Nothin’ But Small Talk…Looking out for You! Jess Small

Maine Mounted Search And Rescue (MMSAR), a non-profit volunteer organization, is currently Maine’s only mounted search and rescue unit.

This amazing organization looks for lost people, not lost horses (a common misconception!) MMSAR is on call to the Maine Warden Service, and is a member of the Maine Association for Search And Rescue (MASAR).

MMSAR is a "professional volunteer" organization. As volunteers, the basic equipment is supplied by each member and members also donate their own time and fuel for trainings and searches.

They rely on fundraising efforts, and donations from the public, to pay for their necessary training, purchasing specialized equipment such as 2-way radios, and provide fuel reimbursement for searches and mounted training sessions.

As professionals, MMSAR members are responsible for attending monthly meetings and training sessions.

MMSAR is officially based in Litchfield, ME; and hold many of their meetings at the Litchfield Fire Station.

The organization currently has about a dozen members.

Most of the members live in Southern or Central Maine, but they are always looking for members all throughout the state. Wider membership coverage means they can respond faster to searches all over the state. They currently have one support (nonmounted) member and are very open to having more.

The Basic Requirements for a member of Maine Mounted Search and Rescue are: dedication and commitment, access to horse, truck, and trailer (if mounted member), having a reasonable physical fitness level, ability to leave home/work with very little notice, and completion of required trainings and certifications.

Horses and riders have to pass testing to be certified by MMSAR and to be able to participate in searches.

What do horses add to a search and rescue you may ask? Well, horses are slower than ATVs, enabling the rider to more easily search for clues and for the missing subject.

They are faster than people on foot, enabling the team to quickly move from staging area to search area, move quickly between dispa-

rate search areas, and return from the outer reaches of their search area without the Command Post needing to deploy resources to retrieve the MSAR team.

Horses are quieter than ATVs, enabling both the horse and rider to listen for voices, whistles, and other signals.

Horses find their own best route down a path, enabling the rider to focus on looking for clues and for the missing subject.

A horse/rider team covers a wide angle of vision, about 5-8' off the ground. Being on the back of a horse elevates the riders' eyes to about 8' off the ground, giving a very different angle of view to the ground than a walker or ATV rider would have.

Meanwhile, the horses' eyes are about the same height as those of a person on foot would be. Because horses are prey animals, they're looking for things that are out of place just as much as we are!

Horses can see, hear, and smell things long before we can, and their reactions (stop, look and point their ears in that direction, snort) alert us that there's something we need to check out.

Just like search and rescue (SAR) dogs, a good SAR horse knows when s/he is working, because the gear they wear, and the atmo-

sphere/vibe around them, are both different.

On a search, they tend to be much less prone to alert at irrelevant animals such as a chipmunk or bird, are more willing to walk slowly, and are more patient when standing tied. They know their job is to remain calm, choose a safe path, and look/listen and smell for people and things that don't "belong".

This helps the rider, who is then able to better focus on their own job, looking for clues and the missing subject.

MSAR teams are capable of searching varied terrain, including light woods, fields, roads, ATV trails, hiking trails, wild game trails, and even suburban neighborhoods.

It is not generally safe for MSAR teams to search extremely steep areas, swampy areas, or areas with a lot of "slash" left over from logging operations.

Thick woods can be difficult for MSAR teams to search as effectively as people walking on foot, but it can be done as long as the footing is safe.

MMSAR riders are fully certified under the Maine Association for Search and Rescue (MASAR) standards.

Organizations Can Apply for Funds Mid-State Machine Foundation is looking for nonprofit charitable organizations again this year to benefit from the foundation's winter fund-raising campaign.

Last year, we helped out over 30 different organizations with over $68,000.

Employees established the Mid-State Machine Foundation in 1993 to raise funds independently of United Way of Mid-Maine Inc., which it previously supported.

In 1993 - the first year of the program - the foundation distributed about $19,000.

This year 2013 estimated amount raised is more than $88,000.

Here we are 20 years later and the foundation has raised more than 1 million dollars to date! The employees and company should be very proud of this accomplishment!

And all the money distributed has stayed locally in the central Maine area.

Donations are based on

continuing need, not emergency relief. Organizations that have received funds from the foundation include the Waterville Area Boys & Girls Club, American Red Cross; Family Violence Project, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Kennebec County, and the Pine Tree Society for handicapped Children and Adults Inc. The Salvation Army unit in Waterville, Maine Children’s Cancer program and over 12 area food pantry’s and soup kitchens.

The Healthy Geezer

By Fred Cicetti I’ve received quite a few inquiries related to breast cancer. I can’t answer them all in one column so I’m doing a three-part series. This is the first installment.

Breast cancer is second behind lung cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in women. The chance

of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is about 1 in 8.

The female breast is composed primarily of milkproducing glands (lobules), ducts that connect the glands to the nipple, and soft tissue.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that has grown from breast cells. Nearly all breast cancers start in the ducts or lobules of the breast. The cancer can spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body, but it will continue to be defined as breast cancer.

There are many forms of breast cancer. Infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) is the most common form. It starts in a duct, then breaks through the duct wall and

invades the tissue of the breast. At this point, it can metastasize through the lymphatic vessels and the bloodstream.

About 80% of invasive breast cancers are infiltrating ductal carcinomas.

Lymph plays a major role in breast cancer. It is a fluid that carries immunesystem cells through lymphatic vessels.

Lymph nodes are small collections of these cells in the vessels.

Almost all lymphatic vessels in the breast connect to lymph nodes under the arm.

Cancer cells that en-

ter lymphatic vessels can spread and begin to grow in lymph nodes. This is why doctors check the lymph nodes to see if breast cancer has spread.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common type of noninvasive breast cancer. The term “in situ” means the cancer is confined to its original site.

DCIS denotes that the cancer cells are inside the ducts but have not s p r e a d through the walls of the ducts into the

surrounding breast tissue.

About 20% of new breast cancer cases will be DCIS. Nearly all women diagnosed at this early stage of breast cancer can be cured.

There are many risk factors for breast cancer.

The risk rises with age.

About 77% of women with breast cancer are older than 50 when they are diagnosed.

Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close relatives have the disease.

A woman with cancer in one breast is at high risk of developing a new cancer in either of her breasts.

Women who started menstruating before age 12 or who went through menopause after age 55 have a

slightly higher risk of breast cancer.

Having multiple pregnancies and becoming pregnant at an early age reduces breast cancer risk.

Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after menopause increases your risk of breast cancer.

Drinking alcohol is linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Obesity is a breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause.

Evidence is growing that exercise reduces breast cancer risk.

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Awards Grant The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) announced that the organization will be donating $1200 1:1 matching grant to the Skowhegan History House Museum & Research Center for collection protection.

Funding for this project was made possible through the sponsorship of Eunice Farnsworth – Ruth Heald Cragin Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, located in Skowhegan.

Skowhegan History House Museum & Research Center is a repository of items dating back to our town’s early settlement days (ca. 1772) and they are part of the original

Louise Coburn collection.

Preserving these archival materials is crucial to preserving our founder’s legacy as well as her vision of protecting and conserving Skowhegan’s unique cultural heritage.

This DAR supported project provides funding for preservation-based, acid-free storage materials to re-house fragile leather bound books, ledgers, pamphlets and newspapers.

5 Simple Secrets to Rid the Muffin Top and Belly Bulge Jodi Cornelio

Now that we have hopefully packed away our baggy, bulky winter clothes, it’s time for swim suits and short shorts and nobody wants to haul out their summer clothes and discovery that they don’t fit anymore. Worst yet find that the extra weight went to the hips and belly.

Yikes!

Here are a 5 ways to avoid the dreaded muffin top and belly bulge.

1. Exercise while you sit: A lot of sitting causes the muscles in the abdominal area to relax and atrophy which, in turn, enhances the belly budge.

Many of us are required to sit 8 hours a day at our jobs and that’s something you can’t avoid but there are specific things that you can do while sitting.

One is to sit up straight and suck your belly in.

That alone is great exercise for tightening all of your core muscles.

Over time we all have a tendency to slouch when sitting a lot. Every hour take a body check to see if you are sitting straight with shoulders back and stomach tucked in. Practice this at work.

2. Less sitting and more standing, squatting and walking: Although you may have to sit 8 hours a day at your job there are still 16 hours left in the day where you can take a 30 to 60 minute power walk or any other type of cardio vascular exercise.

I choose walking because most anyone can do it and it really helps thin the hip and belly areas. Just make sure you

are walking at a fast pace so that you are huffing and puffing a little and squeeze and contract all your lower body muscles with each stride.

Hold your stomach in too, but don’t forget to breathe.

Performing a few squats or walking lunges along your walk will get your heart pumping and will rev up your metabolism for an extra health bonus.

3. Eliminate the stress

in your life: Recent studies have proven that people who carry a lot of stress call on hormones in the body that actually bloat the belly.

To avoid this, try to find an outlet for your stress.

This is different for all of us. A stress release for you could be self-talk, simply telling yourself that you can’t fix it just now so push aside or flush it until there is a time when you can do something about it.

Other methods of escaping stress are Yoga, listening to relaxing music, watching the lake, deep breathing, reading a book or exercising.

Some thing’s we just can’t change, so why carry them around with you all day. Give yourself permission to let go for your belly’s sake.

4. Over eating: Continuously overeating is hard on the digestion process and helps create a belly budge. There is never a need to overeat or stuff ourselves, save it for that once a year holiday meal.

It’s true that our eyes are bigger than our bellies.

Try this, when reaching for that extra serving, step back grab a doggy bag and save it. Tell yourself that you can have it later.

Pour a glass of water instead. Typically you won’t want it later but if you do shoot for two hours later allowing your previous meal to digest.

5. Exercise the muffin

top area while watching TV: My favorite exercise for the muffin top area is side leg lifts. They are easy and you can do it while you are watching the evening news. Just lay on your side in a jack knife position, up on one elbow.

Lift your leg towards the ceiling 20 to 30 times.

Be careful not to let your rib cage sag towards to floor and make sure your hips are rolled forward.

You want to feel a slight burn in the hips, thigh and waistline area. Take a break and repeat. Make sure you get the other side too.

Note: you can also perform this exercise standing next to your desk at work when taking your breaks. It’s a simple side leg lift.

Mr. Doty is a 2007 graduate of Skowhegan Area High School and in 2011 graduated, sum cum laude, from the University of Maine with a BA in English/Political Science.

He also has earned a Master of Arts with distinction from Birkbeck, University of London in 2012

focusing on Modern and Contemporary Literature.

Researching, assembling, and presenting information, especially historical information, is something Ben enjoys. History, policy, writing, and politics are the subject areas in which he has the most experience as exhibited by his candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives in 2010.

While in elementary school in Cornville, Ben coauthored a booklet on several of the holdings at the

History House and worked on projects associated with the History House while in the Skowhegan Middle School.

Mr. Doty currently works at the Margaret Chase Smith Library as an Archives Volunteer and as an Archive Assistant Intern at the Kennebec Historical Society in Augusta. He has a strong interest in archival practices and has developed strengths in the use of technology.

SCTC Honors 177 Graduates

The Somerset Career & Technical Center’s Annual Final Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 23, in the Skowhegan Area High School Gymnasium. The gymnasium was filled to seating capacity with parents, relatives, and guests (of over 700 attending) of the 177 graduating career and technical education students.

Skowhegan Area High School Band under the direction of Jennifer Fortin provided musical selections.

Director David Dorr and staff members recognized the outstanding students for the school year and awarded $13,000 in scholarship monies.

Farm to Farm 5K The Ladies of the Athens Victory Club are proud to announce the 6th season of the Farm to Farm 5K race series.

The races take place each Tuesday at the scenic Sites Strawberry Farm in Athens. The course follows the quiet country road out to the Hall Farm and back.

A $3.00 registration is taken in between 5:05 pm and 5:55 pm. Start time for the race begins at 6:00 pm rain or shine.

Kids under 10 run, walk or ride free.

Hand made ribbons are awarded to the top 3 finishers in four categories: Male Runners, Female Runners, Walkers and Pre-High Schoolers.

A $25 New Balance gift certificate is drawn weekly and all racers are eligible to win.

Each race has its own theme and racers are encouraged to dress ac-

cordingly. The weekly themes are related to “This Day In History.”

This year we hope to exercise our minds as well as our bodies with Jeopardy style answers and questions.

Instead of raffling a weekly prize as we did last year we will draw for a quilt created with the fabrics of this season’s ribbon material.

This will be done on our last race on August 21st.

Racers and spectators are eligible and receive one free chance if they come wearing something theme related and can accumulate as many as ten.

Additional chances may be purchased for $1.00 each.

The Victory Club will hold 3 Kids’ Ks this season, the first on July 25th, July 16th and August 13th.

Children under 5 must be accompanied by an

adult for the race and all children are the responsibility of the adult who brings them.

Strollers are welcome but folks are asked to leave their bikes and dogs at home. We look forward to another grand season of fun and fitness.

As a part of the Madison Memorial Day parade and services, cadets of NCB39 Battalion, US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, in conjunction with members of the American Legion Post 39 and the VFW Post 7865, conducted a POW/MIA Table for One Presentation at the Madison Public Library.

Ron Page, the Post 39 Americanism Officer, narrated the ceremony while the cadets set seven specific items on the table, one at a time. An estimated 200 spectators witnessed this significant event.

Mr. Page explained that the small table is a place of honor. It is set for one and is our way of symbolizing that members of our profession of arms are missing from our midst.

They are commonly called P.O.W.'s or M.I.A.'s;

Spectrum Generations Seeks Volunteers

Did you know that just a few hours of your time, once a week, can help a senior remain in their home?

Spectrum Generations Somerset Community Center is seeking volunteer drivers to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors and disabled adults in Somerset County out of its Skowhegan office starting immediately.

Drivers are needed to assist with coverage of the following routes: Solon/Embden, Skowhegan, Bingham,

Jackman, Madison/Norridgewock, Hartland/St Albans, and Pittsfield routes.

Applications for back-up drivers are always accepted.

Drivers are reimbursed for mileage.

“We have 11 seniors in Bingham, 8 in Jackman, 23 in Hartland and St. Albans, 31 in Skowhegan, 16 in the Pittsfield area and 26 seniors on our Madison/Norridgewock route that are in jeopardy of going without food if we do not find volunteer drivers and back up drivers

to deliver,” says Nutrition Coordinator Ryan Poirier.

“If meals are not delivered, some of these residents will go hungry.”

ranging from natural horsemanship techniques, western, jumping, and at liberty riding.

She has experience working with a variety of breeds including Arabians, Morgans, Thorougbreds, Andalusians, Warmbloods, Friesians, and more.

She is currently studying to become an FEI dressage rider and is working on attaining her USDF bronze medal and judging scores on her upper level Dutch Warmblood â&#x20AC;&#x153;Risicoâ&#x20AC;?.

NPEQ has limited stalls available for boarding and currently have two openings. They started boarding due to the high demand of reliable care.

V. Paul Reynolds There are deer hunters, and then there are Big Buck Hunters. Most of us are deer hunters. In Maine, there are just a few truly Big Buck Hunters.

From what I have seen, you can count the consistent trophy whitetail slayers on one hand. Because I am one of the former, and I write about the outdoors as well, these deer hunters who excell at their craft have always aroused my curiosity. I talk to them. I read their books.

Hal Blood, a guide and outfitter who owns Cedar Ridge Outfitters, is one of these accomplished buck hunters.

He has earned his notoriety in the deer hunting community by consistently bagging big bruiser bucks year after year.

During a radio interview recently, on my Sunday night radio program, Maine Outdoors, I talked

with Hal. "What makes a big buck hunter," I asked. "How," I inquired, "do your hunting tactics or general approach to the hunt differ from the rest of us who call ouselves deer hunters?"

Hal answered my question with a deer story. Last fall he tracked a big buck in the snow. Shortly thereafter he came upon the boot print of another hunter tracking the same buck.

Hal knew from experience that the majority of hunters will stay on a track just so long. Either they run out of steam or they decide that the buck is taking them into the deep woods too far or into a boggy hellhole they want no part of.

Sure enough, Hal's fellow tracker decided the better of it and left the track. Hal stayed with it, and three hours later he got his shot at the manyantlered whitetail and put it down for good.

Persistence paid dividends. Not rocket science, just perseverance, determination and a will to win.

The Blood perspective goes something like this: 1. Historically, Maine biologists and wildlife researchers just don't spend enough time in the woods, the real world.

Recently, during a chat with Lee Kantar and Kyle Ravana - Maine's moose and deer biologists respectively - Hal told them that one of the state's designated deer yards near Jackman hasn't seen a wintering deer in 20 years! The active deer yards are not even on the state's research radar!

2 Maine's important moose population has been mismanaged for years precisely because there has never been reliable population data.

He argues that an excess of moose can be blamed for the winter tick outbreak that took so many animals a few years back. (He argues that we had many more moose than we figured and could have been operating with much higher harvest quotas.)

3. Kantar is starting to get a handle on true moose numbers with his

winter aerial surveys.

If, indeed, we do have a statewide population of 76,000 moose then our fall harvest quota should be double what it is. He notes that we customarily take 10 percent of our deer and bear annually with no concurrent deleterious effect on populations. So why not harvest 10 per cent of our moose?

Hal is trying to convince moose biologist Lee Kantar that Maine's moose hunting season should be spread out over four weeks, not only to better distribute the hunting pressure, but to minimize friction between moose hunters and bird hunters during October.

Tyler Dunn, age 12, is a 7th grade student at Waterville Jr. High who has been diagnosed with a very rare congenital heart defect called an Anomalous Right Coronary Artery with a left take off. It requires an extensive open heart surgery to correct. On August 1st Tyler will be having surgery at the Boston Children’s Hospital to correct the defect. Family and

It is Spring! The baby birds are hatching and the mammals are being born. This time of year especially, we get many calls asking “What do I do when I discover an abandoned baby?” The one thing you do not want to do is attempt to raise it!

There are many reasons for this advice. First, it is illegal to possess any wild animal without the proper permits. Second, raising a wild baby requires much more than putting a nipple in its mouth.

So what should you do if you find a baby bird that has fallen from its nest? If

it looks sick or hurt, call a rehabilitator, state wildlife agency or wildlife veterinarian. If not, locate the nest and put the baby back inside, then observe from a distance to see if its parents are nearby. If you cannot find its nest, make a substitute by pok-

ing holes in the bottom of a berry basket or margarine tub, line it with dry grass or pine needles and hang from a nearby tree, then watch for the parents.

ling, it may be hopping on the ground – its normal behavior. As long as there are no cats or dogs around, it is OK to leave it; if the bird could be endangered on the ground, however, put it in some bushes or on the branch of a tree. If you find a baby duck, goose, quail or killdeer that is injured, call a rehabilitator right away. If it is not injured but may be abandoned, observe to see if the mother appears within an hour before calling.

Likewise for baby mammals, if you find a baby that appears sick or hurt, call us for help. If it looks healthy but may be abandoned, try to return it to its nest or den, or place it in a shallow box near where it was found, then

observe it out of sight for four to six hours (mothers won’t return if they see humans nearby). Finally, call for assistance if the mother doesn’t return.

To replace baby bunnies in a nest, look for a shallow depression lined with grass and fur for them and cover them lightly with grass to hide them. Leave the area. Mothers return only at dawn and dusk.

Healthy bunnies that are 4 to 5 inches long and able to hop, with eyes open and ears up, do not need help.

Mothers of fawns and seal pups normally leave their babies to go off and feed.

Unless the baby looks distressed or other animals are around, leave the baby alone.

Before attempting to rescue a wild bird or mam-

mal, seek guidance from a wildlife rehabilitator.

The birds we rehabilitate at our Wildlife Care Center are ducks, geese and wild turkeys. For all other species of birds, please call Avian Haven at 207382-6761. Of course, we accept all mammals. The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife’s motto is “If you care, leave it there.”

Outer Banks: More Than Sun and Sand
