1.0 Project Introduction

In “Project 2 - Integrated Developed Design”, students were tasked with using the information gained from the sociospatial site analysis in project one to create an innovate digital library that bridges memory and knowledge. The integrated developed design phase aims to create an impactful, creative, and functional response to the site.
It will do this by first outlining the design philosophy and approach taken when creating the theme for the project regarding memory, community and innovation. Next, it will Analyse a relevent precedent study and use it to understand some vital design functionalities, community drivers, and placemaking.
After this, the portfolio will delve into the site location, concept move diagrams, program diagrams, various plans, sections and elevations, and then explore the material, environmental, and structural impact of the design. Lastly, it present some renders of the final design
4 1.1 Project Brief
Abstergo Digital Library aims to create a one of a kind, cutting edge, digital library that will use genetic data to reconstruct memories and allow playback for the user. It will do this via the Animus, Abstergo’s core piece of technology. The animus bed scans the users DNA and memory information to allow for memories to be accessed through virtual reality. Memories can also be entered if the user has obtained genetic material from any other person, providing all ethical regulations are met.
The library will create a blend between digital and physical information, becoming a unifying hub for knowledge related endeavours, allowing visitors from all walks of life to collaborate and communicate. The library also aims to create a community within the local area, enhancing the public space and green space within the vicinity.
This approach has been taken because it allows for a new wave of technological evolution. If users can access their memories and memories of others first hand, it will not only allow humanity to get to know itself better, but it will also allow us to know each other better through direct experience of other peoples consciousness, enhancing humanity’s sense of community.

2.0 Precedent Study
2.1 Precedent Study
Name: Te Ara Ātea Library & Community Centre
Architect: Warren & Mahoney
Location: Christchurch, New Zealand
Date: 2021
This library is an interesting precedent study because it also serves as a community centre, which is a useful function for the library project because the library being designed needs to increase the public-ness and connectedness of the local area. Furthermore, the library utilized a sweeping, slotted facade to control daylight penetration. This may be a useful architectural concept to implement into the final design.
Lastly, this library was designed to serve as a navigating beacon throughout the urban landscape, enhancing the traversal of the surrounding built environment.

The buildings facade is the be surround in the an angled, timber, louvred facade that allows for daylight control. The material is not only sustainable, but creates a pleasing aesthetic and is also lightweight, making construction easier.
The timber facade is also to have triple glazed infil panels between each louvre to allow daylight penetration while also protecting the building from wind and rain. The external plane of the glazing is the to coated with a heat reflective coating to prevent the green house effect within the building.
The external skin of the walls on the lower floor are to be brushed clay. This is a sustainable material that also provides an interesting aesthetic and a more natural look to the building.

The ground floor is to be covered in red brick, to create an interesting aesthetic look while also creating a nod to the large amount of red brick in the local area, particularly the railway bridge on the site.
