“Sustainable Kidney Care for low and middle-income countries” | 3

WELCOME MESSAGE Welcome message from the congress chair and president of the South African Renal Society This is to welcome all our delegates to the vibrant economic hub of Southern Africa, the city of Johannesburg. Many of you should be pleasantly surprised at the first world facilities that are available, showcasing the positive future of our diverse and wonderful country. During our congress we will present talks and research covering a broad spectrum of up to date nephrology topics from local and international experts, some of whom are expatriates, and we will highlight research achievements from our local colleagues. For the first time we will have a full 2 day CME preceding the congress itself, during which we will provide interesting talks for our younger and more senior colleagues alike. We trust you will enjoy the entertainment facilities that are available at our venue, as well as a stone’s throw away via the Gautrain. Of course, these are best enjoyed after maximizing your attendance at the congress talks! I would like to thank all involved in arranging our congress, in particular our sponsors,Turners conferences, and our organizing committee. Yours sincerely, Prof Graham Paget Congress Chair, President: South African Renal Society

SA Renal Congress - 2018

WELCOME MESSAGE Welcome message from the President of the Renal Care Society of South Africa A warm welcome; members of the Renal Care Society of South Africa, invited speakers, honoured delegates to congress 2018, Johannesburg; South Africa. Our combined local organizing committee has been hard at work since the beginning of the year putting together a program that is scholarly as well as relevant to our congress theme “Sustainable Kidney Care for low- and Middle-Income countries”. Based on the theme of this congress, it means us as nephrology practitioners are faced with sustaining kidney care under the financial constraints we are facing. Kidney care in most of the countries, especially in the African continent is still a dream. Most of the African countries are still finding it difficult to keep the pace with the rising kidney pathologies, let alone providing renal replacement therapies. It is against this backdrop that we have come with this theme so as to apply our minds about how we can sustain kidney care under these circumstances. The rising cost of the equipment, the low number of available kidneys for transplantation makes this mission impossible. The type of residence and the water scarcity makes it hard even to think about peritoneal dialysis. This leaves us we only one option which is to raise awareness regarding healthy life style which will help to achieve our theme. Based on the above information it is my duty to acknowledge every practitioner present here today and pass my gratitude to all those who could not make it here today caring for the clients. Thanks to the tenacity of our past president and current deputy president, Mark Padavattan, the RCSSA executive committee as well as the local organizing committee, the Allied Health Professionals for making time to be here. Aside from increasing the Society’s footprint and visibility in our field through networking with other likeminded organisations and legislative bodies, we are also inviting other Allied Health Professionals to share with us their approach in sustaining kidney care. Now let me say, once more you are mostly welcomed and please enjoy the hospitality of our city of gold. Local organizing committee has prepared as always, the best and mind enriching presentations. We are grateful to the South African Renal Society for their guidance as well as the Medical industry for their support over the years. A warm spring welcome to delegates. I trust you will enjoy our interactive workshop and an invigorating scientific program. Dr David Mphuthi President: Renal Care Society of South Africa
