F
riday saw the launch of futsal at Good Hope Adventist High School in Sarepta, Kuils River. The sport, which can be described as a professional form of five-a-side soccer, will be offered to both boys and girls and forms part of an initiative between the school and the Cape Town Metropolitan Futsal League (CTMFL). Nathan Doman, head of sport at Good Hope Adventist High School, says the adopting of the sport code started with the school receiving an email from CTMFL, asking whether they would like to offer the sport at the school. “The president of CTMFL, Gary Walbrugh, who happens to be a past pupil, came to check out our hall. After the visit we had many meetings and things just took off from there,” says Doman. To get things started on a good note, a futsal tournament was hosted at the school, in which learners participated enthusiastical-
ly. One of the focus areas of the initiative is to involve more girls in the sport, says Doman. Kurt Lunzmann from CTMFL explains that the key differences between soccer and futsal include a difference in the playing surface (where soccer is played on grass, futsal is played indoors on a hard surface), the duration of the game, different footwear, and of course the fact that a futsal team only has five players. “Our long-term goals include developing players to play at provincial and national level and our short-term goals include keeping the learners busy with tournaments and within the leagues,” says Lunzmann. He confirms that Good Hope Adventist High School will play against other local schools such as De Kuilen High School and Mikro Primary School. Both staff and learners have expressed their excitement at being able to participate in the sport code. VWhat is your opinion on this article? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.
