Translated as "The Call of the Void", L'appel du vide contemplates the human tendency to ponder the macabre What ifs in life. Utilizing nondiatonic scales and half-step dissonance, this work is hauntingly reflective and sure to inspire introspection in all who hear it!

FROM THE COMPOSER: L'appel du vide (The call of the void) is an expression that means something like “the desire to jump from high places” (like a cliff, for example). That is reflected in the composition in question from the use of minor non-diatonic scales, some used by Shostakovich. There are two ostinati under melodic counterpoints whose pitch repositories differ from one another predominantly by a semitone of one of the notes.
