The Never-Ending Quest for Content Behind Every TVO Doc

There are millions of stories being told every day and documentaries are an amazing way to learn more about them and the world around you.

When I watch a documentary, I want to be enlightened. I want my thinking to be challenged, and I want to be presented with new ideas or perspectives that I had never considered. And more importantly, I want to be entertained. This is the lens that the TVO Docs team brings to our work so that you, our valued donors, and viewers, can be entertained and informed at the same time.

TVO gets pitched hundreds of projects a year that we could take on as TVO Original documentaries or could bring to our audiences as acquisitions. But what we are looking for is the unique mix of thoughtprovoking stories from a particular point of view that hasn’t been seen or heard before. The goal is to find films that tell a personal story no matter what the scale or subject. Many of these subjects include social issues just waiting to be discovered and given a platform. For instance, in June, we will be celebrating Pride and National Indigenous History Month with some new and exciting documentaries like Parade: Queer Acts of Love & Resistance and revisiting some of our favourites like NDN POV and Ever Deadly.

At the end of the day, it is our intention to find films that we feel will stand out as the best of the best and share them with our loyal audience and beyond.

Carl the Collector

Ontario Premiere Saturday June 14

Follow the everyday adventures of Carl, a warm-hearted autistic raccoon who enjoys collecting things. Carl pays extraordinarily close attention to detail and comes up with unique ideas that others might not consider. These traits helped him build extensive collections—from autographs and bottle caps to fake mustaches, pet rocks, sweaters, and virtually everything in between—which can come in handy for solving problems around the neighbourhood with his friends.

McMurtry and Roy Romanow sat down to talk about how they worked out the deal for the repatriation of the Constitution and the Charter of Rights, thirty years after the fact. Episodes were dedicated to helping you understand the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the national response to COVID and Ontario’s role in the hunt for a vaccine, and the future of federalism. There were many guests discussing issues impacting Ontarians all over the province: housing, affordability, food security, family health access, the opioid crisis, mental health, and education.

Regardless of the topic, The Agenda team always ensured that the points of view and voices brought to the table were diverse

and represented the perspectives of the unique communities that make up Ontario including remote communities, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, Indigenous voices, and Black Canadians, among others.

After thousands of incredible guests and even more important topics discussed from all sides, there is no doubt that fans of The Agenda can call out their favourite, most memorable or most impactful. No matter what you value most about The Agenda, we at TVO value you, our dedicated audience and donors. Your commitment to supporting public affairs programming and trusted journalism has been energizing for the last 19 seasons and we hope you will bring that to our new show this fall.

A rundown on The Rundown

We know you value turning to TVO for original journalism and in-depth analysis exploring social, political, cultural, and economic issues that impact Ontarians. We are going to bring all of that and more to you with our new public affairs show, The Rundown, starting this fall in the same time slot as The Agenda.

Leaning into TVO’s digital video expertise, each episode of The Rundown will look at a single topic in multiple ways using a mix of hosted studio interviews and field segments, ‘streeters’ and explainer-style videos to bring different and diverse perspectives.

The editorial standards will be similar to what you are familiar with from The Agenda, though the production style will be more varied. The show will feature voices from a range of professional, cultural, and ideological perspectives, prioritizing guests with firsthand knowledge of the topics. Maintaining TVO’s non-partisan stance, The Rundown will help you to connect global and national issues to local impact, ensuring stories are relatable for you and all Ontarians.
