We have had quite a year haven’t we?! Covid brought many very difficult things to our way of life. We must first acknowledge those among us who lost loved ones to the virus. Very strangely, it was gentle to some, yet wicked to others. May those who died rest in the peaceful and loving arms of our Savior and may their loved ones place hope in eternal life. The virus also unfortunately spawned what we came to know as the “cancel culture.” In an effort to remain safe and continue a safe environment for others, many gatherings and events were discontinued or postponed. I know many of us were very disappointed from things not being quite the same last year. I encourage us to look on the bright side. First I think/hope many of us no longer take for granted the blessings of our current gatherings nor the people with whom we’re able to share these. Second, despite a great uncertainty last summer, we were in fact able to have certain sporting and extracurricular events after all, many of which brought great success. Finally, perhaps we can now also see a value in our sports competitions as a great aid to overcoming such obstacles in the future. The virtues learned within sports help teach our kids: teamwork, the value of a coach’s wisdom and encouragement amidst challenges, regular discipline of hard work, and hopeful perseverance to the end. These are all virtues valuable when facing a pandemic! Thank you to all our parents, volunteers, and staff who help in so many ways behind the scenes to make these moments possible. How wonderful to be fully engaged and open once again! Long live sports, especially at St. Mary’s Colgan!

Dennis Burke Director of School Advancement It doesn’t seem possible that a year has gone by and what a year that was! As I write this, a year ago we weren’t even sure we were going to have sports. When we found out we could, we then weren’t sure we could have fans. The year was challenging to say the least but I want to express my gratitude to our Panther families for their patience and support as we navigated the ins and outs of a pandemic. At the end of the day, however, we did have sports and our kids were able to play! By the time the Booster Club picnic rolls around I’m hoping for a more normal sports season (including lots of victories, of course!). I don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to a sports season without vouchers, digital thermometers and Endingmasks!theyear with a state championship sure sets the mood for the upcoming season. I hope to see our stands, both inside and out full of our fans as we kick off another season of SMC Panther athletics! Go Panthers!
Wes Streeter SMC Principal Hello Panthers! As I enter my 3rd year as principal, I am sure we can all hope and pray that this year starts and finishes in a normal fashion. Not only did we finish the 20-21 school year, but we finished with a bang! We had a normal graduation ceremony with three valedictory speeches that reflected amazingly on the Class of 2021 and their journey. We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing all the great Catholic things they will Summeraccomplish!weights, camps, clinics, etc. were busy, but fruitful. Our coaches and players have put in hard work to each of their disciplines. I’m excited for the Fall and Spring to see this work payoff. A special congratulation to all our 20-21 teams and their successes this past year. We added 2 more state championship banners to the Fieldhouse!! (Girls Golf and Girls Softball). To see all our recent accomplishments, check out our new trophy case in the High School commons! I want to thank the Booster Club for their endless and countless hours of volunteering and support. As a school, we immensely appreciate all you do year-round to support Colgan Athletics. I also want to thank our parents, alumni, staff, teachers and coaches for all of the sacrifices that you make for our kids. Faith, Excellence and Tradition will continue to be who we are...with Faith being the most important! We are proud to have been named a distinguished school in the Dioceses for our Catholic Culture! Only 2 of the 38 schools in the Diocese were recognized with this honor! This would not be possible without the spiritual leadership from Father Jerome and Father Labenz and the overall leadership for the schools from Mr. Burke. I also want to give a special shout out to Mr. Spencer, our Athletic Director, for all his hard work this past year. Thank you to them for their leadership and support! Jenelle Marietta Assistant Coach Coach Marietta is back this season to help the Panthers after an 8-year hiatus. While she was away, her and her husband Mick watched their two oldest children Madison and Cash graduate from Colgan and attend different universities. Their youngest son, Banks, is a freshman at SMC this year. Coach Marietta is looking forward to the season and glad to be back helping coach the sport she loves.
In addition, she serves as the head track and field coach at SMC.
CJ AssistantStockardCoach Stockard is beginning her first season as an assistant coach for the Panthers volleyball team. She graduated from St. Mary’s Colgan in 2019 and played for four years under Coach Oplotnik. She continued her volleyball career at Pittsburg State University and is now studying Psychology. Stockard has been coaching at the Star Aquila volleyball club for three years, and is excited to continue her coaching career at St. Mary’s Colgan.

Head Coach Coach Oplotnik enters her 16th season as the Panthers head volleyball coach. Oplotnik guided the Panthers to first place in the CNC the past three seasons and has taken her teams to the State tournament eight times in her career, including finishing fourth at state in 2018 and third at state in 2015. Also, the Panthers were awarded with the class 2A Program of the year in 2015. Her overall record at SMC is 411-189 entering the 2020 season. A three sport ath lete at Girard High School, she went on to play basketball at Ft. Scott Commu nity College prior to graduating from Pittsburg State University. Coach Oplot nik currently teaches Junior High and High School PE and Junior High Science.

Coach Seematter begins his fifth season as the Head Coach of the Panthers. The Panthers have amassed a 33-13 record in his four seasons as head coach. He graduated from Royal Valley High School in Hoyt, Kansas, and received a degree in Secondary Education from Kansas State University. He served as the Defensive Coordinator at Halstead High School prior to coming to Colgan. Coach Seematter and his wife, Kaylyn, recently celebrated their one year wedding anniversary.

Line Coach Caskey is entering his second season coaching Colgan Panther football and works with the offensive line and defensive line. Coach Caskey played football at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, from 1996-98 and has coached many youth sports throughout the Pittsburg community for more than 10 years. Coach Caskey is a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He holds degrees in business management and marketing and is employed as a Pricing Analyst at Pitt Plastics. He and his wife Miranda have four daughters Brooklyn, Haylee, Leah, and Aubri -who are all students at SMC.

Coach Cichon enters his 36th season as a defensive coordinator and 42nd year coaching football. Coach Cichon also was an assistant coach for six years at Bishop Miege before coming to SMC in 1983. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BS degree in Mathematics and MS degrees in Physical Education and Administration. Coach Cichon and his wife Kathy have three children: Tracy Evans, Scott Cichon and Molly Cichon, all are Colgan graduates.

Coach Karleskint is entering his first year coaching Colgan Panther football. He played quarterback for Kansas Wesleyan where he earned his bachelor’s of arts degree in health, physical education and recre ation in 2002. Coach Karleskint earned a master’s of education from Northwest Missouri State University in 2005 and Iowa State University in 2011. He has coached football at several different colleges, most recently serving as Pittsburg State Univesity's wide receiver coach from 2016-2020. Coach Karleskint and his wife, Kati, have three daughters: Alli, Lilli and Graci.

For the 33nd season, Virgil will assist this year’s Panther football team. Coach Winn’s multiple duties range from head statistician to quarter-eagles coach. Coach Winn has been involved in all of the athletic programs at SMC for many years. His contributions to the programs are invaluable and the impact that he has had on the lives of the student athletes is immeasurable.

BRANDON NGO Assistant Coach Brandon Ngo is serving as cross country assistant coach for his fifth season. Coach Ngo is an SMC alum and is currently studying Graphic Communications and Computer Information Systems at Pittsburg State University.
SCOTT CICHON Head Coach Coach Cichon serves as cross country coach in its sixth year at St. Mary’s Colgan. Coach Cichon is an SMC alum and received a BSED degree in Mathematics from Pittsburg State University. He played basketball while attending PSU. Coach Cichon also serves as the boy’s assistant basketball coach and assistant track and field coach. A dedicated runner himself, he has qualified and ran in the Boston Marathon the past ten years. AssistantLeachCoachCoach Coach Leach begins his second year (1st season with the girls) coaching golf for the Panthers. He is excited to share his knowledge of the game and empower student athletes to get better every day. While in high school Coach Leach was a threetime state qualifier, and a two-time placer. He was also part of a 4x league championship team and won one individually. After high school he played at the college level for Allen County Community College and Independence Community College. He is currently finishing his education degree at Pittsburg State University.

Head Coach Coach Scripsick is honored to begin her first year as head coach with the Panther Girls Golf team where she has served as assistant coach the last two seasons. The Panthers had a very successful season last year being undefeated in all Varsity and Junior Varsity tournaments. They are the reigning 3-1A State Champions. Scripsick was part of a three-year state championship golf team in Columbus during high school and has remained an avid golfer ever since. She is excited to continue the success this season with our lady Panthers. She is currently the Bookkeeper and Benefit Coordinator for Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.
