Franklin Savings Hires Lenderand Technology Manager

Franklin Savings Bank has hired a new lender for its Skowhegan Branch and promoted an information systems engineer to manage the Information Systems Department.

Patrick Dore has been named as the new loan officer at the Skowhegan Branch and Brad Martin has been named manager of the Information Systems Department.

For Dore, the position in Skowhegan means a return to his hometown, where he was a graduate of Skowhegan Area High School. He studied business and finance at the University of Southern Maine and, since 2007, he has been working as a mortgage lender in South Portland. Two years ago, he and his brothers bought the Old Mill Pub, where he works on weekends.

“Our family is young.

We wanted to bring our kids back and raise them

where we were raised,” said Dore. “We wanted to be a bigger part of our community.”

Skowhegan is a small town with growth potential, said Dore. “It’s a welcoming, safe and strong community.”

Based on the idea that family members often take on caregiving without preparation or training, participants learn what dementia is and how it affects the individual and develop skills on how to interact and communicate with a person with dementia. Caregivers will also find out where to go for resources and services to help support themselves, as well as the person with dementia.

After attending the program, caregivers often report positive changes in their expec-

tations and attitudes.

Little Rediscoveries You can't go home again.

In his novel by the same name, author Thomas Wolfe advanced the idea that any attempt to relive our youth-

ful memories will always fail.

Perhaps, but isn't it worth trying once in awhile?

In the most northern

reaches of Maine's North Woods, there is a small remote trout pond that has always held special meaning for me. It's a scenic pond.

The trout aren't big but they are plentiful. And you can keep a couple for the pan.

It's a helluva drive to get there.

As a young father I tented there with my wife and young sons. I taught them all to throw a fly line and handle a canoe. They took to it all, with energy and passion. As my boys grew we made a number of trips to this pond and packed away some razor-sharp memories.

The years passed. My boys became men, middleaged men with big responsibilities and children of their own. We never stopped hunting and fishing together but usually on a catch-ascatch-can basis, a day here a day there. Recently, out of the blue, my sons suggested that the three of us go back to this special pond for a few days of bonafide backwoods camping and trout fishing - a father and son revisitation, a

nostalgic pilgrimage to our coveted Trout Cathedral.

We did just that. We packed two canoes, three bellyboats, fly rods, cribbage board, a jug and some good chow and headed north.

Typically, the first two days were cold and rainy, but the fishing was great!

Watching my sons enjoy each other and share the contagious joy of fly fishing over hungry trout stirred in me a father's pride and love just as it did years ago. The last night on the water, as a premeditated act of reminiscence, I uncased a delicate 2-3 weight fly rod that had not seen the light of day in 30 years. The late Bangor rafting guide and fly shop entrepreneur Nick Albans sold me the willowy little stick in 1969. It may have been used once, I'm not sure. Once on the water and after a few trout hookups, I kicked myself for letting the rod lay idle all these years.

What fun that little rod was with a 10- inch brookie dancing on the tippet. It will get a lot more use in the an-

gling days ahead.

When the unrelenting Aroostook County scud line finally lifted and the sun shone through to brighten things up, it dawned on me: nothing at this pond had changed in almost 50 years!

The view was the same. The pond was gin clear and the trout still were feisty and willing to hit an emerger stripped beneath the surface. The picnic table at the campsite was the same one that was there in the 1970s.

Son Josh showed me where he had carved his name in the cedar table as a ten-yearold.

What a remarkable thing, especially in this era of accelerated change, and a tribute it is to those whose vision has helped protect this natural heritage, organizations like North Maine Woods and many others.

Wolfe may have been a legendary novelist, but, like the rest of us flawed critters, he had no monopoly on truth when it comes to the human condition. Indeed, last week my sons and I did go back

On June 4, Somerset Career & Technical Center hosted a New Students & Parents Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to enable students and parents/guardians to meet the SCTC Staff and to familiarize themselves with their classrooms and the various school areas.

After a brief welcome from Director David Dorr and Student Services Coordinator Ann Thiboutot, students and parents dispersed to their chosen classrooms where program information and requirements were discussed. Instructors became acquainted with their new students and family mem-

bers and answered questions at the informal meeting.

Over 100 people attended the meeting. Light refreshments were served.

One Man's Trash...

A Fairfield property owner has been ordered to clean up his yard and get rid of what the town considers to be "junk" taking up his lawn. Owner Robert Dale, the latest victim in the ongoing battle between Maine’s town officials and creative “backyard entrepreneurs” like Dale. As you might expect he’s not happy that he is being “forced” by government edict to clean

up the tables, chairs, sofas, tools, cars, washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, engine blocks, assorted car parts and other items on his property. It was ordered to be done by June 15, which is now passed. It is an issue which has been going on in this particular town for more than a year.

But battles like it have gone on in Maine since colonial times. The selling of used items from front lawns, door yards or porches, have been issues in Maine since the yard sale was invented.

No one knows who first got the idea of dragging some junk out onto a lawn somewhere to engage in untaxed, unregulated,

freewheeling commerce.

The person’s name is lost to history. It is also unknown what particular items were dragged onto the lawn and whether the items came from a Maine attic, a cellar, or the town dump. No one knows how much money is generated by the thousands of such sales held in Maine each year, but economists say the gross amounts could rival the earnings of BIW or CMP. The town of Fairfield has filed a lawsuit claiming Dale is using his property as a “junkyard” without having paid all fees and without acquiring all necessary permits. He’s also accused of violating a

number of town codes. Dale calls his lawn "an outdoor antique store."

He insists he is engaging in pure, unfettered free enterprise. What could be more American? But it’s apparently enough to give town officials peptic ulcers.

He says, "They defined it as junk and I don't believe it is junk. I feel it is not fair.

I am being told to remove things that I am selling outside. That is what I consider unfair. Whether it is a piece of furniture or a cast iron pot - I don't know why somebody down the road can have stuff outside and I can't," said Dale said.

Other violations listed in Fairfield’s court document were: improper storage of items, blocked exits, along with stating the property is operating as a “nuisance.”

"It might look like a lot of stuff to you but I have been working on it for six weeks and moved a lot of stuff out of there. A lot of people keep saying it is a lot of stuff and really isn't a lot of stuff," said Dale.

If Dale does not meet the deadline he will need to pay a $5,000 penalty fee plus an additional $150 every day after. The town could come in and clean up the property for Dale but he would be billed for the removal. n

The pulling motion stresses the back and arm muscles and is tougher on your joints. Using a push self-propelled lawn mower or a pushcart for the golf course can save you from unwanted back strain.

2. Stand up straight and without bending forward look down at your toes. Can you see them?

If you can’t see your toes because your belly is obstructing your view, you are not only putting a strain on your heart but you are putting a strain on your back too.

One of the best ways to reduce belly fat is to get into a walking program first and then gradually move toward a program that involves core strengthening exercises.

Decrease the amount of sugary and fatty foods in your diet and minimize alcohol consumptions.

You can do this before you get out of bed in the morning, at night before sleeping and on the front lawn before starting up the lawn mower.

4. Think before you lift, twist, push or pull.

One of the best things you can do for your back is to be aware of your limitations and what is involved in the action that you choose to take on.

By Fred Cicetti Q. I had a bird’s nest in my chimney and our heating guy told me we were probably getting some carbon monoxide in the house. He said that this is bad for your health. How bad?

Carbon monoxide (chemical symbol CO) is a colorless and odor-

less gas that can kill you. CO is a byproduct of combustion. It comes out of car tailpipes, gas ovens, fireplaces and heating systems.

That bird’s nest was blocking the evacuation of CO out of your chimney from your furnace and hot-water heater.

The gas was backing up into your house.

Red blood cells absorb CO more readily than they pick up oxygen. If there is a lot of CO in the air, the body may replace oxygen in blood with CO. This blocks oxygen from getting into the body, which can hurt you and

eventually kill you.

People with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems are more susceptible to the effects of CO. And many seniors fit into one or more of those categories.

The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, irregular breathing, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion You should go outdoors and breathe some fresh air immediately if you suspect CO poisoning.

If you stay in the house, you could become unconscious and die.

Then get medical attention right away.

The proper operation and maintenance of all fuel-burning appliances is the most important way to reduce the risk of getting dangerous CO in your home.

When appliances are kept in good working condition, they produce little CO. Also, having your chimney checked regularly is smart.

Signs that might indicate improper appliance operation include: * Decreasing hot water supply * Furnace unable to heat house or runs constantly

with a tailgate open, you must open windows to make sure air is moving through your car. If only the tailgate is open, CO from the exhaust will be pulled into the car.

Next to preventing the production of CO, the best defense against this lethal gas is a CO alarm. CO gas distributes evenly and quickly throughout the house. A CO detector should be installed outside bedrooms to alert sleeping residents.

In 2009, she and artisan brick oven baker Michael Scholz purchased Skohegan’s old county jail, and with a $1.6 million renovation, transformed it into a gristmill and community gathering place. It is now the home to the largest mill in Maine.

She also operates The Pickup Café at the Somerset Grist Mill, a café specializing in farm fresh local food.

She told the Kiwanis Club a kneading conference will be held at the mill on July 24 and 25 with educational workshops, production baking, hands-on wood-fired oven building, work study opportunities., and local food meals. n

The Bulldogs beat Calais 1-0 at St. Joseph’s College in Standish on June 21. Senior pitcher Emily McKenney pitched the shutout that included 9 strikeouts and just 1 walk. Her opponent,

she knocked the next pitch, a line drive, over the first baseman’s head an into the far right field corner. Coach Chris Leblanc kept waving the quick freshman around the bases. It was hard to tell what was moving more quickly, coach LeBlanc’s arm or Wood’s young legs. A

Olivia Smith, also had a super game, allowing just three hits. However, it took just one hit, an inside-thepark homerun, from Bulldog freshman, Madeline Wood.

Wood, the second baseman, was down in the count with two strikes at her fifth inning bat when

bit of slow fielding from the Calais player allowed Wood to make it home safely.

McKenney determinedly followed this serendipity by putting down the next six Blue Devil batters. This was the fifth state title for Madison since 1994. n

Skowhegan won the 2014 Class A Softball Championship game over Thornton Academy with a great show of hitting and solid defense. The Indians were last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s runners up and spent a lot time in the pre- and early season practicing their hitting. It paid off with a dozen hits netting them 4 runs in the first inning, 1 more in the second and 2 in the fourth.

Skowhegan has been in six state title games since

1993 including last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s loss to Scarborough. This year the girls were primed for the winning. Senior Kaitlyn Therriault was the winning pitcher. Though she had just a few strikeouts, she kept the anxious Thornton Trojans puzzled with her mix of pitches.

Her consistency was backed up mightily by her teammatesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; batting skills and solid defense earning them a 7-3 victory and a Class A Title. n

Stepping off the train after a short ride from a modern metropolis, I entered a world that no longer exists. A smattering of houses, business establishments, churches and other buildings serve as reminders of smalltown America during the 19th and early 20th centuries. A tiny log home stands near a general store. Colorfully named establishments from the past include the Rough & Ready Flour Mill and the First and Last Chance Saloon.

That setting could be in western Maine, but isn’t.

Instead, it greets passengers disembarking from commuter trains that connect Denver, Colorado, with aptly named Littleton, 20 minutes away in time but over a century removed in atmosphere.

The experience is akin to entering a Norman Rockwell painting of life as it used to be - and, in ways, still is in this time capsule of history.

People arriving in Littleton by train are greeted by a 40-foot-wide mural

at the station. The colorful folk art composition depicts more than 50 historic structures, some long gone and others still standing.

The seeds of the settlement portrayed in the painting were planted in 1859 when the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush attracted miners to the community, along with merchants and farmers who came to supply and feed them. Two years later, an engineer from New Hampshire named Richard Little arrived and laid out the plan for a town, which was given his name.

Since that modest birth, Littleton has expanded into an inviting suburban community.

For visitors, the interest is centered around Main Street, which richly deserves its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

A walking tour is a good way to view the historic buildings and get a feel for the setting. The journey can begin at the light rail depot, a Victorian-style stone building

constructed in 1875. The Columbine Mill, built in 1901 as a grain elevator and storage facility, looks out over the town from its lofty height. The charming Louthan House (circa 1905), named for its builder, is occupied by the Café Terracotta, one of several outstanding local restaurants that make Littleton a mini-magnet for foodies.

Shopping also has a local focus, with an array of small stores that fill many a whim and fancy. Reinke Brothers is a Halloween and costume shop with a focus on ghosts, goblins and ghouls. Countless skulls, skeletons and other merchandise, ranging from fun to frightening, fills the tangle of narrow aisles. A supermarket meat counter is stocked with replicas of “lady fingers,” “rump roast” and other aptly named body parts. A much sweeter experience awaits at Lola’s Sugar Rush, where more than 700 kinds of candy in every imaginable color, shape and flavor are on display. Treats that

were popular from the 1940s to 1970s provide a touch of sugary nostalgia for anyone whose sweet tooth can recall that time Walking in town also provides introductions to public art that transforms sidewalks, streets and other settings into an outdoor showcase. Some three dozen sculptures, paintings and other works of art adorn sidewalks, buildings and parks.

A different experience awaits visitors to the Littleton Museum. Exhibits trace the area’s history from the time when Native Americans passed through to the pioneer era to more recent days. Its two living history farms are but two reasons why it’s ranked among the most outstanding history museums in the country.

They recreate farm life in the 1860s and 1890s. The earlier spread represents a pioneer homestead during the area’s settlement period. Exploring a modest cabin and log barn, sitting at a desk in a one-room school house and chatting with a

Somerset Career & Technical Center’s 37th Annual Final Awards Ceremony The Somerset Career & Technical Center’s 37th Annual Final Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 22, in the Skowhegan Area High School Gymnasium. The gymnasium was filled to seating capacity with over 600 parents, relatives, and guests of the 156 graduating career and technical education students.

Amanda Landry, a junior at Upper Kennebec Valley High School, provided musical selections and sang the Star Spangled Banner.

Director David Dorr and staff members recognized the outstanding students for the school year and awarded $16,000 in scholarship monies.

Looking for some affordable fun with your horse and friends? Or do you just love being around horses and watching them? The many local riding clubs around our great state have lots to offer every horse enthusiast, whether they have a horse or not! They are affordable to join and give member discounts on rates

The atmosphere is always friendly, inviting, and encouraging, especially if you are a beginner rider or new to showing. Everyone is helpful and work hard to promote great sportsmanship at all times. They are great

volunteers, from officials that keep everything running, to the volunteers who work on the grounds, to those who cook in the kitchens. New volunteers are always welcomed and greatly appreciated, especially if you don’t have a horse and want to still be involved. These small local clubs need all the support they can get, so if you can’t support them by entering the events with your horse give them a call or send an email and see what you can do to help.

The Autumnfest Horse Show hosted by the Arabian Horse Association of Maine is held the weekend after Labor Day every year at the Skowhegan Fair grounds. Its all breed open horse show which my horses and I attend every year to promote our Half Arabian Versatility, as shown in this picture with my mare, Cocoa!

The Downeast Medal Finals will be held at the Skowhegan Fairground September 12, 13, & 14 featuring the best hunter/jumper riders in the state and from afar. Vicki Lowell of Newry, won the Amateur Adult Medal Over Fences at the 2013 event aboard her horse, Court n Spark. for events that they host.

All of these events are open to the public, too. So if you are horse crazy, pack a lawn chair, sun screen, lunch (or

Madison’s Student Of The Year

Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) has named Timothy McDonald of Madison Student of the Year for 2014.

McDonald, better known by his nickname, “Tug,” is 41 and completing his final semester in the Precision Machining Technology program. He graduated in May with a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree.

McDonald was honored April 23 at a ceremony at

the Senator Inn in Augusta along with recipients of the honor from Maine’s six other community colleges.

“Tug sets an example for adults who are uncertain about their capacity to excel in college after many years away from the classroom, or who question the relevance of higher education in their lives,” KVCC President Dr. Richard Hopper, said.

“He shows us that it's pos-

sible to overcome hardships and achieve at the highest levels. Tug also has personal qualities that make the college experience a whole lot of fun for himself and for everyone around him."

Seven students, one from each of Maine's Community Colleges, are honored each year as their institution’s Student of the Year. Nominated by faculty, staff and administration, the students are selected for their academic success, campus and community involvement, and their ability to achieve in the face of adversity. Each student is awarded a John H. Lapoint, Jr. Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000.

Thirteen KVCC students were nominated for the honor. McDonald was selected based on his academic excellence, service, leadership, and ability to be a role model for other students.

McDonald has a grade point average of 3.975.

Jeff Godin, instructor for KVCC’s Precision Machining Technology program, said McDonald enrolled in the fall of 2012 with the attitude that KVCC offered a second chance at college; he had attended the University of Maine many years earlier and was not successful there.

“From day one he took on the role as the class

mentor - he formed study groups that forged a bond among the class members.

Tug has an aptitude for practical problems, especially in math,” Godin said.

In the course of his time at KVCC McDonald has shown rare determination to succeed. Diagnosed with diabetes last year, he overcame time he missed in class from the illness to complete his first year, Godin said.

Math Instructor Jared Harvey said McDonald is a great student and a pleasure to have in his trigonometry class.

“Tug is someone who always has a positive attitude and a desire to learn.

In my Trig class, he took it upon himself to set up a study group with other people in his program who were struggling,” Harvey said. “Tug is a great role model and a pleasure to work with, and he also has a great sense of humor.”

KVCC Dean of Students Karen Normandin said McDonald was raised by parents who taught him the virtue of service to others. He has served as a Boy Scout leader, a volunteer firefighter, a youth sports coach, and a member of his local Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).

McDonald has also been involved in the “Bikes for Books” reading incentive program providing bicycles and helmets each year

to young readers in local schools, scholarship fundraisers that provide $500 scholarships to two Madison Area Memorial High School seniors each year, and uses his love of cooking to raise funds for local residents needing help with unplanned medical expenses, Normandin said.

A father of six facing the same financial, medical, and employment challenges familiar to many of his fellow KVCC students, McDonald has persevered through each obstacle that might have ended his college plans, Normandin said.

“Each time, he has reached deep to find a way to maintain his grades, complete his degree, and to continue to give of himself to others,” Normandin said. “He has quietly lived his life in service to others, making a difference one kind act after another.”

This year McDonald has taken on a part-time work study job at KVCC assisting Safety Director Bruce Davis with safety compliance work on the campus, and has quickly established himself as a diligent and loyal worker who goes the extra mile.

Davis cited as a recent example an evening when McDonald knew Davis was busy at a charity event for children when a situation arose where that required immediate attention. Not wanting Davis to

be pulled away from the charity event and the children, McDonald stayed on several hours past his normal work schedule to take care of the situation.

“He didn’t even let me know until later so I could do my important work there,” Davis said. “He is the best work study student I have ever had. I have the utmost respect for Timothy McDonald.”

McDonald delivered the student address for the Class of 2014 at KVCC’s 44th Commencement Exercises May 17 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Upon graduation, McDonald plans to pursue work as a machinist, following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather.

John Lapoint was founder and president of a highly successful business, U.F. Strainrite – now Lapoint Industries – in Auburn. Lapoint started his education at a two-year college and went on to become a respected business leader.

Never forgetting his roots, he was committed to supporting philanthropic causes and giving back to the community.

Mr. Lapoint's widow, Jana Lapoint, helped establish the fund for the annual Student of the Year awards.
