Southeast Lower Peninsula Lake St. Clair: Ice conditions continue to deteriorate and anglers should stay off any remaining ice. The Harley Ensign boat launch at the Clinton River mouth was ice free. There was little fishing activity and only a few boats have been out. St. Clair River: Anglers should be very cautious of ice flows as Lake Huron ice breaks up. Conditions can change rapidly. Anglers that did make it out found some walleye, salmon and lake whitefish in the upper portions of the river. Saginaw Bay: Fishing on the east side of the bay was hit or miss this week for yellow perch. Putting in hours and moving locations helped some anglers

The Tuscola County Democratic Party is gathering food and money for the Millington Community Center Food Pantry, located at 8705 State Road in Millington. They serve the Vassar and Millington school districts and are open between 10:00 a.m. and noon on the first Wednesday of each month.

have better catches. Fishing from Sebewaing to Bay Port was decent at times and slow at others. Anglers had to sort through some smaller perch to get larger fish to keep. Wildfowl Bay had lots of perch caught with many small in size. A few anglers were able to locate some larger perch. A lot of sorting was needed to get keepers. Beaded spoons and jigging spoons with minnow heads worked well. From Whites Beach down to town line16, yellow perch were caught in 5 feet of water. On the east side of the Saginaw Bay yellow perch were being caught at Vanderbilt Park in 5 feet of water As temperatures are expected to rise, ice conditions may start to get dangerous very quickly. Anglers will want to use caution. Saginaw River: On the Saginaw River there are only two boat launches open, one at Lee Street and the other at Cass Avenue. Walleye fishing has been poor on the Saginaw River with hardly any fish caught. Tittabawassee River: Anglers have started to fish from boats at Caldwell Boat Launch on the Tittabawassee, but walleye fishing has been poor, with only a couple caught jigging with a jig head and minnow combination at Dow Dam. The lower Tittabawassee River is full of broken ice from State Street Bridge down to the confluence. The Saginaw River also has a lot of shore ice and broken ice in various places from Zillwaukee down to the mouth of the river. This past week the rest of the boat launches on the Saginaw River were iced in. Southwest Lower Peninsula Ice is basically done in Southwest Michigan. Steelhead should be running on major rivers with the recent warmup and rain. St. Joseph River: Coho fishing has been good off the piers at St. Joe and New Buffalo. Spinners and spawn suspended under a bobber were the methods of choice. Grand River near Grand Rapids: Anglers were catching steelhead near 6th Street in the Grand River and in the Rogue River using spawn and jigs tipped with wax worms. A few walleye were caught near 6th Street by anglers jigging minnows. Grand River near Lansing: Last week, fish ladders at Webber, Portland and Grand Ledge opened for the year. Steelhead numbers should pick up this week as the water temperatures continue to warm. Northeast Lower Peninsula Higgins Lake: Some anglers were sight fishing for yellow perch in the shallows and catching fish. Others

were fishing in deeper water using “blues” (minnows) on hooks or lures. Smelt were being caught by some anglers in about 40 feet of water using wax worms and spikes. A few lake trout were caught in the deep water on the bottom of the lake while using minnows. Some rainbow trout and brown trout were being caught in the shallows. A 40-inch northern pike was reported in the catch over the weekend, otherwise the northern pike fishing has been slow. Houghton Lake: Anglers have been fishing for bluegill and crappie by moving around a lot trying to locate fish. Anglers fishing between 8-14 feet using less aggressive presentations reported catching fish. Yellow perch were caught during the middle of the day with a lot of small fish making up most of the catch. Northern pike fishing has been slow and fishing pressure has decreased recently. Tawas: There hasn’t been anyone fishing on the remaining ice off the access road near Jerrys Marina for the last few days. The Tawas boat access is open at Gateway Park, but the ramp is not in yet. There were a couple of boats that fished out in front of the river and down near Aabaster in 20-22 feet with body baits. There were a few anglers in the river, casting body baits and still fishing with spawn and only one sucker was caught and released. Au Gres: There were a few ice anglers fishing off the end of Booth Road at Pt. Au Gres in 10-15 feet. Anglers have caught some whitefish, lake trout and walleye. Hale Road to Sagatoo Road, there were some yellow perch and rock bass caught in 4-6 feet using minnows. There is a pressure crack that has opened up at times making fishing there unsafe. With the warmer temperatures and rain coming this week, ice fishing will most likely be done for the year Northwest Lower Peninsula Anglers should be very cautious on the piers due to the high water levels on Lake Michigan and icy conditions. At this point fishing the shoreline might be the best option. Lake Charlevoix: Lots of burbot were being caught in deep water as they stage to spawn. A crack was reported in Horton Bay which was making fishing unsafe there. Another crack was reported near Sanderson Road where about 12” of open water was found on Saturday that anglers should stay away from. As temperatures are expected to rise, ice conditions may start to get dangerous very quickly. Anglers will want to use caution.
