Modern Design The last Modern Design sale of 2019 is here and the Waveney Room is packed with goodies for all budgets with some lovely gems. Top lot has to be the Kai Kristiansen Brazilian Rosewood three piece suite fully restored and upholstered in Bute Fabrics, it is so scarce to find a suite so this is a rare opportunity. A lovely pair of Hans Wegner wishbone chairs and a rocker would compliment your seating arrangements. A very rare and early Elisabeth Frink print from 1951 is an exciting find, purchased by a friend, Muni Ciappara, at that time. Muni was a potter and some of her work is also featured in the sale along with works by John Ward, Joanna Constantinidis, Bernard Leach and John Maltby. The usual selection of brightly coloured glass includes a private collection of Whitefriars, Scandinavian and British designs, early Christmas presents perhaps? The sale will be ‘Live’ via www.the-saleroom.com but we’d rather see you here in person so come along to the viewing. James Bassam Senior Valuer

Muni Ciappara (Maurine Angelia Louise Galwey (15/04/1933 - 26/12/2017) Muni attended the Chelsea School of Art from 1949 -1953. She was a great friend of Elisabeth Frink, who introduced her to ceramics, sculpture and cigarettes. The piece by Frink later in this sale, lot 4652, was bought in 1953 by Muni from Elisabeth’s final year exhibition. It was a source of pride that Elisabeth also bought one of Muni’s exhibits at the close of the show. Muni worked continuously with clay in all its forms her whole life. Teaching for many years in Richmond upon Thames and New Malden, hundreds of students discovered a love of ceramics and maintained contact with her and her work in Studio Pottery. Everything she made contained a spark of devine inspiration that is granted to so few, and was avidly bought by all who came to her studio. Muni has sold work to clients all over the world and many returned to her studio time and again to add to their collections. The work on sale here is the last of its kind and spans half a century of Muni’s joy expressed in clay.
