By Mark Huard What would you do if you knew 2015 was your last Christmas with your family and friends? Well, for a dear friend of Kringleville in Waterville, his last Christmas came far too soon. Kevin Dutil will not be forgotten for his generosity in making Kringleville what it is today through his tireless efforts to spread Christmas cheer to all.

On July 25, 2015, his close friends and family celebrated Christmas in his memory. The group spread Christmas cheer for Kevin by singing Christmas carols at neighboring camps of Sue and Rick Dutil’s lake house on China Lake.

You could hear Rudolph, Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas across Pine Point. Some carolers laughed more than they sang, because of the sheer joy of the wonderful time they were having.

There was instant snow for the children and you could see Frosty, Santa, holly berries and more Christmas themed temporary tattoos just for fun on the party goer’s faces and other places. It was just like the actual holiday, minus the cold temperatures and real snow.

There was a big spread of food, as if it was Christmas day. The Santa Claus cake was both beautiful and delicious. In December, most bake gingerbread men, but at this July event they had gingerbread mermaids.

Maine Poet Stuart Kestenbaum to Read at Vienna Union Hall

VIENNA: An evening with Maine Poet Stuart Kestenbaum, reading from his four collections of poems (Pilgrimage, Prayers and Run-on Sentences, Only Now, and House of Thanksgiving) is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, August 26th at the Vienna Union Hall on the Vienna Mountain Road, just off Route 41 in the village center.

Nothing escapes Kestenbaum’s respectful attention, be it Subarus (“Starting the Subaru at Five Below”), dogs (“I Look Toward Heaven the Way a Dog Looks at a Door”), or mistakes (“Prayer for Mistakes”).

Maine Wildflowers Slide Show

Maine Wildflowers, a slide show presentation

by Paul Johnson, will take place at 7pm, Tuesday, Aug. 18th at the Oakland Public Library, 18 Church St. Prior to retiring in 2005, Paul worked as a fishery biologist for the Maine Department

of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in the Moosehead Lake Region. In his travels throughout the region he was intrigued by the diversity of plant and animal life found in the Maine Woods.

Over the years he captured the things he saw in photographs in order to

share them with others.

His program will highlight some common, as well as some not so common, wildflowers found in Maine’s wetlands, woodlands and open lands.

This is a great opportunity to test your skills at identifying some of Maine’s flora. n

The Belgrade Public Library will be hosting a visit by Maine author Daniel Tortora at the Belgrade Public Library (124 Depot Road Belgrade ME 04917) on Wednesday September 23rd at 6pm-8pm.

Come hear the Assistant Professor of History at Colby College speak about his research of Fort Halifax in Winslow, Maine.

An expert on early American and Native American history, he speaks extensively on the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War eras, leads battlefield and historic tours and has

contributed to numerous films, archaeological projects, websites, exhibits and research projects. In 2011, he was appointed to the Fort Halifax Park Implementation Committee.

Winslow has grown up around Fort Halifax in its many, many incarnations.

Beginning as a French and Indian War garrison and trading post, the fort welcomed historic figures from Benedict Arnold and Aaron Burr to Paul Revere and Chief Joseph Orono. Reduced to one small blockhouse in the 1800s, Fort Halifax hosted

archaeologists, travelers, artists, politicians and students. The Flood of 1987 swept away the blockhouse, leaving the fort and its supporters to fight an uphill battle for reconstruction.

Kaplan Introduces New Human Services Certificate It is predicted that by 2030, 20 percent of the U.S. population will be 65 or older, compared to only 13 percent in 2010.

By 2050, nearly 84 million Americans will be 65 and older—nearly double the estimated population (43 million) in 2012.

As America ages, more and more stress will be placed on healthcare systems and caregivers.

To meet this growing demand for skilled health professionals, Kaplan University’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences has introduced a new Human Services certificate in Elder Care Services.

The College’s certificate offering is further bolstered by the addition of a Human Services

certificate in Child And Family Services.

The new certificates were developed in response to demographic and socioeconomic trends that point to a need for qualified professionals in the human services field over the next decade.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational outlook (2014-2015), social and human services assistant jobs are expected to increase by 22 percent, double the average growth rate for all occupations. These positions are needed to serve the ever-growing 65-andover population, as well as fill the widening gap for child and family welfare services linked to

Kaplan University Announces New Cybersecurity Degrees Cybercrime is a big and growing enterprise that experts say drains about $445 billion from U.S businesses each year. The global impact conservatively exceeds more than $1 trillion annually.

In response to this enormous challenge, many businesses and public agencies are devoting more and more resources to improving their cybersecurity. To help, Kaplan University has added two new degree offerings under the School of Business and Information Technology (IT) – the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Master of Science in

Cybersecurity Management. Kaplan University is among the first online universities to offer these programs reflecting the fast-growing demand for cybersecurity professionals, which is expected to grow by 37 percent by 2022.

“Admit in a Day�at KVCC Albert Wishes for a Home

Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) will hold an “Admit in a Day,� event Thursday, Aug. 20 giving potential students a one-stop option for enrolling in classes for the fall 2015 semester.

The event will be held from 1-5 p.m. in the Lunder Library building at the Fairfield campus of KVCC at 92 Western Ave. Those interested in attending the event should plan to arrive promptly at

1 p.m. Placement exams will begin at 1:30 p.m. and you must be checked in before that time if you plan to take the exam.

Those attending the event will need to bring an official sealed copy of their high school transcript, immunization records, and 2014 federal tax forms and W-2 forms.

Students with previous college credits should also bring a sealed copy of their college transcript(s) for review.

The event is free and open to the public and the application and exam fees will be waived for those attending.

Prospective students will be guided by professional advisors as they take placement exams, fill out applications, apply for financial aid, and are reviewed for admission.

The Community Building Grant Program of the Maine Community Foundation recently awarded 217 grants totaling more than $1.23 million to organizations across Maine.

The total includes $283,484 from donor-advised funds.

The community foundation’s flagship grant program is designed to support activities that strengthen and build communities. The program is one of only a few Maine-based grant programs that serve the

entire state and cover a broad array of interest areas, from animal welfare to youth development.

County and regional committees, composed of local leaders with local knowledge and a commitment to philanthropy, review the applications. Grants range in size from $500 to $10,000.

Summer of 59 As a kid, the first time I ever had to deal with gasoline prices was in the summer of my fourteenth year.

Never mind what summer that was.

It was 1959.

That was the summer my father gave me exclusive use of the family’s 16-foot Novi-built, cedar-on-oak skiff with a 10-hp Evinrude outboard.

My father didn’t actually use the words “exclusive use� when he gave it to me, but I knew what he meant. He wanted me to have the joys and responsibilities of a boat one whole year before I would get my Maine driver’s license and take off in a car for who knows where?

Dad bought me the first tank of gasoline, but all the refills that summer would be my responsibility. I had started cutting lawns and was beginning to learn the power of money.

I can’t remember how long that first tank lasted, but I recall that it didn’t last as long as I had hoped.

wharf, waiting for my turn to gas up. I was wondering where that first tank of fuel had disappeared to. I hadn’t really been anywhere - a few trips to the harbor and a few trips to some islands. That was it. I promised myself then that I’d be more careful with this next tank of fuel.

summers l a t e r , and I’m still wondering where my last tank of fuel went. And now that the purveyors of fuel are getting over $2.74 a gallon for the stuff, the question seems as pertinent now as it was all those years ago at Tink’s wharf.

OK, I’m lying.

I think of doing all those things and occasionally do some of them when I think of it, but my fuel should still last longer than it does. Shouldn’t it?

And while we’re on the subject, why does gasoline cost so much?

Ask the average car-driving citizen why gasoline prices are so high and you’ll most likely get one of several answers. “The oil companies are gouging us.� Or they’ll say, “The gas station owners are making all the money,� or “It’s the Saudis and OPEC - they’re the guilty ones.�

They slow down production and - “poof� - up goes the price.� Some will say gasoline is taxed too much and that’s why it’s so expensive. “Just lower the tax on the stuff and it’ll be a lot cheaper.�

Simple enough.

Politicians say they’d like nothing more than to lower the tax on gasoline but they can’t.

Why? Well, for one thing the gasoline tax is what they use to build and repair all those smooth-as-velvet roads we drive on, roads that more and more people are using and wearing out.

I went home over the Fourth and heard that Tink’s son, Darrel, running the the family business and doing very well. While I was home I drove down to see the new marina and chandlery Darrel built.

As I at there in my car looking at my fuel gauge and wondering where the last tank of fuel went, I couldn’t have been happier for Darrel. n

Why Do I Need Dental X-rays?

By Denise Quinlan, RDH at Lakes Region Dental Center Some people wonder why radiographs (x-rays) are a necessary part of dental appointments. Without X-rays, dental professionals can only see part of the teeth, as the sides and the roots are hidden from view. X-rays help provide a clearer view of your teeth. Digital x-ray images can also be enlarged and enhanced to provide more detail and easier viewing – by both you and your dentist.

Because many parts of the teeth cannot be seen by looking in the mouth, problems such as cavities can go unnoticed without the help of xrays. A cavity that develops on the side of a tooth (where floss cleans) may not be visible until it is quite large. The larger a cavity grows before treatment, the more treatment the tooth may need. X-rays increase a dental professional’s ability to detect while they are small enough to fix with a simple filling. Waiting too long can lead to hearing the words “root canal�, which is usually not something people want to hear!

Dental x-rays are also needed for other pur-

poses besides checking for cavities. Root canal treatment, checking for periodontal (gum) disease, evaluating if you are a candidate for dental implants and even looking for tumors or cysts require X-rays.

Root canal treatment is necessary when the nerve of the tooth is infected. These infections show up on x-rays as dark areas around the tip of the root. An x-ray can confirm the dentist’s diagnosis and can show the extent of damage. Sometimes x-rays are taken during the root canal treatment so the dentist can see if the full nerve canal has been accessed.

Follow-up s-rays show the healing that takes place after treatment has been completed.

Dental x-rays are also useful in determining the extent of periodontal disease. X-rays can show the bone level, as well as heavy calculus (tartar) that is stuck to the teeth.

Dentists and hygienists use a periodontal probe to measure how far under the gum the bone is.

Some people are concerned with the radiation from dental X-rays, but with the advent of digital radiography, the amount of radiation from dental x-rays has decreased by 60-70 percent from traditional film radiographs. A half day outside in the sun exposes you to as much radiation as a full set of digital

People who tend to develop cavities may need to have bite-wing X-rays taken every six months to once a year, until the cavities are under control and they have not had any new cavities for a while. People who have dry mouth or extensive dental work should have more frequent X-rays as well.

For people with a history of gum disease, X-rays are needed to evaluate the bone (support) of the teeth. Kids need X-rays to check on developing teeth. Clark Marine Recognized for Service When Rob Brown measures the success of the service department at Clark Marine, efficiency is only part of what he looks at, because that number can hide bigger problems.

“I am big on employee efficiency, the comparison between flat rate and actual time, though I am bigger on employee proficiency – the comparison between hours paid and hours billed,” Brown said. “If a technician completes a two-hour flat rate job in two hours his efficiency rating is 100 percent – Monster! If it’s the only thing he accomplishes in the eight-hour day, though, not so monster! A 25 percent proficiency rating is too low.”

The goal for Clark Marine is for the senior technicians to have an annual proficiency rate of 60 percent, with junior techs in the mid-40s.

That takes into account the five subpar months of available hours during Maine’s long offseason.

“During employee evaluations I talk one on one with each person in my service operation about their performance over the previous year,” Brown said. “Using the

proficiency reports...we are able to set realistic goals for the coming year and attach financial performance incentives based on correct proficiency increases.”

In-season, the technicians averaged a 100.72 percent efficiency rating and 54.59 proficiency rating in 2013. As Brown points out to the service team, small changes can make big differences in the bottom line.

“If we could increase our team proficiency by just 2 percentage points this would earn the $50,000 we have guaranteed in staff raises for 2014,” he said. “We need to average just 12 more billed hours per week through the year to get there.”

With 22 service employees spread across two locations, it’s important to not just keep a handle on the numbers but also the process and schedule.

Clark has a detailed process map that clearly lays out the service department process. The process maps are included in the company’s employee handbook, and new employees are expected to read and under-

stand the processes before they are set to work on their own. Additionally, new hires spend 10 to 15 days shadowing an established team member when they start.

“When things do not go pretty much to plan we can usually go back and dissect our actions and see where we did not follow guidelines,” Brown said. “I am fully convinced that it is not just our written processes that set us apart from our competitors – it is more so that we actually follow the processes to the letter.”

To better manage workflow, Clark Marine relies on a detailed schedule that Brown refers to as the “company Bible.”

“Better than 95 percent of the service work we perform whether it be from over the counter services or internal repairs and rigging is scheduled,” he said.

“Rigid as it sounds we allow very few drop offs; we will accept them but not before trying to have the customer drop off at a specific time.”

Each repair is assigned to a particular service technician when the appointment is made. Service managers have the responsibility to communicate with both the technician and the cus-

tomer throughout the service process providing instruction, quotes and acknowledgement of completion, as well as for checking the quality of services rendered.

Communication from the service managers to the techs is an important part of Clark’s success.

Every afternoon the service managers make the rounds to each technician listing out with them what their next full day’s schedule will include.

Before employees leave for the day, all boats that are on the property are staged or a workstation is opened up for the incoming appointment boats. Parts are pulled and the repair orders are ready awaiting any further customer comments.

One of the biggest challenges of Maine’s

service team would talk with the customer about possibly performing the repairs over the winter.

Clark offered a discounted labor rate as long as the customer accepted the estimate within 30 days, in order to avoid work being pushed to the busy spring.

“We sold out the canvas department labor for four months. We kept our entire staff employed full time with no reduction in hours for the winter,” Brown said. “When our competitors were cutting hours or laying off their employees we kept everyone working at full rate full time. No one on staff took a winter financial hit.”

Eddy the Bandit Eagle

V. Paul Reynolds As every angler who has ever wetted a line there knows, the West Branch of the Penobscot River - not far below Ripogenus Dam - is a very special tailwater.

The Big Eddy, below the Telos bridge, has been attracting devoted salmon anglers for decades.

The Big Eddy is aptly named.

The cold, fast-flowing water that is released daily from Ripogenus Lake forms a number of eddies at this wide spot in the river creating ideal fish foraging foam, seams and slicks. It is perfect holding water for hungry landlocked salmon, who feast all summer on the incredible, dazzling caddis fly hatches that routinely blanket the river like locusts.

My sons and I recently fished for three days at the Eddy. As always, the fish were there in abundance but predictably they were finicky and unwilling to hit just any fly you drifted their way.

We all caught fish. Some of us more than others. What worked for me was a # 18 dry fly that sported a drab yellow body and a fuzzy, grey CDC hackle that loved to float. My sons with younger eyes caught more fish because they were able to spend more time than I fishing. A lot of my fishing time was squandered trying to thread a wispy 6x tippet through the tiny eye of a fly that I could barely see, not to mention the hook eye itself.

The West Branch salmon are impressive, much more so in my view than the Grand Lake Salmon. Perhaps it's the colder water, but even the juvenile fish seem more fiesty and robust than their GLS counterparts.

There is a new "attraction" at the Big Eddy. A mature Bald Eagle that has taken up residence in a big tree overlooking the foamflecked water.

The eagle encounter makes for a good story around the evening campfire, but we got to thinking: isn't this dangerous? In both cases, the big bird came on fast almost close enough to touch.

What about those razor sharp talons and the heft of this bird?

Eagles have been known to take down and kill small deer. What if Eddy accidentally flies into an angler at 40 miles per hour?

If you ask me this is a lot like a dump bear that has learned through successful food-stealing forays not to be wary of humans.

Even if the Big Eddy wildlife viewers and photographers complain, the Chewonki folks might want to contact a state biologist or a bird rehabilitator.

It may be time to move Eddy the Bandit Eagle to a different location. n

Kennebec County Food Pantries “Share” Contributions On Tuesday, August 4, the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised $5.9 million since 1990 including a record-setting $552,257 in 2014, distributed over $20,000 of those funds to 33 hunger organizations throughout the state including two in Kennebec County (St. John’s Food Pantry in Winslow; and First Baptist Church Food Pantry in Mt. Vernon). Food pantries in every Maine county received a contribution, along with Good Shepherd Food Bank, which serves more than 90% of the hunger organizations in the state.

This year marked the 11th Annual ‘Share the Bread’ event, one of the most-widespread, oneday contributions to ending hunger in Maine.

‘Share the Bread’ aims to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in Maine, and the acute need for food for Maine’s 65,000 school children during summer vacation. The Maine Credit Unions’

Campaign for Ending Hunger started this initiative to recognize the efforts of food pantries across the state and to provide significant financial assistance to food pantries in all 16 Maine counties during a time of year that hunger organizations struggle with contributions and shortages.

According to Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental Affairs & Public Relations for the Maine Credit Union League, this event comes at a time when supplies at many food pantries are at critical levels.

“When people think of summer in Maine, they usually think about taking vacations and being outdoors; helping the local food pantry is often the furthest thing from their minds at this time of year. Sadly, summer is a hungry time for Mainers just like any other time of the year, except it doesn’t get the same attention as it does around the holidays. With anoth-

By Fred Cicetti Q. I’m 68 and my teeth are yellow. I’m thinking of getting them whitened. Is it worth it?

Whitening processes are effective. Based on clinical studies, 96 percent of patients with common stains experience some lightening effect.

But, be forewarned that whitening has to be repeated periodically if you want to maintain a sparkling smile.

Whiteness can start to fade in a month.

The least expensive option is a bleaching system you buy over the counter and use at home yourself. A home-bleaching system that your dentist supervises is the next step up. Getting you teeth done in a dentist’s office usually is the most expensive procedure.

Costs vary widely.

In addition to these options, you can get your teeth whitened with bonded resins and porcelain veneers.

Bonding a composite resin onto the teeth can change its color. This procedure usually can be done in one office visit. Porcelain veneers can be bonded onto stained teeth to whiten them.Veneers require at least two office visits.

There are also “whitening” toothpastes.

These toothpastes don’t change the shade of your teeth, but help prevent stains from sticking to your teeth.

Whitening toothpastes can be used to help preserve the results of a whitening procedure.

The most common reasons for yellow teeth are: • Aging. As we age, we accumulate surface stains. Also, the insides of our teeth yellow and can be seen through the outer enamel as it gradually becomes thinner over time.

• Tobacco that is smoked or chewed.

• Beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine and dark-colored soda.

• Foods such as blueberries, tomato sauce, curry and soy sauce.

You can also have stains within a tooth.

These can be caused by too much fluoride or certain antibiotics during tooth development.

These stains are harder to treat than surface stains.

Strawberry Pageant

The Strawberry Pageant Coronation was held July 26th at 4:30pm at the Pittston Fair.

Nineteen contestants participated in the three categories. Blossoms are 5to 7-year-olds, Princesses are 10- to 13-year-olds and Queens are 16 to 20. They will make appearances at many different agricultural fairs and events this year.

Each summer The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, provides thousands of New York City children with unforgettable summer experiences that unlock their limitless potential.

V-Town Paintball: Central Maine’s Best Paintball V-Town Paintball was opened in 2007, by Nick and Katie Jose, with only a couple of fields. Since then, we have added five more courses that are revamped each year! We welcome everyone from the first time enthusiast to the paintball pro.

V-Town currently has a couple of woods courses, tactical fields, a dunes field, speedball and a boats course all located at 18 Briers Way in Vassalboro. We take pride in keeping the courses as safe as possible, and most are completely surrounded in netting, so family and friends can watch as you play.

We have hosted endof-year college events, church/youth group outings, summer camp trips, bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthday parties and everything in between!

We are open by reservation, and we ask that you have a group of 10 or

more players, but we can accommodate up to 100 players at a time. This gives your group enough people to play for a couple of hours with our complete rental package. V-Town Paintball’s rental package includes a paintball gun, mask, paintballs, air, and the use of all courses for $30 per person with a group of 10 or more. We

encourage all participants to bring snacks, water and baggy clothing to wear while playing.

The Kennebec Riverwalk at Head of Falls Project The Rotary Club of Waterville, Maine is pleased to announce that it has awarded $150,000 to the Kennebec Riverwalk at Head of Falls initiative.

This innovative project, a collaboration between the City of Waterville and the Kennebec Messalonskee Trails organization, is designed to encourage greater public use of the waterfront area known as Head of Falls for recreation and other community purposes. It will also assist Main Street businesses by providing an additional highlight destination for local residents and visitors. This contribution will in part fund improvements including a meandering path, entry pavilion, walkway with ornamental railing, decorative lighting, seating, and landscaping.

The Waterville Rotary Club started planning for this “once in a century” grant opportunity two years ago. Many Club members generously do-

nated their expertise in defining the objectives for this Request for Proposal, as well as creating a process that was fair, inclusive, and would result in the best choice of grantee. The RFP was issued in 2014, and five finalist organizations presented their proposals to the Club within the past month.

The Club was seeking a “bricks and mortar” capital improvement project that would have a long lasting, area-wide benefit; encourage further development; reflect Rotary’s mission; and require community-wide collaboration on many levels.

This Riverwalk project proposal deeply resonated with the Club, with a vast majority of members voting it as their first choice for funding.

Helping to fund the Kennebec Riverwalk At Head Of Falls Project is a win-win for the city of Waterville as well as the Waterville Rotary Club.

Waterville will have an

exciting, safe, and familyfriendly destination within walking distance to the city’s downtown commercial area that also offers enormous potential for the community. This opportunity represents an ideal way for the Club to mark its first 100 years of service to the area. In addition to its $150,000 grant, the Club’s commitment to this project includes in-

kind service donations.

The Riverwalk project has been fully embraced by the City but not yet fully funded. The Club’s gift is substantial “seed money” to spur further governmental, local, and private support. In fact, upon hearing of the Club’s award, Kennebec Messalonskee Trails, a partner in this project, immediately contributed an additional

grant of $15,000 towards this initiative.

According to Mike Roy, Waterville’s City Manager, “We so appreciate the Club’s generous contribution towards this Riverwalk project. These upgrades are a much needed catalyst, and will absolutely help in the rebirth of this important but underutilized area.”

The officers and Board of the Swingin' Bears Square Dance Club announces the beginning of its 52nd year offering three free class lessons to introduce those of all ages to square dancing.

They will be held on Wednesdays, September 9, 16, and 23 from 6:30-7:45 PM. Ray Hilton of Saco, club caller, will be teaching the calls in the cafeteria of the Oxford Hills Middle School, 100 Pine St., South Paris. Club members will be there to mingle with the newcomers in a square.

From 7:45-9 PM a workshop for all who square dance will take place. The charge for the workshop is $4.

The first dance of the 2015-2016 season will be September 12, from 7 – 10 PM. The dance will be held

in the same place. The admission charge is $7 per person but non-dancers are invited to come at no charge to watch how much fun it is to be able to square dance. There will be round dancing, too. The caller and cuer with be the husband and wife team, Kip and Linda Moulton. Refreshments will be served Square Dancing is a great way to relax and have fun as well as to meet people and make new friends. It is a great recreation during the long cold winter months. Master Naturalists Class of 2015 Make Gift of Hickory Trees to theViles Arboretum Augusta - The Maine Master Naturalist Program’s graduating class of 2015 put their resources and generosity together and made a gift of two smooth barked hickory saplings (Carya cordiformis) to the Viles Arboretum. The program provides comprehensive training to individuals interested in learning about Maine’s natural history, with a focus on sharing that knowledge with others in a volunteer capacity.

Graduates lead nature walk leaders, give presentations, at schools, and provide other instruction for conservation minded organizations in their home communities.

“This gift of smooth barked hickory saplings makes an exceptional addition to our Nut Collection,” says Mark P. DesMeules,

Executive Director of the Viles Arboretum. “Visitors are fascinated with nut trees. Most people aren’t familiar with this species because it grows only in the southwest corner of York County. We are grateful for this gift and the many Capstone projects MMNP students have presented to the Arboretum.”

Over the past several years, three MMNP students in the Augusta area have developed Capstone Projects (an individual project that serves as the culmination of the course) for the Arboretum. These projects include a guide to natural history through the seasons, a spring birding checklist complete with a habitat map and detailed descriptions of some of our most colorful early migrants, and a winter twig

identification panel with hidden names that allows users to test their identification skills.

The Viles Arboretum, centrally located in Augusta on 224 acres of fields, forests, wetlands and botanical collections offers an ever-changing selection of programs for the general public and for schools. We focus on interactive, creative and hands-on teaching with a focus on natural history and unlocking everyone’s natural ability to understand the nature of our world through their own eyes and by using their own intellect.

In 1910 when anyone rode from Readfield Corner to Winthrop, about a mile out, they saw a two room early settler’s cabin that sat on a knoll in a lonely pasture. Just beyond that was the impressive farm of James O. Butman. Research reveals the log structure was built

by Samuel Mayhew about 1760. The cabin and land it sat on changed hands several times over the years until it became part of Butman’s holdings. By then all the cabin’s windows were broken and some openings were boarded up to prevent tramps from intruding on its occupant. Furnishings consisted of one chair, four boxes, a trunk and a small kitchen woodstove.

Its inhabitant might have gone unnoticed except for one thing; come summer a sign appeared outside the door that read “FORTUNES TOLD Poor People 5 Cents. Those with more money 10 cents.”

The fortune teller’s name was Mary Jane Richardson. “The rent here is very satisfactory...nit a month… cheapest rent in town…” she told a newspaper reporter in 1910. She also sang songs to “make a little extree” she said pointing to a sign on an interior wall that said - “5 cents for 3 songs. 10 cents for 3 songs and 3 hims.”

time that reporter discovered her. She refused to tell her age – perhaps she did not even know her age?

After all, she had been the sixth child of thirteen born between 1815 and 1837 so her parents surely had trouble keeping all those birthdays straight. Survival was their major concern.

Some of the children had to be farmed out or sent off to work in the factories in Massachusetts, including Mary Jane. She worked in the textile mills in Lawrence and also in Manchester, New Hampshire where she made enough money to dress well and participated in social activities such as dances and shows. “If I hadn’t been so foolish as to try to keep agoing and wear so many fancy good togs when I was in the mills” she said, “I might have more money now. It cost money to swim in society.”

She remained single – in fact she was reported to be a “confirmed spinster”.

Sometime after 1870 she returned to Maine and for several years worked as a housekeeper for prominent families in Augusta, Brunswick and Gardiner. Then she found herself temporarily out of a job and her life took a different direction. She met a woman who taught her how to tell fortunes with cards and the very first week she made a

she did not bring in enough income to live on. Mary Jane ended up living at the Readfield poor farm near Maranacook Lake, where she became well known to locals as a fortune teller.

In 1888 the poor farm was sold to a hotel developer and Mary Jane was told she would have to move to the new one in the far western reaches of town. Enter George E. Coleman.

Two hotels sprung up on Lake Maranacook about that same time – the Sir Charles Hotel (Tallwood) near the site of the original poor farm, and Maranacook Hotel directly across the lake from the Sir Charles. A train station was built nearby to accommodate the out-of-state vacationers who flooded in by railroad. Coleman was the station agent at Maranacook Station, and owned the aforementioned, uninhabited log cabin, which was fairly near Lake Maranacook. The entrepreneurial Coleman must have seen Richardson’s mystique as a potential attraction for summer visitors and he invited her to live there. She had never known anything but deprivation and hard work at the direction of hard task masters, so the idea of having her own home where she could also make a living, must have been a welcome

Word about the local fortune teller spread quickly among the summer people, with help from Coleman no doubt. They made their way to Richardson’s cabin where they confided to her their innermost secrets. Richardson told them things like who they would marry, how they would get rich, and whether they would die in the poor house. Pretending You Don’t Know Isn’t a Good Defense Submitted by Rebecca Webber When I first read the press on the EEOC v.

Abercrombie case, I thought, wow, Abercrombie sounds as if they didn’t know there was a need for a religious accommodation here and they’re being found liable for refusing to accommodate a need they didn’t know existed. Then I read the facts of the case...

Samantha Elauf wore a hijab to her interview.

Elauf did not mention the fact that she was Muslim, discuss the headscarf, or say she would need an accommodation from Abercrombie’s “Look Policy,” which prohibited employees from wearing “caps.”

The interviewer gave Elauf a rating that qualified her for hire, but was concerned that Elauf’s headscarf was a forbidden “cap” under the “Look Policy.”

Maybe the interviewer had no idea that there was religious significance to a hijab? Well, actually the interviewer sought guidance from an Abercrombie district manager and told him that she believed Elauf wore the headscarf because of her faith. The district manager decided that the headscarf violated Abercrombie’s “Look Policy” and directed that Elauf not be hired. In other words, even though the manager and interviewer weren’t technically sure Elauf wore a hijab for religious purposes and would therefore need an accommodation from the Look Policy, they thought she did. They decided to avoid having to accommodate by not hiring her.

As the Supreme Court put it, “Motive and knowledge are separate concepts.An employer who has actual knowledge of the need for an

accommodation does not violate Title VII [the federal law prohibiting religious discrimination and requiring accommodation] by refusing to hire an applicant if avoiding that accommodation is not his motive. Conversely, an employer who acts with the motive of avoiding accommodation may violate Title VII even if he has no more than an unsubstantiated suspicion that accommodation would be needed.”

In this case, Abercrombie suspected Elauf would need an accommodation from their Look Policy so chose not to hire her because they might have to allow her to wear her hijab to work. If they had known she would probably need an accommodation on religious grounds (knowledge) but chose not to hire her because she, say, she had been fired from her last 10 jobs

(motive), they would have been fine. If your motivation is to avoid a duty to accommodate religious beliefs or conduct, you could land in hot water.

For example, let’s say an applicant tells you that they hope they can at least once in awhile get Sunday mornings off to go to church. An employer needs to accommodate such a request if not overly burdensome by, say, allowing employees to switch shifts so the churchgoer can have a Sunday morning off. But you hear this statement in the interview and decide not to hire the person, who is otherwise a great candidate, because it sounds like it could be a hassle to deal with. You may well be in the same position as Abercrombie.

As the Supreme Court explained, “An employer may not make an applicant’s religious practice, confirmed

or otherwise, a factor in employment decisions.” Even a neutral policy like Abercrombie’s Look Policy can run into trouble because the law “does not demand mere neutrality with regard to religious practices—that they be treated no worse than other practices. Rather, it gives them favored treatment, affirmatively obligating employers not “to fail or refuse to hire or discharge any individual... because of such individual’s” “religious observance and practice.”

Religious discrimination includes not just treating persons differently because of their religion but also failure to reasonably accommodate an employee’s need for being excused from a workplace policy due to their religion.

So, allowing Elauf to wear her hijab despite the Look Policy would probably be a reason-

able accommodation.

If wearing a head scarf in a plant near machinery made it dangerous, however, and there was no way to have the head scarf kept safely under a hard hat, then it probably would be fine for the employer to say, no, you can’t wear that in that job. Just as with accommodations for disabilities, it is an individualized analysis.

Celebrate National Yoga Month in September Jodi Cornelio

Since National Yoga month is September and the fact that I just listened to five of my golf friends complain about sore backs, sore shoulders, tension headaches and lack of focus, I figured I would get a jump start on National Yoga Month.

Golf is great exercise especially if you walk the course. Walking keeps you warm and loose but a consistent yoga practice will keep you loose, focused and relieve many tensions even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t walk the course. Many think that yoga is primarily good for strength, flexibility and balance. Those are just

added benefits. The true beauty and benefits of a consistent yoga practice is mental balance, clarity and calmness free of tension.

Most of my golf friends, including me, pull into the golf course parking lot on two wheels filled with the stress and tension of the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s routine.

Tense muscles are primed for injury especially when accompanied by a full swing in an effort to kill the ball.

A consistent yoga program will teach you how to breathe properly. The simple method of proper breathing alone can release tension. All yoga programs have some level of breathing and meditation.

The meditation phase or sometimes referred to as the relaxation phase promotes mental clarity which definitely helps focus on the golf course.

There are many different types of Yoga and all of them promote these things as well as flexibility, balance and strength albeit

some are more difficult then others. Because there are so many misconceptions about yoga being a practice of chanting and trying to find Buddha, I have listed a few types of yoga with brief descriptions so that you can find a program that works for you.

Hatha Yoga - Basic

This is the physical practice of yoga, Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gentle and is typically the most generic form of yoga made up of different yoga styles combined to create a simple class that's good for beginners.

Ashtanga Yoga - Challenging This is a nonstop series of poses. Ashtanga yoga

also uses a special breathing technique that's said to help focus the mind and control the flow of breath through the body.

Bikram Yoga - Challenging You do a sequence of 26 yoga poses in a very hot room, above 100 degrees.

Not recommended for individuals with hyperten-

sion, heart disease or diabetes.

Iyengar Yoga - Gentle Detail-oriented and slow-paced, Iyengar yoga is good for beginners and uses many props for comfort.

Kripalu Yoga - Gentle Kripalu yoga begins with slow movements that barely cause a sweat, and progresses through three levels of deeper mindbody awareness.

Kundalini Yoga - meditation Kundalini yoga is more spiritual and philosophical in approach. Breathing techniques and chanting is to be expected.

Power Yoga - Challenging Power yoga is one of the most athletic forms of yoga and builds upperbody strength as well as flexibility and balance.

Golf Tips from Waterville Country Club As we pass the midpoint of the golf season (sad to say) it is always a good time to check and see where we are missing a chance to improve our scoring.

One easy way would be to chart a couple rounds as to where your shots go on each hole.

Did my drive find the fairway? Did I miss the green? Did I chip and one putt? Putts per hole?

When you have finished a couple of rounds you should be able to see ar-

eas that need work.

I always look to the short game as the easiest place to save shots and the easiest part of the g a m e to work on. Most golfers go to the range and want to crush drivers all day.

The reality is we use our putter more than our

driver during a round.

Take a minute on the practice green and check your alignment and work on t h o s e short p u t t s t h a t make the money.

Next work on long lag putts back and forth across the green.

The next part of the

game is chipping from around the green. Use a motion similar to your putting stroke and not cocking your wrist. A simple back and forth putting motion and change clubs to get the ball to go different distances.
