Hello Pioneers, Hope that your summer has been all that you’ve wanted it to be. Here at TWU we are in awe of watching the Bell Avenue pedestrian bridge dismantled and the repaving of Bell Avenue. In the residence halls we are making the following improvements to your home: zz Renovating the last floors in Guinn Hall zz Wi Fi access points in Stark and Lowry-Woods for better connectivity zz Refresh of married/family housing included new carpeting.

We have also been knee-deep in plans for our new residence halls which will open in Fall 2019.

Opening of the residence halls begin on August 23 and scheduled openings end Friday, August 25. Residents must claim their room by Sunday, August 27 or risk losing their space. If your plans have changed and you no longer wish to live on campus, please contact us immediately so we can provide another student housing.

This summer we have adopted a new sign in policy – TWU guests only need to show their ID as they are escorted into the halls. No actual sign in for TWU students. All other guests must show ID and sign in at the desk. We hope this student supported change will make your life a little easier.

It is hard to believe that it is only a few short weeks before campus is bustling again. Enjoy these last few weeks so that you’ll be ready for a fabulous new school year!

Students may rent a mailbox on a 6-12 month basis by going to the post office located at 101 E McKinney St. Denton, TX (940) 387-8555. Mail is not delivered to individual residence halls. Moving to Campus Parking on Campus

When you Arrive

On August 23 and 24, there will be unloading zones near the entrance to your building (Guinn, Stark, and Jones).

These spaces can only be used to unload. After unloading, staff and volunteers will direct you to a designated parking facility. There is ample parking for students moving into Lowry Woods, Vitae, and Select Apartments

Remember to bring your TWU ID card and/or driver’s license. Only the student must be present to check-in. To avoid crowding the check-in area, please have family members wait outside (weather permitting) while you complete the check-in process.

Guinn and Stark Halls: We have partnered with University and Student Services (USS) to provide a full-service Movein experience for all students living with us in Guinn and Stark halls. Students who move into the residence halls on their scheduled day will arrive at either Stark or Guinn for a drive-through check in at their designated time. Yes, that means you don’t even have to leave your car.

Please follow all parking signs and inquire with staff and volunteers for additional assistance.

Please do not bring a trailer or oversized vehicle. This will not fit in our parking lots, and you will be directed to park off campus.

Once at the residence halls, University and Student Services will unload your vehicle and move all of your items into your room for you. After they have unloaded your vehicle(s), you will be directed to parking. After you park, you may go back to your residence hall where you will get your key and start unpacking.

Quick Tip: It may take several hours for your belongings to get to your room. Preparation and patience is key. Please Refer to the move-in times in the housing website.

First Floor Meetings First floor meetings will be held on Sunday, August 27 at 7:00 pm. Please see your Resident Assistant or Resident Director for more details.

Bed and Loft Bed Set-Up The residence halls and some of the apartments come furnished with these type of beds. These beds allow you to adjust the height so you can save as much space as you can. Residents whose beds are not lofted (and are able to be lofted) should submit a request to Tonya Gilbeaux (tgilbeaux@twu.edu). We will make every attempt to have all requested beds lofted by the assigned move-in time. Request after opening can be submitted to the front desk of your hall/community.

Bunked: A great set-up for space-saver, allowing for maximum use of room space

Captain: A medium position allowing for additional storage without use of a ladder

My Community Your Roommate

Housing Staff

We encourage you to call or email your new roommate. Getting in touch will give you a chance to get to know each other. Once you move into your residence hall or apartment, you will complete a roommate agreement with your roommate. Below are a few tips to help you along the way. zz

Residence Director (RD) RDs are staff members who live in every residence hall/ apartment complex. Your RD can provide you with individual counseling, support with roommate conflicts and conduct issues, and referrals to other University services.

Start the conversation ASAP. The sooner you can begin the relationship the better. Right before school, schedule a get-to-know-you discussion and begin to establish boundaries. If possible, do this in person. Even if you selected your own roommate and already know them well, this is a necessary step. Knowing someone well and living with them are two very different things.

Residence Assistant (RA) RAs are experienced students who live in the residence halls/ apartment complexes and are a resource to residents. Your RA will help you throughout the year by planning community events, addressing roommate conflicts, and answering any general questions you may have.

Discuss and agree on your expectations-Does your roommate know you hit the snooze button a lot before waking up? That you’re a neat freak? That you need some time to yourself before talking to anyone after you wake up?

Communicating what you need is one of the best ways to eliminate problems before they become problems.

Discuss your lifestyle and preferred study styles-If your roommate’s habits, personality, or schedule are very different from yours, it can be hard to adjust to living together.

Discuss with your roommate how comfortable you are with guests/visitors.

zz

Decide who will bring what for the room, or set a time to discuss.

Peer Advisor (PA) The scope of their position is to aid students in developing academic goals, providing referrals to offices on campus and developing successful ways to manage their academic course-load.

Green Room Certification Program Are you eco-friendly? Is “going green” a priority? If yes, the Green Room Certification Program (GRCP) is for you! By certifying your room or apartment as green, you are actively creating a brighter future for the campus and the world. As a thank you for your sustainable-minded decisions, certified students receive a certificate to hang on their door and ecofriendly prizes. The GRCP is open to all TWU students currently living on campus.

Living harmoniously with someone requires communicating, compromising and respecting differences. If you behave politely to your roommate, your roommate is likely to follow your lead.

When roommates have difficulty with one another, we first suggest they talk about the conflict causing issue. When roommates are unable to resolve a situation on their own, a Resident Assistant (RA) is called upon to help. In mediation, an objective person, usually the RA, acts as an intermediary to ensure that strong feelings do not hinder the process and that both sides are represented fairly.

Keeping it Safe Safety Tips

Safe Program Safes are now available for students living in the residence halls and apartments during the 2017-18 school year.

Lock your doors at all times. Double check the door to ensure it is locked.

TWU safes offer durable protection to keep your treasured items secured at all times. The safes are perfect for electronics, spare cash, important documents, and anything else that needs to be stored securely.

Always use your peephole before opening your door to visitors, even when you are expecting someone.

Never prop open any exterior doors.

Use lockable furniture for important items such as computers, tablets, documents, and other items.

Insure your Belongings

We highly encourage our residents to carry appropriate insurance to cover personal belongings brought to campus. This may be done as a rider to a current homeowner’s policy or by purchasing separate insurance.

Campus Life Residence Life Handbook

Campus Carry

The Residence Life Handbook is designed as an introduction and guide for all residential students at Texas Woman’s University, and is considered an extension of your housing contract. If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions about the policies, activities and/or services offered by University Housing, please contact any member of our staff or stop by our office on the 3rd floor in Jones Hall. A quick glimpse of some policies are as followed: zz

Alcohol Policy: This policy allows alcoholic beverages to be possessed and consumed by individuals of lawful age (21 and over) in specific areas under specific guidelines.

zz

Drug Policy: It is the policy of Texas Woman’s University that the use of illegal drugs is prohibited on Texas Woman’s University property. Such use of drugs by TWU students is subject to the penalties set out in the Student Handbook, which may include eviction from campus housing, disciplinary suspension from attendance, or expulsion at TWU.

zz

Under the Campus Carry law, TWU has established reasonable rules, regulations or other provisions regarding the carry of concealed handguns by license holders on its campuses.

Under the law, TWU may not create provisions that generally prohibit license holders from carrying concealed handguns on TWU campuses.

In keeping with the law, TWU consulted with students, staff and faculty regarding special considerations for the student populations on each campus, to develop the most appropriate and fair rules under the new law.

Continuing education concerning rules, regulations and policy will be an ongoing commitment.

Who may carry a gun on campus?

Any individual who holds a current and valid Texas License to Carry (LTC) may carry a concealed handgun where permitted.

Will guns be allowed in the residence halls or other residential facilities?

Yes, those who hold a current and valid LTC may carry in the residential facilities.

Will guns be allowed in classrooms or at sporting events?

TWU has established zones on campus where guns will not be permitted for reasons of campus safety. Guns may be carried in the classroom where permitted according to their valid LTC. All sporting events are “gun free” zones.

Guest Policy: The Guest Policy provides assigned residents with the opportunity to host in their residence hall rooms or apartments. A maximum of two guests per resident can be checked in at any time. No more than six people can be in a room at any time, including assigned residents. Guests must be escorted at all times by their hosts.

Will guns be allowed during disciplinary hearings?

Disciplinary hearings have been designated as “gun free” zones.

Frequently Asked Questions Where do I go on Move-in Day?

How do I move my belongings?

Go directly to the building/Residence Hall you were assigned.

Signage and volunteers will be placed all over campus to direct you. Hall staff will also be at your building to welcome you.

Students living in Guinn and Stark will be moved by USS Moving Company. Movers will unload their items and take them to their rooms.

Students living in Jones will have volunteers available to assist them.

Can I bring my Bicycle?

Yes. If students bring bicycles on campus the bicycle must be registered. This is a free service and once registered, the student is given a sticker to affix to the bicycle. The Bicycle Registration Form ( https://www.twu.edu/media/documents/parking/ Bike_Registration_Form.pdf ) is maintained at the Department of Public Safety office.

Students living in Lowry Woods, Vitae, and Select apartments will be responsible for moving their own items; however, there will be an abundance of dollies and moving carts to assist in your move.

How do I get a parking permit?

The parking permit can either be purchased online or from the Department of Public Safety (near the Student Health Services building) on campus.

As the parent (or relative, or friend) who assisted with moving in, can I spend the night in my student’s residence hall?

It is the responsibility of students to obey the parking rules and regulations for the TWU campuses. We have the complete parking rules and regulations and a parking map available for your reference. For more information, please visit: http://www.twu.edu/ parking/

We ask that families make other arrangements after the move.

May I bring my own refrigerator and/or microwave?

What if I need to arrive early?

Refrigerators and microwaves are provided in the rooms.

Only students who are required to be here for a TWU sponsored program or activity will be able to arrive early. Students who have another reason they must move-in early may request an early arrival. These requests are reviewed on an individual basis and will need supporting documentation of the reason for the request.

If approved a fee may be assessed. Request can be made to housing@twu.edu. Please use Early Arrival in the subject line.

What will I be expected to do after I move-in?

Can I bring my pet?

It is prohibited to bring dogs, cats, or other pets inside any University-controlled buildings, except for approved service and/ or emotional support animals. All animals must be registered and approved by the Disability Service for Students Office.

What should I do if I have more than one vehicle on the move-in day?

You may bring all of your vehicles into the unloading area but they all must be moved once they are unpacked.
