FORWARD

St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians, “Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. Every athlete exercises discipline in every way.

They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.” (9:24-25). This quote from St. Paul seems appropriate for us to ponder as we begin this school year and Fall sports season. It’s been quite a race of endurance in our culture since the beginning of 2020 to say the least!

Likewise, St. Paul speaks of winning a crown of leaves that withers in time, as in the Greek Olympic games. These would have existed in his time, and who knows, maybe he had met a real Olympian in the 1st century. It is good that sports and some Fall activities have begun, but the threat of not having them is a good reminder to us of just how fragile things are (like a crown of leaves) in life.

Certainly a tragedy such as a house fire, or a recent diagnosis of cancer, or the loss of a loved one brings us to the same spot where we are forced to recognize the true value of things and not take things or people in our lives for granted. The ability to play in a sport, cheer for a game, or even come as a spectator is an added gift in life!

A crown of leaves, or a trophy earned by something like a State Championship, is awesome and something to celebrate. But even more precious is the crown of immortal life we receive in heaven for winning the race of our souls. Perseverance and courage are needed for both… but especially necessary for the eternal crown are those Christian virtues of Faith, Love, and HOPE, which are taught here at St. Mary’s Colgan!

A big thank you is in order for all the staff and administration of our schools who helped work so hard all these months during the school shut-down phase and in planning for this new school year!

Let us all stay positive and offer hopeful witness to our young people amidst all our challenges, knowing that Christ Jesus has won for us the race of redemption and is awaiting all of us to cross that finish line of victory in His glory!

WELCOME

Dennis Burke, Director of School Advancement Welcome Back, Panther Fans!

In my letter for the Booster Club program, I usually start with the list of accomplishments our student/athletes achieved the previous year, but with our sport seasons ending so abruptly this past spring, I want to say a few words about the return of athletics to SMC. Without a doubt, the pandemic has required us to rethink and make changes to our athletics. Even as I write this, conferences and teams are considering postponing or delaying competition. Until we hear differently, we will push forward to the start of athletics in a few short weeks. I know our athletes are ready, and we will do everything we can to be prepared as well. For those of you who will be coming to our athletic competitions, there will be some additional requirements for you as spectators. Our coaches will have additional responsibilities in keeping our athletes safe with increased sanitizing procedures and health policies.

No matter the challenges, we look forward to another year of Panther athletics. Thank you for your continued support of such a vital part of our students’ education.

Wes Streeter, SMC Principal It is with great excitement and hope that I write this message to our Panther fans! Going into my 2nd year as principal, I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you to our parents, priests, alumni, teachers, staff and coaches for the sacrifices that you make for our kids. Thank you to our amazing Booster Club. They go above and beyond to help support our school system. As a school, we appreciate all you do yearround to support Colgan Athletics.

Last year was an interesting year for sports. Congratulations to our Panther athletes who made it to state and I’m sorry to our spring athletes who didn’t get that opportunity to compete. I have no doubt another banner or two would have been hung in the Fieldhouse. As the next school year begins we hope and pray that we start and end strong.

It is Colgan’s Faith, Excellence and Tradition that is the visible staple of our school. Let us continue to show our positive impact on the world as we prepare for activities. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for us! As Father Labenz would say, “LET’S GO”!!

OUR CATHOLIC TRADITION

Hello SMC Family, I want to start by stating what a privilege and a blessing it is to be the new athletic director and a social studies teacher at St Mary's Colgan.

After playing football at Hutchinson CC, I come to SMC, graduating from Pittsburg State University and spending the last four years at Seneca High School in Seneca, Missouri, coaching track, football, and basketball. During that time, I also completed my Master's program at Emporia State University in Educational Leadership.

Growing up in Baxter Springs, I am aware of the golden standard of excellence in faith, academics, and athletics that SMC student-athletes and coaches strive to meet. Throughout my athletic experiences at each level, I've been fortunate to be surrounded by great coaches and great leaders in the field of education. I am excited to continue that with the experienced and intentional personnel at SMC. As we step into a new year of academics and athletics, I am eager to witness firsthand the excellence, as mentioned above, lived out by our athletes and fans in the many arenas of competition. Our athletes have worked hard, our coaches have prepared well, and our families and community have rallied in support. We are ready for the new year of competition.

Although I am a new face at SMC, I have quickly realized how blessed we are to have the coaches, players, families, faculty, and Booster Club. To everyone that supports SMC student-athletes and programs, we want to extend a sincere and unequivocal "Thank you." The time and resources dedicated to putting programs in place to help our studentathletes thrive in their faith and their competitive environment do not go unnoticed or unappreciated. These support systems make SMC athletics and activities a meaningful and character-building experience in our student-athletes' lives.

The excitement is building, and we are ready to see the crowds of Colgan Blue gathering in support of our athletic teams as they prepare to take on the challenges set before them.

My hope for our coaches, athletes, and families is that their faith and relationships with one another are cultivated through their season experiences. Good luck to all of our coaches and athletes as they represent SMC! Go Panthers!

Cathy Oplotnik Head Coach

Coach Oplotnik enters her 16th season as the Panthers head volleyball coach.

Oplotnik guided the Panthers to first place in the CNC the past three seasons and has taken her teams to the State tournament eight times in her career, including finishing fourth at state in 2018 and third at state in 2015. Also, the Panthers were awarded with the class 2A Program of the year in 2015. Her overall record at SMC is 411-189 entering the 2020 season. A three sport athlete at Girard High School, she went on to play basketball at Ft. Scott Community College prior to graduating from Pittsburg State University. Coach Oplotnik currently teaches Junior High and High School PE and Junior High Science. In addition, she serves as the head track and field coach at SMC.

Kelsey Leech Assistant Coach

This will be the first year for Leech as an assistant coach for the Panther's Volleyball team. She was a two-sport athlete at Parsons High School playing varsity volleyball and basketball. After High school Leech attended Pittsburg State University and earned her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.

She started her early career at St. Patrick’s in Parsons, KS, but later joined SMC Panthers as a third grade teacher and Volleyball Coach.

Grace VanBecelaere Assistant Coach

VanBecelaere begins her first season as an assistant volleyball coach for the Panthers. She graduated from Colgan in 2017, playing volleyball all four years under the direction of Coach Oplotnik. VanBecelaere was on the 2015 Colgan volleyball team that finished 3rd in the State Tournament. She continued her volleyball career at Butler Community College. VanBecelaere has spent the last 2 years coaching club volleyball for Pittsburg Star Aquila and is currently in school studying Occupational Therapy.

Head Coach Offensive Coordinator, Quarterbacks and Running Backs Coach Seematter begins his fourth season as the Head Coach of the Panthers. The Panthers have amassed a 26-10 record in his three seasons as head coach. He graduated from Royal Valley High School in Hoyt, Kansas, and received a degree in Secondary Education from Kansas State University. He served as the Defensive Coordinator at Halstead High School prior to coming to Colgan. Coach Seematter and his wife, Kaylyn, were married earlier this summer.

WAYNE CICHON

FOOTBALL Assistant Coach

Defensive Coordinator, Running Backs & Linebackers Coach Cichon enters his 35th season as a defensive coordinator and 41st year coaching football. Coach Cichon also was an assistant coach for six years at Bishop Miege before coming to SMC in 1983. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a BS degree in Mathematics and MS degrees in Physical Education and Administration. Coach Cichon and his wife Kathy have three children: Tracy Evans, Scott Cichon and Molly Cichon, all are Colgan graduates.

Assistant Coach

Wide Recievers & Defensive Backs Coach Dellasega is entering his first season coaching the Panthers. After graduating from SMC in 2003 he played football for Pittsburg State, graduating in 2007. Since then, Coach Dellasega has lived in a few different spots around the country before coming home in 2018 where he now works for the family business, US Awards.

Assistant Coach

Offensive Line & Defensive Line Coach Caskey is entering his first season coaching Colgan Panther football and works with the offensive line and defensive line. Coach Caskey played football at Friends University in Wichita, KS from 1996-98 and has coached many youth sports throughout the Pittsburg community for over 10 years.

He is a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He holds degrees in business management and marketing and is employed as a Pricing Analyst at Pitt Plastics. He and his wife Miranda have four daughters - Brooklyn, Haylee, Leah, and Aubri -who are all students at SMC.

HUNTER KNOX

Assistant Coach

Running Backs & Defensive Backs Coach Knox is entering his first year coaching Colgan Panther football. After graduating from high school in Glen Rose, TX, he earned an undergraduate degree in English from the University of Texas and graduate degrees from the University of Arizona and Pittsburg State University. This will be Coach Knox's third year teaching English at Colgan, where he will also be helping to coach girl's basketball and baseball. He lives near Cherokee, KS, with his wife, Erin.

Virgil Winn

General Manager

For the 32nd season, Virgil will assist this year’s Panther football team. Coach Winn’s multiple duties range from head statistician to quarter-eagles coach. Coach Winn has been involved in all of the athletic programs at SMC for many years. His contributions to the programs are invaluable and the impact that he has had on the lives of the student athletes is immeasurable.

CROSS COUNTRY SCOTT CICHON Head Coach

Coach Cichon serves as cross country coach in its fourth year at St. Mary’s Colgan. Coach Cichon is an SMC alum and received a BSED degree in Mathematics from Pittsburg State University. He played basketball while attending PSU. Coach Cichon also serves as the boy’s assistant basketball coach and assistant track and field coach. A dedicated runner himself, he has qualified and ran in the Boston Marathon the past ten years.

BRANDON NGO Assistant Coach Brandon Ngo is serving as cross country assistant coach for his third season.

Coach Ngo is an SMC alum and is currently studying Graphic Communications and Computer Information Systems at Pittsburg State University.

Kim Scripsick Assistant Coach

Brian O'Neill Head Coach

Coach O'Neill is honored to be head coach for the Panther Girls Golf team for a second season. The Panthers had a very successful season last year while placing in the top three in most regular season tournaments and placing 5th at State (tied for 4th).

Previously, he was head golf coach at Riverton High School for five years and Junior Varsity baseball coach at Bonner Springs High School for four years. He also served as assistant softball coach at Southeast High School during his student teaching semester. He played golf and football during his high school years in Fredonia, Kansas, and was very active in the Boy Scouts, earning the highest rank of Eagle Scout.

Coach Scripsick begins her second season as an assistant coach for the Panther Girls Golf team.

Scripsick was part of a three year state championship golf team in Columbus during high school. She is excited to continue to share her love of the game with our lady Panthers.

She is currently the Stewardship and Virtus Coordinator for Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

This is his second year at SMC, and his eleventh year teaching Technology. He is proud to be part of the Panther family!
