A BEAUTIFUL art deco building on prime real estate in Tweed Heads has just gone on the market with DJ Stringer Coolangatta.
The property is included in a larger lot running from 27 Bay Street to 24 Stuart Street — a total of 916 square metres.
Whitehall Lodge is in the central commercial hub of Tweed Heads on the edge of Coolangatta, a short walk from the best that both have to offer.
When it was originally built around 1940, Whitehall Lodge was known as Kelvin Court and is a wonderful example of the streamlined modern architecture
style known as art deco or the waterfall style, with signature curved windows and bold structure.
The arrival of the Queensland Railway in 1903 sparked a flurry of development in Bay Street. Hordes of Queensland tourists came down for day trips, picnics and holidays.
Tweed Heads Station was close to the camping areas that ran along the foreshore of Greenmount and Rainbow Bay beaches, as well as to the Tweed Heads waterfront where Jack Evans is now.
The train station was close to the accommodation houses and hotels in Tweed Heads and Bay Street which “had direct access to the river boats at the northern boat harbour wharves in Wharf Street, operated by Skinners to Murwillumbah and the NSW rail terminus”, according to the Tweed Heads Historical Society.
With a huge influx of tourists, Bay Street became home to many boarding houses.
Kelvin Court was built as a
tourist property and was the place to stay and be seen in its heyday.
The Sands family arrived in the early 1920s and were joined by Albert and Elsie Gill in constructing a landmark cafe in Wharf Street.
When the Sands family sold the business, Elsie and her son Kevin took over the running of Kelvin Court (Whitehall Lodge).
The art deco building with its 1960s restaurant on the northern side was a popular guest house and venue for many functions including wedding receptions. The arrival of American troops on leave in the area was a huge boost to the business.
Kelvin Court, now Whitehall Lodge, still stands with shops built around it, in one of the best locations on the coast.
At the end of the street is Tweed Mall, with Jack Evans Boat Harbour, Twin Towns, the beaches of Coolangatta, Rainbow Bay, Snapper Rocks and D-Bah just a walk away.
It is also a short walk to The Tweed Hospital and bowls club.
The property features up to 33 dormitory-style rooms over two levels (many with hand basins).
There are also 12 separate bathrooms, a commercial kitchen, a large communal living area, separate large dining/recreation room, a manager’s office, a selfcontained manager’s unit on the upper level and a rear courtyard.
David said the block has zoning for a ten storey or 34-metre building.
“The ideal development scenario would be retail on the bottom and then maybe offices on the first level and then eight levels of
residential on top,” he said. “It’s also an ideal property for someone who is looking at developing but wants an income stream first.
“It could be revamped or turned into student accommodation and use the outdoor space there for recreation facilities for students.
“There is a huge demand for student accommodation but there is also a big demand for longer term accommodation as well so that is a very good income stream as well.”
The property is for sale by negotiation.
