If Lansing doesn’t act by Dec. 31, it would be a disaster. To avoid that, emergency services director Deputy Steve Anderson asked the county Board of Commissioners on Thursday to pass a one-month state of emergency declaration based on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The commissioners didn’t act, pushing the decision to their Dec. 23 meeting in the hope the state Legislature will act to solve the issue. The reason for the declaration is to allow for continuation of virtual meetings for local governments. The current allowance ends on Dec. 31. Anderson’s request, however, almost didn’t make it before the commissioners. District 5 Commissioner Dan Grimshaw objected to having it on the agenda. The commissioners had terminated a similar declaration earlier and repeatedly have chafed at state disaster declarations. “I don’t agree that we need to bring it back up,” he said. “We are trying to counter it. …. Mitchell, of Dryden, represents Michigan’s 10th district in Washington, D.C. The district encompasses all of Sanilac, Huron, St. Clair and Lapeer counties as well as northern Macomb County and the eastern two-thirds of Tuscola County. CNN published a copy of the letter – which Mitchell later posted on his Twitter page – addressed Monday to Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. In it, Mitchell criticizes President Donald Trump, who has not conceded the 2020 Presidential Election despite losing to President-elect Joe Biden. “It is unacceptable for political candidates to treat our election system as though we are a thirdworld nation and incite distrust of something so basic as the sanctity of our vote,” Mitchell said in the letter.

It is a phrase that I have repeated many times. It is truly a bittersweet experience to meet new residents. When individuals require neurological rehabilitation, there is often a traumatic experience that has brought them through our doors. It is with great passion that we provide services to such traumatized individuals. Motor vehicle accidents (MVA) rank as the number one injury resulting in treatment needed at the Lighthouse. MVA Injuries can be extensive and often include traumatic brain injury. I express hope as I welcome new patients to begin their personal journey of recovery; and with each person’s story I recall a bit of my own. I often hear clients and family members share their disbelief in the circumstances that they have endured. The belief: “This will never happen to me” becomes a distant memory and the depth of the traumatic reality begins to emerge. They (or their loved one) has been diagnosed with a “Traumatic Brain Injury” and life has been altered as they never believed it could be. Yes, this sounds like a potentially grim story, but it does not end here. The journey of TBI recovery can be exhausting and amazing. Many times I hear the phrase, “I know this accident has happened for a reason.” I see individuals who are pulled closer to their family. Individuals who value life with greater appreciation, who give thanks for each sunrise, and who seek to live life to the fullest each day. Experiencing a traumatic brain injury, is like holding your breath and seeing the world through the fog. It takes a team to gently lead the individual through the confusion and introduce them to their new reality. I worked at the Lighthouse as a psychologist for four years before I personally experienced the trauma that I had been leading others through. I learned first-hand of the quicksand feeling when brain injury occurs in an accident. Time stood still, flashes of memories materialized, separation from my family, my body in pain, my thoughts disorganized, I was diagnoses with a TBI. “This will never happen to me,” became a phrase that I would never utter again. In time, with support from a team of doctors and therapists, my body and brain began to heal. Each time I meet a new survivor I am reminded that each TBI is unique. There’s a phrase, “No two brain injuries are alike,” and every TBI survivor (or their family) becomes aware of this truth. With each trauma there is opportunity for a new beginning. It is hard some days during the initial recovery to believe this, but the truth is with endurance, hard work, time, and support, a TBI can become a BIT (Best Interruption To-live) experience. Seek healing in the journey and have patience with your brain as it recovers, you and your brain are a one-of-a-kind and you are worth it.
