letter from the editor As we get closer to winter, who would have thought, we would've traveled to Chicago for NeoCon. NeoCon usually is a late spring-fling filled with humidity, heat, and some of the most talented interior designers in every direction. But not this year. This year was a change; a change in ways we never expected. First, it was October, not June. And the Mart seemed packed, but not like it's used to being. However, the talented designers and workplace managers were there, and the show went on.

This alone was weird as some of us hadn't seen one another for over a year in real life. And, of course, kudos to all those individuals working the showrooms this year. We are a community of trailblazers, and we sometimes need to remind ourselves of that; whether at Neocon, Chairity, or supporting our local IIDA events, we need to remember our influence as a community on how people live and work.

another year, another success Before we close the chapter for Chairity 2021, we want to take the time to thank all who participated, donated, attended, and supported Chairity both from near and far.

Twogether, we were able to raise

$93,000+

This year we partnered with five amazing local nonprofits: Not In Our Town, Stop AAPI Hate, Love the Kids, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, and Project Color Corps.

We had many participants this year. Twenty-two teams joined us to design for 2021’s theme: give twoday, change twomorrow. With that came several show-stopping creations, including piano action-turned lights, partitions turned lounges, and baby rocking chairs.

Chairity serves as a reminder every year of not only giving back but how to. We at two, are so humbled by the community's support and passioned filled work that all the teams put forth. This year to add some excitement to having the event be in real life, we added a “roaring 20’s” theme, which did not disappoint, as the community came out and represented accordingly.

Walking through the showrooms at The Mart, one couldn’t help but notice a recurring trend—the 1980s are back, and we’re here for it. Whether it’s a re-issue of a design from the archives or a refresh of a former trend, this RETRO REDO of the 80s breathes fresh life to the furniture world.

what’s new?

We have a true blast from the past with Martin Brattrud’s re-issue of their Monterey sofa, a 1986 original design by interior designer Steve Chase. Its wide channels and curved arms are representative of the bold and chunky forms commonly found in the 80s but still feel current for today. Embrace the retro feel and create a sci-fi vibe with an optional LED illuminated plinth base.

Lammhult’s new furniture collection borrowed heavily from 80s design elements but in a fresh and new way. Their use of bent steel tubes with their Sunny and Corso lounge chairs created furniture that felt sculptural and playful without compromising comfort. The thoughtful designs use minimal components and durable materials that can be taken apart easily and recycled.

I’ve made this dish countless times, and no one leaves without taking the recipe back with them! – Manali, Graphic Designer

serves 4 Crispy, spicy, a little sweet, and oh so tender! With a creamy layer of sour cream sealing in the moisture of the chicken, each bite is perfect!

Ingredients: 2 tsp. Garlic powder 2 tsp. Paprika / smoked paprika 2 tsp. Onion powder 2 C. Panko Breadcrumbs 1 T. Melted Butter (can sub. For olive oil) 1 T. Olive Oil 4 Chicken Breasts (tenderized) Salt & Pepper 4-6 T. Sour Cream 1/2 C Maple Syrup (or to taste) 1 tsp. Red pepper flakes (or to taste) Directions: • Preheat oven to 425* and adjust rack to the middle • Mix maple syrup and red pepper flakes in a small bowl and leave aside • Pat dry your tenderized chicken breasts, then sprinkle with salt and pepper • Lightly grease a baking sheet, put seasoned chicken breasts on the baking sheet. Top each chicken breast with 1 T. of sour cream, and spread evenly (just on the top of the chicken) • Mix panko breadcrumbs with garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, melted butter, and olive oil in a medium bowl. Taste, then season with lots of salt and pepper. *Feel free to use more or less panko as you want!

The galette is simple to prepare and has a rustic elegance that never fails to impress. – Pearl, Creative Manager

serves 8 French in origin, the buttery, freeform crust can be paired with sweet or savory fillings and is a perfect way to highlight seasonal flavors.

For the pastry: 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour ¼ teaspoon salt 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup or 115 grams) unsalted butter, cubed ¼ cup sour cream or plain yogurt 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice ¼ cup ice water Make the pastry: • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Place the cubed butter in a separate small bowl. Place both bowls in the freezer for 1 hour. Remove the bowls from the freezer.

• Make a well in the center of the flour. Add the butter to the well and, using a pastry blender or two forks, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse meal or sand. Make another well in the center.

• In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream or yogurt, lemon juice, and water and this mixture to the well. With your fingertips or a spoon, combine the liquid and flour mixtures until large clumps form. Keep combining until all of the flour is moistened.

• Dump the mixture onto a piece of plastic wrap and pat the clumps into a ball, working the dough as little as possible. Wrap the dough in the plastic wrap, pound down it into a thick disc, and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.

• Roll out the dough into a large circle about 12” diameter on a lightly floured surface. Transfer the dough to a baking sheet lined with parchment or a Silpat.

Toss to coat apple slices. Place the apples in a circle on the pastry dough, at least 1-2” from the edge. You will be folding the edge over the apples when done.

• Overlap the apple slices until you reach the center. Scatter the cranberries over the apples, and then fold the edge of the dough over the apples, pinching or pleating the dough as needed. The overall look should be rustic – imperfections are okay!

• Dot the top of the fruit with butter, bake at 400 degrees F for about 40 – 45 minutes until crust is golden and apples appear tender.

• Serve warm with ice cream on the side. (Optional: dust with powdered sugar before serving).

The history of the Negroni has been debated, but the most confirmed version is that the drink was invented at Caffe Casoni in Florence, Italy in 1919. The legend states that Count Camillo Negroni was thirsty and wanted something with a bit more of a kick. So he asked his bartender Forsco Scarselli, to strengthen his favorite cocktail – the americano – by using gin instead of soda water in his drink.

What you need: Vermouth Campari Gin Orange (for garnish)

Directions: • Fill a glass up with ice, then pour 1 oz (1 part) Campari, 1 oz (1 part) Gin and 1 oz (1 part) Sweet Vermouth into the glass • With a spoon, stir all the ingredients in the glass for about 20 seconds.

• Garnish with an orange peel and serve.
