American Legion Post 39 Memorial Day

The attached photo is from the Madison, Maine Memorial Day services presided over by the American Legion Post 39. Cadets from NCB39 Battalion, US Naval Sea Cadet Corps at the Present Arms during the firing detail volley and the sounding of Taps.

Rather than a schoolwide assembly, Mountain Valley High School (MVHS) Principal Matt Gilbert announced Students of the Term over the intercom. He invited each student of the term to a reception in the library with their parents. Every term, teachers at Mountain Valley High School (MVHS) nominate then vote on a student from each class to honor.

The freshman recipient was Sage Taylor. According to Gilbert, the nominating teacher wrote, “She is an outstanding student who has become involved in a variety of school activities.”

Alicia White represented the sophomore class.

“White is an exceptional student,” her nominating teacher wrote, “She comes to target time to perfect her assignments.

She is always prepared and is a pleasure to have

in class.”

Junior Tom Marshall accepted accolades from his nominating teacher who wrote, “This student has been an excellent role model of what hard work and a good attitude can accomplish. In addition to being a good student, he is a very pleasant and well-liked person. He is a great asset to the MVHS community and I look forward to him being a leader

next year.”

Finally, Senior Katherine Mills rounded out the students honored. “Mills is upbeat, personable, sweet, helpful, intelligent and kind. She has a super work ethic and is a dedicated student who is proud of her work and her school.”

All of the students received a MVHS tee-shirt and recognition in the library with their parents. n

Super Season Ends for Falcons

The Old Red Canoe V. Paul Reynolds As I recall it was about 10 years ago when state regulators were having a hissy fit about people permanently stashing their old canoes along the shores of Maine’s remote wild trout ponds. I suppose they had a point, though the sight of old canoes chained to trees next to a pond’s put-in never gave me any heartburn.

Actually, the presence of the canoes was a pretty encouraging sign if you were a first-time visitor to the pond. As a rule, the more canoes stowed in the woods near the pond the better the fishing!

My departed friend from Katahdin Country, Wiggie Robinson, was the King of Canoe Stashers. Man he had so many canoes chained to trees near wild trout

ponds that he lost count.

Granted some of his canoes were a little marginal, but, hey, beggers can’t be choosers. Most of his pondside watercraft were chained to cedar trees and locked with a combo padlock.

A generous friend, Wiggie shared his lock combination with me, as well as the use of his canoes. He had one cardinal rule about how his canoes were to be left: no blood, no mud. Not wanting to lose my canoe privileges, I faithfully honored Wiggie’s protocol.

When Wiggie passed along to take up, eternally, the paddle of the Silver Canoe, his son Jay inherited the list of stashed canoes. What a legacy to leave a son, especially one who lives to fish like Jay does.

Canoes must have been on my mind yesterday. Son Scotty and I fished some Hancock County trout ponds and did some good despite gray skies, swirly winds, and cool temperatures. Working a Copper John with a wet

line near the bottom, we enticed a few early brookies.

During the lull in the fishing, the conversation got around to canoes and the ponds we had fished over the years.

“Dad, you still have that little red canoe stashed at Trout Pond,” Scotty asked.

I had to think a minute.

“Yes, come to think of it,” I said. “ At least, it was chained to a tree there when I last fished that spot. That must have been more than 10 years ago!”

The old red canoe. It has been there waiting for me all these years, and it just sort of faded from my mind. A small, tippy little vessel, my father gave it to me after he tipped over in it for the second time.

It was an easy carry, though, and my boys and I lugged it a couple of miles into a pond that was our favorite at that time. We used it a few years, then I lost the key to the padlock.

Is it still there, do you suppose? Did a fallen

tree branch punch a hole in its hull? Or maybe a porcupine chewed up the wooden thwarts.

Or somebody assumed it was abandoned and walked off with it.

All questions that I need to answer. I’ll go back there later this spring and check out the old red canoe, and maybe fish a little, too.

I’ll let you know what I find, or don’t find.

Two Maines John McDonald

There's a one mile stretch of road on the way to our camp that makes me feel nostalgic every time I drive it. I know when to expect the special stretch because there's a steep dip in the road just before it begins, and there are signs advising you to reduce your speed to 30 mph, as you go by about twenty houses on both sides of the road. The dwellings and out buildings along this stretch are all different, but when taken together, they remind me of the old Maine, the place most of us knew from childhood, but the Maine that is fast disappearing before our eyes.

Housing experts would say some of these houses had serious “maintenance issues.� Horse people would

say they looked like they'd been ridden hard and put away wet. Others might say a particular structure was in need of a comprehensive and sustained building maintenance program.

But it was where people lived back then.

One of the rougherlooking houses in the group is small and has no hint of a lawn around it because of the dogs, goats, chickens and kids that still run around it most of the time. There is also a rough-looking old car on cinder blocks by the front door, which is often left wide open. There's a tripod over the car's engine compartment, and although I'm no expert, I'm willing to bet that neither the car nor the tripod would receive two thumbs up from the folks at OSHA. But then, OSHA probably wouldn't have approved a lot of things that went on in the old Maine I remember.

I'm sure the car's owner is just waiting for the right part or the right time - or

both - so he can get out there in the yard amid the dogs, chickens and kids, finish the job he started a long time ago. When finally finished he can get the car out of the way so the dogs, chickens and kids will have more room to run around and the wife can put in that flower garden she's been planning for some time. Few of us will be around when it gets fixed.

Other houses in the group have neatly covered snowmobiles or ATVs in the yard. From the looks of the houses and the lawns I can only assume that all these vehicles are well maintained and immaculate. But all the houses - the tended and the untended - look like they belong together like houses did in the old Maine.

On the road I lived on as a kid there were two identical cape-style houses built side by side at the same time by two brothers.

One brother was a plumber

and very neat. The other brother was a mechanic was very messy. They couldn't have been more different, except they each decided to build the exact same house side-by-side.

When the houses were done you couldn't tell one from the other. But as

time passed, differences appeared and eventually became quite striking.

People from away who don't know the details will look at the two places and wonder how two houses so different could exist so comfortably side-by-side.

They existed together

because they were in the old Maine. I don't think they'd fare as well in the new.

Shouldn't there be some kind of museum for such places? Otherwise we might forget that they ever existed. n

you must open windows to make sure air is moving through your car. If only the tailgate is open, CO from the exhaust will be pulled into the car.

Next to preventing the

production of CO, the best defense against this lethal gas is a CO alarm.

CO gas distributes evenly and quickly throughout the house. A CO detector should be installed outside

bedrooms to alert sleeping residents.

By Fred Cicetti Q. I had a bird’s nest in my chimney and our heating guy told me we were probably getting some carbon monoxide in the house. He said that this is bad for your health. How bad?

Carbon monoxide (chemical symbol CO) is a colorless and odorless gas that can kill you. CO is a byproduct of combustion.

It comes out of car tailpipes, gas ovens, fireplaces and heating systems.

That bird’s nest was blocking the evacuation of CO out of your chimney from your furnace and hot-water heater. The gas was backing up into your house.

Red blood cells absorb CO more readily than they

pick up oxygen. If there is a lot of CO in the air, the body may replace oxygen in blood with CO. This blocks oxygen from getting into the body, which can hurt you and eventually kill you.

People with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems are more susceptible to the effects of CO. And many seniors fit into one or more of those categories.

The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, irregular breathing, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion You should go outdoors and breathe some fresh air immediately if you suspect CO poisoning.

If you stay in the house, you could become unconscious and die. Then get medical attention right away.

5 Tips for a Healthy Back Jodi Cornelio

June is National Safety Month. It’s easy to see why there is an added awareness on injury prevention in the month of June with spring cleanup and with all the exciting summer activities planned.

I know I am gungho transitioning from spring to summer mowing lawns, riding my bike, golfing, mowing lawns, hiking, boating, more mowing lawns, planting flowers and mowing lawns. This can all take a toll on your back especially after a long winter of hiberna-

tion. In order to avoid back injuries this season here are 5 tips to help you protect your back so that you can enjoy your summer.

1. What’s better for your back: pulling or pushing? If you guessed pushing you are absolutely correct. It is easier on you back to push a golf cart or to push a lawn mower then it is to pull.

The pulling motion stresses the back and arm muscles and is tougher on your joints.

Using a push self-propelled lawn mower or a pushcart for the golf course can save you from unwanted back strain.

2. Stand up straight and without bending forward look down at your toes. Can you see them?

If you can’t see your toes because your belly is obstructing your view, you are not only putting a strain on your heart but you are putting a strain

on your back too.

Considering modifying your diet. Choose healthier choices such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats and cut back on portions. Talk to you doctor about an exercise program.

One of the best ways to reduce belly fat is to get into a walking program first and then gradually move toward a program that involves core strengthening exercises. This will help your back and your belly.

Decrease the amount of sugary and fatty foods in your diet and minimize alcohol consumptions. Eat smaller but more frequent meals throughout the day so you do not overload your stomach at any given meal. The bonus is that all of these things help with digestion too.

3. Stretch your back before strenuous work, after strenuous work

and throughout the day.

Your spine and the muscles in your back support your entire body and they work hard all day long whether you have a physical day or a sit down job.

A simple back stretch that just about anyone can do is to lay flat on your back and bring your knees to your chest. You can do this before you get out of bed in the morning, at night before sleeping and on the front lawn before starting up the lawn mower.

4. Think before you lift, twist, push or pull.

One of the best things you can do for your back is to be aware of your limitations and what is involved in the action that you choose to take on.

Take a couple minutes, slow down and think about it. Are you putting your back at risk? Is the object that

you wish to lift awkward or heavier than one person can handle?

Think it through and get help if needed.

5. Rest. Resting your back throughout the day is just as important as stretching your back.

Take short frequent breaks if you are doing a lot of standing throughout the day. Get 6 to 8

hours of sleep at night.

The best sleeping positions for your back is to lie on your back with your feet elevated by a pillow or on your side with a pillow between your knees.

I hope these back safety tips will help you enjoy your summer fun and protect your back.

Missed Enrollment For Obamacare? What Now? Open enrollment for 2014 health coverage is over, but you may still have options to get health insurance for you or your family. You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, if you have what is called a, “Qualifying Life Event”.

Here are some examples of qualifying life events: Marriage, having a baby, adopting a child or placing a child for adoption or foster care, moving your residence, gaining citizenship, leaving incarceration. Losing other health coverage – due to losing

job-based coverage, divorce, the end of an individual policy plan year in 2014, Cobra expiration, aging off a parent’s plan, losing eligibility of Medicaid or CHIP, and similar circumstances.

Important: Voluntarily ending coverage does not qualify you for a special enrollment period. Neither does losing coverage that doesn’t qualify as minimum essential coverage.

For people already enrolled in Marketplace coverage: Having a change in income or household sta-

tus that affects eligibility for premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions.

Gaining status as a member of an Indian tribe.

Members of federally recognized Indian tribes can sign up for or change plans once per month throughout the year.

If you don’t have minimum essential coverage as defined by the Affordable Care Act, you must either pay a fee or have an exemption from paying the fee.

The fee for 2014 is $95 or 1% of your adjusted gross income, (line 38

These are short term plans, licensed in Maine, which will carry you to the next open enrollment period for coverage beginning January 1, 2015 starting November 15 2014. The applicants for these plans must qualify health wise to be accepted for coverage.

Looking for some affordable fun with your horse and friends? Or do you just love being around horses and watching them? The many local riding clubs around our great state have lots to offer every horse enthusiast, whether they have a horse or not! They are affordable to join and give

chair, sun screen, lunch (or buy it there from the local food vendor), and go get your fill of horses for the day!

Whatever your forte is,english pleasure, western pleasure, gymkhana speed events, trail riding, or versatility challenges, most clubs offer an array of events for you and your horse to partake in. The atmosphere is always friendly, inviting, and encouraging, especially if you are a beginner rider or new to showing. Everyone is helpful and work hard to promote great sportsmanship

The local clubs run on volunteers, from officials that keep everything running, to the volunteers who work on the grounds, to those who cook in the kitchens. New volunteers are always welcomed and greatly appreciated, especially if you don’t have a horse and want to still be involved. These small local clubs need all the support they can get, so if you can’t support them by entering the events with your horse give them a call or send an email and see what you can do to help.

The Autumnfest Horse Show hosted by the Arabian Horse Association of Maine is held the weekend after Labor Day every year at the Skowhegan Fair grounds. Its all breed open horse show which my horses and I attend every year to promote our Half Arabian Versatility, as shown in this picture with my mare, Cocoa!

The Downeast Medal Finals will be held at the Skowhegan Fairground September 12, 13, & 14 featuring the best hunter/jumper riders in the state and from afar. Vicki Lowell of Newry, won the Amateur Adult Medal Over Fences at the 2013 event aboard her horse, Court n Spark. member discounts on rates for events that they host.

All of these events are open to the public, too. So if you are horse crazy, pack a lawn

at all times. They are great places to bring children to have a fun day with their horse or pony and to make new friends.

Cumberland County Riding Club in Cumberland and to Ellis River Riders in Andover, is where I got my start as a kid with my first

horses. I always had great experiences in their family oriented atmosphere.

Today I still go back to the local clubs to get my young horses out or if I just want to have fun with my great horse friends. And the past several years I have taken several young kids to their first show at Ellis River Riders and they have had a wonderful time!

Littleton, Colorado

Stepping off the train after a short ride from a modern metropolis, I entered a world that no longer exists.

A smattering of houses, business establishments, churches and other buildings serve as reminders of small-town America during the 19th and early 20th centuries. A tiny log home stands near a general store.

Colorfully named establishments from the past include the Rough & Ready Flour Mill and the First and Last Chance Saloon.

That setting could be in western Maine, but isn’t.

Instead, it greets passengers disembarking from commuter trains that connect Denver, Colorado, with aptly named Littleton, 20 minutes away in time but over a century removed in atmosphere. The experience is akin to entering a Norman Rockwell painting of life as it used to be - and, in ways, still is in this time capsule of history.

People arriving in Littleton by train are greeted by a 40-foot-wide mural at the station. The colorful folk art composition depicts more than 50 historic structures, some long gone and others still standing.

The seeds of the settlement portrayed in the painting were planted in 1859 when the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush attracted miners to the community, along with merchants and farmers who came to supply and feed them. Two years later, an engineer from New Hampshire named Richard Little arrived and laid out the plan for a town, which was given his name.

Since that modest birth, Littleton has expanded into an inviting suburban com-

munity. For visitors, the interest is centered around Main Street, which richly deserves its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

A walking tour is a good way to view the historic buildings and get a feel for the setting. The journey can begin at the light rail depot, a Victorian-style stone building constructed in 1875. The Columbine Mill, built in 1901 as a grain elevator and storage facility, looks out over the town from its lofty height. The charming Louthan House (circa 1905), named for its builder, is occupied by the Café Terracotta, one of several outstanding local restaurants that make Littleton a mini-magnet for foodies.

Shopping also has a local focus, with an array of small stores that fill many a whim and fancy. Reinke Brothers is a Halloween and costume shop with a focus on ghosts, goblins and ghouls. Countless skulls, skeletons and other merchandise, ranging from fun to frightening, fills the tangle of narrow aisles.

A supermarket meat counter is stocked with replicas of “lady fingers,” “rump roast” and other aptly named body parts. A much sweeter experience awaits at Lola’s Sugar Rush, where more than 700 kinds of candy in every imaginable color, shape and flavor are on display. Treats that were popular from the 1940s to 1970s provide a touch of sugary nostalgia for anyone whose sweet tooth can recall that time Walking in town also provides introductions to public art that transforms sidewalks, streets and other settings into an outdoor showcase. Some three

dozen sculptures, paintings and other works of art adorn sidewalks, buildings and parks.

A different experience awaits visitors to the Littleton Museum. Exhibits trace the area’s history from the time when Native Americans passed through to the pioneer era to more recent days. Its two living history farms are but two reasons why it’s ranked among the most outstanding history museums in the country.

They recreate farm life in the 1860s and 1890s. The earlier spread represents a pioneer homestead during the area’s settlement period.

Museum - Plowing & Planting Exploring a modest cabin and log barn, sitting at a desk in a one-room school house and chatting with a blacksmith as he toils at his trade provide realistic touches of yesteryear. A virtual zoos-who of farm animals, including oxen, sheep, chickens and the largest hog I’ve encountered anywhere, enhance the realistic setting.

Also adding authenticity are livestock, crops and plants that were common during the time period represented.

A different setting awaits at the Hudson Gardens, with extensive plantings devoted to roses, herbs, fragrance and nearly two dozen other

floral themes. Adding interest are some 20 bee hives that are maintained by locals who are happy to share their knowledge about those fascinating flying insects. I learned more than I thought possible about the lifestyle of bees, and found descriptions of their highly structured society intriguing.

If learning that there are nearly 20,000 species of bees isn’t your cup of honey, perhaps indulging your sugar craving at Lola’s offers a sweeter appeal. Maybe strolling through a town with its feet planted firmly in the past and reliving farm life from a bygone era will

grab your attention. Whatever your interests, you probably can find enough to fulfill them only a short train ride from downtown Denver.

Said Daoud, M.D., who helped deliver Tanya’s first son, Sawyer, was away when she went into labor with Forrest. Mountain Valley HS Students Visit Montreal

Each year for the last ten years, students studying French at Mountain Valley High School have journeyed to either Quebec City or Montreal. This year, Montreal was the location. What made the trip different is it was the last one French teacher Cathy Charles will arrange. She retired at the end of the school year.

The travelers included two busloads of students from MVHS and Dirigo High School as well as chaperones, Madame Charles and Madame Kaubrys, French teacher at Dirigo.

One of the hits of the trip was the Biodome that houses four ecosystems common to North America. It was originally built as the bicycle track for the 1976 Olympics.

Junior Shelby McDiffett

said, “I loved the Biodome because I plan to do something with animals when I grow up.”

Classmate Leah Perry added, “I really loved the Biodome and the Insectarium. Both were really interesting and a lot of fun.”

The Insectarium is the largest museum of its kind in North America. It displays live and dead insects.

Sometimes the most memorable part of a trip is an unexpected “find.”

That’s what happened to three students.

Junior Dalton Milledge explained his favorite part of the trip as “the small café that only three of us found.

It was amazing.”

Another highlight, for the teenagers, was exploring the mall but this one is unlike anything in Maine.

Students, staff and chaperones from Mountain Valley and Dirigo High Schools took time for a group photo at Place d’Armes in Montreal.

Freshman Julia Perry said, “I learned that Montreal has the largest underground mall in the world.”

Another freshman Lindsey White added, “My favorite part was the mall because it was like four stories.

All built underground.”

Dirigo freshman Noah Brown liked “the freedom we had to walk around the mall.”

But the trip to the mall was also a learning experience for some of the students.

Freshman Brooke Carrier recounted, “We went shopping and got lost trying to find our way back to the hotel. I learned how to find my way around by looking at all of the signs. Lest the reader worry, all students and chaperones made it back to Rumford or Dixfield safely.

Interestingly, the chaperones spoke highly of visiting the Notre-Dame Basilica.

Chaperone Constance Venskus explained, “I learned that the Notre Dame church is a basilica, a church specially designated as such because of its particular beauty and historical significance. I enjoyed going to the mass Saturday with some of the mothers on the trip.”

Chaperone Kelly Pelletier said, “The churches are

beautiful and mass is shorter there than at home.”

Experiencing a different culture led to learning and insights.

Freshman Andrew Arsenault learned “that Canadians are not Bruins fans.”

Sophomore Ronald Russell added, “Speaking French in real life situations is extremely hard and stressful.”

Junior Kristen Arsenault advised, “Remember at least your basic French words!

So many times on my first trip freshman year, I bumped into people and forgot how to say ‘sorry.’”

Dirigo freshman Bryce Whittemore learned “that Canada is very different from the U.S.” Knowing what to pack seemed to be a point of dis-

cussion. Some wished they had “fancy” clothes. Others longed for shorts and other warm weather gear.

Leah Perry advised, “Bring clothes for all climates. The weather was supposed to be rainy and cold so I only brought warm clothes. Turns out it was beautiful and sunny the whole time.”

Julia Perry said, “Bring lots of nice dressy clothing.”

Freshman Becca Roy gave important advice for traveling anywhere. “Make sure you try new things and meet new people.”

The students and their chaperones clearly had a great time and learned a lot in the process. The students financed the trip through fundraisers and personal contributions. n

Bailey Named Oxford County Teacher of the Year

Mountain Valley High School Technology teacher Jeff Bailey was recently recognized as the 2014 Oxford County Teacher of the Year in a ceremony in the Hall of Flags at the state capitol.

He is in the running for the 2015 Maine Teacher of the Year.

After a day in Augusta learning more about the program, Bailey said, “I met some wonderful teachers from across the state that were incredibly humbled by being selected. Like me, they were truly blown away by their nomination.”

In past years, a nomination had to come from the teacher’s principal or other administrator. This year, nominations were open to members of the public. An additional change was a county teacher of the year was selected for each county.

Bailey explained, “Last year with a more closed process there were only 14 nominees. This year with a more open system, 376 educators were nominated. The goal was to increase the profile of the program and they succeeded.”

Bailey’s nomination came from a high school friend, Micki Stetson, who contributed to his Donors Choose fund raising effort.

Though a website, he asked for money to buy a threedimensional printer for his classes.

Stetson wrote in her nomination, “Mr. Bailey has reached out for alternative funding to accommodate a demand for creative teaching tools so that his students will be able to fully utilize their imaginations.”

Gilbert said, “MVHS was well-represented in the Hall of Flags when Jeff Bailey was awarded the Oxford County Teacher of the Year.

MVHS Theater Arts Class Performs Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland With the Muskie Auditorium off limits, the Mountain Valley High School Theater Arts students took their play to the great outdoors. They performed The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland on the lawn adjacent to the school.

On opening night, the audience braved cool temperatures, newly-hatched black flies and threatening rain clouds to watch the performance. With lawn chairs and blankets, they settled in for a treat and they clearly enjoyed it.

Senior Nathan Fitzpatrick played the White Rabbit who Alice, acted

by Carita DeTellis, chased down the rabbit hole. He explained, “Without an auditorium, we’ve decided to perform the play outside. This presented several challenges. We had to integrate various ideas that break modern convention in the theater.

For example there was no back stage area to prepare actors for the next scene.”

Rather than be hidden off stage, the actors mingled in the audience until it was their turn to enter the play.

Tiki torches delineated the boundaries of the grass stage.

She said, “The play was really fun outdoors. That gave us more opportunities like sitting in the audience. I didn’t have to say ‘Off with their heads!’ to anyone in the audience.”

For those unfamiliar with the story, the Queen of Hearts’ most frequentlyused line was “Off with their heads!” Asked about her experience with the production, senior Kelsey Bevins said, “We put a lot of work into it and it was totally worth it.” She played the Red Queen.

In a scene from the second act, the Red Queen showed how Alice could become a queen. Later on, the Red Queen combined forces with the White Queen to promote Alice from a pawn to a queen.

Junior Kayla Drapeau, who played the Mouse, reflected on the play in terms of the three seniors - Fitzpatrick, Pellerin and Bevins.

She said, “It was the senior’s last play and we did well for them. It was a nice send off for them.” Freshman Hannah Leonard added, “My experience with the play was really, really

fun. We had some difficulties but I believe my cast and I put in our best effort on both nights.” Leonard had two roles. She was one of the cards and a bird. She enjoyed both characters.

Freshman Alexis Vining commented, “I loved our cast. Everyone got along.

We really are like a family. I played a card and the dodo bird in the play and both characters were so fun to play.” So what did the brave audience members think?

MVHS alumnus Andrew Phelps said, “I really enjoyed that play. I grew up watching the old film so seeing it recreated was awesome. Doing it outside was also a great idea. The nature really gave it more of an exciting feel. I’d give it a 10 out of 10 rating.” In addition to the seniors, cast members included juniors Corbin Arsenault, Kristen Arsenault, Kayla Drapeau, Carita DeTellis, Cheyenne Gannon, Shelby McDiffett, Dalton Milledge, Angela O’Leary, and Tucker Phelps. The sophomore actors were Joey Buccina, Random Gurney, Dellshawn Harris, Breann Ross and Ronnie Russell.

Freshmen rounded out the cast with Hannah Leonard, Emily Little, Alexis Vining, Cicily Morrow, Rebecca Roy, Jasmine White and Robert Zaczkiewicz.

Civil War Soldiers’ Quilts

As a lead up to the Bethel Historical Society’s summer exhibit of Valentine family quilts, Pam Weeks, a quilt historian, appraiser and teacher, as well as Curator of

the New England Quilt Museum, will present an illustrated program on Thursday, June 26, about Civil War soldiers' quilts.

Only 16 such quilts are known to exist, and Pam Weeks has had an opportunity to study most of them in person.

During her talk, Weeks, who resides in Durham, New Hampshire, will outline the origins of the U.S. Sanitary Commission at the beginning of the Civil War; the roles women played on the home front and the battlefield; and feature the stories of fourteen authentic Civil War soldiers’ quilts.

She will also refer-

ence the 1861-1863 record book of the Ladies’ Union Aid Society of Bethel, which is in the collection of the Maine Historical Society (the Bethel Historical Society owns a copy of the record book).

Following her presentation, she will sign a limited number of copies of her book, Civil War Quilts, a 192-page hardcover volume containing over 170 photos. This free lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Dr. Moses Mason House (14 Broad Street) and is made possible by the Society’s Florence Bickford Hastings Traditional Crafts Fund. n

No, it’s Mr. Wylie’s physics classes at Mountain Valley High School and their annual rocket launch.

“To keep the students interested in physics at the end of the year, we build rockets,” explained physics teacher Tom Wylie, who will retire at the end of the school year.

Wylie continued, “The seniors already had their final exam. This was an opportunity for the juniors who were left to apply what they had learned.”

According to the students, they learned many things in the process of building and then launching their rockets.

In terms of physics, Adelle Oswald said, “While building rockets in physics class, I learned how to calculate an accurate estimation of the rocket’s altitude.”

ect, we needed to use specific instructions in order for the rocket to be launched correctly. I also learned more about how the parachute releases and is able to drag the rocket towards the ground.”

“If you use pointed fins, the rocket will be more aerodynamic,” observed Griffin Hamel.

Dalton Milledge’s lesson was about safety being a top priority.

He reported, “I learned that hot glue burns skin.”

For some students, the lesson was about seeing the fruits of their labors.

Tom Marshall explained, “The rocket was fun to build and really cool to see your work in action.”

Brandon Gill had similar feelings. “I learned that building something and seeing it work is a great feeling.”

Finally, some students simply had fun.

Jacob O’Leary said, “I learned that science is fun. Seriously, I didn’t learn anything new. I just applied what I already knew.”

“I learned that model rockets are fun,” added Brad Marshall.

The end-of-the-year project certainly kept the students interested and helped them to learn many lessons!n

MVHS Student Aids Start-Up Museum

Mountain Valley High School provides a wide variety of technology classes from video production to pre-engineering.

Those classes are designed to provide students with real life challenges to test their problem-solving skills.

One such challenge involved mapping and designing the interior space for the Western Maine Play Museum in Wilton. Jubilee Bailey, one of the board members and co-chair of the museum’s design com-

mittee, asked her husband, technology teacher Jeff Bailey, for a map of the building that would house the museum.

Jeff immediately assigned the task to sophomore Eric Deanis, one of his architectural design and iTeam students.

Jeff said, “I chose Eric because he is skilled in CAD (computer-aided design) and has been very dependable. He doesn’t give up when faced with a tough challenge.”

A helpful young man who enjoys anything to do with computers, Deanis jumped at the chance to use and improve his skills.

Deanis explained, “I got involved in the Play Museum from my teacher, Mr. Bailey. He thought since I had a love for designing models in Google Sketchup that I would be a perfect candidate.”

Google Sketchup is three-dimensional modeling program used in architectural, civil and mechanical engineering as well as film and video design. For example, it can be used to create floor plans and then turn those plans into a virtual building.

Deanis continued, “My role in the museum project was to create a preliminary model of the building. I created three displays for the project – one for a visual of the space, one with the dimensions of the building and one with labels.”

The three displays were

used to help the museum’s design committee better understand the space available to design exhibits, to create a brochure for fundraising and to create a map for museum patrons.

To those unfamiliar with Sketchup, it may sound like child’s play. However, Deanis encountered problems along the way. As he solved those problems, his skills increased.

He said, “A few things that I learned while working on this project was how to layer the model to give it a streamlined, clean view of each of the three components.”

Asked if he would recommend a similar project to classmates, he explained, “This is a project I wouldn’t recommend to all students since it requires an in-depth understanding of the program. I accepted the challenge since I enjoy using the program, problemsolving and challenges in general.”

The organizers of the Play Museum were so impressed with Deanis’s work that they used it in a fundraising brochure. His floor plans form the core of the inner surface of the brochure.

student being involved and developing his skills while working on this real life project.”

St. Dom’s Pre-K Hop Their Way to $1,135.05 for Meals on Wheels This morning I visited the preKindergarten classes at St. Dominic’s Academy in Lewiston, where I received $1,135.05 for our Meals on Wheels program, the amount raised by their Hop-A-Thon. The children hopped for 2 minutes and friends, families, and neighbors all pledged money per hop. They were the most well-behaved students (great job parents and teachers!) with the biggest hearts. They sat quietly when asked (“put your hands on top of your head if you can hear me,� says Mrs. Fox, “put your hands on your chin if you can see me.�), until I asked if they would show me how they hopped to raise that much money! Then Mrs. Fox put on the music and they showed me with great glee!

Amazing the support these youngest children could raise for our oldest adults. On behalf of our Meals on Wheels clients, a very big thank you to each child and each family member or friend that supported this cause.

We don’t talk much about senior hunger. But the statistics show that we should be talking more about it! 14.2% of people over the age of 60 in Maine have food insecurity. And that number grew by 16% in just this past year.

That’s 42,600 older adults struggling to get enough nutritious food here in Maine.

If these two classes of our littlest citizens can raise $1,135.05, imagine what we all could do to change senior hunger if we “hopped� on board!

The Town of Bethel will be bustling with its largest and most traditional community festival on July 19 & 20th.

The organizer, the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce, has finalized the schedule for the two days – which commemorates Bethel’s past, its vibrant present & the ongoing work of area businesses and organizations to create a promising future!

As has become custom, a theme is established that can be tied to float design in the kick-off parade, held Saturday morning at 10am. That theme is “Homecoming� with the intention to build the bridge between the festival as the traditional town homecoming event, and the fact that MollyOckett Day has provided the platform for the renewal of our relationship with the traditions of the Native American cultural history of this region.

The festivities on Saturday include a Parade; artists & artisans; Native American basketry

demonstrations, product displays & music; an array of food items; the Mahoosuc Arts Council’s annual ARTirondack chair auction; a North American wildlife encounter live animal show; a frog jumping contest; numerous activities provided by area non-profit organizations; a fiddler’s jamboree; an evening two-hour band concert featuring “Crime Scene� a classic rock band, “with a twist�; and fireworks.

Sunday’s events include early morning running & walking events for all ages: a Diaper Dash for infants and toddlers, a one-mile event for children up to age 14, a 2.5 mile “open� walking event and a five mile road race. Maine Grains Speaker at Kiwanis

Amber Lambke, president of the Somerset Grist Mill, LLC, Skowhegan and executive director of the Maine Grain Alliance, gave members of the Augusta Kiwanis Club a look inside the processing of all-natural and certified organic grains recently.

The driving force behind Maine’s sustainable

food movement, she told Kiwanians she hopes to help bring economic vitality back to Skowhegan by reviving the region’s centuries-old artisan grain cultivating and processing industry.

In 2009, she and artisan brick oven baker Michael Scholz purchased Skowhegan’s old county jail,

and with a $1.6 million renovation, transformed it into a gristmill and community gathering place.

It is now the home to the largest mill in Maine. The former jail is also home to three start-up enterprises using the traditional stone milling process.

She also operates The Pickup CafĂŠ at the Som-

erset Grist Mill, a cafĂŠ specializing in farm fresh local food. She told the Kiwanis Club a kneading conference will be held at the mill on July 24 and 25 with educational workshops, production baking, hands-on wood-fired oven building, work study opportunities., and local food meals. n

Mountain Valley High School Artist Honored Ross Gross, a sophomore at Mountain Valley High School, has a work of art on display at Cross Building, across from the Capitol, in Augusta as part of the Maine Youth Excellence in Art Exhibit. The picture hangs in Health and Human Services Room 209.

The work, which is titled Pulp Truck in the Woods, was created using graphite on paper.

“I’ve drawn pulp trucks and logging equipment

all of my life,” Gross explained. “Mr. McGinty sent it to the art show because he thought it was original.”

With a chuckle in his voice, Gross explained how it felt to be recognized, “I’m the next DaVinci!”

Maine's First Lady Ann LePage awarded a certificate to Gross. At the ceremony, she said, “These works of art are inspiring and showcase the talent of our youth," said Maine's First Lady Ann LePage.

"We are so glad to have the artwork on display. We truly feel that this is a program Mainers can be proud of and I hope visitors to Augusta will take the time to enjoy what these students have shared with our state."

MVHS Art Students Offer Virtual Tour Each year Mountain Valley High School offers a night of the arts.

Students display their art in various media, including quilts. Often a musical ensemble performs.

But unfortunately over the years, the crowd has dwindled.

Art teacher Steve McGinty came up with a different idea – a virtual art show open to the travelers of the worldwide web.

son for the virtual show was the leaky roofs over the art room.

McGinty explained, “I usually start preparing for the show in early April.

This entails setting up the display boards and attaching the work to them.

These boards are stored in my classroom until the night of the show. With the roof leaking, I ran the risk of having the work being dripped on and ruined. So, the decision was made to go with the virtual show.”

The virtual art show includes work from Art I, Advanced Art, Ceramics I, Ceramics II, Basic Photography and Advanced

Photography.

But what do the student artists think of the change in format? The reviews are mixed.

Sophomore Stacey Roberts exhibited several works including a ceramic guitar. She said, “I would prefer a real art show just because you can see the real art. It’s not just flat on a screen. You can see the three dimensions – all around the project.”

Diplomatically, freshman Grace Briggs added, “I do like the virtual art show, but I would prefer a real art show because more people would be able to see the art work in person instead of in a

picture. Also, not everyone knows that there is an art show because it is virtual. It would be better if we were to have a real art show so then anyone could come and look at all the art the kids have made.

It’s more ‘realistic.’”

Sophomore Madeleine Kaubrys expresses the opposite viewpoint. She said, “Having my artwork displayed in the virtual art show was really exciting. It’s cool to think that anyone can watch it at any time!”

“I prefer the virtual show,” added Cierra Gan-

non, “because you could always go back and look at the art work and photos.

With a real art show, you can’t.”

The young artists did agree the show is worth viewing and had difficulty singling out one or two works they liked the best.

Briggs explained, “If I had to choose my favorite piece of artwork in the art show I honestly couldn’t. All of it, every single piece is wonderful.

They’re all unique in their own way.”

Roberts also liked the uniqueness of the work.

“I like that the work is the student’s own project. They could make anything they want like Madeleine made the Eiffel Tower.”

Gannon added, “My favorite works in the show were some of Josh Maillet and Kelsey Bevins photographs. They were absolutely stunning.”

Youtube.com encourages viewers to leave comments about postings. The artists would be grateful for the feedback from visitors to the virtual show. n
