Mission Statement The Wellington Academy Boarding House recognises that each student is an individual. Therefore, our mission is to develop young men and women with active and creative minds, a sense of understanding and compassion for others, and the courage to act on their beliefs. We stress the total development of each child: spiritual, linguistic, logical, moral, social, personal, cultural and physical.

At the Wellington Academy we have tried to create a culture that encourages you to learn with freedom and embrace the responsibility afforded to you whenever possible.

Our philosophy is very simple: We want a house where you are happy, safe, enjoying and achieving. This will allow you to develop and grow at your own pace in an environment where respect and consideration are held in high esteem.

Our objective is to make the boarding house as close to home as we can, however, it is not possible to run a home for 100 students without appropriate rules and regulations. You will find a summary of these in the following pages. We have tried to ensure that rules have been kept to a minimum. Therefore, this handbook only attempts to put in place rules and routines that appear necessary from the start.

Our aim is to see each person who passes through the house grow as an individual, flourishing in the house and fulfilling their potential both in the house and the wider school environment. The most compelling benefit of boarding is learning how to interact with a broader range of people. Boarders will be reminded that the environment of the boarding house is reliant on how students interact with one another and therefore, you are asked to treat others as you expect to be treated.

All boarders are expected to take a serious approach to developing their academic studies. There is a dedicated slot for this every weekday evening, the expected length of which varies according to the age of the learner. House Tutors support this study to help ensure that the best use is made of this time.

Private study is, of course, not limited to these times only. All boarders have study areas, with our older students having single, en-suite, study bedrooms.

It is hoped that this handbook will help to set the tone for boarding at TWA, as well as giving some useful information. Some of this will make more sense once you are here!

Our Boarding Team Our boarding team helps create a warm and homely environment, providing personalised support and guidance. All House Tutors are also members of staff in our Academy. Seven of them live within the house, so it is their home too!

Members of our boarding staff are first-aid trained and they work alongside our Boarding Matron in providing day-to-day medical needs.

Background information

Director of Boarding Mrs Davidson

Mrs Davidson joined the Academy in September 2014, moving from a school in West Yorkshire, where she was the Head of Girls’ Boarding.

She lives on site, with her husband and two daughters, who attend the Academy and Primary Academy. Mrs Davidson also teaches Drama at the Academy.

Mr Price has been a part of the boarding team for the last 31/2 years and lives in the boarding house full time with his 5 year old son, Toby. When not working within the boarding house he teaches Physical Education.

Miss Smith first joined the Academy in September 2009 as a Teacher of Textiles & Visual Arts where she moved from her birth town of Cardiff. She previously worked for 2 years in the boarding house, rejoining the team as Head of Girls Boarding in September 2015.

Miss Grainger joined the Academy in 2014 as a Geography teacher.

She has experience of being in boarding as a student and as such can bring a wealth of experience to the students, as well as help with their Humanities homework!

Miss Baker studied French with Italian studies at the University of Warwick and will have a PGCE from the University of Bristol. She joined the Academy in September 2015 to teach Maths. Her main hobbies include going to the cinema and seeing friends but she also enjoys swimming.

She came into teaching because she love maths!

Mr Azzopardi was born in the city of Hobart in Tasmania, Australia, where he spent the first 24 years of his life. He is a huge sports fan, particularly of cricket, basketball and Australian rules football, He studied a degree in Business at the University of Tasmania and a Diploma of Sports Administration. In 2015, a desire to travel the world and gain professional experience led him to a position at Sherborne International School in Dorset, and he is looking forward to taking up the post of Residential Tutor at the Wellington Academy.

Mr Olufunwa is our Business Development Manager at the Academy. He oversees the gym and as such organises lots of activities for the boarders.

Benson and Wellesley House Our boarding house and facilities

We have designed our boarding houses with the help and support of our sponsor school, Wellington College, which has over 150 years’ experience in boarding.

The comfort and care of our students is of paramount importance and our boarding houses are designed with this very much in mind. Our building has a secure entry system using “biometrics”, a digital signature created from your finger print!

There are two identical sides (boys and girls) to the building, with all the facilities and features you would expect from a leading 21st century school. We also have common space for mixed use.

Head of Benson and Head of Wellesley House Each year a Head of Benson and Wellesley House will be appointed and supported by a team of selected Boarding Prefects. Their role is one of support and encouragement both to boarding staff but more importantly to the younger students at the Academy. Their authority comes from their maturity and standing within the boarding house but they will have the full backing of the Director of Boarding when required.

Their roles are: • to meet regularly with the Director of Boarding to discuss all matters pertaining to boarders • to assist the Director of Boarding, house parent and house staff as required • help other boarders with any difficulties (within reason) that they may be experiencing • take responsibility for organising and checking morning and evening routines and duty rotas • set a good example that embodies the spirit of the Academy and maintain behaviour and an attitude that a Wellington Academy boarder should exhibit

Travel Information Returning to boarding at the start of term

Before returning for the start of any term it would be helpful if: • dental and other check-ups could be scheduled for the holidays to avoid disruption in term time.

• students return with hair that is an appropriate colour and cut.

• school uniform is clean, marked with named labels and that it still fits! In particular shirts should fit and be long enough to tuck in.

It is the parents/guardians responsibility to ensure the boarder can get to the Academy at the correct time, and depart at the correct time. If parents/guardians require us to arrange boarders’ travel we need at least 3 weeks notice. This enables us to coordinate the arrangements and order taxis if necessary. It is a requirement that the Academy ensure that boarders are suitably looked after by a responsible adult, therefore boarders must be in the care of a specific named adult. If this is not the boarders parent or guardian, then an email from the parent specifying who this is would be necessary. Boarders are not allowed to go to hotels on their own as they are not being looked after by an adult at this time.

If we receive arrangements within a suitable time frame, taxi arrangements can be made with Stephens Taxis. We have a close relationship with Stephens Taxis and the drivers that we use have all been checked for their suitability to work with children. Taxis to and from the airport can be recharged onto your next bill. All other recharges need to be specifically approved via email.

Any passports should be handed to the Director of Boarding who will photocopy them and keep them in a secure place along with NHS card and any prescribed medicines (which must be stored in our lockable medicine cabinet.

Guardians All boarders are required to have a guardian appointed by the parents. The role of the guardian is to act on behalf of the parents and the child, as necessary, sometimes making decisions on behalf of the parents and as such should be responsible and mature in their approach and understanding of the role that they are fulfilling. The guardian should fulfil the following criteria: • live within one hours drive from the Wellington Academy • be over the age of 25 • be trusted by the parents of the student to make key decisions about the child’s welfare, if the parents are not available • be prepared to collect the child at short notice, in the case of medical emergencies, or fixed term exclusions • be prepared to attend parents evenings, if required by the parent

Boarding Term Dates 2016-2017 There are clear times that the boarding house opens and closes - this is designed to take into consideration that some boarders are travelling some distance. Please DO NOT arrive outside of these times as the boarding house will be closed, and there will not be an adult to supervise your child. If travel arrangements dictate that your child will arrive outside of these hours, your guardian should be used for interim childcare arrangements. It may be necessary for your child to pack up their room over the holidays as we often let the boarding house during these times. This enables us to keep the boarding fees as low as possible.

Our expectations are clear: all students in Year 7 -11 should come to breakfast every day wearing the following: • • • • •

6th Form dress code

6th Form students will be regarded as role models for lower school students and their standards of dress are an important part of the aspirational culture of the 6th Form.

Students are asked to regard 6th Form dress requirements in a positive manner. It is increasingly common for 6th Forms to have an expectation that students come into school wearing business dress. The aim is to have a smart appearance that allows a degree of personal choice. However, your school is a workplace and your appearance should reflect that. On certain occasions, you will be required to dress formally in House colours (details below).

A collared shirt should be worn (polo shirts are acceptable and t-shirts may be worn under jumpers) Tailored trousers or chinos (jeans are not acceptable) Suit jacket, blazer, jumper or cardigan (hoodies are not acceptable) Smart shoes must be worn (no trainers or flip flops) Ties are optional

Girls

• Smart tops eg shirt or blouse must be worn (exposure of the abdomen is unacceptable as are low cut, strapless, backless or baggy tops) • Skirts and dresses should not be too short (just above knee length at the shortest and no denim) • Trousers may be full or ¾ length but no shorter. Any cropped trousers must be formal or tailored.

• Suit jacket, blazer, jumper or cardigan (hoodies are not acceptable) • Smart shoes or boots must be worn (no trainers or flip flops) Clothing required for course specific reasons eg chef whites and sports clothes may be worn in those lessons as and when required by the teacher but must not be worn around the school in general.

Clothing that features logos, slogans or badges are unacceptable - this does not extend to manufacturers names or small logos that are displayed discreetly.

Hats and other headwear items are also deemed unacceptable.

Most jewellery is considered acceptable; however, students may be required to remove items if an excessive amount of jewellery is worn.

Because of the constant changes of fashion that take place, it has to remain the right of the Senior Leadership Team, and the Head of 6th Form to determine that a particular item of dress is not appropriate for school.

Students who turn up to school inappropriately dressed will be asked to go home and change.

Repeated failure to meet the expectations of 6th Form will lead to further disciplinary action.

The following items are not allowed: • Face furniture eg. solid, coloured piercings in nose/lip. Any existing piercings must be removed or be replaced by clear plastic studs only at the Head of Year’s discretion, and must be covered with a blue plaster in Food & Catering lessons and during any Sport lessons and activities. Tongue piercings are strictly not permitted at the Academy.

• Boots are only really appropriate for winter months and should not be worn in the spring/summer/ early autumn period. Under no circumstances should trousers be tucked into boots.

• Under no circumstances should students wear hoodies or any other garment that is not part of the school uniform.

Trips and Activities

We encourage a balance of academic work and participation in extra-curricular pursuits. We help our students to develop holistic skills such as leadership, problem solving, team work and community service.

Our extensive club and activities programme presents students with a wide variety of challenging and enjoyable activities. Students are given the opportunity to develop new skills and interests in areas they might never have considered before. Boarding provides a rich opportunity for us to broaden horizons, foster life-long learning and celebrate different strengths. This learning is a way of life, not just an add-on.

Every member of our boarding community is encouraged to develop strengths and interests through our wider curriculum and is supported to do so by our boarding team. Indeed, many

activities will specifically be run only for our boarders and others are organised/run by our boarders themselves as part of their leadership development. All boarders from Year 9 upwards will be encouraged to be involved in our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and/or The Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE). The Academy’s purpose built theatre and studio space presents a fantastic opportunity for our students. We have a mixture of contemporary and classic drama in a typical year, as well as regular musical and other artistic productions.

We also arrange a wide variety of trips at the weekend including paintballing, ice skating, cinema trips, bowling, Go Ape, Go Karting, laser quest, swimming, crazy golf, quad biking, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, shopping, canoeing, archery, mountain biking, visits to Thorpe Park, Monkey World, Chessington, Legoland etc. Some activities may incur an additional charge.

Please note that boarders who sign up for an activity and subsequently do not attend will be charged the cost of the activity.

Essential Information Electrical items

All furniture is provided so please do not bring additional items unless this has been cleared beforehand. Plugs are square-pin and 13 amp; 3 amp fuses must be fitted. Do not bring candles or joss sticks. Students are welcome to bring a radio, MP3 or stereo but these should not be played at an anti-social volume and headphones are recommended. DO NOT bring fan heaters, fridges, kettles etc.

Laptops/personal computers

We recommend that students bring their own laptop/personal computer as a lot of school work is completed using computers/internet. When students arrive they will need to take their laptop to the IT department who will enable them to access the school wireless network. The network is closely monitored so inappropriate sites will be blocked. During prep time (3.30pm - 5.00pm) students will not be able to use sites such as Facebook/You Tube. For those boarders who wish to use Skype this is available through the school wireless network. Students may save school work onto the school drive and access this through the wireless network in the boarding house.

Personal property and insurance

Personal property remains the responsibility of the student, the Academy are not able to take responsiility for items which are brought into the boarding house, unless given to a member of staff to be locked away. The Academy insurance does not cover individual items. Parents may wish to purchase additional insurance through your own insurance company to cover their child’s belongings. It is essential that all boarders bring a padlock to lock their belongings away in their wardrobe.

Bedding

All bedding is supplied by the house. However, students may bring their own bedding if they wish to, especially duvet covers, in order to personalise their rooms.

Clothes

All items of clothing MUST be clearly marked using sew-in name labels and some spare name labels should be given to the House parents for items purchased during term time. One supplier of labels, but by no means the only one, can be found at www.jjcash.co.uk Within the house and during periods of free time, students do not need to wear uniform. All nonuniform clothes should be appropriate for use in a co-ed environment; should be clearly marked with sew-in name labels and should be suitable for washing and tumble drying.

Any items of clothing left at the end of the academic year will be donated to charity.

Laundry

The housekeepers are in charge of the laundry.

Students will be allocated a laundry bag for dirty clothes which for Years 7-11 are left outside the laundry after breakfast on certain mornings and then collected form the laundry after school. All school shirts will be ironed and the housekeeper will repair clothes when required. 6th Form students do their own laundry, every day after 4.00pm – when the laundry is supervised by the house staff. Bedding is washed on a weekly basis and boarders are expected to strip their beds ready for cleaning.

Money/passports

There is a facility within school where parents can input money into their child’s account and students can access this money from the finance office in school at break and lunchtime. Students must not have cash in their rooms over the sum of £20; this must be deposited with staff for safe keeping or taken over to school. Students may have a bank account.

Students are not to borrow money or lend money to another student. Money should not be left lying around the house. If in doubt hand it in to be looked after.

Passports must be handed into house staff when arriving into boarding at the start of each term and signed back out to the student the day before travelling home.

Sundries account

All students are required to have a £200 sundries account, which is paid into ParentPay. This enables smaller sums to be drawn upon, for example art or technology equipment needed in school. Taxis will be paid via the Sundries account. Should your child require frequent long distance taxis, then you will need to top up the sundries account. If there is insufficient funds in the sundries account, taxis can not be booked.

Damage agreement

All boarders are responsible for their own personal belongings. The boarding house facilities are to be treated with respect and any damage will be charged. Any purposeful damage caused by decoration (eg. sellotape on walls) will be charged for. All rooms are checked and photographed at the end of terms and parents notified of any necessary charges.

Padlock and lockable Spaces

All students are required to bring a padlock for their wardrobe. This enables them to lock away securely their own belongings. If a student loses their key, boarding staff can break the padlock open.

Aerosols

The use of aerosols is banned in the house.

Fire

Fire evacuation practices routinely happen.

Whenever the fire alarm sounds, students must assume that there is a fire and the house must be evacuated as quickly as possible in silence.

Students must exit by the nearest fire exit and meet by the netball courts at the rear of the boarding house to be registered. This should be done in silence.

Illness

If you feel ill in the morning and wish to be excused from lessons you must report to one of the house parent’s at breakfast. Unwell students

returning to the house from school must inform the duty staff - don’t just go straight to your room. When ill, you will be asked to remain in your room and rest. When you are well enough to socialise in common areas then you are well enough to return to school. In certain circumstances if you are ill we may ring your parents/guardians and ask them to collect you from school. For cases of diarrhoea and vomiting students will be isolated and must remain off school for 48 hours.

If you need to, you can arrange an appointment to see the nurse who has a clinic in the main school. If you need to see a doctor the house parent can make an appointment for you. All students are registered with the local doctor’s practice.

Illness during the night

If you are ill and need assistance during the night then you, or a friend, may go directly to the house parents and ask for assistance. Resident staff are on site throughout the night.

Meals

These are compulsory for everyone including at weekends. Permission must be gained from the duty staff if a meal is to be missed. Those with allergies or those a food preference eg. vegetarian can be catered for but please ensure that this information has been given to the house parent. You must be appropriately dressed for meal times.

Mobile phones and tablets

Communication with home and friends is an important right for boarders and the school fully accepts the possession and use of mobile phones in the boarding house. Students must be wary that there are appropriate and inappropriate times when a mobile may be used. Year 7-9 are to hand in their mobile phones at 9.00pm.

Phones may not be used and will be confiscated if used:

• after lights out • during meal times • in an anti-social manner • during prep and the working school day

Guests

Boarding students may invite a friend or guest, into the house provided that they observe the following.

1. The host/hostess must ask permission of Duty Staff before issuing the invitation.

2. The host/hostess will be deemed responsible for the guest’s behaviour whilst in the house and ensures that he/she understands and abides by house rules.

3. The guest must be introduced to Duty Staff on arrival and sign in/out.

4. The guest is only allowed in communal areas, NOT IN YOUR ROOM OR CORRIDOR.

ParentPay

The Academy operates a cashless system for purchasing additional items in the café and restaurant. Funds can be paid into your son/ daughters account via ParentPay. www.parentpay.com

Alcohol and drugs

Alcohol and drugs are not allowed in the boarding house under any circumstances. Drugs are illegal and will be treated as such, by being handed onto relevant authorities, such as the police. Alcohol is illegal for all students who are under 18, and will also be treated as such. This

may involve relevant authorities. The boarding house works closely with the local police station and will undergo routine drugs testing for example sniffer dogs may be brought in by the local police. The police may, at times, recommend other forms of drugs testing within the house.

If a student is suspected of having taken drugs or alcohol, it may be necessary to carry out a room search. Students who are found to have been involved with alcohol or drugs will be subject to our Drugs and Alcohol Policy, which may include a temporary or permanent removal of the boarding place.

Searching and confiscation

Staff may need to search an individual child, their room, or their possessions. This will be carried out if there is suspicion that the child has banned items on them or in their room. This will be done in accordance with our search and confiscation policy at all times.

Safeguarding

The Wellington Academy serves to safeguard and protect the students within our care. Should there be any concerns raised about the welfare of a student we will follow our own policies and Wilthsire Council policies with regards to alerting relevant authorities about safeguarding concerns we may have.

Rewards and Sanctions The Boarders’ Policy for Rewards and Sanctions’ is consistent with, and so reinforces the policy of the school, which seeks to promote behaviour based on mutual respect between all members of the school community.

Rewards

All staff are encouraged to recognise good behaviour with both praise, enthusiasm, students are awarded House points. This enables recognition of good behaviour and notable achievements for the individual, house points are awarded at the discretion of the staff or prefects. This recognition will be recorded on the students file and feeds into the school House points system. House prefects and other students, as are rewarded by taking them on a special meal at the end of every term. This reward may be for tidy rooms, highest scores in school, including house points.

Applied town leave means leaving the school site. Students are allowed to walk around ON SITE, take phone calls outside etc until 15 minutes BEFORE they need to be in their rooms for bedtime.

Permission to stay out

If you wish to stay out (at a friend’s house, for example) - we need permission from your parents.

If they are invited to stay overnight parental consent is required. Written permission from your parent/ guardian and the ‘host’ parents’ permission should be gained by Wednesday evening so as to allow the weekend arrangements to be made. After this time it will not be possible to make appropriate arrangements. It is up to the students concerned to make arrangements in good time.

If you intend to go in someone’s car we MUST have written consent from your parents - agreeing to you travelling in that specific person’s car. The exception to this rule is if you are travelling on public transport where the driver is a professional driver, or you are travelling with a member of Academy staff who has been approved as suitable.

Decoration

You may put up pictures etc. on the pin board provided in your room using drawing pins or White Blu tac may be used to decorate walls as this will not leave a greasy stain. Never use sellotape or normal Blu tac on the walls or ceiling. Please, do not stick pins in to the wood. Your room will be inspected after you leave and any damage will generate a recharge on your bill.
