ABOUT:
Walker Martz's unbalanced, off-kilter Broken Dance is a rhythmic feast for the eyes and ears, conjuring up an irregular dance for the player that serves as a great introduction to the world of multi-percussion solos!
FROM THE COMPOSER:
Broken Dance is based on a 2+3 rhythmic pattern that evolves throughout the piece. It is meant to evoke the image of a solo dancer performing unbalanced, off-kilter choreography. The piece starts with an additive pattern that grows, shifts, and lurches until even the performer seems to lose control over the piece, ending with a bold restatement of the initial theme.
PERFORMANCE NOTES:
This piece can be played with brushes and/or rute sticks - amplification is therefore recommended. Choose an implement that lets each of the instruments in the setup speak clearly. If using rute sticks, a brush is required for stirring the tambourine at measure 80 onward. You may choose to use a brush specifically for these moments and then stick with rute sticks for the remainder of the piece, or you may switch to brushes from measure 79 to the end.
Use a small bell that can be easily picked up and rung, or mounted in such a way that it rings when struck. The bell is intended as a "background" texture and should be allowed to ring freely, perhaps even letting the beater inside strike more than once.
