Cody Myre's Five Circles in a Line is a call to the rhythmically driven music of his childhood and an homage to its smooth technicality. Its limited instrumentation, medium length, and moderate difficulty make it perfect for any young percussion quartet seeking a challenge to their independence and energy!

FROM THE COMPOSER:

Drumming has always fascinated me. As a musician, I have always felt a pull toward rhythm as a driving factor in my music, and most frequently use it as a tool for building, releasing, and expanding my works. This is logical; I grew up listening to hair metal, thrash, and progressive metal, then moved on to black metal, technical death, and, even further on, rap and abstract hip-hop. These all have in common that they are rhythmically and energetically motivated. The factor that decides these genres isnโ€™t their tonality, their progression, or (in most cases) their instrumentation, but in their energy and the way that they channel that energy to drive forward through their usage of rhythm.

Within drumming lies a frequently used technique called Linear Drumming, which is defined as a technique by which a drummer only strikes one note on any given beat. This style of drumming has a totally unique sound and was the primary inspiration for Five Circles in a Line. When, at the Midwest Clinic in 2021, Geritt Davenport asked me to write a quartet for his studio, I couldnโ€™t resist. Five Circles was born at that moment, and I knew the concept immediately. It begins with a simple pointal motif in one drum, but as the work goes on the texture expands and fills until its breaking point, where the group vamps on the same four-bar phrase until its thrilling conclusion!
