Lisbon High School Alumni Zoe Buteau Crowned Serves In Us Navy All American and Schoolgirl National Wrestling Champ Lisbon High School Class of 2014 alumni, Courtney R. Martel, enlisted in the United States Navy on June 23, 2014. Martel completed basic training at the Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois on August 22, 2014, and the Quarter Master Class “A” school in November 2014.

Courtney is currently stationed on the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Paul Hamilton, with her homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Martel is the daughter of Lisa and Robert Martel of Lisbon and Melony Martel of York. n

Lisbon Students Assist Rotary With Movie Event

May 15th through 17th Zoe Buteau attended the the All Girls National Wrestling Freestyle Championship in Irving Texas and beat a National Freestyle Wrestling Champion 14-13 for the title of All American and Schoolgirl National Champion. Zoe is 14 and is from Wales, she attends Oak Hill Middle School. She is following in her brother Danny’s footsteps, he is a 2 time Class B State Wrestling Champion.

On Saturday, April 18 many students were starting their school vacation week. A select number of Lisbon junior volunteers from Lisbon Community School, Philip W. Sugg Middle School and Lisbon High School started their week of no school by assisting the LewistonAuburn Rotary Club at a movie event held at the Auburn Flagship Cinema. The Rotary fellowship project, in conjunction with the Autism Society of Maine, was in support of children with autism. Families and their children were invited to attend the event free of charge as guests of Rotary group. All guests received complimentary popcorn and drinks. Lisbon Honors Community Partners & Volunteers

On Thursday, May 7, the Lisbon School Department honored their Community Partners and Volunteers for their assistance of 20,264 hours of community service during the 2014-2015 school year. Celebrating the milestone of achieving over 1,000 trained volunteers in the Lisbon School District volunteers, community partners, administrators and staff enjoyed a night filled with pizza, fun and celebration. Superintendent of Schools, Richard Green, welcomed close to 100 guests in attendance and commended their dedication and willingness to assist Lisbon students, teachers and staff. In an effort to keep the night on a positive note, despite the current budget issues within the town and the school department, the Appreciation Committee invited guests to participate in a movie trivia contest of the everpopular video, Shut Up and Dance. Guests were given a worksheet to identify the 88 different movie clips and a chance to win a prize at the end of the night. The excitement built throughout the evening with a number of door prizes and the anticipation of who would be receiving the top National Presidential Awards.

“Since 2004, the Lisbon School Department has been aligned with the prestigious National Presidential Volunteer Service Award Program,” commented Monica Millhime, Lisbon’s

Volunteer and Resource Coordinator. “The program recognizes adult volunteers achieving over 100 hours of service. Recipients receive a letter from the President of the United States, an award certificate and a National Volunteer Service pin. Volunteers and community partners contributing up to 100 hours and partnership opportunities in Lisbon received a Lisbon School Department Certificate of Appreciation,” said Millhime “Lisbon volunteers pride themselves on viewing their volunteer services as a central part of their lives.

Each and every time a volunteer assists with a project, whether it is in the classroom, tutoring, working on yearbook assignments, assisting as a reading buddy, chaperoning on a field trip, working from home on a special project, baking, or assisting in the office, our volunteers are making a difference in our schools for the benefit of our students, shares Millhime.

“We have generations within families who all volunteer.

Our program continues to grow in surrounding communities with a number of people joining our volunteer program. Over the last 11 years, the galvanized force of 1,194 Lisbon Volunteers donated 172,639 volunteer hours,” shares Millhime.

A standing ovation was given to Lisa Caron, for contributing 2,010 hours of service to the Lisbon Schools and greater com-

munity and to Millhime for her outstanding dedication to the volunteer program.

“Our volunteers donate their time not for the awards, but to make a difference in our community and set an example for others,” commented Millhime. A total of 42 volunteers earned The National Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. In addition to Caron, the Gold Presidential Awards was earned by Trisha Thebeau, Shauna Walls and Deb Weddle. Silver Presidential Awards for contributing 250 to 499 hours were earned

by Roland Grondin, Angela Shambarger, Heather Parker, Carol LeClair, Christina Gagne, Annette Wilson, and Emma Wilson. Suzanne Miller, Kathi Yergin, Sue Bornstein, Jeff Miller, Donna Rimiller, Nichole Sautter, Paula Caron, Jennifer Libby, Lorraine Bard, Doug Sautter, Carol Day, George Caron, Jonathan Carsley, Dean Willey, Jim Millhime, Amy Dudar, Amy Austin, Scott Wilson, Kelly Wade, Candace Barrett, Ron Hood, Pearl Scribner, Paul Barrett, Jonathan Pollack, Aspen Mikella, Amanda McDonough, Donna Thiele, and Gary Hauger all earned the Bronze award for contributing over 100 hours. “Lisbon School Department is extremely fortunate to have such a wonderful group of people willing to assist in our school district. The amount of time they contribute truly makes an impact in our community,” shares Superintendent Green.

Caron is a member of the Lisbon Adult Volunteer program and has served as treasurer of the Parent Action Group at Philip W. Sugg Middle School (PWS) and the Lisbon Community School (LCS). “Lisa began assisting as a Lisbon Volunteer when the two Lisbon elementary schools merged in 2004. She is an exceptional volunteer and a dear friend,” shares Millhime. Lisa was honored with top honors with The National Presidential Awards in 2005 and 2014 with 332 hours and 2,445 hours respectfully. “We are extremely fortunate in Lisbon with the number of hard working people who enjoy giving back to their community and schools,” shares Millhime.

Maine Conservative Corps Welcomes James Grecenko The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) recently welcomed James Grecenko from Litchfield, Maine for an AmeriCorps term of service in the Maine Conservation Corps’s Environmental Steward Program. James is the son of Lois Grecenko of Southbury Connecticut.

He is also a 1981 graduate of Pomperaug High School in Southbury Connecticut and a graduate of PPCC/ Culinary Command with a degree in Liberal Arts and Culinary Arts.

The MCC conducts conservation projects throughout the State of Maine, including extensive recreational trail construction and rehabilitation.

Adam Beaulieu of Sabattus and Monica Grass of Sabattus were recently named to the spring 2015 dean’s list at Keene State College.

To qualify for the dean's list, Keene State undergraduates must be enrolled in a degree program and must have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades. Students must achieve a 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale to earn dean's list honors.

Tara Metzger of Lisbon Falls was recently inducted into Union College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Metzger majors in Geology.

Juniors and seniors of academic distinction who are candidates for the B.A. or general B.S. degree are eligible for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Election is based on scholarship and character, with particular attention given to intellectual maturity and breadth.

On Saturday, May 9, Saint Joseph’s College held its Commencement, from its Standish campus on the shores of Sebago Lake. The College recognized the accomplishments of graduates in the on-campus programs as well as its online programs.

Hannah Langlois of Sabattus earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Heather Blanchard of Lisbon earned a Master of Science in Education.

Nikolas Moring has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at the University of Vermont. Moring, from Sabattus, is a Senior Microbiology major.

To be named to the dean’s list, students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.

Some 2,975 students were awarded a variety of degrees during the University of Vermont’s 214th commencement ceremonies on May 17.

Nikolas Moring, of Sabattus graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences Joshua Sirois, of Litchfield, graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in Physical Therapy from the Graduate College Benjamin Daggett, of Litchfield, graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences from the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences Adam Paine, of Bowdoin, graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in Medicine from the College of Medicine.

Heather Reed of Bowdoin was named to the Dean’s List at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine for the spring semester.

To be eligible for Dean’s List, a student must attain a GPA average of 3.5 or better, earn no less

than a B- in all registered courses, and must carry a course load of no less than 14 credits.

The following local students have been named to the President’s List for the Spring 2015 semester at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester.

To be eligible for this honor, a student must compile an academic grade point average of 3.7-4.0.

The University of Maine at Farmington celebrated the Class of 2015 with a festive annual Commencement Ceremony on May 16.

UMF President Kathryn A. Foster, faculty, administrators and dignitaries led the procession of 369 new graduates marching to traditional bagpipe music. UMF awarded a total of 392 bachelor’s and master’s degrees for 2015.

Russell Libby Agricultural Scholar Awards

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), the Maine Sunday Telegram's SOURCE, and Lee Auto Malls are pleased to announce the Russell Libby Agricultural Scholar Awards. The awards will honor the legacy of the late Russell Libby, who served as MOFGA's executive director from 1995 to 2012, and celebrate Maine's growing population of new farmers.

Three $1,500 scholarships will be awarded each year to students and farmers pursuing careers in organic or sustainable farming.

"The scholarships will give people the chance to get the knowledge that Russell felt was so essential to being a good steward of the land," said Mary Anne Libby, Russell's wife.

MOFGA, which took shape in 1971, emphasizes the importance of connecting people who want to

learn organic farming with experienced farmers willing to share their expertise.

Recognizing more than 20 years ago that Maine's farming population was aging and dwindling, Russell advocated for focusing significant MOFGA program resources on training the next generation of farmers.

Through Russell's vision, MOFGA has been instrumental in shifting the demographics of Maine's farming population. Now Maine is one of the leading states for creating successful new farmers in the country.

"Russell promoted the peer to peer learning model, encouraging successful farmers to mentor the next generation by providing learning opportunities in farm fields, orchards, pastures, and - every once in a while - the classroom," said Ted Quaday, MOFGA's executive director.

"It is a tremendous plea-

sure to work with the Maine Sunday Telegram and Lee Auto Malls to honor Russell's vision."

The awards will help individuals who want to attend educational workshops, conferences and academic programs. The awards will go to: •a current participant in MOFGA's Journeyperson Program; •a Maine High School Senior who intends to study sustainable agriculture at an accredited college in Maine; •and a Kennebec Valley Community College student enrolled in the sustainable agriculture program.

Students Prepare for a Secure Financial Future

NewsBites There is No Excuse for Elder Abuse Abuse happens when an abuser feels they are in a place of power, and they use that power in a way that harms the recipient. Children and pets are abused because they are weaker, or can’t speak for themselves – they are at the mercy of their abusers. The same applies to older people; abuse happens when the older adult is in a place of weakness or vulnerability or dependency.

Rarely, abuse happens because the abuser is overstressed.

Parents can remember a time when their children drove them to a place they recognized was dangerously near an abusive reaction. This can happen when caregivers of older adults reach that same frustration level.

This is understandable; however, when caregivers reach that threshold, they must seek help (Mobile Crisis Services, 1-888-568-1112).

There is no excuse: When family members take money from an older person that does not belong to them; When family members refuse to have a parent go to a nursing home, because they don’t want to lose that parent’s income; When people use abusive, derogatory terms for older adults; when they teach their kids to laugh at old people and make fun of their limitations; Just three examples of elder abuse. Recently, the Norm Nolette Chapter of Credit Unions, with support from the Jeannette G. Morin Chapter of Credit Unions, presented its 12th Annual Financial Fitness Money Management Experience at the Lewiston Recreation Department. Nearly 225 students from area high schools participated in this year’s event, which was the first Financial Fitness Fair established

by Maine’s credit unions back in 2004. Since then, nearly 150 fairs have taken place across Maine and more than 25,000

high school students have participated in one of the fairs.

Students from the following high schools attended: Edward Little High School, Lisbon High School, Monmouth Academy, Oak Hill, Saint Dominic Academy, Spruce Mountain High School. The day, which can be compared to an interactive ‘game of life,’ builds awareness for youth education and for credit unions’ dedication to financial literacy in their communities.

The Financial Fitness

Money Management Experience is a half-day event during which students will check in and receive a scenario packet of their life at age 22, which includes their occupations, income and credit history. From there, students will have to map out their financial future from financing their housing to purchasing food and clothing. The day can be compared to an interactive ‘game of life,’ and builds awareness for youth education and for credit unions’ dedication to financial literacy in their communities.

Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental and Public Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League, said the experience is an effort to help students understand the importance of making smart financial decisions at any age. “These students are preparing to enter the real world, be it through applying to college or joining the work force. In order to be successful, it is necessary to have strong understanding of money and how to spend and save. The interactive nature of this event gives them a hands-on way to gain these important skills,� he said.

Feedback from students was positive, if not eyeopening for many. One student from Edward Little High School said, “I was eager to move out when I graduate even though I am going to col-

lege in the area. Now, I may reconsider and save money while I go go school.� Another student from Lisbon High School added, “This fair really put things into perspective for me, and I’m going to be more careful about my finances because I learned that it can really affect me when I get older. I want a good credit score and, before today, I had no idea what a credit score even was.�

Phil Moreau, President/ CEO of Rainbow FCU, one of the credit unions participating in the Fair, said those types of comments “highlight the value of the fairs. For students to learn about the challenges that will await them in the real world is important because the more they know now, the better off they will be as adults.�

Lisbon Students Attend Financial Fitness Fair

Lisbon students experienced real-life scenarios of financial challenges on Wednesday, March 25 at the Maine Credit Union League Financial Fitness Fair held at the Lewiston Armory. Students from Philip W. Sugg Middle School, Lisbon High School and the Gartley Street Alternative Education Program had an opportunity to attend the event.

Lisbon JMG Attends Career Dev. Conference

Jobs For Maine’s Graduates (JMG) Lisbon Program traveled to the Augusta Civic

Center on Wednesday, April 29th for the 2015 Career Development Conference. The

Career Development Conference or CDC, is an annual JMG event where juniors and seniors across the state gather to work on career development skills, compete against their peers and attend workshops which focus on professionalism and their future aspirations.

Lisbon High School’s JMG classes spent months preparing for this conference. LHS chose the theme of Scooby Doo and the Mystery Machine centered around the idea that “Life is a mystery, find the clues to solve it.”

Seniors Taylor Martin, Victoria Swan, Destiny Pagan, and JD Martin and juniors Alyssa Finlay, Katherin George, and Olivia Leduc attended the conference. Students participated in numerous activities at CDC. One of

the activities included Leduc participating in the Public Speaking session where she explained her JMG experience and how it has helped her grow. Swan and Martin participated in the Marketplace Presentation where our JMG class had created a unique booth of the Mystery Machine and a life size Scooby Doo. The exhibit featured the JMG goals and the ongoing activities and experiences such as community service, job attainment and budgeting. Martin participated in the Interview skills participating in a mock interview with students from Thomas College. Pagan, Leduc, and Martin participated in the Pitch-It presentation. Students had to “pitch” the concept of JMG to a panel of judges and explain why JMG would be good for their

school. Martin and Leduc participated in the workshop “Burning a Hole in Your Pocket”. Students learned how to budget their money towards a fixed amount. Lastly, George and Pagan participated in the Group Challenge where they worked on a team-building activity.

At CDC, when students didn’t have a scheduled activity, there were other opportunities they could take advantage of. One was the Networking room where students could go and meet other students from different schools and discuss their interests and aspirations.

Another resource was the Career and College Expo where different booths represented by colleges and companies presented their organizations .

at CDC this year. LHS won the Facebook cover photo competition where they had to create a photo cover that showed what they do in JMG, winning a $100 check to go towards their JMG Career Association. LHS also won the Golden Tab Award for collecting the most aluminum pop tabs, 99 pounds, benefiting the Ronald McDonald Foundation. Lisbon JMG students are thankful to all the Lisbon volunteers who graciously collected and donated pop tabs for this great cause.

Lisbon Students Accept Fuse Challenge

The new gymnasium at Lisbon High School (LHS) is well under construction while the current gymnasium serves as the location for specialized events. On Tuesday, April 14 the current space was transformed into a working laboratory for future researchers and developers. Thanks to an invitation to participate in a green project known as, FUSE, freshmen students at Lisbon High School, and invited guests from Wiscasset High School, embarked on a day-long event. The hands-on learning with online challenges engaged students in the construction of solar cars and wind turbines. Students worked in teams accepting challenges inspired by realworld practices involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The event was sponsored

by Siemens in conjunction with Northwestern University. Educators and researchers in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern developed the FUSE program and is offered to students in grades kindergarten through 12. LHS Science teachers Rita Newell and Ann Wallace facilitate the event with students with assistance from representatives from Siemens and Northwestern University. “Students had a great time battling through the challenges and learning,” shared Wallace.

Crossroads of the Balkans

As I strolled along ancient ramparts that encircle a small medieval city, the view changed with each twist and turn. On one side was a maze of narrow streets lined by stone buildings. In the other direction were stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. Not far away, I traveled through a terrain of rugged mountains and deep canyons.

Criss-crossing four miniscule countries that once were part of Yugoslavia, I delved into intriguing chapters of history, gazed at breathtaking scenery and checked out local life in tiny towns and magnificent cities. When that nation was created following World War I, it included a number of different ethnic groups that set the stage for later conflict.

After those differences led to violent fighting, Yugoslavia splintered along

the borders of its former republics. Present-day Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Slovenia were four of the six small countries that emerged, and which I visited during a “Crossroads of the Balkans” tour with Overseas Adventure Travel.

The end of the fighting didn’t completely erase ethnic tensions, but today they’re expressed with words rather than war. Visitors hear good-natured but pointed jokes about people in neighboring states who once were fellow countrymen.

The tiny sizes of the countries - the four together have a total area less than twice as large as Maine makes traveling between them convenient. At the same time that similarities become evident, so do interesting differences.

One attraction is the appeal of cities. Dubrovnik in Croatia is one of the most

Zagreb, Croatia’s capital, has been a cultural center since the Middle Ages and boasts an inviting array of museums, many perched in the hilly, historical Upper Town. The pedestrianfriendly Lower Town has inviting squares and parks where locals gather to socialize at outdoor cafes.

Ljubljana (pronounced Loo-blee-AH-na) is a bustling urban center with broad promenades. Statues and a section of stone wall are reminders that this was the site of a Roman town beginning in 14 A.D. Overlooking the setting from a hilltop is Ljubljana Castle, which dates back to the

Defending Unemployment Claims Submitted by Rebecca Webber This message will provide a lead up to the Central Maine Human Resources Association meeting on June 16, 2015, from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston, which will feature Elizabeth Wyman, Chief Hearings Officer at the Bureau of Unemployment Compensation.

Unemployment claims present one area where employers often provide information that is not consistent with what may be needed in a different context, such as a discrimination claim.

For example, suppose you don’t mind if the employee gets unemployment and you just write “laid off ” or “not a good fit” for an employee who actually had a long list of bad behaviors? If that employee then files a claim with the Maine Human Rights Commission, claiming that they were let go because of discrimination, you can’t then, for the first time, argue that the employee was terrible at what they did and they were let go because of bad performance. The answers and the message need to be the same in any process at all involving the employee. Bottom line: make sure to keep the paperwork consistent across the boards.

A key point in these procedures: the focus will be on the conduct that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Let’s say you have an employee who routinely violated clearly stated rules about safety.You documented the events and gave warnings but had not yet fired them. But it’s the day that they came in 10 minutes late that you just lost it. That’s it; you’ve had enough. You fire them.

Others have come in late or early and you’ve ridden it out but this is just all you can take of this person and you end it.

The problem? The focus will be on whether the employee, in coming in 10 minutes late, violated a clearly stated rule that other employees were held to and that had been made clear to the employee...and that showed an intentional disregard for the interests of the employer. If the employee is just a knucklehead with an alarm clock that malfunctioned that day, that test could be hard to meet. Don’t make a decision to terminate without some time to think it out and decide without emotion and make sure the decision is based on a pattern of misconduct.

One of the first questions is whether to oppose a claim. Whether an employer hires a lawyer

or goes to the hearing itself, it will cost the company money or occupy the time of supervisors who would otherwise be working. If benefits are allowed, the only financial consequence to the former employer is that its experience rating will be changed so that its rate of contribution to the unemployment insurance fund will increase.

An employer's experience rating is determined every year by the Commission in accordance with a complex formula.

If an employer has been contributing relatively substantial amounts with few claims over a period of several years so that its reserves are high, the impact of an additional claim may be marginal.

If the reserve excess is a negative number, the impact of a claim could be significant. (The reserve excess number can be found on the notice of contribution form that is sent to employers on a yearly basis after the end of the State’s fiscal year, which means they usually arrive in July or August.)

For assistance in learning some of the factors that affect a rating, call the “tax” division of the Unemployment Bureau at 621-5120. Another option is to call your field advisor.

consider the benefits and dangers of the hearing available upon appealing an initial decision to award benefits. Because the employee/claimant will have to testify, an employer can gain valuable information ("discovery") about the position the employee is taking and may be able to get useful admissions out of the employee (the hearings are taped). At the same time, testimony on behalf of the employer will also be available to use against it in any subsequent trial so statements made at an unemployment hearing must be made with caution and advance planning. The evidence from unemployment hearings is routinely requested by the Maine Human Rights Commission. Because the second level of unemployment hearings are taped, that presents a risk for any employer as well. The first level – the phone call to each side separately – is not taped. After that, the risk is much higher. Make the decision strategically whether to appeal, attend, and/or hire an attorney.

But the benefits of networking are numerous, and it behooves men and women to make an effort to build and maintain strong professional networks.

• Recognize the benefits of networking. Networking not only benefits individuals but also the companies those individuals own or work for. When you foster a professional relationship, the other person in that relationship will be quick to think of you when they need a given service or are asked for a referral. That can benefit business owners' bottom lines, but even men and women who don't own a business can benefit, as their bosses will no doubt recognize the role they played in bringing in new business.

• Make networking a

priority. Once professionals recognize that networking is about more than just building a web of contacts who can help them find their next job, they can begin to prioritize networking so it can help them in their existing jobs. Make an effort to keep in touch with current and previous clients and any other contacts made over the years.

• Revisit your network from time to time. A network is only beneficial if it remains current. Keep track of the professionals in your network so you know when and where to reach them should you need to do so.

• Avoid networking only when you need something. You can likely name a few of your fellow professionals who only seem to contact you when they want something. You don't want to earn a similar reputation among your own contacts, so don't forget to make periodic contact with your colleagues even when you don't need anything.

Networking can easily be seen in a negative light. But professionals who network the right way will find that their efforts pay dividends for themselves, their companies and even their professional colleagues.

Auburn Community Concert Band Begins 34th Season of Free Concerts The Auburn Community Concert Band, under the direction of Milt Simon, will kick off its annual summer series of weekly outdoor evening concerts at Festival Plaza in downtown Auburn on Wednesday, June 17.

The 7:00 p.m. performance is the first of 10 programs scheduled for this Main Street location. The free concerts will continue weekly on Wednesday evenings through August 19th, weather permitting. If inclement weather is forecasted, the band will move its performance indoors to the Franco American Heritage Center, located on Cedar Street in Lewiston. The one exception pertains to the June 17th concert only, which will take place at the Community Little Theater Auditorium on Academy Street in Auburn, if an indoor location is needed that evening.

This year marks the 34th anniversary since band conductor Milt Simon first organized this musical group. The 42 volunteer musicians participating this summer range in age from 16 to 89, and together represent a total of 16 Maine communities.

Simon stated that the organization “gives many individuals a chance to utilize musical talents neglected since their high school days, and the entire community benefits.”

He added that the Auburn group “is one of the larger community bands in the state of Maine, and commonly attracts 300 to 400 people to its weekly concerts.”

The June 17th opening night performance will feature many new contemporary songs added to the band’s repertoire during this past winter’s rehearsal season, along with some of the band’s greatest hits from the past 33 seasons.

5 Ways To Enjoy Your BBQ Without Gaining Weight We all work so hard preparing for summertime fun and still fitting into our shorts and bathing suit. Why blow it by over-doing the summertime barbeques? You can still enjoy those outings in a healthy way with the following 5 tips for BBQ outings.

1. Try turkey burgers or sirloin instead of the ground high fat chuck. Skinless grilled chicken is great on the

grill and salmon or tuna steak are the best when grilling outside.

There are many seasonings that ad flavor without the calories like rubs and spices so you don't have to soak your BBQ meats in dressing, oils or gravies. Try Montreal seasoning, it's my favorite flavor enhancer.

2. Skip the buns. Instead, try a whole wheat pita bread

to hold your burger or better yet two big lettuce leafs make a great sandwich.

3. What's a cookout without potato salad and pasta salad? You can still enjoy these dishes with out all the fat by using lowfat Italian dressing instead of mayo. Or make your own dressing with white wine vinegar, mustard and a little olive oil. A great dressing for cold slaw is nonfat yo-

gurt and apple cider vinegar.

It's also healthy.

4. Cocktails add calories, skip the beer and pina coladas and make a refreshing cocktail with plenty of ice, vodka, club soda and little cranberry juice and garnish with fruit.

Another option is a wine spritzer with wine, club soda and fruit, again add plenty of ice.

5. All the extra nibble foods

that we all like to snack on can add up. Instead of chips and dip, try kale chips, leave out plenty of nuts and pickles for your crunchy snack foods, blue corn tortilla chips with salsa is lower in fats, gluten free and a healthier choice and watermelon for dessert.

The Central Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees has elected four new members to its ranks.

The follow individuals were recently named to CMMC’s governing board: Steven Wallace of Auburn, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston.

Prior to taking leadership of the YMCA, Wallace served as president and CEO of the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber

of Commerce. His experience includes leadership of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce. Prior to his chamber work, he was director of the Base Realignment And Closure Transition Center at Brunswick Naval Air Station.

He is a 21-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he served in multiple capacities, including combat soldier.

He was recognized as 2013 Chamber Executive

of the Year by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Veteran Small Business Champion for 2007 by the Small Business Association, and earned the “Above and Beyond Award” in 2008 from the Training Resource Center.

Students were welcomed by Rotary President, Christine Wilson, who thanked them for their attendance and their prepared questions for Senator King.

“I very much enjoyed my trip to listen to Senator King’s speech,” commented Jeffrey Willey. “It was very educational and delightful. Putting aside the lovely occasion, dining hall, and gourmet dining, King’s speech was certainly the most interesting of them all. He had insightful opin-

Benjamin A. Firth 1970-2015

On Sunday, April 12, 2015, with sadness and shock we lost an amazing, loving husband and friend, Benjamin Anthony Firth. Ben was born in Atlanta, Georgia Feb 20, 1970. He spent time in West Virginia as a young boy, enjoying the caves around his grandmother’s home. Ben grew up in North Carolina and was currently living in Sabattus, Maine with his wife Bethany Firth.

Ben was most content on the water. At the age of 12, Ben would drive his grandfather’s truck so that he could take the boat to set out crab pots.

He spent time crabbing on the Pungo River and working with Mrs. Elaine Mayo and her family. He enjoyed hunting almost as much as he enjoyed being on the water. When listening to 80’s music he would talk about his time being a DJ at Mattamuskeet High School.

He later graduated from Northside High School in Pinetown. Shortly after graduation he purchased his first commercial fish-

ing boat. He used this to fish in the Swan Quarter and Ocracoke, NC area.

Ben continued his life on the water and became the Captain of an oil vessel with Vane Brothers of Baltimore, MD. He was recently recognized for 20 years of employment and took great pride in caring for the DS-59. It was on a crew change day that Ben met Bethany in the Atlanta airport at the Sweetwater Brewery. Within a few months Ben was visiting Maine and became a resident of Maine shortly thereafter. Looking for moose, spending time in Rangeley, fishing, and working on their home filled their time together. Ben looked forward to karaoke nights with friends and would practice his country favorites around the house.

He showed his love for his friends and family as often as he could, always being available if needed.

He enjoyed working with wood and could create anything with his vision. On April 7, 2015 under a covered bridge

in Vermont, he married his best friend Bethany L. Douglass. He is survived by his wife, Bethany Firth of Sabattus, many friends and his family of Pinetown, North Carolina, Mitchell and Virgina Keech and their children Justin and Madison, with whom he cherished his time. He will be greatly missed by his Maine brother Bob Cote and wife Sally. The Douglass family will miss and hold on to their memories. He was predeceased by his father-in- law, Jerry Douglass.
