Dates to Remember

Dear Graduate Students, The College of Applied Arts is very proud of the faculty and graduate programs. It takes a team effort to promote growth and achievement. Faculty, staff and graduate students have made incredible strides in their academic outcomes. The graduate programs continue to improve as the scholarly productivity of the faculty and external funding increases. We continue to promote access to higher education opportunities. In the fall of 2009, we will again offer 50 $1,000 one time, Dean’s Graduate Student Scholarships (DGSS) to new graduate students enrolled in six hours. In addition, we are implementing a CAA Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) to support students and assist faculty with the ongoing research projects in various departments. With respect to growth, the graduate enrollment headcount has increased significantly resulting in a 29.3% increase in Graduate Student enrollment from 168 in Fall 2007 to 243 in Fall 2008. A graduate program in Human Nutrition was initiated in the fall and the Doctoral program in CJ is currently under review. We encourage undergraduates to strive for academic excellence so that they can solicit opportunities in graduate school. Our departments continue to foster a scholarly atmosphere in their respective programs. We provide a faculty friendly atmosphere where students get to know their professors and engage in academic dialogue. This atmosphere builds tomorrows academic leaders.

Graduate Student Research Implementation of Intensive Weight Management Intervention Program for Army ROTC Cadets Dr. BJ Friedman and Ms. Arisa Cardenas, RD, with assistance from Dr. Sylvia Crixell, and graduate students Julia Von Bank and Jennifer Stepter, are currently conducting a controlled study that implements and evaluates a comprehensive weight management program for Army ROTC cadets at Texas State University. The study is funded by a Texas State Research Enhancement Program grant and uses evidence based strategies to improve diet, exercise, and health behaviors. The junior-class cadets were randomly selected to be part of either a control or treatment group. The treatment group will receive individualized dietary and behavior counseling, and have physical activity monitored over a 5month period. At the end of the study, the researchers hypothesize that cadets in the treatment group will meet body fat and weight requirements needed to participate in the Army’s Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). LDAC is a summer course to evaluate and train all Army ROTC cadets and can affect the cadet’s future role in the U.S. Army. This pilot study will provide data to develop an ROTC program that can be implemented on other campuses.

Department of Criminal Justice (Continued) Criminal Justice Memorial Scholarships The Criminal Justice Department at Texas State University sponsors five memorial scholarships that are open to all students majoring in Criminal Justice. Four of these memorial scholarships are named after former Texas State University students who have been killed in the line of duty as law enforcement officers and the fifth is named after a former member of the Criminal Justice Faculty. Steve Willis was a 1987 graduate of Southwest Texas State University and became an agent for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Unit (ATF). Steve was killed in 1993 on the first day of the Branch Davidian Incident by hostile gunfire as a Federal search and arrest warrant was being served. Keith Ruiz was also a 1987 graduate. He immediately joined the Travis County Sheriff Office and worked his way into a position with the SWAT team. He was killed in February of 2001 while serving a search and arrest warrant for illegal drugs. Kurt Knapp graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1999. Upon graduation he joined the Texas Department of Public Safety. In 2001 he was serving as a member of a DWI task force in Gillespie County when he was killed in a traffic accident as he apprehended an offender. Patrick Metzler graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1993 and immediately joined the Dallas Police Department. In October of 2003 Patrick was directing traffic around a highway-resurfacing project when a drunk driver disregarded the warning lights and barricades and rammed Patrick’s marked patrol car. Patrick was standing next to the patrol car at the time and was killed immediately from the resulting gasoline explosion. Paul Blaney retired from the Chicago Police Department and joined the faculty in the early 1980s. Upon his death a portion of his estate went to establish a scholarship in his memory. Funds to honor former students Stephen Geigel (Southwest Texas State University class of 1993) and Yari Mokri (Texas State University class of 2005) have been initiated and will be designated as memorial scholarships once the respective endowments have grown to a financial position where memorial scholarships can be permanently awarded based on the annual interest. The current recession in the economy and the resulting low stock market indices will prevent us from granting any awards for the 2009-2010 school year. Accordingly, individuals or groups who wish to make a tax-deductible contribution to any of these scholarships can send checks directly to the Texas State University Donor Relations Office (480 JCK). Donors should specify the specific scholarship in the memo section of any check.
