You may have heard people talking about a "lemon car" over the last month or so. An Australian car owner wrote a rap and made a music video about problems with his car titled "I made a mistake I bought a lemon", which went viral on social media, causing a public relations headache for the car manufacturer. From the moment he was given the keys to his new car, the owner had nothing but problems with it, including it repeatedly going into safe mode for no reason, the windscreen wipers getting activated on its own, a burning smell coming from the inside of the car, the steering wheel constantly pulling to the left, and sudden power outage of the car.

In other major vehicle-related news in February, a well-known German manufacturer of automotive parts submitted a recall notice to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) due to faulty airbag sensors and promised to carry out a global recall that could affect as many as five million vehicles from six different brands. While the repercussions of the recall by a wellknown Japanese airbag manufacturer could still be felt, this recall by the German manufacturer will have

another significant impact on vehicle owners around the world.

The success of the automotive industry has fueled the rapid rise of the automotive electronics industry.

However, the repeated car-related safety and quality issues have fixed the world's attention on the increasing proportion of the cost of cars accounted for automotive electronics.

Undoubtedly, as technology advances, more safety worries follow. How should we guarantee the quality of the automotive electronic products to protect the safety of the consumers and prevent the good name of the car brands to be dragged through the mud of quality scandals? CLOSER recently interviewed the experts of the automotive electronic component, electromagnetic compatibility and functional safety of TĂœV Rheinland, who analyze common problems they have encountered during their many years of testing and certification, and discuss effective ways to improve the reliability of automotive electronics and prevent headaches for consumers.

Method 1 Be sure to meet relevant standards in the product development stage An automotive cable harness company that produces connecting wires for hazardous vehicles (such as those carrying flammable or combustible materials) submitted their sample for European ADR certification for the first time. The company had experience of exporting to overseas markets. However, the dimensions and structure of the sample did not meet standard requirements. The sample was therefore returned for further modifications.

Expert's tip: The dimensions and structure of a product are the first things to think about in the design stage.

If those standards are not met, the entire design of the product will need to start from scratch all over again. This obviously increases extra time and financial costs for the company. This becomes even more of an issue if the lead time is tight. Therefore companies should research the relevant standard requirements and incorporate them into their product design from the earliest phase of product development to get the future production and sales off to a good start.

Method 2 Focus on the quality of the raw materials The company in question produces cable harness tapes for wrapping and protecting wires. The OEM had strict product requirements and required the supplier's product to withstand the heat to high temperatures for up to 3,000 hours without producing peculiar smells, while maintaining viscidity. But the company apparently did not pay enough attention to this requirement, or simply assumed that their product would be able to pass the test. In the end it took four retests following product redesigns to satisfy the requirements above.

Another case concerns double breakers.

The OEM wanted to check whether the force required to operate the switch changed after environmental testing beginning at 85℃ for 5 hours, followed by a reduction of 2℃ per minute down to --40°C. The said process was to be repeated every 4 hours. After 100 or 200 cycles, the spring was tested for failures due to fatigue. The purpose of the testing was to assess the spring design and quality of the raw materials.

Expert's tip: Manufacturers of international brands often draw on the successful experience of others and absorb elements from a range of international standards to form their own company standards. Placing stringent quality requirements on raw materials is a major challenge.

Therefore, electronic component suppliers need to take their time when selecting raw materials and conduct preliminary tests to avoid the additional time and costs associated with repeated retesting, as in the case above.

Method 3 Reduce interference and radiation intensity Because electronic components accounted for a relatively small part of older vehicles, there were very few issues with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). But as the proportion of electronic parts in vehicles has soared, EMC has become an urgent problem in need of a solution.

While driving a new model of car fitted with an MCU fuel control unit along a residential street, the car automatically turned itself off.

After measuring the electromagnetic environment in the area, it was found that the signal from an illegal civilian radio transmitter had coupled with the wire connected to the MCU, causing the processor to stop working.

Expert's tip: Although the above case did not lead to any injuries, the problem of electromagnetic interference poses a significant safety risk to vehicle occupants. At the same time, it once again proves the importance of product radiated immunity testing.

Taking radiated emissions as an example, TÜV Rheinland recommends that companies use the following criteria: Sources of interference: Reduce the capacity of the noise source (such as an oscillator, digital circuit, power converter or data bus), or reduce the signal conversion rate, switched current or operating frequency.

Transmission: Reduce the coupling and energy conduction of circuit boards (improve routing technology, make sure grounding line is not too long, etc.) and improve connector position radio frequency suppression to achieve targets.

Grounding: Good grounding is the most important way to reduce radiation emissions. How to ensure an almost completely flat surface is a problem circuit designers need to consider.

Method 4 Enhance the interference immunity of electronic devices During road testing of a high-end saloon car before it went on the market, everything seemed to be normal at first. However, the dashboard instruments and the body control module was seriously affected when the examiner turned on the radio, of which the signals have caused the instrument failure.

Expert's tip: In this case, it was found that the vehicle's electronics caused mutual interference, rendering them ineffective. This illustrates the importance of interference immunity for electronic devices. For radiated immunity, for example, TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland recommends that companies improve protection via electromagnetic shielding: for frequencies above 100 kHz, a good conductive material (copper, aluminum, steel, etc.) will provide sound shielding effectiveness, while seams and openings should have <1/20 frequency wavelengths to achieve 20 dB of shielding effectiveness. Avoid using square covers to prevent internal resonance.

Method 5 Do not ignore the functional safety of automotive electronic systems As more and more complex electrical, electronic systems and programmable electronic systems are implemented for safety-related vehicle functions, a failure can have serious consequences for vehicle occupants and pedestrians.

Safety design flaws in automotive electronic systems not only endanger personal safety but can inflict huge economic losses on companies due to resulting recalls. System reliability issues with security-related functions have caused widespread public concern.

ISO 26262 is a widely recognized international standard for functional safety, which provides specifications on how to achieve functional safety from a technical standpoint.

The scope of application of ISO 26262 is quite extensive from battery management systems of electric cars, vehicle control units to traditional vehicle chassis control as well as anti-lock braking systems etc.

Domestic OEMs are closing in on overseas brands, as they demand ISO 26262 standards in product development and component purchasing. However, the experts from TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland still find a range of problems in products of various companies, when the functional safety evaluations were carried out.

Tips for preemptive measures are listed as follows:

Common Problems and Expert Tips Inappropriate diagnostic measures: It is recommended that companies carry out adequate product design analysis before implementing diagnostic measures so as to identify failure risks in products and safety-related functions as well as advantages and disadvantages of diagnostic measures (such as diagnostic coverage, the degree of difficulty of implementation, time required, etc.), before making their selection.

Documenting irregularities: When preparing documents, it is recommended that companies carry out internal checks and allow technicians not involved in projects to proofread documents to see if they can understand their intended meaning.

Inconsistent descriptions of the same thing across multiple documents: It is recommended that companies immediately communicate changes made to documents to the entire project group.

Inexperienced engineers: It is recommended that engineers undergo comprehensive functional safety training.

Not knowing how to prove tool reliability: TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland provides a list of the appropriate requirements and carries out part-by-part analysis.

Poor English translations: It is recommended that companies use standard terminology and carry out internal proofreading.

Failing to follow change processes when making changes: Every change in the design development phase needs to comply with the change process in safety plans. For example, it is necessary to carry out change impact analyses and corresponding tests. If the product requires functional safety certification, it is necessary to submit relevant documents related to the change to the certification body (e.g. TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland).

Currently, 70% of vehicle innovations are in the area of automotive electronic products.

The cost of electronic products as a proportion of the cost of the whole vehicle has already increased significantly from 2% in the 1970s to around 25% today, and this trend looks set to continue. For electronic component suppliers, it is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of products in order to win the trust of the market, which is a cornerstone of sustainable development.

"We're not necessarily the best, but we strive to achieve perfection in everything we do." This is how Chris Zou, Vice President of Solar/Fuel Cell Technology Services at TÜV Rheinland Greater China, described the company which he has worked for over a decade when we met for the first time.

Much like Apple, TÜV Rheinland, which arrived in China in 1989, is in hot pursuit of perfection. From its independent and impartial attitude, its rigorous checks on product quality, right down to the minimalist design of its website, the company's attention to detail and work ethic can be detected in everything it does. As a leading provider of testing and certification

services for PV modules and components, the company has witnessed repeated ups and downs in China's PV industry in the 13 years from 2003 to the present.

As the curtain fell on the conference in the Paris suburbs at the end of 2015, the development of new energy industries once again became the focus of heated debate. According to Chris Zou, as a third-party testing organization, TÜV Rheinland has devised two solutions to fight global warming: First, the traditional standards are to be refined and improved, while the technology shall be upgraded to provide a complete service to new-energy industries— particularly the PV industry and its application—which is what the company has always done. Second, the approach of evaluations and measurements of greenhouse gas emissions from enterprises shall be improved.

In the case of complimentary aquaculture and PV projects, many people fail to consider the living environment of the fish in the initial design.

But power plants produce a lot of dust over time as rain erodes them, resulting in deposits in the water which endangers the survival of the fish. However, the said factor is not taken into consideration. Nor are the fishery experts consulted prior to the construction of power stations.

As for how the company will provide a complete service to new-energy industries—particularly the PV industry—Chris presents the whole process of PV power plants from their preliminary design to later transactions as an example to provide an insight into TÜV Rheinland's role as a thirdparty tester.

Diversifying Power Plant Development and Formulating Industry Standards PV power plants are becoming more diverse, but there are no existing systems to serve as a reference nor can one learn from the case studies from overseas. The design of diversified PV power plants are based on surface power stations with limited additional modifications. The result is a sorely inadequate design. To local governments or investors, a lake not used for cultivation can be used to build a power plant as a capital investment project to bring in business. Investment of the power plants is the sole concern, whereas the environmental issues were forgotten.

For TÜV Rheinland, this is a new problem. Chris explains that his company has been in discussions with EPC, design institutes and other organizations about setting standards for these types of power plant projects. This is an attempt to regulate standards in the design stage prior to the construction of the power plant. If there are no uniform standards, the security, performance and environmental impact of power stations will be difficult to improve.

"I hope that when people undertake new projects they will consider the risk factors," Chris says. "We have also been involved in efforts to find and construct a reference system for diverse plant design, to build internal standards and share them with the industry. This will provide owners and developers with professional reference points in areas such as project development and material selection."

Highlighting Plant Performance Issues and Doing Technical Due Diligence to Check Power Plant Quality Following reform of the electricity market, market development and issues with limits on electricity, power plant owners are growing more and more interested in performance and quality. This is because performance and quality are closely related to income margins. Given that PV electricity production is intermittent, uncertain and dependent on weather conditions, the site selection, design, assessment and construction can all affect the ROI of a plant.

TÜV Rheinland has provided multistage quality management and risk control services to PV power plants around the world with a total output of more than 12GW. In addition to power plant preliminary construction assessments and planning, as well as supplier and product auditing, TÜV Rheinland carries out realtime tracking and checks, and also supervises installations. TÜV Rheinland can also carry out final inspections and certification of power stations which includes the components, PV supports, cables, energy storage systems and loads, to control quality and reduce risks.

He continues, "Product quality control requires very strict technical principles and complete independence." To certify a factory, for example, we not

only check the plant, but also take samples to test in the lab. Only when all the appropriate procedures have been followed, will we certify a new factory. That is the process. Every third-party tester has their own way of doing things, and some will just check a plant without doing any tests. We're much stricter than that. " When testing products, TÜV Rheinland is often asked, "Since the panels are all made of the same materials which have been tested in a laboratory, why does it have to involve the production processes?"

At the mention of testing components, Chris points out, "You could say that TÜV Rheinland is the strictest."

Industry requirements urge us to continually research, transform and innovate Closer: When you first entered the e-commerce field, what kind of environment was TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland facing?

Peter Chen: TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland already had a foundation, plus, we entered the market very early. Our original goal was to build a credit platform for e-commerce to screen for better suppliers. But in 2009, e-commerce wasn't as strong as it is now. Only GMC was interested in trying out a new method to advance market expansion.

Currently the biggest issue in China is trust so the demand for e-commerce auditing is increasingly prominent.

Closer: What do you expect future trends in e-commerce to look like?

Peter Chen: From my point of view, it seems that the credit market in China is experiencing a historic shift. Trust is currently divided into two levels: first, on the individual level, which we don't get particularly involved with, this is usually state-controlled. The second level is corporate credit, which can be further divided into two areas, one being trust in legality. In the past few years we've covered this quite well, and the future market potential is quite substantial. The other area is the tracing service which we are currently preparing and particularly want to emphasize. For auditing the various areas of legality, there is actually a type of static audit.

After we go to perform the on-site audit, we conclude whether or not the enterprise is legal and whether or not the system is intact at that point. A conclusion is then drawn based on the

past performance. But the most highend service is the dynamic auditing of products. We fully integrate the dynamic and static, which is the supply chain traceability service we are currently pushing. This is the only primary approach we can use to solve China's credit problem. Right now the market is at its most chaotic. We must help the market to improve for the better with our solutions. For us, this means that our opportunities will increase.

Closer: TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland's e-commerce services are constantly launching new services? What facilitates these innovations?

Peter Chen: The industry requirements push us to constantly research, transform, and innovate. In the past decade of e-commerce, price has become transparent, which has changed the industry entirely. From my point of view, this is a positive trend.

The entire market needs re-balancing, and the tracing service and second-party auditing service serves as a good turning point. In the future, e-commerce will transit from price transparency to value transparency. Some online products have become more expensive than their counterparts, sometimes by a significant amount, but the industry has lacked the necessary tools to authenticate the value of these products.

With our core-tool tracing service and future tracing system, which we call our product ID system, every product is given a unique QR code. This code records all processing credit, raw materials, distribution processes, and every product is assigned a unique ID; Even products that are of the same make would be assigned different ID, should they come from different assembly lines, be produced at a different time or with different batch of raw materials. The information from the tracing system will use graphics, videos, and reports, as well as collective endorsements from TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland and other partners', and even including the some local governments, to provide proof of the product's value.

In regards to the future age of value transparency, we estimate that we still need 3-5 years. Our whole team has invested a lot into our tracing service.

Trust is the foundation of business Closer: What core practices has TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland engaged in when working with 1688?

Peter Chen: 1688 is currently China's largest domestic trading platform, and is currently also involved in some international trade.

This platform has relatively complete certification with a strict auditing threshold. First we inspected the factory. The first step really reflects

the difference. An enterprise may have several competitors, but with in-depth factory inspection, other buyers can really understand the differences as they are indicated by our platform.

For business in general, I personally believe that trust is the foundation of all business activities. Sellers present themselves for the sake of gaining the trust of buyers. In our social management sphere, there is a concept of transparency within sustainable development. That is to say, the more transparent an enterprise is, the more stakeholders are likely to trust it, and the more sustainable the enterprise will become.

Is the future a desert or an oasis?

Closer: Globalization and Internet technology have made e-commerce rapidly climb to the forefront of the 21st century. What do you expect for TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland in the field of e-commerce in the future?

Peter Chen: For e-commerce, price is extremely important. In the future, TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland, along with our partners and peers, will all face the possible issue of service price and certification price facing a sharp decline.

Creating an Internet-savvy Team Closer: How do you regard your competitors in this field?

Peter Chen: I don't really see them as our competitors. We are currently partners with Internet giants such as Alibaba, Tencent, etc. What they saw in us is that our team has an Internetoriented mindset. Of all the essential factors, people are the most important one. I'm proud to say that our sales teams and operation teams all live by this mantra. The only way to serve someone is to ensure that one's values and beliefs align with theirs. It is only in this way that our philosophy and method of operation can align with these moguls.

And now, though many of our peers have a preliminary understanding, most still maintain a traditional certification service approach to e-commerce.

For example, Google collaborated with one of our peers for 2 years, but after finding the arrangement rather unpleasant, they came to us. This is because Google can see that we think differently about e-commerce,

including our external partners, internal organization, operational framework, and our higher-thanindustry-standard foundation of communication as a means of certification. Or one could say that it is a combination of certification and e-commerce. So in the future, we will have a lot of room for collaboration with Google.

Closer: Do you deliver your and philosophy to your team?

Peter Chen: Right now, the whole team has a customer-oriented mindset.

We don't just think about things from the point of view of TĂ&#x153;V Rheinland, but rather we always see things from the point of view of the customer.

Closer: Could a decline in prices normalize relations?

Peter Chen: Actually, this puts the operational strength of each of our structures to the test and ensures we operate to the best of our extent. Future platforms will be extremely powerful, and will have a serious impact on price control. Only research and new products can change this. Make sure that you've built a strong foundation and a strong framework as this is the only way it will be able to continue to stand in the future. Otherwise, we will face a desert rather than an oasis.

All innovations and adjustments must achieve a result. This is the customer's point of view. If the service can't help the customer or user increase its value, the service doesn't have value; and even if such a service could continue to exist, its life expectancy would be incredibly short-lived.

Keen Home: Smart Vent Keen Home’s smart air purifier, Smart Vent, detects and regulates ambient temperature, with individual adjustments for the temperature in each room. Its core technology lies in its ability to understand the situation of each room in the house and compile its user profiles. Thus, air conditioning is automatically turned on or off according to user habits for effective allocation of air circulation indoors. The home no longer has the problem of uneven air conditioning. Much like some hovering, over-sized spider, the Octocopter heads for the viaduct in Bielefeld-Schildesche. A small group of people watch from the ground, their gaze fixed on the flying object. The Octocopter, however, only has camera eyes for its target. It flies along the pre-stressed concrete bridges in search of cracks, flacking and any spots which are moist or otherwise visually conspicuous. One of the observers holds a monitor in his hands that shows what the drone’s sensors detect. Once it has flowed around the arches of the bridges several times, it lands gently in the grass. Great work! Everyone is happy with the results of the trial aerial inspection. It is part of a research and development project being carried out by TÜV Rheinland for the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt).

The aim is to run a feasibility study to demonstrate the potential of drones in detecting and assessing damage on bridge. “We want to find out whether multicopters are a suitable tool for carrying out inspection work on bridges”, says Martin Sperber. “At the same time, TÜV Rheinland Industrial Services innovation management is looking at the technical aspects and cost-efficiency of various potential services for such facilities as photovoltaic, biogas and wind power plants.” The Head of Division Key Account Aviation/Airports with TÜV Rheinland sees great potential in the development of drones.

At the same time, customers benefit from the fact that the standstill period for bridges and other facilities is reduced to a minimum. “Motorists are pleased to hear that a freeway bridge is not going to be closed for inspection but will be monitored by a drone instead,” adds the expert, who was appointed chairman of the USA standards committee for aviation and aerospace at the German Institute for Standardization (DIN). Here he is involved with issues relating to the standardization of unmanned aviation. This is important in terms of safety and transparency, in relation to both the devices themselves and the services they are designed to provide. It’s no easy business.

The situation regarding approvals and insurance is in itself riddled with uncertainties to say the least, due to the fact that different regulations apply from one state to the next.

Groundbreaking steps While the legal aspects are being examined, TÜV Rheinland is involved in testing the drone systems in use. The focus

is on such elements as the so-called flight controller, which is responsible for stable flight mechanics in the multicopter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There has to be a minimum level of fail-safety for a drone to fly safely,â&#x20AC;? says Martin Sperber.

Innovation management uses entirely new kinds of measurement sensors.

Initial tests at the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems indicate that novel sensors can be used to make electroluminescence measurements by daylight. This is a huge advantage, particularly when it comes to inspecting photovoltaic plants. As far as how and in which areas drones can be put to use in the service sector, only the future will tell.

One thing is certain, however: they are capable of much more than just taking nice birdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s-eye view photographs.

In China, starting from September 1st, 2015, the Chinese General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) will begin enforcing mandatory 3C product certification for car seats. 3C certification will determine whether or not products are allowed on store shelves, and unaccredited car seats won't be manufactured, marketed,

imported, or used in any other business operations.

AQSIQ announced that child car seats will undergo the following 3C inspection measures: static testing, dynamic testing, combustion testing, and toxicity testing. Only car seats passing these four tests will be able to obtain 3C accreditation. Products with 3C certification have unique random codes, with each code corresponding to the factory and product. Consumers can use these codes at national quality certification centers for access to related information.

Certain aspects that are given attention include materials and craftsmanship, quality and comfort levels, safety belt fastener durability, checking for barbs protruding from the plastic, checking fabric for breathe-ability, allowing children to try them out, checking safety belt design, checking to see whether or not it is easy to adjust etc., and asking the children who are testing them to see if they are experiencing any feelings of discomfort.

Dark-colored plastic materials that smell similar to asphalt or tires maybe contain polycyclic armotic hydrocarbons (PAH: A banned carcinogen which can cause cancer from contact and is often used in dyes and plasticizers). Examples: Azo dyes (AZO: A banned allergen and carcinogen), Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP: A banned substance that can affect reproductive system development), etc., are all substances that are impossible to identify with the naked eye.

Select safe and environmental friendly materials Car seats touch a large surface of a child's skin, so its safety is a matter of the child's health. The scope of this filter is 0.3-1 microns which includes PM2.5. It is the technology of the day, but its mesh filter needs to be replaced regularly (or it may breed organisms).

According to British BSEN specifications, only filters that can filter particles of 1 microns in diameter with a filtration efficiency above 85% are HEPA filters (H10 standard, BSEN1822). The most advanced HEPA filters, at grade H14, can filter particles with diameters 0.3 microns or larger with a filtration efficiency higher than 99.9% (BSEN1822).

Practical Suggestion Ask about the general purpose and recommended time to replace the mesh for the HEPA filter.

These are the largest hidden costs that need to be considered when using an air purifier. In general, the more heavily polluted a place is, the shorter the time to replace the mesh. Refer to the manual for suggestions on replacements.

Energise Workshop: Experts Discuss Shared Infrastructures for Smart Grids in Europe The second Energise workshop was held by TÜV Rheinland on 3rd and 4th March 2016 in Berlin. The workshop for high-level stakeholders from the European telecommunications and energy sector is part of the Energise study which has been conducted by TÜV Rheinland since the beginning of 2015 on behalf of the European Commission. It focuses on whether the EU states should use the existing infrastructures of telecommunications companies or whether new networks should be set up when expanding smart grids. As part of the second stakeholder dialogue within the Energise project, TÜV Rheinland also presented the current results from the first project year.

Among the First to Receive Korean RRA Recognition TÜV Rheinland has been granted accreditation by Korea’s National Radio Research Agency (RRA) to test and certify IT and multimedia equipment to the recently enacted KN32/ KN35 standards.

TÜV Rheinland is one of the first Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories to receive KN32/KN35 recognition in the United States. This recognition, from Korea RRA, applies to those products scheduled for testing after January 1 2016; products which already been tested and approved in 2015 under KN22/KN24 will not require additional testing.

Any new audio, IT, and multimedia products bound for the Korean market will need to meet the new standards, as KN22, KN24, KN15 and KN20 will be invalid after December 31, 2015. However, products certified to the old standards will still be market eligible through 2017.

Saudi Arabia

SaudiTelecom Received ISO 9000 Certificate The Saudi Telecom Company (STC) successfully passed the ISO 9001: 2008 audit conducted by TÜV Rheinland. The scope of the certification covered "Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Telecom Services to STC Customers". As of now, the certification is only limited to head office and central region in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The scope will be extended to other regions in the coming years.

Muhammad Asif, CEO of TÜV Rheinland Arabia handed over the certificate to Dr. Khaled H. Biyari, Group CEO of STC in a ceremony held in Riyadh at STC headquarters.

Also present in the ceremony were Muhammad Nadeem, General Manager Business Stream Systems at TÜV Rheinland Arabia and other senior member of STC management.

STC is the largest telecommunication services provider in the Middle East & North Africa. It is the leading operator within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and its international presence extends to nine countries.

66 Inspectors for One Exciting Major Project TÜV Rheinland Arabia executed a successful inspection project in a shutdown of an oil refinery plant in Saudi Arabia.

Rabigh Refining & Petrochemical Company appointed TÜV Rheinland Arabia LLC to provide inspection services for the shutdown of an oil refinery plant in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia.

In order to provide API, QA/QC and NTD inspections of all equipment and piping throughout the entire plant, 66 highly specialized inspectors from various countries like India, Malaysia, Egypt, Pakistan, Sudan, USA and the UK were needed.

The services are being performed on the Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical Company (PRC) plant premises, at port facilities and occasionally fabrication complexes. TÜV Rheinland is mainly responsible for on-site work relating to shutdown inspections and ASME/API/NACE code compliance on static equipment like pressure equipment, heaters, boilers, storage tanks or piping.

It was a major challenge to coordinate all the inspectors from all over the world traveling to Saudi Arabia during this short timeframe”, says Project Leader Waqas Munawar. “The successful execution of this project was a team effort, which enables TÜV Rheinland Arabia to have a big pool of specialized API inspectors, and can now provide other affiliates with CVs if they win a similar project.”
