With its introspective lyricism and joyful vitality, Andrew W. Sharrock's stunning piece for tuba-euphonium ensemble evokes the majestic beauty of Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, New Hampshire!

FROM THE COMPOSER:

This piece is my ode to the beauty and awe of Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. In the summer of 2016, I worked as the aquatics director for Camp Wanocksett, which was nestled on the northern shore of Thorndike Pond and directly in the shadow of Mount Monadnock. The program director, knowing I was a music education major, asked if I would perform something on trumpet at our end of week campfires. I took this as a challenge to write a new unaccompanied trumpet piece each week.

“Sunset” is derived from the first piece I composed for this project. I sought to evoke the beauty of the landscape I found myself in, juxtaposed with the rugged, New Englander personalities I found myself surrounded by. This piece was scored for Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble in 2017 and premiered by Dr. David Porter and the George Mason University Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble in November of 2019.
