In 1968 the new bridge was built, which ran off Alma Street instead of Prospero Street. Various businesses and some houses were demolished to make way for the new bridge, including the Regent Café, a doctors’ surgery, newsagent, and grocery store.

Some of the earliest businesses were Hartmann’s General Merchants, Holston’s Furniture Emporium, and Hayes Garage. In the 1910s and 1920s, when these businesses were in existence, there were also four barber shops, the Terminus and Royal Hotels, Trevan’s (later Partridge & Walker), Worley and Fellows Newsagency, a doctor’s surgery, chemist, King’s Golden Ray Ice-cream, cafés, bakeries, second hand shops, the Police Station, boarding houses, hardware store, Fred Nolan’s lollie shop, fruit shops, dry cleaners, plumbers, a bike shop and a Chinese herbalist Wing Yuen Lee.

The original Regent Theatre was in Alma Street along with houses and businesses that occupied the area that is now Budd Park. The Regent Theatre stood on this site from 1929 until it was destroyed by fire in 1945.
