SETTING THE SCENE The Texas State football team looks to win its sixth game overall and fourth Sun Belt Conference game when the Bobcats return home to host Arkansas State on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Bobcat Stadium. The game kicks off at 8:32 p.m. on ESPNU. Texas State enters the game with a 5-5 overall record and 3-3 SBC mark after dropping a pair of gut-wrenching decisions with a 24-20 loss at South Alabama on Nov. 15 and a 28-25 decision against Georgia Southern on Nov. 8. The Bobcats also look to even their home record to 3-3 overall and 2-2 against Sun Belt Conference teams.

Arkansas State enters Thursday’s game with a 6-4 record and a 4-2 mark in Sun Belt Conference games after winning two of its last three games. The Red Wolves won a 44-28 victory at Idaho and defeated South Alabama, 45-10, before dropping a 37-32 decision against Appalachian State last Saturday. The Red Wolves are 2-3 in road games this season with losses at Tennessee, Miami and UL Lafayette. The other win was at Georgia State.

MEDIA POLICIES FOR BOBCAT FOOTBALL WEEKLY PRESS LUNCHEON Head coach Dennis Franchione and selected Bobcat players meet with the media at Texas State’s weekly media luncheon each Tuesday preceding a game in the J. Garland Warren Room on the second level of Bobcat Stadium’s End Zone Complex. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. and followed by interviews.

ADDITIONAL INTERVIEWS In addition to Tuesday’s media luncheon, Texas State student-athletes and coach Franchione will be available for in-person or phone interviews after practice on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Requests should be directed to Rick Poulter.

All interview requests must be coordinated through the Texas State Sports Information Office with, hopefully, a 24-hour advance notice. Student-athlete’s phone numbers will not be given out. Coaches and student-athletes are not available for interviews the day before a game or on game day.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS The Texas State locker room is located inside the End Zone Complex at Bobcat Stadium. The visiting locker room is located in the North Side Complex.

Texas State head coach and requested players are available in the team meeting room approximately 10 minutes after each game. Texas State’s locker room is closed following each game and practice.

Texas State University is committed to a policy of equal access for both male and female reporters and photographers.

Visiting SID’s will establish media interview and locker room admittance policies for their respective teams.

PRACTICE COVERAGE Practices are open to members of the media, but Texas State does require media members to contact Rick Poulter if they plan to attend. A member of the SID staff is on hand at every practice to assist the media. There is access for photographers and videographers to shoot photographs and video during the first 50 minutes of practice.

All interview requests will be coordinated after practice is complete.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS Working media and photographer credentials for Texas State’s home games will be handled by assistant athletics director and sports information director Rick Poulter.

Requests should be made in writing by sports editors or sports directors of accredited media outlets on company letterhead. Requests should be made as early as possible and should be limited to working media only. Requests made within three days of the game may not be considered.

Credentials will be mailed to the requesting individual or organization if time permits or sent to the visiting school’s sports information director for distribution. Media parking at Bobcat Stadium is available on a limited basis in Lots 3 and 4 of the stadium and at Mill Street. Requests for parking passes should be made well in advance to the Sports Information Office.

TEXAS STATE PRESS BOX The Texas State Press Box, located on the fourth level of the Jerry D. and Linda Gregg Fields West Side Complex at Bobcat Stadium, opens three hours prior to each game. The working press box, coaches’ booths and radio/TV booths are located on the same level.

Media credentials are required for admittance to the press box and for meals.

Game notes and programs are provided prior to the game. Game statistics and quotes are provided during and after the game. The working press area has complimentary wireless internet access available. On game day, Texas State telecommunications representatives are on hand to assist media members.

SIDELINES Texas State follows guidelines set forth by the NCAA Public Relations Committee, the NCAA Football Rules Committee, the American Football Coaches Association and the National Press Photographers Association.

Photographers are not permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and must have credentials visible at all times. In an effort to ensure the best possible working conditions for media photographers, uniformed security personnel will be patrolling the sidelines. Anyone holding a media pass who is not actively involved in coverage of the game will be escorted from the sideline. Similar procedures will be in effect in the press box.

Texas State vs. Arkansas State Game Notes TEXAS STATE ON THE AIR Texas State’s football games are broadcast live on KOKE FM (105.3 FM) in Austin, KTSW (89.9 FM) in San Marcos and KLUP (930 AM) in San Antonio.

Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane call the action for each Bobcat Football game. Ben Campos (home games) and John McElfresh (away games) serve as sideline reporters. Each broadcast starts with a one-hour pregame show and is followed by a 15-minute postgame show.

COACH FRAN RADIO SHOW The Coach Fran Radio Show airs on 104.9 the Horn in Austin and San Marcos each Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The show also airs live on KLUP (930 AM) in San Antonio.

The show takes place at Bobcat Nation Sports Bar and Grill in San Marcos. Coach Franchione joins host Brant Freeman, along with selected assistant coaches and players as they preview each upcoming game throughout the 2014 season.

“ALL IN” BOBCAT FOOTBALL TV SHOW Texas State Athletics has teamed with Time Warner Cable Sports, Fox Sports Southwest and San Antonio’s CW 35 to highlight Texas State‘s football team each week on “All In at Texas State”.

The 30-minute show features head coach Dennis Franchione, hosts Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane, along with the Bobcat coaching staff and players. The show airs Thursday’s on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel at 6:00 p.m. It also will be shown on Fox Sports Southwest each Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., and each Saturday morning on CW 35 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

104.9 THE HORN RADIO SNAPSHOT On the drive home from work, fans can tune in every Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. to 104.9 FM in Austin/San Marcos to listen to Erin Hogan interview Coach Franchione, beginning August 27.

BOBCAT MINUTE Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, during “Afternoons with Bucky and Erin” on 104.9 the Horn, from 5:00-6:36 a 60-second spot will air, informing the public about all the news going on in the Texas State athletic department.

TEXAS STATE IN BOBCAT STADIUM Texas State looks to even its home record to 3-3 Thursday night against Arkansas State following a 28-25 loss against Georgia Southern on Nov. 8.

The Bobcats opened the season with a 65-0 victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and won a 35-30 victory against Idaho. Texas State’s three losses were against Georgia Southern, UL Lafayette, and Navy.

Texas State has a combined record of 13-10 in home games since 2011 and an all-time record of 112-81 in home games at Bobcat Stadium through its first five home games.

THREE OF TOP FIVE HOME CROWDS Texas State played in front of three of the top five home crowds in school history during the first three home games this season. Texas State had an attendance of 21,345 against Idaho after playing against Navy in front of the second-largest crowd in Bobcat Stadium history with an attendance of 32,007. The attendance for Texas State’s first game this season against Arkansas-Pine Bluff was 20,850.

The other three coaches are Frank Beamer (271), Steve Spurrier (224) and Brian Kelly (214). Kansas State’s Bill Snyder (184) is fifth on the list.

Franchione has led his teams to nine conference championships, the best SEC West Division record another year and 14 postseason bowls or playoffs. He has been named National Coach of the Year twice and Regional Coach of the Year six times.

Larry Blakeney, Troy 24 177 TEXAS STATE IN OVERTIME Texas State won its fourth overtime victory in school history with a 37-34 triple-overtime win at Tulsa on Sept. 27. It was the first overtime win for the Bobcats since they clinched a Southland Conference championship with a 45-42 win against Sam Houston State on Nov. 22, 2008.

The win at Tulsa was the first overtime game in which Texas State has played under Dennis Franchione and the first overtime game since the Bobcats played four overtime periods against Nicholls State on Oct. 16, 2010.

TEXAS STATE ON THE ROAD Texas State’s loss at South Alabama snapped a three-game road winning streak after the Bobcats had posted a 37-29 victory at New Mexico State. The winning streak began with a 37-34 triple overtime victory at Tulsa and followed by a 22-18 victory at UL Monroe before its win at New Mexico State. The other road loss this season was a 42-35 setback at Illinois on Sept. 20.

Texas State’s comeback win at ULM was its first Sun Belt Conference road win after joining the league in 2013.

The Bobcats enter their final game at Georgia State with a 3-2 record in road contests this season.

THREE ROAD WINS IN A SEASON Texas State’s three road victories this season mark the first time the Bobcats have won three road games since the 2009 when Texas State was 3-2 in road contests. The only other time Texas State had three road wins in a season since 2005 was in 2008 when the Bobcats posted a 5-2 record in road contests en route to their only Southland Conference outright championship.

STRONG DEFENSIVE EFFORTS Texas State is coming off two of its best defensive performances of the season against South Alabama and Georgia Southern. The Bobcats forced four turnovers at South Alabama, including three fumble recoveries, after entering the game with just two fumble recoveries in its first nine games.

The Bobcats also held Georgia Southern to a season-low 227 yards rushing and a season-low 268 total yards on offense.

Texas State vs. Arkansas State Game Notes SEVEN BOBCATS EARN MIDSEASON ALL-SUN BELT CONFERENCE HONORS Phil Steele Publications named seven Texas State players to its Midseason All-Sun Belt Conference team, including four First-Team selections.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones and senior offensive linemen Charlie Will Tuttle were named on the First-Team offense. Senior linebacker David Mayo was selected on the First-Team defense, while Craig Mager was named to the First-Team special teams as a punt returner.

Mager also joined Germod Williams on the Second Team defense as defensive backs. Senior tight end Bradley Miller was a Second-Team selection on offense.

EIGHT BOBCATS GARNER ALL-SBC HONORS The Sun Belt Conference announced that eight Texas State football players have been selected to the league’s preseason All-Sun Belt Conference teams by the SBC head coaches and a panel of selected media members.

Senior linebackers Michael Orakpo and David Mayo joined senior cornerback Craig Mager and senior place kicker Jason Dann as All-SBC FirstTeam selections. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones, junior running back Robert Lowe, junior offensive tackle Adrian Bellard and junior return specialist Brandon Smith were named to the All-SBC Second-Team.

MAYO ON PRESEASON LOMBARDI AWARD WATCH LIST Senior linebacker David Mayo is proving why he was named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Club of Houston’s Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. Mayo leads the nation with 14.1 tackles per game after recording a game-high 12 tackles at South Alabama, 17 tackles at New Mexico State and a career-high 22 tackles at UL Monroe. Mayo’s 22 tackles equal the highest single-game total by a NCAA FBS player this season. He also is the only NCAA FBS player and first Sun Belt Conference player to record 20 tackles in a game twice. He also had 20 tackles at Tulsa earlier this season. Mayo also has recorded 10 or more stops during nine of the first 10 games this season.

In addition to being named to the Lombardi Award preseason watch list, Mayo also was named 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection

by Lindy’s and Athlon and a Second-Team selection by Phil Steele after being named Honorable Mention All-SBC by league coaches and All-SBC Second-Team by Phil Steele and College Sports Madness in 2013.

LOWE NOMINATED FOR DOAK WALKER AWARD LIST Junior running back Robert Lowe was a preseason nomination for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back and ranks seventh in the Sun Belt Conference in rushing with 78.8 yards per game.

Lowe has rushed for over 100 yards twice this season and gained 90 yards for the second time at UL Monroe when he ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Lowe gained 117 yards on 26 carries at Illinois after running for 92 yards and a TD on 16 carries against Navy and rushing for 150 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

His 150 yards against UAPB is his secondhighest yardage total in a single game. He entered this season as the top returning rushing leader in the Sun Belt Conference after running for 945 yards and nine touchdowns on 164 carries in 2013.

BRADLEY MILLER NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Bradley Miller has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Miller is one of 42 FBS tight ends and one of three tight ends from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

He caught a career-best eight passes for a career-best 112 yards to lead the Bobcats at Tulsa.

One of his receptions helped preserve a scoring drive in the first overtime period and another set up the winning score.

Miller caught six passes for 59 yards against Georgia Southern, four passes for 43 yards at Illinois after leading the Bobcats with seven catches for 62 yards against Navy.

He enters the Arkansas State game leading the Bobcats with 39 receptions for 401 yards and a touchdown. Last season, Miller caught 24 passes for 311 yards last year. He also was named a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Third-Team selection by Phil Steele.

SMITH AND GAINES NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST A pair of Texas State kickoff return specialists, Brandon Smith and Jafus Gaines, has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season.

Smith had 22-yard return against Georgia Southern after a 21-yard return at UL Monroe and two returns for 36 yards against UL Lafayette. He also registered a 29-yard return against Idaho and a 25-yard return at Tulsa after returning three kickoffs for 79 yards at Illinois. He also recorded three returns for 45 yards against Navy and another kickoff for 25 yards against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Last season, Smith became one of 13 players in NCAA history to return two kickoffs for a touchdown in a single game when he recorded returns of 100 and 92 yards for touchdowns in Texas State’s first Sun Belt Conference game at UL Lafayette.

He ranked fifth nationally in kickoff returns overall after averaging 29.9 yards on 20 returns last season. His two touchdowns also set school records for most TDs scored on a kickoff return in a game, season and career.

Gaines recorded a 14-yard return at UL Monroe for his first of the season. Two years ago, Gaines ranked eighth nationally and led the WAC

in kickoff returns after averaging 28.9 yards on 28 returns. He had career-best 65-yard returns against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech that season.

The CFPA is in its seventh season of recognition. The CFPA’s player and team performance index ranks success in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.

DANN NAMED TO CFPA PRESEASON WATCH LIST Texas State senior kicker Jason Dann has been named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list heading into the 2014 season. Dann is one of 40 FBS kickers and one of three kickers from the Sun Belt Conference named to the list.

Phil Steele and Athlon named him a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team kicker. He opened this season making a 31-yard field goal and eight of his nine extra-point tries against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and three extra points against Navy.

He took over Texas State’s field goal kicking duties in 2013 and finished the final eight games making nine of his 10 attempts, including all five tries from inside 40 yards. He had a season-long 43-yard field goal against both UL Monroe and South Alabama, and kicked a 42-yard field goal at Idaho.

ORAKPO NAMED TO BUTKUS AWARD WATCH LIST After beginning the season on the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, senior linebacker Michael Orakpo was lost for the season when he suffered a knee injury against Navy. Orakpo was the only player from the Sun Belt Conference named to the preseason watch list. The Butkus Award is given to the nation’s top linebacker. Orakpo also was named a 2014 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team selection by Phil Steele, Lindy’s, Athlon, USA Today and Sporting News preseason magazines after being named Honorable Mention All-SBC by league coaches and All-SBC SecondTeam by Phil Steele in 2013.

He picked right where he left off last season when he recorded his first sack of the season and a quarterback hurry against Arkansas-Pine Bluff after ranking seventh among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 4.5 sacks. He also had four tackles, including one solo stop, against the Lions. Orakpo had one tackle against Navy in the first quarter before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

Texas State vs. Arkansas State Game Notes OFFENSIVE TEAM NOTES 300 YARDS PASSING

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Jones became the first Texas State quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in two consecutive games since Bradley George accomplished the feat in 2009. Jones completed 25 of 43 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown at South Alabama after connecting on 30 of 51 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns against Georgia Southern.

Overall, he has thrown for 300 yards in three games this year. Jones also completed 29 of 43 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns at Illinois.

His 336 passing yards against the Illini were the most by a Texas State QB since Bradley George threw for 337 yards against Southeastern Louisiana on Oct. 10, 2009.

COMPLETING 70 PERCENT OF HIS PASSES

Tyler Jones has completed 70 percent of his passes in two games this season and ranks 21st nationally and second among Sun Belt Conference quarterbacks in completion percentage with 64.0. Jones also is 48th nationally and third in the Sun Belt with an efficiency rating of 135.8.

Jones completed 14 of his 20 passes at UL Monroe for 141 yards and a touchdown and opened the season connecting on 21 of 25 passes for 278 yards and four TDs against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He threw a season-best 71-yard pass to Jafus Gaines against the Lions.

Tyler Jones has thrown 18 touchdown passes this season and that ties him for fifth place on Texas State’s single season charts. He needs four more to pass Barrick Neely for third place.

Jones also ranks seventh among Texas State’s top career leaders with 26 touchdown passes. He needs two more TD passes to move past Shaun Rutherford for sixth place.

Jones also moved up to sixth place on Texas State’s list for most yards passing in a season with 2,211 yards. He needs to pass for 179 more yards to move past Williams for fifth place on that list as well.

LOWE AMONG RUSHING LEADERS Individually, Robert Lowe ranks seventh among SBC rushing leaders with 78.8 yards per game. He has rushed for 709 yards and eight touchdowns on 136 carries this season. He averages 5.2 yards per carry and that ranks 57th nationally and is the seventh best average in the league.

Lowe has run for six touchdowns in Texas State’s last four games after rushing for 76 yards and a TD on 16 carries at South Alabama, 39 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries against Georgia Southern, 65 yards and two TDs on 16 carries at New Mexico State and 91 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries at UL Monroe.

Lowe has run for over 100 yards twice and 90 yards two more times this season. He compiled 91 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries at UL Monroe after running for 117 yards on 26 carries at Illinois, 92 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries against Navy and a season-best 150 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts against ArkansasPine Bluff.

FRANKS AMONG RUSHING LEADERS Terrence Franks ranks 11th among league leaders with 59.5 yards per game this season after rushing for 595 yards and seven touchdowns on 94 carries this season.

He averages 6.3 yards per carry to rank second among team leaders behind C.J. Best’s 9.5 yards per carry.

Best has gained 257 yards and scored a TD on 27 carries this season.

Franks scored two touchdowns at New Mexico State with a 14-yard TD run and a 10-yard blocked punt return after he blocked the punt. He enters the Arkansas State game having scored 11 touchdowns overall to rank fifth among Sun Belt Conference scoring leaders with 7.3 points per game. He has seven touchdown runs, three touchdown receptions and the blocked punt return.

FRANKS NAMED SUN BELT CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior running back Terrence Franks was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week and College Football Performance Awards’ National Running Back of the Week after running for a national-leading and career-best 284 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries against Idaho. It was the fourth-highest yardage total in school history and the sixth-highest total by a Sun Belt Conference player. Franks had touchdown runs of 95, 70 and 70 yards in the game.

His 95-yard TD run is the longest in school history and the second-longest run in Sun Belt Conference history.

TIGHT END COMBINATION Texas State’s tight end trio of Bradley Miller, Ryan Carden and Lawrence White have a combined for 58 catches, 702 yards and five touchdowns this season. Miller leads the Bobcats with 39 catches for 401 yards and a TD after recording five receptions for 57 yards at South Alabama. He also caught six passes for 59 yards against Georgia Southern and had a career-best eight catches for 112 yards at Tulsa.

Carden has caught 11 passes for 160 yards and a TD, including four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in Texas State’s last two games. He caught a 32-yard TD pass against Georgia Southern before catching three passes for 37 yards at South Alabama.

White had eight catches for 141 yards and three touchdowns after catching a career-best 46-yard touch-

down pass at South Alabama. He also caught a 32-yard TD pass against Georgia Southern and a 23-yard TD pass at New Mexico State. White began the season with three receptions for 35 yards against Arkansas-Pine Bluff before catching four passes for 56 yards at Illinois.

In addition, David Lewis has four receptions for 37 yards after catching three passes for 30 yards at Tulsa.

SMITH BOUNCING BACK Junior wide receiver Brandon Smith caught five passes for 86 yards at South Alabama after leading the Bobcats with eight receptions for 97 yards against Georgia Southern. Smith leads Texas State’s wide receivers with 28 catches for 318 yards this season. He also had four catches for 39 yards and touchdown at Illinois and four catches for 24 yards against Navy.

JAFUS MAKING HUGE “GAINES” Junior wide receiver Jafus Gaines leads Texas State wide receivers with four touchdown receptions despite missing the last two games. Gaines caught seven passes for 55 yards at New Mexico State and opened the season with four catches for a career-bests of 119 yards and two touchdowns against UAPB. His 71-yard reception against the Lions is the longest by a Bobcat this season. He also recorded four catches for 55 yards against Navy.

IJAH AMONG TEAM LEADERS Senior wide receiver Ben Ijah has recorded 25 catches to rank third among Bobcat wide receivers after he recorded two catches for 15 yards at South Alabama and three catches for 32 yards against Georgia Southern. Ijah has three touchdown receptions this season and recorded career-bests of five receptions and two touchdowns at Illinois.

EXPERIENCED OFFENSIVE LINE Texas State’s offensive line also has a combined 135 starts entering the Arkansas State game.

Senior guard Charlie Will Tuttle leads the offensive linemen with 39 career starts. Matt Freeman has started 23 games at center, while Adrian Bellard has 22 consecutive starts at offensive tackle. Ryan Melton has 16 starts, and Felix Romero made his seventh start of the season and 19th of his career at South Alabama. Brandon Sarabia started the first three games at guard for the Bobcats this season.

Other experienced reserves include Collin Fissell, who made his 11th start at South Alabama, Zach Crawford with six starts and Jack Costello with three starts.

Thompson also served as interim head coach each of the last two years when he led Arkansas State to victories over No. 25 Kent State and Ball State in the 2013 and 2014 GoDaddy Bowls.

PRESSURE COOKER John Thompson is known for his multiple defenses and blitz packages. In its first season under Thompson, Texas State ranks 40th nationally and fourth in the Sun Belt Conference with 2.5 sacks per game.

Texas State’s three sacks against UL Lafayette marked the fourth time the Bobcats have recorded three or more sacks in a game this season. The Bobcats also had a season-best nine sacks against Idaho, four sacks at Tulsa and three sacks against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Texas State had one sack at South Alabama.

MAGER INTERCEPTS PASS AGAINST AGGIES Craig Mager just missed collecting his third interception at South Alabama after it was overturned on replay.

Mager picked off his second pass at New Mexico State after recording an interception at Tulsa.

He was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded career-bests of 12 tackles, three tackle for losses of 20 yards and two sacks against Idaho. Mager also had a game-high two pass breakups against the Vandals.

Mager enters the Arkansas State game ranked fifth among team leaders with 51 tackles with six tackles against New Mexico State, UL Lafayette, Tulsa and Navy

FORCING TURNOVERS Texas State forced a season-best four turnovers at South Alabama and enter the Arkansas State game having forced 15 turnovers this season. The Bobcats had three fumble recoveries against the Jaguars after entering the game with just two fumble recoveries in the first nine games. The Bobcats also intercepted a pass at South Alabama to mark Texas State’s 10th interception this season.

POSTING A SHUTOUT Texas State fielded a shutout for the first time since 2005 on Aug. 30 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

It is the first time the Bobcats have shut out an opponent since Sept. 10, 2005 when the Bobcats defeated Southern Utah, 34-0.

MAYO LEADS THE NATION David Mayo enters the Arkansas game leading the nation in tackles after averaging 14.1 tackles in the first nine games after collecting 12 tackles at South Alabama.

It marks the ninth time in 10 games that Mayo has logged 10 or more tackles.

Mayo was named a Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season after recording a career-high and national single-game best of 22 tackles and a quarterback sack at UL Monroe. His 22 tackles are the third-highest total in league history and Mayo became the only FBS player this season and first Sun Belt Conference player in league history to record 20 or more

ODIARI ON THE FRONT LINE Senior defensive end Michael Odiari enters the Arkansas State game ranked third among team leaders with 66 tackles after logging 40 tackles in the last five games .Odiari had six tackles at South Alabama, seven tackles against Georgia Southern, nine stops at New Mexico State, eight at UL Monroe and 10 versus UL Lafayette. Earlier this year, Odiari also had a career-best 13 tackles at Tulsa.

Odiari ranks 14th nationally and is second in the Sun Belt Conference with 8.0 sacks after assisting on a sack at South Alabama and collecting one at UL Monroe and UL Lafayette.. He also is fourth among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 12.0 tackle for losses this season after collecting 1.5 at South Alabama.

He was named the College Football Performance Awards’ Honorable Mention Defensive Lineman of the Week after recording a career-best 4.5 sacks and 4.5 tackle for losses of 22 yards against Idaho.

WILLIAMS IN THE INTERCEPTION COLUMN Germod Williams enters the Arkansas State game ranked second in the Sun Belt and 20th nationally with four interceptions this season. Williams became the first Bobcat to record multiple interceptions in a game when he intercepted two passes against Idaho. He also had an interception against Navy and had his longest return after taking an interception back 22 yards at New Mexico State.

Williams has 35 tackles this season, including a career-best nine stops against UL Lafayette.

MCGOWAN STEPS IN AT LINEBACKER Trey McGowan is ranked second among team leaders and 11th among Sun Belt Conference leaders with 68 tackles this season after leading the Bobcats in each of the last two games with 12 stops at South Alabama and eight tackles against Georgia Southern. McGowen has totaled 49 tackles in the last four games after logging a career-best of 17 tackles at UL Monroe and 12 stops at New Mexico State.

He tallied nine tackles in his first against Navy.

TARGUN AMONG TEAM TACKLING LEADERS Senior safety Colby Targun enters the Arkansas State game in fourth place among team leaders with 56 tackles this season after recording 21 tackles in the last four games. Targun tallied nine tackles at UL Monroe, six at New Mexico State, three versus Georgia Southern and South Alabama. He had a career-high of 13 tackles against Idaho.

Targun also had seven tackles at Tulsa and five stops versus both Illinois and Navy.

In addition, he returned an interception 48 yards at Illinois to set up Texas State’s final touchdown. It was the longest return of his career and his third career interception.

MIMS RECORDS THIRD INTERCEPTION Junior cornerback David Mims recorded his third interception of the season at South Alabama and returned it a career-best 46 yards. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards against UL Lafayette and had an interception against UL Monroe.

Mims also recorded his career-best of 11 tackles at New Mexico State.

MCCLARTY STEPPING UP Sophomore nose tackle Dallas McClarty registered a season-best of seven tackles at South Alabama and enters Thursday night’s game against Arkansas State with 34 tackles this season. McClarty has recorded 29 of his 34 tackles during the last seven games. McClarty tallied five tackles against Tulsa and Idaho, four tackles versus UL Lafayette and New Mexico State, three stops at Illinois and two tackles against Georgia Southern and UL Monroe.

He also ranks second on the team in tackle for losses and sacks with 7.0 tackle for losses of 28 yards and three sacks. He had a career-best of two tackle for losses at New Mexico State after recording a tackle for loss in five other games, including at South Alabama.

Texas State vs. Arkansas State Game Notes SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES FRANKS NAMED SUN BELT CONFERENCE SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Terrence Franks was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after he provided a game-turning play on special teams at New Mexico State when he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdowns in Texas State’s 37-29 victory against the Aggies. It marks the first time a Bobcat has blocked a punt since current Atlanta Falcon Joplo Bartu blocked a punt against Nicholls State in 2011. His touchdown return marked the first time the Bobcats scored a touchdown off a blocked punt since Morris Brothers scored a TD against Panhandle State in 2005.

In addition to his blocked punt, Franks also returned kickoffs during the last three games. He has eight returns for 146 yards after returning three for 57 yards at South Alabama.

NO PUNTS IN A GAME Texas State didn’t punt the football against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and that is the first game with no punts for the Bobcats since they played at SMU on Sept. 6, 2008.

AMONG TOP SBC PUNT RETURN LEADERS The Bobcats rank second in the Sun Belt Conference and 17th nationally in punt returns with a 12.6 average on 12 punt returns this season after Craig Mager returned two punts for 11 yards against Georgia Southern.

Mager also had a five-yard return at UL Monroe and a seven-yard return against UL Lafayette. In addition, he returned two punts for 50 yards against Idaho.

Overall, Mager has nine punt returns for 116 yards this season. He had a season-long 43-yard return against Idaho and had a 35-yard return against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

SMITH RETURNS KICKOFFS Brandon Smith recorded a 22-yard kickoff return against Georgia Southern. He leads the Bobcats with 13 returns for 218 yards this season. Smith had three returns for 79 yards at Illinois, including a season-best 34-yard return against the Fighting Illini.

JOHNSON TAKES OVER KICKING DUTIES Senior Will Johnson took over Texas State’s field goal and extra-point kicking duties during the last seven games after beginning the season kicking off and serving as the team’s punter.

Johnson has made six of his 10 field goals attempts this season after making a pair of field goals at South Alabama. His first field goal came from 49 yards at Tulsa and he also kicked a field goal against UL Lafayette, New Mexico State and Georgia Southern.

His 49-yard field goal at Tulsa is Texas State’s longest field goal since Johnson kicked a career-best 54-yard field goal against New Mexico State in 2012. He has kicked three field goals beyond 50 yards during his career. He also kicked field goals from 53 yards against Tarleton State and 52 yards versus Stephen F. Austin in 2011.

Johnson had a career-long 70-yard punt and four punts over 50 yards at Illinois. He also logged a 53-yard punt that was downed at Navy’s one-yard line by the Bobcats. He had 58, 55 and 53-yard punts against UL Lafayette.

Johnson is averaging 63.1 yards on 52 kickoffs this season with 31 overall resulting in touchbacks.

DENNIS FRANCHIONE

Head Coach 29th Season as Head Coach Sixth Season as a coach at Texas State Pittsburg State, 1973 A proven winner who has led Texas State’s transition to the NCAA Division I FBS ranks, Dennis Franchione is in the fourth season of his second term and sixth season overall as the Bobcats’ head coach.

Last season, Texas State became bowl eligible in just its second season of playing in the FBS and first season in the Sun Belt Conference, which finished the season as the toughest non-automatic qualifying conference in the nation. It also equaled the shortest time in which a school became bowl eligible in the FBS since Marshall in 1996.

Franchione is in his 29th season as a head coach and is one of four active head coaches with over 200 wins after reaching that plateau in 2013. He enters the Arkansas State game with a 208-126-2 career record, including a 34-34 mark as head coach at Texas State.

Prior to his return to Texas State, Franchione led his teams to nine conference championships and had the best divisional record during one season. In addition, his teams played in nine bowl games, four NAIA playoff games and one NCAA Division II playoff contest.

His collegiate head-coaching career began at Southwestern College in 1981, when he compiled a 14-4-2 record in two seasons. In 1982, the Builders won nine games, a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and beat Oklahoma Panhandle State 15-0 in the Sunflower Bowl.

It was Southwestern College’s first bowl game and the nine victories tied the school’s single-season record that was previously set in 1967. Following the record-setting season, Franchione went to Tennessee Tech, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 1983 and 1984 before being named head coach at his alma mater, Pittsburg State.

During the next five seasons, he led the Gorillas to a 53-6 record and four Central States Intercollegiate Conference championships and one Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with a combined record of 37-1. He was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year twice. His teams tied the school record with 11 victories in a season three times before breaking it with a 12-win campaign in 1989 when Pittsburg State joined the NCAA Division II ranks.

In 1990, Franchione took the reins of Texas State’s football program for the first time. He led the Bobcats to a 6-5 record in his first year, and that was Texas State’s first winning record as a member of the Southland Conference, the first winning season as a Division I FCS member and first winning season since 1984.

The following year, Franchione led the Bobcats to their second straight winning season, a feat that was not duplicated until Texas State had back-to-back winning seasons in 2008 and 2009.

After compiling a 13-9 record at Texas State during those two years, Franchione joined the FBS head coaching ranks for the first time when he took over New Mexico’s program.

Before his arrival, New Mexico had won just 26 of its previous 106 games.

During his six seasons with the Lobos, Franchione compiled an overall 33-36 record and had three winning seasons. He led the Lobos to their first winning record in 11 years with a 6-5 record in 1993. Franchione also guided New Mexico to its first back-to-back winning campaigns since 1971 when the Lobos posted a 6-5 record in 1996 and a 9-4 mark in 1997. The 1997 New Mexico team won the Western Athletic Conference’s Mountain Division with a 7-1 league record and played in the Insight.com Bowl in 1997. It was the school’s first bowl game since 1961. While he was at New Mexico, Franchione recruited and coached future NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher during his freshman and sophomore seasons

in 1996 and 1997. Urlacher recorded over 102 tackles to rank second on the team in 1997.

Franchione also produced Third-Team All-American receiver Pascal Volz and a pair of WAC Offensive Players of the Year in quarterbacks Stoney Case (1994) and Graham Leigh (1997) while he was at New Mexico.

Following the Insight Bowl, Franchione moved to TCU in 1998 and quickly turned around the fortunes of the school’s football program.

Before his arrival, the Horned Frogs had finished the previous season with a 1-10 record. In his first year at the helm, Franchione led them to a 7-5 mark and a 28-19 victory over USC in the Sun Bowl. The Horned Frogs scored a schoolrecord six defensive touchdowns, intercepted 12 passes and held opponents to an average of 19.6 points per game – the lowest average in over 30 years. His offense featured running back Basil Mitchell, who gained 1,111 yards and scored six touchdowns. Mitchell rushed for 185 yards and two touchdowns in the 28-19 win over USC. The next season, Franchione also led TCU to the inaugural Mobile Alabama Bowl when LaDainian Tomlinson burst onto the national scene by leading the nation in rushing with 1,850 yards and 18 touchdowns on 268 carries. The Horned Frogs posted two shutouts and led the Western Athletic Conference in every major defensive category. TCU won the WAC championship and upset No. 20 East Carolina 28-14 in the bowl game as Tomlinson ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. In 2000, Tomlinson was a Doak Walker Award winner and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Football News National Offensive Player of the Year and an unanimous All-American after running for 2,158 yards, the fourth-highest single season total in NCAA history. He also scored 22 touchdowns as TCU finished the season with a 10-1 record, a WAC championship and a second-straight berth to the Mobile Alabama Bowl. Defensively, the Horned Frogs allowed only 245.0 total yards and 9.6 points per game, ranking first in the nation in both categories.

Following the 2000 campaign, Franchione was named the head coach at Alabama after the Crimson Tide finished the previous season with a 3-8 record.

In his first season, he led the Tide to a 7-5 record and a 14-13 victory over Iowa State in the Independence Bowl, giving Alabama its first bowl victory in five years.

In 2002, he led the Crimson Tide to a 10-3 mark and placed first in the SEC West Division with a 6-2 league record. However, previous NCAA sanctions made Alabama ineligible to play in a bowl game and the SEC Championship Game. Following Alabama’s victory over Hawaii at the end of the regular season, Franchione returned to the State of Texas when he was named head coach at Texas A&M. During the next five seasons, his Aggies posted three winning records and played in three bowl games. Texas A&M finished the 2004 season with a 7-5 mark and played in the Cotton Bowl, the Aggies’ first bowl game in three seasons. His best season at the school came in 2006 when the Aggies won nine games and played in the Holiday Bowl. The next year, Texas A&M posted a 7-5 record and qualified to play in the Alamo Bowl. However, Franchione resigned as head coach prior to the bowl game and ended his tenure at the school with a 32-28 record.

His recruiting classes were ranked among the Top 13 nationally from 2003-05.

Franchione also worked in broadcasting for three years prior to his return to coaching at Texas State, including two seasons as an analyst for ESPN Radio in 2008 and 2009.

Born March 28, 1951 in Girard, Kan., he is a graduate of Pittsburgh State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and received an Alumni Meritorious Achievement Award. He and his wife, Kim, have two daughters, Ashley and Libby. He also has a son, Brad. Brad and his wife, Rebecca, have two sons Wyatt and Gunnar and a daughter, Isabella. Franchione and Kim also formed the Coach Fran Charities, a nonprofit organization assists children with special needs and other charitable causes.
