In Level 7, Sarah Klein, age 12, placed fourth on bars and beam, seventh on vault, tenth on floor with an eighth place all-around.

In Level 6, Faith Potter, age 14, placed first on beam and bars, second on floor, third on vault with a first place all-around. Myia Linck, age 13, placed second on beam, third on bars, fourth on vault, fifth on floor with a third place allaround. A sixth place team trophy was awarded to Level 6.

In Level 4, Abby Green, age 9, placed third on vault, fifth on bars, sixth on beam, eighth on floor with a fifth place all-around. Kyleigh Rose, age 9, placed seventh on beam, ninth on vault and tenth on bars with an

eleventh place all-around.

In Level 4, Aryona Christiansen, age 10, placed fifth on bars and beam, sixth on vault with a ninth place allaround. Emily Cormier, age 10, placed sixth on vault and eleventh on bars.

The YMCA Regional Gymnastics meet was held May 15-16 in Glens Falls, NY. Three gymnasts from Oxford Hills qualified to compete with 44 teams from throughout New England, New York and New Jersey.

In Level 7: Sarah Klein placed twelfth on beam. In Level 6 Faith Potter placed third on beam and twelfth on floor. In Level 4 Abby Green placed second on beam and tenth on bars with a sixth place all-around.

Summer Breakfasts

The Wilkins Community House, located on Plummer Hill Road behind the Village Green in Waterford Flat, will offer its 55th year of summer breakfasts. Breakfast will be on July 16th, 30th and Aug 13. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 am to 10:00 am. The menu will offer scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, our famous home-made muf-

fins, donut holes, orange juice and coffee. The cost for this fantastic breakfast is just $6.00, children 5 to 10 are $3.00 and all children under 5 eat free!

The Wilkins House Committee is a non-profit organization that oversees the upkeep of the Wilkins Community House, which is available for community and private events. n

The annual ice cream social for the Swingin Bears Square Dance Club and their square dancing friends will be Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 7-10 PM at Oxford Hills Middle School, Pine St., South Paris. John Thompson, the club caller, will be calling Mainstream alternating with Plus level and Carol Stewart will cue the Round Dancing. The opportunity to make your own sundae will be at intermission. Casual dress is suggested for this summer dance.

Swingin Bears Square Dance Club

The collection of over fifty vehicles includes one of the world’s finest assemblages of Packards.

The Packard collection features Dietrich V-windshield body styles and LeBaron Vwindshield body styles on the Packard 12 chassis for 1932-34, the one-off frontwheel-drive prototype sedan, a 1906 Model S touring car and other specialty Packards.

The collection highlights American Classics such as Duesenbergs, V-16 Cadillac, Stutz, Graham-Paige, and Auburn 12; foreign Classics such as Delahaye, Isotta Fraschini, HispanoSuiza, Mercedes-Benz and Alfa-Romeo; and an eclectic grouping of brass-era cars (including two electric

cars), a Tucker, a HarleyDavidson and later-model sports cars. Along with the vehicles there is an antique doll and toy collection, horse-drawn carriages, player piano, old phonographs, table-top instruments and a jukebox.

Founder’s Day festivities include music, entertainment and a crafts fair. The charity event is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 9 am to 4 pm on the Paris Hill Green, rain or shine. Donations for admission to The Bahre Collection are $10 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. All proceeds from admissions will support the Hamlin Library and Museum.

Norway Library Story Times

The Children’s Room at Norway Memorial Library will continue its weekly story times for infants, toddlers and preschoolers throughout the summer.

Preschool Story Times, for children aged 2-6 and their caregivers, is held on Wednesdays at 10:30 am.

Quilt Show

The Chickadee Quilters will present their 30th annual show on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 at the Stevens Brook Elementary School, which is located directly off of Route 302 in Bridgton. The hours are 10 to 4. Featured at the show will be at least 100 quilts of all sizes, mini to wall hangings to bed size. There will be a vendor area, demonstrations on both days, a yard sale table, a Chinese auction table, and a beautiful raffle quilt. There will also be a display of aprons and a display of small quilt blocks being made by members of the Chickadee quilters for Dear Jane Quilts. The original Dear Jane Quilt is on display in Vermont and a group of Chickadees are hard at work making their own 200 + block quilts out of Civil War reproduction fabrics. The Lions Club will be on site selling refreshments. Be sure to come to the show, which many consider to be a highlight of the summer season. n

Salads used to always come before the entrée.

Made mostly with greens and vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, celery, tomato and olives, they were dressed with vinaigrette made with mustard oil and vinegar, some with a touch of honey. In Europe, they served salad at the end of the meal, with a wedge of cheese. The Waldorf-Astoria hotel was well known for their Waldorf salad, made with celery, walnuts, and apples with a sweet dressing. Then there are the picnic salads made with potatoes, eggs and onions. The Caesar salad is made of romaine lettuce and a dressing made with raw eggs. The chef salad is a luncheon special made

with chicken, ham or boiled eggs.

In 1971 the salad bar became popular in moderately priced restaurants.

The bar had a little of everything – fresh vegetables, fruits, even pasta salads or nuts. When I think of salads, I think of summer and picnics and of the Fourth of July. As kids we looked forward to building a fire in the big outdoor fireplace and just as soon as it was dark, we had fireworks. There was always homemade root beer and watermelon.

Back then watermelon was only available in the middle of summer. Now it can be found year-round in most supermarkets.

FRUIT DIP 2 Cup Sugar 1 Cup Light Corn Syrup ½ Cup Cold Water 1 Cup Butter 2 Cup Walnuts or Peanuts 1 tsp Baking Soda

1 Tbsp Chopped Olives Mix all ingredients together and pour over salad.

This goes well over any mixed green and vegetable salad.

APPLE SALAD 6 Apples, peeled and diced ½ Cup Chopped Nuts (I use walnuts but any will do.) ½ Cup Diced Celery ½ Cup Raisins Dressing ¾ Cup Mayonaisse 1 Tbsp Vinegar ¼ Cup Sugar Place apples, nuts, celery and raisins in a bowl. Mix together dressing ingredients and pour over salad.

COPPER PENNIES 2 lbs Carrots, cut in rounds like pennies 1 Chopped Green Pepper 2 Chopped Onion 1 Can Tomato Soup ½ Cup Salad Oil 1 Cup Sugar ¾ Cup Vinegar 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce 1 Tsp Prepared Mustard Salt and Pepper to taste Alternate layers of carrots, peppers and onions.

Make a sauce with the soup, oil, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt and

pepper. Mix well and heat.

Pour over the vegetables and refrigerate overnight.

The longer it sits, the better the flavor. It will keep a month if refrigerated. Also very good hot, served with a meat entrée.

CUCUMBER SALAD 3-4 Cucumbers, thinly sliced 1 tsp Salt 1 Small Onion, thinly sliced 1 8oz container Sour Cream 3 Tbsp Vinegar 1 Tbsp Sugar 2 Tbsp Cream (or half and half or milk) Pepper to taste Mix all ingredients together and refrigerate 20-30 minutes.

together. In separate bowl, combine ham, celery, bacon and place on a bed of lettuce. Pour dressing atop.

You can add peas or shredded carrots if you wish.

This is the month we celebrate Independence Day, the Fourth of July, so how about a red, white and blue salad!

RED, WHITE AND BLUE SALAD 2 -3 oz Packages of Strawberry Jell-O 2 Cups Water 1 Small Can, Crushed Pineapple, drained but save the juice 2 Cups Blueberries Dissolve gelatin in two cups boiling water. Add pineapple juice and enough water to make another cup.

Place sugar, syrup and water in a heavy pan and heat until it boils. Then add the butter. Over medium heat, stir for 10 minutes. If you have a candy thermometer, let rise to 240 degrees.

Grease and warm 2 cookie sheets in a 200-degree oven.

Stir in nuts and continue stirring the mixture until the thermometer reaches 300 degrees. It will be light and frothy. Remove cookie sheets from the oven. Carefully pour the candy mixture into the warmed cookie sheets. With a buttered spatula, spread the candy to ¼ inch thick. Let it cool and then break into pieces.

Nothin’ But Small Talk…Maine’s Horse Community Comes Together Jess Small

From Thursday, June 17, until Sunday, June 21, the rain couldn’t keep the local horsemen and women from coming out, joining forces, and celebrating some of Maine’s finest riders and horses at the 30th annual Downeast Horse Show Congress hosted by the Maine Horse Association.

The three-day horse show, featuring 207 classes, began on Friday, and brought people from near and far with many different breeds of horses, totaling 161, that started arriving on Thursday to prepare. Morgans, Arabians, Quarter Horses, Appaloosas, Saddlebreds, Standardbreds, Friesians, Gypsy Vanners, Percherons, Georgian Grandes, Thoroughbreds, Hackney ponies, Miniature horses… and many more came out in style promoting their 8 lbs. Elizabeth Tewksbury and her Standardbred mare, Dreamy Starlet, had tons of fun participating in the Standardbred in hand and under saddle classes at the Downeast Horse Show, as well as in the hunter over fences classes, showing off the athleticism of the Standardbred breed.

The Standardbred horse has a rich history in Maine, and today there is a big push for retraining Standardbred racehorses for pleasure riding, so the Downeast welcomed them to their show this year. Standardbreds returned to the DEHC in great numbers after a long absence from the show.

were new in 2009 and were a huge hit, too. Sunday was a tribute to Father’s Day with a free breakfast for all, a fathers’ walk-trot and lead line class, and a Father’s Day essay contest.

It was great to see all breeds of horses and riders coming together to help support the Maine Horse Association effort to raise money for their Equine Park; all profits from the show go into that fund.

Q. I have to have cataract surgery and I'm a little frightened. Should I be?

I don't know anyone who isn't a little frightened by surgery of any kind, but cataract removal is one of the safest and most effective types of surgery. It's also one of the most common operations performed in the United States.

About 9 out of 10 people who have the surgery have improved vision.

A cataract is a clouding of the lens, the clear part of the eye that helps focus images like the lens in a camera. Cataracts can blur images and discolor them.

Most cataracts are related to aging. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cata-

ract surgery. There are other causes of cataracts such as diabetes, eye injury, radiation and surgery for other eye problems.

Cataracts tend to worsen gradually. The clear lens slowly changes to a yellowish/brownish color, adding a brownish tint to vision. If you have advanced lens discoloration, you may not be able to identify blues and purples.

The most common symptoms of a cataract are: blurred images, faded colors, glare, poor night vision, double vision, and frequent prescription changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses. If you have any of these symptoms, see your doctor, because they can be signs of other eye problems.

The symptoms of early cataract may be improved with new eyeglasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses. If these measures do not help, surgery is the only effective treatment.

The surgeon removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a plastic lens. Like See Geezer on page 7

A grand mal seizure at about age two was the first frightening clue that Lindsay Carr had a serious medical problem. Lindsay, who just graduated from Lewiston High School, is the youngest of Bob and Dianna Carr’s three daughters. A military family (Navy-20 years) the Nichols Street household has had their share of health crises. With four generations of breast cancer in Dianna’s family, mom had to deal with that herself in 2004/05, and continues to suffer from fibromyalgia. Dad is currently dealing with severe back pain and imminent surgery.

The military doctors in Maryland diagnosed young Lindsay with a rare birth defect known as Arnold Chiari Malformation – Type I. The defect caused her to have severe cranio-cervical instability. In simple terminology, the base of Lindsay’s skull and brainstem are not properly anchored on the top of her backbone; in addition, the opening of the skull is larger than normal and an abnormally tethered spinal cord was also in the mix.

Though their diagnosis was correct, the doctors didn’t know much about Chiari. The family was told that there would likely not be any serious trouble from the defect until Lindsay’s late teens or early twenties.

So mom and dad did not try to overprotect their daughter by restricting her from physical activity. The Carrs had discovered, as have many families dealing with rare medical conditions, it was hard to find a doctor who

So, for a number of years while Lindsay was growing through her school years, she was doing some very physical things like cheerleading.

As the family’s understanding of Chiari increased, they agreed to begin limiting, and in many cases stopping, Lindsay’s physical activity.

They learned that a sudden jolt to her head or neck from a tug-of-war game could turn very serious. Lindsay has never ridden a bicycle because of the difficulties she can have with balance.

She will never ride a roller coaster or any amusement that might jar her spinal column.

The Carrs are grateful for seeing an article in the local newspaper a couple years ago about another Lewiston girl, Nicole Buck, with Chiari Malformation. Upon meeting the Bucks, they learned of The Chiari Institute in New York. Since that time there have been several

trips to the Institute and a great deal more knowledge and direction given to the Carrs.

Above and beyond all the new information and help they’ve received over the last few years, the family will readily testify that their strong Christian faith is what has sustained them. The Carrs are active members of the Kennebec Community Church in Augusta where “…we love the unlovely…” and work and evangelize in the Capitol community.

Lindsay states, “You can’t separate my faith from what I’ve gone through.” She made this assertion clear in a couple of her senior papers at LHS. “I want to be a walking Bible for others to read,” she added. Her oldest sister had started a student-led Bible study at LHS about ten years ago. Lindsay is also a very active member of the Mason-affiliated Rainbow Girls.

She has been an honor roll student but admits to being the world’s worst procrastinator. It has been a rough year with her Chiari acting up and having more surgery in April. She went to New York to have another spinal decompression and cranio-cervical fusion. “I have my moments and days when I’m hurting or stressed and have to just cry, but I’m doing better day by day. I find it best to just go with the flow.” She did make her goal of graduating.

She was wheel chaired into the Colisee by best friend Delila Dickey, but as promised Lindsay walked across the stage to get her diploma.

Delila says, “I have known her for so long we’re pretty much sisters. We can have Geezer, from page 6

Cataract surgery slightly increases your risk of retinal detachment, a serious condition that demands emergency treatment to prevent permanent impairment or even blindness. The retina is a lightsensitive membrane lining the inner eyeball; it is connected to the brain by the optic nerve.

Bernard Fortier, who was the keynote speaker at Lewiston’s graduation this year, was Lindsay’s Latin teacher and friend. “She was always positive and uplifting. We loved having her in class. Though she was suffering difficult circumstances, Lindsay radiated positive energy and warmth. She was also a woman of faith. It was the cornerstone of how she lived her life.”

Lindsay regards her parents as her heroes. She helped her mother during her battle with cancer. In middle

Lindsay Carr is planning to attend St. Joseph’s College in Standish this fall.

Considering her ongoing health challenges, she and the family agree this was a sensible choice. Just far enough from home to ‘feel like you’re away at college’, but close enough to family and physicians familiar with her case. Not surprisingly, she will be aiming for a degree in the medical field, Nursing or possibly Neonatology or Neurology in the future. n

Hebron Academy Honors Tons of Trucks and More…

A Great Success Former Headmaster Allen Students, faculty, administrators and trustees of Hebron Academy gathered under balmy skies recently for the dedication of the school’s new natural turf National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) regulation competition field, an addition to the campus occasioned by the construction of the 54,000-square foot athletic center immediately upslope from the new playing surface.

The naming of the field honors the late headmaster Claude Allen and his wife Eleanor and their years of service to the school. Together, the Allens touched a generation of students and built a strong and lasting foundation for Hebron Academy.

Introducing the dedication ceremony was Head of School John King, who spoke of the creation of the new field from an undeveloped, partially wooded slope and of the value of the new space to the school’s expanding athletic program. The new Allen Field will host fall soccer games and lacrosse games in the spring.

Board of Trustees Chair Reeve Bright went on to describe the man to whom the field was dedicated, the legendary Claude Allen, who served as headmaster of Hebron from 1946 to 1972.

A student at the time of Allen’s tenure, Bright recalled the former headmaster as a commanding presence whose pronouncements served as both law and lesson on campus. He also offered several impressions of the much-beloved leader, evoking appreciative laughter from those among the gathering who knew him.

Jane Allen Smith, daughter of Claude and Eleanor Allen, represented her siblings Tom Allen of South Paris, and Connie Allen Eastburn of Doylestown, PA. She expressed their appreciation for the dedication, and spoke of the nearly 30-year commitment her parents had made to Hebron Academy and its students.

Also present was Hebron alumnus John McGonagle ’61, who spoke of the abiding affection of those who knew Allen and the era he came to represent at the school.

Hebron Academy was founded in 1804 and is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school that serves grades six through postgraduate. The Academy's mission is to inspire and guide students to reach their highest potential in mind, body, and spirit.

This year’s event at the Child Health Center was called Tons of Trucks and More. Businesses from the area were invited to come to the center and meet parents and their children to share activities that pertained to their mission. New Balance came and talked about proper shoe fit while measuring children’s feet, Wal Mart’s gardening manager brought potting soil and seeds for parents and children to plant and take home, and Norway Savings Bank was available to talk with parents about savings accounts for their children.

The outside grounds were also abuzz with Oxford firemen who brought a truck along and an Oxford police officer who had his vehicle.

A huge plow truck was on site as well The children had a great time climbing in and on all of the vehicles.

In addition the Masons were on hand to do child identification kits for fami-

lies. Each family left with digital finger prints, photos and other identifying information for their child for easy identification in an emergency.

The nice thing about this event was that the staff made sure that there was something for the adults too. Jeff Orwig, caretaker for the Bahre Auto Collection, brought four antique cars down the hill for everyone to get a close look at and enjoy. It was a chance for many of the parents and grandparents to think back to our younger days and share memories with the children.

The Child Health Center opened their new Child Care Program in November of 2007 at 16 Madison Avenue in Oxford. Since then they have opened their doors to the community for family events several times a year. Staff from the Specialized Pediatric Therapy Services, previously known as Developmental Therapy, also help out at many of these events. The next event in the works is the Oxford Hills Fire Prevention & Safety Fair in collaboration with the local fire departments. This event is planned for October 17th and will be held in the old Ames Parking lot, continuing onto Madison Avenue and into the Child Health Center’s parking lot and the center itself. We invite you all to attend. Last year was the first time this event was held and it was fun for all.

This year the plans are for a bigger and better event with lots of demonstrations.

There are many things the average person can do to lower their cholesterol and keep cholesterol at healthy levels. Lowering your cholesterol can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke, and knowing that you are taking action to better your health is a satisfying and gratifying feeling.

In order to do this, it is first helpful to understand what cholesterol is and where it comes from. Our liver produces the majority of the cholesterol in our bodies from the foods that we eat. Fat from the food that we eat is digested and sent to the liver to be processed. The liver takes the fat and makes cholesterol bundles, which contain fat, cholesterol and some proteins. We call these lipoproteins. The job of these lipoproteins is to transport fat to different areas of the body. There are three different types of lipoproteins.

VLDL (very low density lipoproteins) LDL (low density lipoproteins) and HDL (high density lipoproteins).

The VLDL starts the process by carrying the bundles out of the liver through the blood vessels. After the VLDL unloads most of its fat, it turns into LDL and continues to travel through the vessels. LDL is referred to as the bad cholesterol because they are stubborn and lazy and tend to lie down on the job and cling to the vessel walls, narrowing these blood vessels.

Narrow blood vessels lead to increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. The HDL’s job is to corral these LDL and give them a lift back to the liver to be repackaged for proper distribution. As in any manufacturing production process, you want to decrease your low performers (LDL) and

On Saturday, July 18th join with the Fox School Farmers’ Market in celebrating their second season; watch the market come alive with festive cheer. The market is located at 10 East Main Street in Paris and is open Saturdays from 8 am to noon from now until October.

The Fox School Farmers’ Market is a great place to meet and mingle with friends and neighbors.

fresh donut, or a multitude of other home-baked goodies. It’s one stop shopping for dinner from salad ingredients, veggies, fresh seafood, to dessert!

Waterford World’s Fair

Seth Bell brought this John Deere 2010 back to life for his Senior project from White Mountain Community College, Berlin NH. Seth graduated this spring with a degree in Mobile Equipment Technology. Tractors like this John Deere will be seen at the World's Fair.

This year’s Waterford World's Fair will be July 1719, 2009. This agricultural community event became known as the World's Fair around 1900. Through the years the World's Fair has seen many acts, canivals, displays, demonstrations, livestock contests and people selling their wares.

In 2007 Waterford World's Fair was voted Most Improved Small Agricultural Fair in the State

of Maine. This year the World's Fair Association continues to add new activities and events to the fair. The variety of musical entertainment is sure to be enjoyed by all. There will be valuable information at the small farm workshops held daily. As in the earlier years of the fair, there will be farmers competing with their livestock in a variety of contests. Contests of the more recent times will find

ladies throwing skillets, men working up a sweat in the couch potato, and the Hee Man contest. The Antique Tractor pull is returning to the World's fair this year, reminding us of years gone by.

There will be plenty for the kids to do. There will be crafts to make, contests to enter and games to play.

The famous Soak-the-Dope is always a hit. Ride in a horse drawn wagon, climb the wall, ride the ponies, jump in the bounce house and on the trapeze and stuff yourself into a barrel and ride behind an antique tractor.

For those that have a special knack for cooking, there are cooking contest for all to enter. Plan to give your favorite blueberry pie, apple pie, whoopie pie recipes a try. Do you stir up a potato salad that gets great reviews? Enter them at the World's Fair. You may be surprised by some of the judges.

Plan to attend the fair on the hill that overlooks the White Mountains. Waterford World's Fair is the place to meet this summer. n

Market Square Residents Bowl For Kids’ Sake

Norman Doughty, resident at the Market Square Health Care Center, was the top individual fundraiser for the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event in Oxford Hills. He was one of about thirty residents who took part in the fundraiser, which supports the Child Health Center’s Big Broth-

ers Big Sisters Program in Oxford Hills. This was the second year that residents at the center took part in this event. Everyone had a great time. Many of the residents bowled in the activities room in the more traditional manner with bowling pins and balls while others, including Norman, took to the more modernized version of bowling, “Wii Bowling”.

Altogether they raised over $582. Everyone could be seen proudly wearing their Bowl For Kids’ Sake Tshirts that afternoon along with a great big smile.

The afternoon was not only fun for the residents, it was a great time for the Big Brother Big Sister Coordi-

nators as well. They spent the afternoon cheering on the bowlers and handing out door prizes that had been donated by local businesses.

The Child Health Center has been offering mentoring programs in the Oxford Hills Community for over 15 years. Programs include site-and community-based mentoring programs. The site-based program matches Volunteer Big Brothers and Sisters, who are high school students and adults, with children in the local schools. These matches meet four hours a month.

They have the opportunity to meet once a week at the school for one hour or they can take part in monthly events at the high school or other specified locations. In the communitybased program adult Bigs are matched with Littles in the community who are age 8-13. These matches meet for a minimum of 6 hours a month and participate in a wide variety of activities in the community.

Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation Members Meet

Dr. Barry Blumenfeld Members of the Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation (SCHF) met on Wednesday, May 20th in the Harper Conference Center at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Robert Harmon, chair of the Western Maine Health (WMH) Board, welcomed

the group of attendees and led the business meeting which included entertaining nominations for two members of the Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation Board. Holly Brown and Scott Stone were nominated and successfully elected to the board. Harmon

also welcomed and thanked the following new “Legacy Circle” members: Peter and Katherine Bonney, Timothy and Donna Churchill, Richard and Wendy Penley, and William Stockwell.

The Legacy Circle honors those who have made bequests or other estate gifts for the future support of Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Timothy A. Churchill, president and chief executive officer of WMH, presented the 2008 Annual report highlights as well as outlining the goals for 2009 before he introduced speaker Barry Blumenfeld, MD, MS, the chief information officer for MaineHealth and Maine Medical Center.

Dr. Blumenfeld has more than 15 years of experience in health information systems design, development and implementation.

Dr. Blumenfeld is responsible for leading the development and implementation of a strategic information

systems and technology plan for the health system and will be the key system resource for setting policy, procedure and standards for the information systems that support MaineHealth’s member organizations.

At the meeting, Blumenfled addressed the benefits and challenges of the Electronic Medical Record and Health Information Exchange as well as how these two healthcare information technologies are critical to future quality of care and controlling rising healthcare costs.

Donna was a night shift supervisor at the hospital during her tenure.

Cook shares, “Donna has successfully dealt with a wide variety of people and issues unique to nights.

We will miss her, but appreciate her need for more sunshine, sleep, and fun.”

Boy Scouts to Honor Les Otten with “Spirit of Dirigo” Award Dinner

On October 22, 2009, 175 distinguished guests will gather in South Paris to honor Maine businessman Les Otten for his contributions to the economy, environment, and for reflecting the pioneer spirit of our great state. On March 20 of this year the "Spirit of Dirigo" award committee met and began the process of selecting this year's recipient from outstanding citizens within Abnaki District, which includes the majority of Oxford and Androscoggin Counties. By April the committee had unanimously nominated and selected Western Maine

resident Les Otten for this recognition and began planning an exceptional evening for the presentation.

Otten graduated from Ithaca College School of Business in 1971; he then began working for Killington and Sunday River ski resorts. In 1980 he purchased Sunday River, and established his company LBO Resort Enterprises acquiring Sugarbush, Attitash Bear Peak, and Cranmore Mountain Resort. In 1995 American Skiing Company was launched including S-K-I resorts; Killington, Mount Snow, Haystack, Waterville Valley, and Sug-

arloaf/USA. Since resigning as CEO of ASC in 2001, Otten has been involved in many other business enterprises including his role in the purchase of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox in 2002. For the following five years, Otten was vice chairman and a partner in that ownership group. In 2004, the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series Championship since 1918 with Otten as an owner of the franchise.

Les Otten is currently board chairman for The Jeremiah Cromwell Disabilities Center. He started a

new company, Maine Energy Systems, in May, 2008.

This company promotes the sales and distribution of wood pellets and pelletfired boilers.

Norway Memorial Library has planned a summer series of book discussions and programs for adults related to the works of William Shakespeare.

Beginning Tuesday, June 23 at 7:00pm with “Views from a Bard,” participants will have opportunities to learn about Shakespeare through a variety of methods. “Views from a Bard” will feature film clips from a number of Shakespeare plays allowing for comparison of the many ways the same words have been interpreted and performed.

This program will be presented by Cynthia Reedy.

Cynthia teaches science and languages at Hebron Academy and describes herself as a “life-long admirer of the man with the golden quill.”

Although a veteran of many OHMPAA productions, she has never had the opportunity to act in a Shakespeare play, but believes “Hope springs eternal. I’m too old to play Juliet but Gertrude is still looking good!”

Future programs will be a one-hour performance of “Macbeth” on Tuesday, July 14 at 7:00 pm. This abridged version of the play will be performed by two actors and a musician under the direction of Michael

Levine, all from Acorn Productions of Westbrook. On Tuesday, August 4 at 7:00 pm, Sally Jones will present a talk called “Full of Sound and Fury” in which she will share tidbits about the tumultuous lives of the Tudors and Stuarts setting the scene for the times in which Shakespeare lived. Sally is a part-time teacher of drama and journalism at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

The book discussion series includes three contemporary novels, all based on plots of plays by Shakespeare. The readings are “A Thousand Acres” by Jane Smiley based on “King Lear,” “Undiscovered Country” by Lin Enger based on “Hamlet” and “Prospero’s Daughter”

by Elizabeth Nunez based on “The Tempest.” The Discussion of “A Thousand

Acres” will be on Wednesday July 1 at 7:00 pm, “Undiscovered Country will be discussed July 22 at 7:00 pm and “Prospero’s Daughter” will be discussed August 12 at 7:00 pm. The facilitator of these discussions will be Margaret Reimer, PhD. Margaret teaches literature and writing at University of Southern Maine and has taught several courses at the Senior College at Bridgton.

Oxford Hills Christian Academy Drama Class

William Sydney Porter, known by his nom de plume O. Henry, would have been

proud of the way his short stories were presented by a group of five high school

students from Oxford Hills Christian Academy.

The performance, which ran for about 2½ hours, featured the acting talent of Lyz Donovan, Rachel Marston, Steve Corning, Lindsay Ellingwood, and Tony Stevens. The audiences of both Friday and Saturday were intrigued by the twist endings of "One Thousand Dollars" and "While the Auto Waits," and there was much laughter during "Springtime A la Carte" over the portrayals of two old Russian men.

In the second act, the crowd was moved to tears by the sweetly sorrowful tale, "The Last Leaf.”
