Managing your Work Life Balance:
Self Assessment Tool
“ Balance is not something you find, it is something you create. ” Jana Kingsford.
Self-assessment tool
Life is very busy these days. Giving some attention to your work life balance at di erent intervals can help you to get the most out of it. The Wheel of Life is a simple diagram that helps you to focus on your current satisfaction levels across 8 areas of your life from Zero (centre of the wheel) to 10 (perimeter of the wheel).
Step 1
Draw along the curved line in each of the 8 Areas, at the point where it meets the relevant satisfaction score (0 -10).
Step 2
Then draw a line to connect each of the sections around the full wheel to form an inner wheel.
Step 3
This inner wheel represents your current “Wheel of Life”. If it were a real wheel on a car or bicycle – how bumpy a ride would it be?
Step 4
Remember: The aim is not about getting 10 in each section, but about trying to get a smoother journey across the elements of your life.
Note:
This field is left for you to complete with any additional relevant area of your life that you would like to include. For example Fitness, Community, Clubs or Association, etc.
Additional help
If you found this exercise useful, it may be a good idea to check in every few months on your Wheel of Life. As circumstances and demands change, you may find that the Wheel of Life exercise could help you to re- balance!
The Health, Wellbeing and EAP (HWEAP) Service has a broad range of support and advice leaflets that may help in assessing some of the everyday challenges of maintaining your work life balance. These are available in the HWEAP section of the Tusla hub or by contacting eap@tusla.ie.
Make time for self-care
Maintain a healthy diet
This is important for both physical and mental health. Eat a balanced diet regularly, with plenty of water, fruit and vegetables.
Take regular exercise
Being physically active helps reduce stress, boosts your energy levels and can have a positive effect on your mood.
Try to manage your stress
Become aware of your stressors, try to slow down, breathe deeply and talk about your problems.
Develop good sleeping habits
A good night’s rest enables the mind and body to refresh and renew itself. Develop a routine that gives you the best chance of a good night’s sleep, e.g. no screens for 30 minutes before bed, a clean, dark room etc.
Relax
Give yourself permission to unwind. Listening to music, reading or other leisure activities can help.
Normal professional standards apply in relation to confidentiality. Lets work together,
