach the children through various physical activities, combining language, motor skills and perception. Following his practice session with Nadal, Federer reminisced on his previous visits to South Africa, which is his mother’s country of birth.

“I don’t remember playing here in Cape Town 20 years ago, because I was on vacation and you rest your body. When I was little, I was playing in Joburg and other places where I was travelling. I remember I got a racquet from my parents here when I was little. After all this time it has gotten to this and to play in a stadium like this it is beautiful and my mom is very happy right now.”

Federer would go on to team up with Bill Gates in a celebrity doubles match against Nadal and his partner, Trevor Noah, which was won 6-3 by Federer and Gates, who dub-

bed themselves “Gateserer”.

The result was of little consequence as the four kept the crowd entertained with witty quips as they had themselves mic’d up for the crowd and audience at home to listen in on.

“At the end of the day I think doing things together, this is actually in a way what we are doing tonight, we are all getting together for a good cause and to see what comes out of it. If I am alone out here, I cannot fill a stadium, but with the three other guys I can,” Federer said before the match.

Tickets to the event were sold out within 10 minutes and Federer said he’s open to collaborating for future charitable efforts.

“It is important to share information and to see where the synergies are and how we can do things together. At the end of the day, we are all seeking the impact, not for personal glory or legacy. We are here to leave a profound impact on kids’ lives and if that happens that we can do things together and we know each other and we get along, it is a win-win-win.”

Federer would go on to beat his great rival Nadal in three competitive sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, but the result was of little consequence as the cause outweighed any performance.

“Just one of these days that you don’t forget. Super happy to be playing here in Cape Town for the first time in my life. I can’t thank the people here in Cape Town who came to the stadium and created an unforgettable atmosphere and made this day even more special. Super happy to see Roger’s emotions out there. I know how important it is for him playing here,” said Nadal.

After the match, Federer was still coming to terms with the emotional occasion, which exceeded his expectations.

“I was very emotional when I walked out for the doubles and when I had to take the mic right away there, that was hard. I did not know what to say because I really felt overwhelmed with emotions there. After that, I was able to play a bit of tennis and when I came back for the singles, I was more in a place of pure happiness.”

Durbanville (186) het egter lelik bloedneus gekry van Rondebosch (188/3) nadat André Malan (75) nie genoegsame ondersteuning van sy kolfmaats gekry het nie.

Bellville (217/7) het die Ikeys (78) Saterdag deeglik gekarnuffel met stewige bydraes deur Justin Dill (55*), Marcus Fourie (48 en

3/18) en Mpilo Njoloza (5/22).

Naelskraapse uitslae was ’n kenmerk van die wedstryde in die eerste liga. Terwyl Tygerberg (167/8) met twee paaltjies teen Ottoman gewen het en Kraaifontein (194/4) met nege lopies beter daaraan toe was as Milnerton (185), het Kuilsrivier (158) met ’n enkele paaltjie teen Rylands verloor.

Noordelikes-Goodwood (201) het met vier lopies tekortgeskiet teen Primrose.

Curtley Louw (Tygerberg, 59) en Jeandré Jumat (Kraaifontein, 68*) het ’n vername rol gespeel in hul spanne se oorwinnings terwyl Matthew Snyman (52) mooi op stryk was vir Milnerton. 22ND GRYPHON 99ER : 3 077 CYCLISTS TAKE PART

Cycle Tour a great success A total of 3 077 cyclists made their way to Durbanville on Saturday for the 22nd Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour, the third largest cycle race in the Western Cape. The 103 km route took them on Van Schoorsdrif, Vissershok, Tygerberg Valley and Contermanskloof Roads.

total of 3 077 cyclists made their way to Durbanville on Saturday for the 22nd Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour.

The event is the third largest cycle race in the Western Cape and is organised and hosted by El Shaddai Christian School in Durbanville.

Craig Boyes won the 103 km men’s event with a time of 2:29:34.

Tyrone Filander won the coveted King of the Mountain prize. Trihas Tesfay won the ladies 103 km with

a time of 2:41:25.

“Conditions were ideal on race day, starting off with cool temperatures and little wind. A fantastic race was enjoyed by all and riders enjoyed the new routes,” says Therese Videler, marketing head of 99er Cycle Tour.

The main lucky draw prize giving at this year’s Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour had R100 000 worth of great prizes up for grabs, which included two Cannondale bicycles from D’Ville Cyclery in Giant Dur-

banville.

“Saturday saw the 99er host another successful and indeed our 22nd cycle race,” says Morne Vorster, chair of the race organising committee.

“With our race being a seeding event for the 2020 Cape Town Cycle Tour, we saw over 3 000 cyclists take on a new route and the feedback we have received so far is overwhelmingly positive. We want to thank all the cyclists who participated, as well as all our volunteers

Die bestuurder van die FNB Varsitybeker, Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi, glo die twee kompetisies is net die regte inspuiting om rugby te ontwikkel.

“Sewe universiteite neem in die Varsityskildkompetisie deel en dit is ons grootste groeimark wat rugby betref,” sê hy.

Altesame 215 000 studente – ’n derde van die totale universiteitsgemeenskap – word in die Varsityskild verteenwoordig.

“Ons het na die pleidooie van die ondersteuners geluister dat die wedstryde ook uitgesaai word, en Vrydae kan die studente nou sien hoe hul universiteitspanne teen ander vaar,” sê Nesi.

In 2019 het die eerste Oos-Kaapse dubbele derbywedstryde in die BCM-stadion in Oos-Londen afgeskop en vanjaar sal dit ook nie anders wees nie.

“Op 21 Februarie sal die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit, ook bekend as die Madibaz, die twee derbies huisves. Die Universiteit van Fort

Hare pak die Universiteit van Rhodes en die Madibaz ontvang besoek van Walter Sisulu Universiteit.

“Die spanne het ook die kans om bevorder te word na die Varsitybeker wanneer ’n promosie/ relegasiewedstryd gespeel word.

“Die twee top-spanne van die Varsityskild-punteleer van 2019 en 2020 kry outomaties bevordering na die Varsitybeker vir 2021. Die span wat onder op die punteleer in die Varsitybeker eindig oor die gekombineerde punteleer van 2019 en 2020, word gerelegeer tot die Varsityskild vir 2021,” sê Nesi.

Fairmont (t De Kuilen), The Settlers (t Tygerberg), Curro (t HS Bellville) en Stellenberg (t Brackenfell) kon almal spog met oorwinnings in die AllSports Travel-liga vir o.15-spanne. Die groot uitblinker was Sean Dednam (Curro, 60). In die L & L Buttner-liga vir o.14-spanne het HS Bellville met ’n grootse spanpoging maklik met Fairbairn afgereken terwyl Brackenfell te sterk was vir Stellenberg.
