Stewart Public Library Celebrates 100 Years

Banner announces Stewart Public Library’s year-long celebration of 100 years of volunteers operating the library at this location overlooking the Carrabassett River in North Anson.

Celebrating 100 years at 37 Elm Street, Stewart Public Library recently held an open house complete with food, games, slide shows and drawings. Directors Bev Tripp and Carol McLaughlin provided a colorful setting of food for the public and t-shirts for library volunteers. Librarian Emily Quint was joined by volunteers Margaret Adams, Betsy

Burpee, Rainbow Cornelia, Kelly Garland, Carol McLaughlin, Marjorie Morrell, Nancy Morrell, SLA Pres. Mitchell Quint, and Bev Tripp. Drawings were won by C. Decker, B. Tripp, C. Long, N. McLean, and L. Atwood. In earlier times the building known as the Anson Public Library was housed in a small building on what was then known

as the Village Green, located on land by what is now known as the Methodist Church/Masonic lot. The APL was established in 1899 by the North Anson Library Association after a minister sent letters to citizens suggesting a library was needed in the village. This building was later known as the Foster Public Library, to honor the family of Ben and Charles Foster, local artists. The Board was looking for a larger building when this building burned in the disastrous 1913 fire of the North Anson village. At the instigation of Judge Augustus Simmons and Mrs. Geneva Hilton, the Honorable D.D. Stewart offered the sum of $1,500 for the purchase of the present building, provided it was named “Stewart Public Library” honoring his brother. Thus the Stewart Public Library was established in 1913.

D.D. Stewart and his brother were lawyers, originally from Corinna, Maine, and Levi left his fortune to be distributed to colleges and libraries. D.D. Stewart was known in this area as he was a lawyer involved with the railroad coming to town. D.D. Stewart built a library in Corinna (the Stewart Free Library) and a town hall in St. Albans, Maine and gave them to each town under his brother’s direction. Today Stewart Public Library has an automated catalog system, computers for public use, wi-fi allowing access to the internet from inside/outside the building. It’s still an all-volunteer library offering new books, audio books, DVDs, and magazines for public use. The library is open Wednesdays 2:30 to 6:00 p.m., Saturdays 2:30 to -4:30 p.m. or by appointment. n
