turnotech quarter 3 achievements IMPLEMENTATION OF COMPANYWIDE ERP SYSTEM Turnotech has successfully implemented a market-leading ERP solution for its Finance, HR, Operations and PMO departments since July 2018. After evaluation of several options available in the market, we have selected Sidat Hyder ERP which is a well-known provider of ERP solutions for SMEs. Sidat Hyder Financials was implemented for better controls in Ops, PMO, Accounting & Finance and HCM (Human Capital Management) was implemented for HR management and mainly Payroll.

Before implementation of ERP most of the day-to-day financial transactions were being recorded manually on Excel spreadsheets which is prone to errors as well as loss of data in case of system failure or other technical issues. Manual recording of transactions also made it difficult for Finance team to prepare management reports within strict deadlines. However, ERP has made these tasks much easier and quicker. Finance team can now prepare any reports required by management within a short time and 100% accuracy. All the supplier payments and other transactions are now recorded directly into the system which has resulted in efficient processing of payments as well as recording of transactions and generating balances of ledger accounts. Moreover, we are in the process of integrating all the project-wise management reports into the ERP which will further increase the benefits of this system as well as provide useful insights into the profitability of projects which will eventually help the management in their decision-making process.

Overall the implementation of ERP in Turnotech has resulted in the improvement of efficiency of relevant departments and the underlying control environments. We look forward to utilizing the ERP to its maximum potential in the months to come. The management's decision to move to ERP from manual systems has been an investment in the future whose benefits will play an integral role in streamlining the overall company processes as well as achievement of its strategic objectives

NETWORK PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION Turnotech successfully delivered more than 12 projects in quarter 3 in central, north and south region for diversified customers using more than 500 resources across the country.

Key Projects included CMPak/Mobilink/Ufone NPM & Rollout. Turnotech also did a large scale ramp up for CM Pak Project and added 60 plus resources.

MANAGED SERVICES Turnotech started working on Ufone MS pilot project in central region in last quarter and has been working since then providing Telco and Non-Telco services (corrective and preventive). Other services provided are refueling, repairing, vehicles & tool kits services and resource management. Turnotech expects and hopes to build further in this domain in future.

ENTERPRISE Turnotech is one of the key suppliers of Huawei Pakistan in engineering field services in Lahore Safe City project.

Turnotech has delivered more than half of this project including civil works, installation and configuration and OSP. Turnotech is also doing end to end operations and maintenance of the entire project. Turnotech has deployed more than 700 resources on this project and has successfully done final acceptance of most of the sites in last quarter.

BSS NETWORK DEPLOYMENT Turnotech has continued working with Huawei for all of their customers in both Wireless and Fixed line domains utilizing over 250 resources. Turnotech also did projects with Ufone CM Pak. BSS department of Turnotech recently started working with Nokia and completed more than 200 sites utilizing 95 resources.

turnotech quarter 3 achievements ENVIRONMENT HEALTH & SAFETY EHS is very important for Turnotech Pvt Ltd and we have ZERO Tolerance Policy over EHS Non-Compliance. The primary benefit of EHS, and workplace EHS programs, is the obvious one: preventing accidents such as injuries, illnesses, and harmful environmental releases.

Turnotech has set internal target and milestones of EHS for field teams on basis of which they are given awards on EHS compliance and Penalties & Warnings on Non-Compliance. We have a team for EHS Spot checks; whose duty is to do spot checks of ongoing sites without any prior intimation to the teams. We expanded our EHS team by two folds in last quarter and invested heavily in purchasing high grade safety equipment, and employees’ trainings and certifications.

Turnotech is at top of the list of all organizations working with Huawei in EHS Dept. We have been on top since start of the year 2018 and have retained our position at top for the whole year.

This shows the importance that we, as an organization, give to the health and safety of our employees as nothing is more important than a human life.

TURNOTECH INC UAE Turnotech expanded its operations in UAE and more than doubled its resources in the last quarter. Turnotech also added two new customers; primarily focusing on outdoor and IBS sites.

Salman Afzal & Ayesha Tiwana are working as RF Director and Marketing Manager resp at Turnotech Pvt Ltd.

In conversation with CTO ZTE Pakistan chen tao Turnotech has been working with ZTE for more than two years. ZTE is one of the leading names in the telecom industry so we decided to bring you a conversation with their CTO. Mr. Chen Tao is the CTO of ZTE Pakistan, who has been working with ZTE since 2004 and moved to Pakistan last year. We would like to thank Mr. Chen Tao and ZTE team for their hospitality when we visited their headquarters in Islamabad. It was a delight to meet Mr. Chen Tao who was warm and welcoming.

We are honored that you are giving us time from your busy schedule. Please tell us a bit about your background, where did you grow up, what is your educational background and how did you start your professional career?

It is my pleasure & honor to meet with you & your team.

My home town is ZheJiang in China. I spent my childhood & youth over there. Then for my graduation I went to UESTC. After my graduation completed I joined ZTE in 2004 and since then I am working for ZTE.

Tell us a little bit about your career path after that? What is the story that leads up to you being the CTO of ZTE Pakistan?

Well it was a long journey to reach at this level. Previously I was in ZTE-HQ Supporting different Countries project for wireless domain, especially in network planning and optimization. My Management asked me for the new role at Pakistan and I accepted this challenge.

When did you move to Pakistan? What in your opinion are the major cultural and environmental changes between the two countries and how did you manage the transition?

I move to ZTE Pakistan in Year 2017. As far as your concern on cultural & environmental differences I believe people around the world are same. They all understand one language, that is love & respect. So if you are taking in this language there no difference of cultural. China-Pakistan have long friendship history that is also based on love & respect. So transition was smooth as here we have many Chinese & Local brothers talking in the same language i.e. love & respect.

China and Pakistan are good friends and a lot of Chinese are working in Pakistan.

What would say to someone who has recently shifted to Pakistan in terms of what they should expect and how they should deal with it comfortably?

Just as per your last question my advice to all my Chinese brothers is don’t worry Pakistan is safe & a beautiful country. People are friendly and talented once you stay here you will enjoy your work and this place.

You have worked in multiple regions, how would you compare the working environment and the telecom industry of Pakistan compared to others?

Well the working environment is good in Pakistan. I am mainly staying in Islamabad which is peaceful and beautiful. As far as Telecom Industry is concerned then doing business here is a little tough. We had four major operator. ARPU of Pakistan is the lowest in the world that’s why companies of Telecom Industry facing huge challenges to meet their market revenue targets with financial expenses and customer needs.

ZTE is an award-winning company, what would you say contributes to the success of the company that leads to such success?

services to its customer. we have product & solutions in all domains for the Telco Industry. Our R&D is continuously developing the new innovation for the industry like Pre 5G , Virtualization CN Network etc. All of these effort has lead us to achieve this award.

How would you reflect on the Telecom Industry of Pakistan in general? What are the key growth areas that you foresee in Telecom industry in next 3 years?

Well like I said before for the smart city we had the solutions and yes global security is a big threat to every country and smart city project is the solution for this. As far as autonomous vehicles it will take time for practical usage.

The Development of the 4G Network & services are under progress, which will rise in upcoming years. Then 5G network, IoT, Customized APP solution, Digitial product solution etc are the main domain where business growth is expected.

What should the world expect from 5G and what is ZTE doing about it? Would you call 5G a revolutionary change?

In addition to the traditional telecom infrastructure business, what else is ZTE doing in Pakistan?

Moving into 2018 and 2019, how do you think Telecom vendors and subcontractors should prepare themselves for the upcoming changes keeping in mind 5G and other similar developments?

I think we should be continuously learning and improving our solution as per the market situation like IOT testing Pre 5G testing. If our business solution are not meeting latest technologies then we cannot survive in the new era.

Being part of the top management of the company, what would you say is the ideal or optimum way of managing employees successfully?

We must keep them motivated. Let them know that they inputs are important to organization. Monitor their performance closely guide them well. Employee should work as a team as a family then every project in the world is doable.

ZTE Quarter 3 2018 Partners’ Appreciation Session ZTE arranged a Partners’ Appreciation Session on 24th of October 2018 at their HQ in F11 Markaz Islamabad. The objective of the session was to brief the partners about overall performance of ZTE in Q3/2018 and to appreciate their support in making Q3/2018 a success story for ZTE. ZTE invited key partners in BSS, Civil and NPO domains at their Partner ’s Appreciation Session including major sub-contracting companies of Pakistan were invited. The chief guest was ZTE CTO Chen Tao who briefed the attendees about ZTE’s performance after lifting of US sanctions.

He also enlightened the audience on how ZTE has managed to regain the confidence of its customers

post lifting of sanctions. They appreciated all partners in making last quarter a success story for ZTE. The closing remarks were given by CTO giving forecast about the next quarter, followed by cake cutting and hi-tea to celebrate the mutual success of ZTE and its partners in successfully meeting the targets in the third quarter despite all challenges.

TELECOM PERSONALITIES TO WATCH interview

Ayesha Tiwana is an MBA from NUST currently working as Marketing Manager at Turnotech Pvt Ltd.

In conversation with CTO turnotech ghaffar masood Mr. Ghaffar Masood is an electrical engineer with global work experience in his field. He has worked with major telecom companies all around the world.

His colleagues and friends look upto him, he is as much loved as he is respected which is a testament to his strong work ethic and kindness. It was an honor for us to get to know him better with this interview.

Mr. Ghaffar Masood joined Turnotech in July 2015 but unfortunately suffered from brain hemorrhage due to a ruptured blood clot in start of Novermber 2015. We pray for his long life, good health and properity.

Despite his partial paralysis, Mr. Ghaffar Masood is in high spirits, undergoing physiotherapy and is able to communicate. He remains part of Turnotech and this interview was conducted in coordination with Mrs. Ghaffar Masood to let him be a part of this Magazine. We would like to thank Mrs. Ghaffar Masood for her help.

You are well known and well respected in the Telecom Industry. People call you a genius in your field. What would you say are three things that make someone a master in what they do?

Thank you for the generous praise, I believe there is only one thing that you need to be a master in your field. If done consistently and diligently you can be anything you want. That one thing is hard work; the harder you work the better you become at your job which ultimately can lead you to highest of successes. What I have relied on throughout my career in addition to hard work is a strong work ethic and consistency.

You started you career as a Trainee at Schlumberger that too in Singapore. How would you say it has shaped your career and you as a person? How do you think it would be different, had you started here in Pakistan?

I think you start shaping your career long before you start working in an actual job, which is why I wouldn’t call my time at Schlumberger a career shaper. I spent four years serving in Army that is when I also did my Fsc and

initial part of bachelors, my time in Army did help me in shaping my career and me as a person. What you learn early on in your youth while you are shaping your education is what shapes your career in the long run.

It’s not just the education but the values your institute inculcate in you as a person.

Tell us bit about your journey in life, after that.

Once I completed my training in Schlumberger I started working in Mobilink which was in the June of 1999. One year later I switched to Nortel but I was back at Mobilink three years later in 2003. After working for Mobilink for three more years I moved to Mobinil in Egypt. Just like this the journey of life keeps taking you to different places for you to learn and share what you have learned along the way; so I worked at T-mobile, Vodafone, Nortel again, Ufone, Nokia, FWCG, Nokia Saudi Arabia, Q Tel, Nokia Iran, Huawei Pakistan and then finally joined Turnotech as their CTO.

Which has been the most rewarding job in your career? Looking at the other end which has been the most challenging. Can one be both?

Rewards and challenges are the opposites, sometimes challenges lead to rewards but I think one can’t be both

IN CONVERSATION WITH MR GHAFFAR MASOOD because a rewarding job is the one where your work is appreciated and recognized and challenges sometimes don’t let that happen. That being said I would say Nokia has been the most rewarding job in my career.

What advice would you give to your young self, the trainee who was just starting his career at Schlumberger?

Like I said before the most important thing in life when it comes to anything but most importantly work is to keep doing hard work. The more you put in a job the greater the rewards and even if we take reward out of the equation, greater the learning. I would like to say this to all the young people starting out their careers is that they should go in their professional lives with the determination and the decision to work hard no matter what. Hard work will always without a doubt put you ahead in your career.

Throughout your career, working in different countries with very different cultures like UK, Egypt, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai.

How did you manage to juggle between different cultural environments? How did make you make sure you manage healthy work/life balance?

There are always uncertainties when moving between different countries but I managed it rather easily because almost everywhere I was accompanied with my good friend Ali Asghar. When you are accompanied by your

by your friends life automatically becomes easy. I have mostly worked in operations which meant working outdoors most of the time. Technology is more or less same everywhere, no cultural differences there so that is how my work was managed properly. As far as culture differences go, the key is to not be intimidated by it rather invite it as a refreshing change, you always learn a lot when you step out of your usual culture.

What would you like to say about your time with Turnotech?

When I joined Turnotech in mid 2015, it was because of two things my faith in this company’s CEO Salman Azam and that intuitive feeling that this company is moving towards its boom. As we all can see in about a few years this company has come a long way in terms of success. I had a great time working in Turnotech. The people here are some of the best people I have met in my life.

What would you like to tell our readers about your current condition?

As you all know that I had a brain hemorrhage specifically Subarachnoid hemorrhage around 3 years ago. As a consequence of this I am suffering from full body paralysis & since that day when I returned home, I am working very hard to get up again. I have high hopes that I will recover soon.

lahore safe city With rapid urbanization, new and state - of - the - art technologies are need of the hour for Pakistani cities so that urban governments can better manage urban centres and serve residents efficiently. The use of technology in city management has given rise to the concept of ‘Smart City,' which is relatively new in urban development and is being adopted by different cities around the world to serve their citizens in the best possible way. Smart cities use ICT and IT solutions to manage the use of resources in the best possible way and to obtain automated feedback through specialized ICT- based infrastructures. Smart cities are becoming a new trend globally. However, each city's model and outlook differs from each other as each city has its own challenges and problems. Hence no universal “one size” fits all technology solution can therefore be designed to meet the city's operational challenges. A smart city is a municipality that incorporates information and communication technologies with its day- to- day operations to improve efficiency, improve the quality of governance and the provision of services to citizens and share information with the general populace.

The government of Punjab took the inspiration from countries and started the Punjab Safe Cities project in May 2016 by launching Lahore Project. When it was launched, general perception was that it was something for the police, surveillance and traffic management only. However, these operations have continued to expand and Lahore’s infrastructure has

become increasingly integrated. The Safe City infrastructure allows authorities to monitor everything from the fire eruption, open manhole, street protests, road congestion, rising smoke, hanging electric wires to accidents, etc. It also enables the relevant authorities to take immediate actions.

The project's first successful impact was observed in February 2017 when an suicide incident occurred on Mall Road in which two top law enforcement officers, one DIG and one SSP were martyred other than 14 citizens unfortunately. In addition to other technology, the police tracked suicide bombers through safe city cameras, including mobile network fencing in the surrounding area and were able to capture the support network of terrorist immediately.

The Government of Punjab has acquired technology services from Huawei Technologies. Huawei provided a one- stop integrated Safe City solution, including the municipal emergency control centre, broadband trunking, video surveillance, facial recognition, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and motorcycle detection, with visualized command throughout the process.

The technology installation benefited the city- wide video surveillance for crime deterrence, pre- detection and timely warnings, converged command and efficient cross- agency cooperation, reducing the police response time to around 10 minutes. More than

7000 surveillance cameras and 1000 ANPRs have been installed in various areas of Lahore. The cameras have also been installed at PRU vehicles that would be supporting the command and control centre in surveillance of the city against any acts of organized crime, terror, and sabotage.

On 25th September, the Punjab government announced that it had started e-challans of the motorist. In the first phase, e-challans are started with traffic signal violation only out of a total of 24 traffic violations. In the short span of one month, more than 87,000 e-challans were issued and sent to the postal address of the vehicle owners, more than 35,000 of whom deposited their fine, which essentially amounts to almost Rs11 million for the provincial exchequer. In addition to revenue from the provincial exchequer, improvements in the traffic situation and compliance with the traffic rules in the city were observed. Motorists began to change their road using habits gradually. In addition, the PSCA has notified the excise and tax department of over 9,000 vehicle records to date for correction. Since 25th September 2018, more than 1,000 vehicles have been blacklisted for counterfeit registration numbers and more than 100 vehicles have been detained by police. Three more traffic violations including the stop line, one way violation and U- turn have been added to the e-challans now. All of this in only a month’s time.

For eight months, the government has given PSCA a target of Rs2 billion in revenue and for the year it would be Rs3 billion. Similar projects in other urban centres of Pakistan, especially Karachi are need of the time. Apart from lack of city wide surveillance and security, Karachi also loses a minimum of Rs. 4 to 5 billion per year for not deploying the smart city infrastructure, using Lahore as a benchmark. In addition, the Lahore Safe City project will be selfsustainable within one year and project cost will be recovered within three to four years. This is the project's simple monetary advantage.

The economic benefits of the projects are also considerable and not yet calculated.

As per recent study it is estimated that Lahore annually suffers almost Rs100 billion economic costs due to traffic congestion. Interestingly, this amount is almost the same as the Punjab Police’s total annual budget. Other than traffic congestion, environmental impact, fuel consumption of the vehicles, citizens’ lives and happiness indicators are correlated with the smart city in the modern world. For example, five different forms of sensors are installed in different parts of the city that provide data in real time. Based on the data collected from the system, the necessary policies can easily be used to improve the city, including pollution ranging from noise to the environment and others.

One of the concerns from general public is the security of city wide surveillance data. The Safe City project in Lahore has developed a security system with device pipe cloud synergy to protect the Safe City system.

The cloud side of the safe city solution includes data center, cloud and big data platform. The infrastructure deployed in Lahore has the same capacity installed in Dubai which could be further improved over time to meet future needs. Furthermore, it is now up to the government and the authorities to fully leverage the capabilities of the infrastructure deployed and to transform Lahore into a modern smart city for the betterment of its residents.

The first industrial revolution caused the growth of industries and paved the way for more engineering based inventions that changed the course of history from the year 1870 to 1914. What do you think is the most significant feature of IoT?

The reality is that the Internet of Things (IoT) allows for virtually endless opportunities and connections to take place, many of which we can’t even think of or fully understand the impact. By the time what we can do best is to educate ourselves on various IoT technologies and keep experimenting with the new trending technology.

In my opinion sensing feature is the most significant one as we tend to take for granted our senses and ability to understand the physical world and people around us.

Sensing technologies provide us with the means to create experiences that reflect a true awareness of the physical world and the people in it. This is simply the analog input from the physical world, but it can provide rich understanding of our complex world.

As per my opinion, yes.

IoT is still lacking a concrete infrastructure unlike internet, whose architecture and design is well documented.

With the inherent assumption that IoT will enable data-sharing across things and applications, it can have a major impact on the data protection and privacy. Moreover, prioritizing the technical artefacts, it may neglect the social aspects of the information infrastructures and technical systems.

Is the world ready with a software platform to harness the full capabilities of IoT? Though Internet of Things (IoT) is everywhere but incompatible platforms, operating systems and different standards are making the enterprises struggle to develop IoT applications and devices that are workable. On top of these, the space-constrained and low-power environments are making it even more difficult to take advantage of full capabilities of IoT.

What do you think is the most significant feature of IoT? IoT is not limited to few features; rather its features are infinite these days. As per my opinion, connectivity is one of most important feature as it is the foundation of providing accessibility to get on the network and compatibility to produce and consume data.

Cloud Computing for Business and its emergence in Pakistan As the world becomes more interactive due to social media, the need for businesses to me more accessible and available for their customers increases manifold. In today’s world if your business is not global, it’s not going to churn up the expected profits or provide the expected ROI for the investors.

The requirement for the provision of an agile information technology solution for businesses has brought cloud computing to the forefront. It not only provides infrastructure and technological resources but also ready-made software solutions and business applications that can be bought and employed on-demand by any enterprise.

Cloud computing allows the ubiquitous provision of configurable computing resources that need minimum management by the enterprise which is buying it. The cloud has three service models that can be readily provisioned by the cloud provider.

These include Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS). Through SaaS the consumer can avail an application developed by a third party which is responsible for the security, maintenance and performance of the application. SaaS applications can be licensed on subscription basis on monthly or yearly basis. Google apps, dropbox and popular team collaboration tool, Slack are also examples of SaaS model which are acting as software vendors for the cloud.

Almost 80% of Fortune 500 companies use the Microsoft Cloud in some capacity [1]. The revenue generated by these cloud providers reflect the business profitability of offering cloud service to customers. In the last fiscal year (2017) Microsoft and Amazon, the front runners in the cloud race reported $21.2 bn and $20.4 bn in revenues respectively while IBM and Google came up behind with $10.3bn and $4 bn respectively.

According to Forbes, the latest quarter of the current fiscal year has shown significant rise in the profits for these cloud providers.

Amazon Web Services Microsoft reported 26.7 billion dollar in revenues raked in by its cloud services such as Azure, Office 365, Dynamics 365. Amazon comes in assecond as a regular cloud power horse with $23.4 billion in returns while IBM announced $19 billion in cloud revenue. Google’s cloud income amounts to about $4.6 billion by the third fiscal quarter of 2018 via its cloud platform, app engine and Play incomes.

PaaS allows enterprises to develop their own softwares by employing the platforms built on infrastructure provided by the cloud provider. This

It primarily focuses on providing a big data platform to assist enterprises in performing data analytics and market insights.

PTCL has partnered with IBM Italia to provide cloud services in Pakistan by delivering IaaS along with Virtual Private Servers (VPS) and webhosting solutions to customers in Pakistan. They also offer data storage and backup services including Disaster Recovery Site (DRS).

PTCL has a huge number of data centres that can benefit from these technologies to provide better services to their patrons.

A number of businesses dealing globally depend upon the services provided by cloud to help them manage their operations in different regions by scaling them up or down according to their needs.

This flexibility eliminates the need for procurement of extra resources which becomes expensive at the eleventh hour and unproductive when product demand has declined. This also reduces the energy consumption costs and results in lower time delays to appease the customer. The business continuity plan can be handled by the cloud service provider according to the contract between the customer and the vendor and can defend your company against natural disasters, power failures or cyber attacks. Telecom Growth in developing vs developed countries : An overview Moving around in various countries for Telecom Business development, I have been fortunate enough to witness the varying levels of telecom infrastructure requirements.

It has always been as per the requirements of telecom operators, which in turn are always in view of requirements of their customer base. This varies as per local customs and needs.

For example, a marketing requirement like “easy paisa” may not be as successful in gulf countries as compared to the South Asian markets. A market where money transaction is much more reliant on bank queues, official timings and cumbersome money transfers to rural villages.

NEED FOR HIGH BANDWIDTH?

Places like Dubai are moving towards smart cities. A phenomenon where everyday utilities like fridge, security systems, cars, watches would be connected via the cloud. IoT (or internet of things) as the terms dictates, would be the soft technology providing connectivity to all such devices. These in turn would require tremendous amount of bandwidth to operate.

But as billions more things go online over the next several years, they will be using 5G networks to send and receive massive amounts of new data.

View from Australia:

As I write these lines sitting here in Sydney, I cannot help but wonder how much difference in requirements each country has in comparison. Here in Australia, there is a massive rollout under the umbrella of NBN (National broadband network) for Fibre, copper and Fixed wireless services to connect each and every corner of Australia with high speed broadband till 2020.

Australian government is not waiting for consumers to catch up. They want to upgrade them all at once.

Nevertheless, it has its separate degree of challenges.

The Australian continent is huge but carries the population of a big metropolitan city!. The infrastructure costs are further marred by the deployment inconsistencies and throughput complaints. Frequent government changes, also disrupts policies in NBN management, which hinders progress of its 2020 deployment deadline.

At the human level, for example, 5G will be used for connecting smart clothing, prosthetic devices, and even ingestible health monitors.

At home, 5G networks will move beyond the cliché of refrigerators that automatically reorder milk to fully integrated living spaces that adjust to the needs of every member of the family, providing home security, optimising power and water usage, and personalising entertainment.

However, deploying 5G networks will require coordination of nearly every federal, state and local agency. In Pakistan where 4G is still not integrated with the new LTE-A technology to provide low latency; it would be a challenge to move further with the high occupancy that 5G will bring. Performance and Quality of service will be key here with security encryptions.

Engineers of future telecom industry in Pakistan Pakistan’s net asset out of two decade long telecom sector is development of its manpower. As telecom companies have kept their RND and manufacturing offshore since beginning, our Manpower has excelled in providing services to these Telecom companies to the level that now 90% of all resources are locals. This skilled manpower of Pakistan is now serving not only in our country but also in remotest corners of the world.

After recent technological developments in telecom industry including SON (Self optimizing networks), AI (Artificial intelligence) and smart monitoring, the requirement of skilled manpower has been drastically reduced.

Currently a cellular telecom network is managed by dividing skillset into different departments and Sub-divisions, e.g. telecom engineers are divided into five main categories and sub-categories, apart from Finance/HR and other departments.

Transmission Above mentioned departments are further divided into subdivisions, so currently our engineers are mainly skilled in either one of above division or its further subdivision.

As I said in my opening note that skilled manpower is our net asset in Telecom industry, so we need to find solutions to keep them in service.

A quick fix in my opinion is to make our manpower multi-skilled,

To cater current impending situation, we must make our engineers multi-skilled in above mentioned areas. Good thing is that because all these departments are interlinked, it is very easy to train our engineers in more than one department. Also because of similarities it will take hardly any time to train our manpower in other than his parent department.

FUTURE OF ENGINEERS

At Turnotech we implemented this idea by shifting departments of engineers to check this possibility, the results were highly impressive. The engineers who were brought in from other departments quickly learned new skills as well as they had the edge on other engineers as they knew working of adjoining department thus enabling them to find solutions more swiftly.

This multi-skill structure is also very important to improve

salaries of our manpower. Due to lack of any government standardization it is on freefall especially from last 5-6 years, an engineer who was earning an average of PKR 80,000 per month is hardly earning PKR 40,000. If we add up inflation index in last 6 years we can see how serious the situation is.

based on demand. By improving and increasing skillset, our manpower can indeed increase their demand hence there will be a definite increase in current salaries for multi-skilled engineers and professionals.

It is high time that all of new and existing engineers adhere to multi-skilled approach to keep themselves relevant in the changing dynamics of telecom industry in Pakistan as well as abroad. Our government and Telecom operators must also encourage and support our new and existing manpower to learn different skills by arranging special training and incentive programs.

There is also a misconception that only obese people should indulge in regular exercise. It is not true, people of all shapes and sizes have an inherent need to be physically active.

Talking from personal experience there have been so many days when after a hectic work day, all I wanted to do was to go home and sleep. But after a minute of mental battle, I would drag myself to the gym and within the first 10 minutes I will not only be energized but happy as well. How does that happen you may think well, let me present you with some scientific facts.

A brisk sweat session can generate feel-good endorphins that elevate your energy and mood. It is interesting to mention here that constant physical activity, mainly exercise is used as a therapy to cure chronic fatigue syndrome.

If going to the gym and working with weights and running on the treadmill is not your thing, good news is it does not have to be. You can do whatever you love, be it yoga, Zumba, aerobic or plain old dance or any other sport you like. As long as you are sticking to it you will see it working for you.

It is also important to note that weight loss is another benefit you will get out of regular physical activity if that is what you aim for. But this article is all about highlighting how crucial exercise is even if you don’t weigh a lot, even if you call yourself skinny. Exercise might be the answer to all your problems.

It is in no way undermining the importance of weight loss through exercise. That is an article for another issue of this magazine. We will also look into the importance of strength training over cardio when it comes to weight loss and better life in general. So stay tuned for our future issues!

turnotech football Initiated by Muhammad Salman Afzal Director RF, Turnotech is organizing Futsal Matches for its employees on weekly basis. Every Wednesday, Turnotech Employees gather up at Total Football Stadium near Comsats University Islamabad to play a very fast-paced game of 6 Players a side futsal match. Employees from every department come up with their efforts to play well. It also improves coordination and Team building among employees and they get a chance to know each other outside work routine. Turnotech on several occasions also organized Inter-Company football match with Huawei and other organizations also that also helped in maintaining a good business relation with them.

In the near future, Turnotech is aiming to organize a Futsal tournament that may provide better opportunity to employees to show their sports skills. Annual Turnotech Bowling Championship 2018 Bowling is a good team building exercise. It is a physical activity that in itself makes the players feel-good by creating feel good hormones. In addition to that the friendly competition between the teams helps employees to interact with each other outside the formal setting of an office. This helps in building interpersonal relationships which will help on the job.

Unlike some other sports bowling requires the team to interact with each other as they play. This connects the employees in such a way that they get to know each other better and can perform better on the job as a result of the bond they form while playing.

For that we have started Annual Bowling Championship. 1st Turnotech Annual Bowling Championship was held at Megazone in August 2018.

It consisted of 20 rounds and the team with the highest score was awarded the first prize. The team member who scored the highest overall was also awarded "Man of the Match". Everyone participated with full zeal, teams were created as can be seen in the picture below.

It was a wonderful experience to be at Bowling Event with all of my friends and colleagues. I enjoyed a lot the company of my colleagues around me playing bowling together and we were the winners of that event so obviously I enjoyed more. Competing with your colleagues and beating them all in any sports competition is always a great experience and at the end receiving Champions Trophy form our CEO was something amazing in itself.

TURNOTECH In order to welcome the warm winters, Turnotech organized a Ludo tournament on October 25, 2018 on rooftop of its Head Quarter. Ludo is a simple and exciting game and there is no contention in saying that ludo hasn’t lost its charm yet.

A total of 16 teams comprising of 2 contestants each participated in the tournament to claim the title of ‘Ludo Champion’. Abid Hussain and Muhammad Rashid were among the 32 contestants who outplayed and won the tournament. The winners of the Ludo Tournament took away with them, the title, and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. The idea behind holding a Ludo tournament was to bring employees together on a common forum and to enjoy a game while greeting winters at the same time. The game added plenty of entertainment with an air of nostalgia.

Special attention was paid to conducting the tournament in the kind of comfortable and stress-free environment so that employees can collaborate with each other besides busy work routine. Ludo tables were set in a proper way to enhance the gaming experience. Hi-Tea was served after the game to make the tournament even more fascinating as food always adds value to any event.

It is also proved to be a huge threat to different dimensions of sustainable development and may also become the cause of external and internal conflicts.

Due to environmental and social impacts, climate change can harm Pakistan in a serious way. These global warming and climate change effects are more noticeable because our country resources are majorly relying on the environment. These include high population density and growth rate, basic survival, poverty, and less capability to adapting negative impacts on the environment.

Being a vulnerable country, Pakistan faces natural disasters every year that results in losing human lives and infrastructure. Moreover, Pakistan’s economy is dependent on the agriculture and due to severe climate change, agricultural risk enhances causing floods, variation in bowing and sowing crop season and long dry spells. Similarly, plant growth is also dependent on the climatic variations which lead to

changes in the ecosystem and thus changing biodiversity. Collectively it can be said that climate changes cause bad impact on ecosystem along with temperature variations.

According to a research by Germanwatch, the Climate Risk Index, CRI score of Pakistan is 30.50 for the period of 1997-2016 which puts it at the spot of 7th most vulnerable country in the world. In 2012, Pakistan was put at the 3rd spot due to CRI score of 12.67 while included in the list of most affected countries by climate change. The CRI defines the relative quantification of extreme weather event. The common natural disasters like heavy precipitation, monsoonal variability, long dry spells, land sliding and flash floods exist in complex topography regions which are experienced due to climate changes. These natural disasters result in losing infrastructure and human lives just by slight change in temperature. The dependence on climate changing is vital as Pakistan is a dominantly agriculture economy-based country.

Forests in Pakistan only cover 5% area while due to an agricultural country it has about 4.2 million (ha) of planted trees and agro forest of about 4.8% of the total land area. There are 40% forests in Pakistan including scrub and coniferous forests in hilly areas while others include riverine forest, irrigated plantation and few major rivers of Indus plains, trees planted on farmland and mangroves forests of the Indus delta. As compared to other countries, Pakistan is forest poor country having only 0.05 ha per capita against whole average of 1 ha. Forests are a source of providing forage, timber, medicinal plant species, and fire wood.

They also improve soil fertility and productivity while giving vital coverage to country’s water shed as well as recreational facilities. These basic benefits make the human life dependent on forest wealth, directly or indirectly. Besides that, Pakistan’s economic growth is also dependent on forest productivity and distribution.

Trees are a source of providing best raw material for industries. The high population growth rate in Pakistan which is about 2.61%) pushes the figure down and currently it is possible to grow it more by planting trees.

To support this, local communities should provide platforms to individuals for planting trees on wasted land and farmlands and help making the situation better.

Trees are a source of oxygen, water conservation, soil preservation, air quality improvement, climate amelioration and supporting wildlife. Plating trees is healthy for the surroundings. Planting trees is the most sustainable way to affect the environment positively.

Trees absorb harmful gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide while giving out oxygen which is necessary for the survival of living organisms present on Earth. Tree plantation maintains biodiversity, ecological balance and control climate. Due to all these fundamental reasons, Tree plantation is of vital importance.

Even when the importance of tree plantation is so evident, there are only a handful of people who actually take it as their responsibility to indulge in this activity and Turnotech is one of them. Turnotech continues to support this cause in whatever way they can. Turnotech supported the tree plantation campaign by sponsoring with COMSATS University. The campaign was held on the occasion of 71st Independence Day of Pakistan, August 14, 2018 that aimed to plant over 20,000 trees of various species.
