Lisbon High School Senior Provides International Community Service

During the summer months, most teenagers spend their time off from school working extra shifts at their places of employment, enjoying the beach, spending time with friends, and relaxing with their favorite pastime activity.

Over the summer, Jennifer Lynn Clifford, a member of the Lisbon High School

Class of 2014, and a young adult Lisbon volunteer, embarked on a journey of passion, commitment and dedication by volunteering her summer in Ghana, Africa. Jenna, participated in a youth trip through the Free the Children group.

Group members built a school along the coast in a small village of Asemkow, a few hours from the capitol Accra, (population 800 people). Jenna and other members of the group broke ground for a third school building. Volunteers made and carried cement for the two standing buildings scheduled to open in September. Students also worked on a bathroom and sanitation project, broadened their cultural horizons in the Ghanaian world, and joined young girls from the community on their water

walks. Students witnessed first-hand how much of an issue clean water is in the region.

Volunteers witnessed children as young as three carrying water three times a day. Jenna saved and worked toward bringing this trip to fruition with her own fundraising efforts over the past four years. “ I wanted to strengthen education globally and by doing so I hope to increase an appreciation for education in my home community,” shared Jenna. Jenna, is the daughter of Christie Clifford of Lisbon Falls and Dan Clifford of Sabattus.

Abbey Church Sainte Foy Until recently, I would have said that St. Francis of Assisi, Shirley MacLaine and I had little in common.

That was before I visited southern France where I hiked sections of one of the most popular and historically important pilgrimage routes in the world.

St. Francis, the Italian friar who is one of the most venerated religious figures of all time, made the pilgrimage in the 13th century. For Shirley MacLaine, the long walk was part of the spiritual exploration for which she is well known.

I followed short stretches of “The Way,� as it is popularly known, for a more mundane reason. I was on a “Walking Through history� tour that provided an introduction to the fascinating story of that well-known religious route, and much more.

The pre-trip information that I received from the New England Hiking Holidays tour company also promised visits to remote medieval villages and walled cities, fortresses and castles, and an immersion in the history

Castle Ruins and culture of a region unfamiliar to even many French people. That included introductions to the Visigoths, Germanic groups that established a kingdom in the area from the 5th to 8th centuries A.D.; Knights of Templar, a religious military order powerful during the 12th to 14 centuries, and the Cathars, a Christian movement that eventually was renounced by the Catholic Church.

Each group left its imprint.

For example, the Chateau D’Arques, a Templar castle, has homey touches like a large fireplace, window seats and a chute over the entrance door used to pour boiling oil on attackers.

Peyrepertuse, which consists of two Cathar castles linked by a staircase, was built atop a 2,600-foot-high cliff for added protection.

The castles overlook a network of ancient trails that eventually converge and end at the shrine of Santiago de Compestela at the westernmost tip of Spain. There, according to legend, the remains of the apostle St. James were buried, after being transported by boat from

me know that I will always push fruit and veggie sticks as one of the best snack energy foods. But even I am sick of pulling smashed bananas and rotted apples out of my briefcase and knapsack.

The concern is that many store bought power bars are no more than decorated candy bars loaded with sugars, fats and preservatives and some protein added to it. They are also expensive.

If you have to buy a power bar, always read the label to get the best choice. When you do find some down time make your own trail mix with the healthy recipe below. .

Since at least the 9th century, many thousands of people have followed all or part of the pilgrim routes that stretch across western Europe. Historically, most people made the pilgrimage for religious reasons. Others had a more worldly agenda.

Some people in the Middle Ages made the walk after being promised that their debts would be forgiven. Then there were those who saw the pious pilgrims trudging along as easy targets to rob.

That diversity continues to this day. Some trekkers simply want a long hike through magnificent scenery, while others say they make the journey to give up smoking or lose weight.

While much of the network of trails is fairly flat on good paths, there are places that are rocky, steep and more challenging. After huffing and puffing up a few of those stretches, I figured that weight loss is a fact for virtually everyone who makes the trip.

Along the way, the route passes charming medieval villages, each with its own

stories to tell. The houses often are clustered around a small castle that once was occupied by a nobleman who served as both the local government and protector of the settlement. The little homes of the townspeople line narrow, twisting, cobblestone streets. Many of them are festooned by flowers, which add an explosion of color to the scene.

A major stopping point for pilgrims over the centuries, and still today, is the charming medieval town of Conques, nestled in a densely wooded valley near the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. Sections of the original walls, punctuated by fortified gateways, are still visible. The muted colors of traditional timber-framed houses are accentuated by the red sandstone and bronze limestone of other structures, set off by blue slate roofs.

The center of attention in town is the imposing Abbey Church of Sainte Foy (Faith). It was built during the 11th and 12th centuries to commemorate a young girl who is said to have been martyred at the time of the

Combine all nuts and dry fruit oats and rice cereal in a large bowl.

In a pot combine peanut butter, molasses and water and bring to a mild boil.

Turn off heat and add vanilla and stir until blended.

Pour the peanut butter mixture over the dry ingredients and stir until coated.

Once it cools you are ready to bag it and carry it with you for the energy pick up you need in a healthy low-fat, high protein, no preservative way.

Roman Empire. Because she refused to renounce Christianity, she was tortured to death, and now is listed in church catalogues of martyrs and saints.

An image of the girl, bowing before the hand of God, holds a central place on a tympanum, a semi-circular carved arch over the main entrance into the church which depicts the Last Judgment. The carved stone decoration depicts 124 figures.

They include Christ welcoming the Virgin Mary into heaven, and Satan presiding over people being punished in hell for their earthly sins.

The other treasure of Conques is, in fact, a treasure. It consists of portable alters, chests, cameos and other religious artifacts, many gold plated and covered with precious stones.

The collection is considered to be one of the five most important displays of works by medieval goldsmiths in the world.

Nothin’ But Small Talk…Hit the Trails This Fall

Autumn has arrived with its cooler days and nights, no bugs, beautiful leaves, and breathtaking views.

Every chance I can I hit the trails on foot or on horseback to enjoy the best and most enjoyable season in Maine, and you can bet the dog is always in tow!

Every person has their favorite trail or spot to hike to. I am lucky to have trails right out my back and front door. I have Bear Mountain in North Turner just five minutes away, Turner Riverlands Park 15 minutes away and Streaked Mountain in Buckfield only 25 minutes away.

Living in Maine, I am sure most people are lucky enough, like me, to have

a hiking destination (or several) within a short distance.

Last October, five friends and I, with our six horses, decided to venture out and hit the road for three days and two nights in Acadia National Park. Most of us had never been and we were all excited.

We had a great day to make the three-hour drive to Wildwood Stables in the heart of Acadia. It was the very last weekend the stable and carriage rides were open and we had the entire stabling facility to ourselves.

The horses settled in quickly and we were able to get in a two-hour ride late in the afternoon, taking in

the beautiful carriage roads paved with perfect stone walls, the stone bridges, and the amazing views.

Our weekend in Acadia was spent exploring new and different trails, enjoying the company of great friends and horses, and sharing meals and potluck dinners in the barn. It was a great time and an amazing experience every hiker and horseback rider must experience.

Even with the rain we had on Saturday we had a great time on the amazing trails created by the Rockefellers.

Between 1913 and 1940, John D. Rockefeller Jr., financed and directed the construction of the 57 miles

of carriage roads for the use of hikers, bikers, horse riders, and horse-drawn carriages on Mount Desert Island. This diverse network of woodland “brokenstone” roads does not allow motor vehicles.

There are 45 miles of roads within Acadia National Park and some of these allow for crosscountry skiing and limited snowmobiling during the winter months.

Granite was quarried from Mount Desert Island itself by the road crews for the needed road material and bridge facing all along the trails, and landscapers tastefully utilized native vegetation such as ferns and wild blueberries to border

each trail.

And, as always, we enjoyed our girls’ weekend trail riding on the great trails in Andover, Maine, while staying at Memory Lane Vacations. If you are looking to hike, four wheel, or horseback ride in western Maine, Andover is where you should head.

There are several park and rides where you can unload your atv or horse and hop right on the trails.

Between Andover and Roxbury, you have several stores to stop at to fuel up your vehicle or yourself. My favorite being the Little Red Hen Diner right in Andover on Main Street.

When not hitting the trails for hours on end, our

horses relaxed in their comfy stalls and we enjoyed the studio apartment and hot tub. Many of us go back for day trips as well throughout the summer and fall.

Fall is here and soon we will have limited time on the trails once hunting season hits full swing. Get out there with your four-legged creatures and enjoy!

Don’t have a horse? Hiking is a great form of exercise and if you have a dog, they will enjoy it just as much as you! n

Genealogical Society to Meet Oct. 13

The October meeting of the Pejepscot Genealogical Society (PGS) will be held in the Morrell Meeting Room of the Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick, Maine on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 2 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Eben Miller, History Honors Program Coordinator at Southern Maine Community College who will present “Nelson Dingley, Jr’s Daily Evening Journal: A View of the Northern Civil War Homefront, 1861-1863” Launched during the outbreak of the Civil War, in April 1861, the Lewiston Daily Evening Journal of-

fers a unique view of the Northern home front. Published by a young Republican - future Maine governor, Nelson Dingley, Jr. - the Journal demonstrates how Mainers responded to the crisis, from the swift mobilization of regimental units to widespread displays of patriotism.

This lecture will draw from the Journal to explore the extent to which the experiences in Lewiston, and in Maine more broadly, were emblematic of Northern home front during the first years of the Civil War, paying special attention to soldiers’ news from the war front, expressions of

Unionism, economic and cultural developments, and the evolution of emancipation as a wartime policy.

The public is invited to join us as we discuss the role of newspapers, and in particular, the Journal’s role in fostering patriotism during the early years of the Civil War and how it helped connect the soldiers with the home front.

Annual Health Fair and Flu Clinic

The Cathance Fitness Center is welcoming the fall by hosting the third annual Health Fair and Flu Clinic, on Thursday, October 10th, at our location on Rte. 125 in Bowdoin (in the former elementary school building), from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Both flu clinic and health fair are open to all members of the local and neighboring communities and there is no cost for admission. In addition to the key goal of bringing flu vaccine into the community well ahead of flu season, the health fair will provide opportunities for community members to

learn more about what preventive and restorative health resources are available locally.

The fair is expected to have a number of healthrelated service providers who will explain and, in some cases, demonstrate their non-invasive wellness and healing practices.

The Health Fair will also offer an organic farm stand onsite that will have locally grown produce and farm products to sell.

The hosts of the health fair and wellness event will be blending up delicious and healthy fruit smoothies as free refresh-

ments throughout the day!

There will also be the more traditional health and wellness opportunities that include free blood pressure screening, health risk assessment, and body mass analysis.

The fitness center will be open for attendees to tour and try out with the benefit of having a fitness professional on hand to assist as needed to operate equipment and to answer fitness questions.

Marya Hornbacher to Speak at Mid Coast Hospital

In observance of Mental Illness Awareness Week, Mid Coast Hospital will host Marya Hornbacher at a special community event focused on reducing the stigma of mental illness.

“Changing Minds: Ending the Stigma of Mental Illness”will feature a talk and book signing by Hornbacher on Tuesday, October 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Frontier Café, Cinema, and Gallery in Brunswick.

Mini-Medical School Series Begins October 8 “Understanding the Cardiovascular System” is the theme of a six-part minimedical school presentation set to begin on October 8.

The Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute is sponsoring the series as part of its yearlong tenth anniversary celebration. The programs will be presented on successive Tuesdays beginning October 8 and concluding on November 12.

2013 Click for Babies

Mid Coast Hospital, in association with Families CAN! a program of Midcoast Maine Community Action, is launching its 2013 Click for Babies, Period of Purple Crying Caps Campaign.

This campaign is part of a national initiative to educate parents and caregivers about the Period of Purple Crying, a normal, but frustrating period of increased crying all infants experience in the first few weeks and months after birth.

It is striving to inform and remind parents of the dangers of reacting in frustration by shaking or abusing an infant.

In this grassroots campaign, all knitters and crocheters throughout the midcoast region are invited to make purple colored baby caps, which will be delivered to families of newborns at Mid Coast Hospital’s Maternity Unit. Caps can be made using any pattern and in any shade of soft baby friendly purple yarn.

“All parents of babies born at Mid Coast Hospital receive information on the Period of Purple Cry-

ing. These purple caps are meant to serve as a reminder to the parents and caregivers to review the information on normal infant crying and to heed the dangers of shaking a newborn,” noted Eileen Delaney, Director of Maternity at Mid Coast Hospital.

“Caring for a crying infant can be really frustrating. We want to be sure parents know that it is okay to put an infant down in a safe place and walk away when frustrated.”

Caps are being collected at the Mid Coast Hospital Information Desk, at the MCH Walk-In Clinic at Brunswick Station, and at the Midcoast Maine Community Action offices at 34 Wing Farm Parkway in Bath.

Throughout November and December, the caps will be distributed to parents of newborns at Mid Coast Hospital.

Caps can be made using any shade of soft baby friendly purple yarn. Knitters should include their name and address with the donation of the caps they have made. The address is used solely by the hospital

to thank the knitter for their donation. When the caps are distributed to new parents, they include a tag noting the knitter’s name.

By Fred Cicetti Our last column was about dry eyes. Today, we go over some treatments for the condition.

Tears are necessary for overall eye health and clear vision. Dry eyes are common in people older than 50. A lack of tears is more common among women, especially after menopause.

The treatment for dry eyes depends upon the cause.

First, physicians have to determine if a disease is the underlying cause.

Then the disease is treated.

If a medicine you’re taking for another condition is causing dry eye, your doctor may recommend switching to a different drug.

If contact lenses are giving you dry eye, your eye care practitioner may recommend another type

of lens, or reducing the number of hours you wear your lenses.

There are procedures by eyecare professionals to plug the drainage holes at the inner corners of the eyelids where tears drain from the eye into the nose. Lacrimal plugs, also called punctal plugs, can be inserted temporarily or permanently. In some cases, a simple surgery, called punctal cautery, is recommended to permanently close the drainage holes.

If other methods do not give you adequate dry eye relief, your ophthalmologist may suggest that you use a prescription medication. One such medication, cyclosporine, works by stimulating tear production.

Steroid eyedrops may also be used, but are generally not recommended for long-term treatment.

Other treatment options may include ointments, gels and inserts.

Omega fatty acids may help relieve dry eyes symptoms. Omega fatty acids are available in foods and in supplements.

Always talk to your doctor before taking any food supplements.

A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Cornea showed that HydroEye, a nutritional supplement containing omega fatty acids, improved dry-eye symptoms. The study, which evaluated 38 postmenopausal women with tear dysfunction in both eyes, was conducted by two world-renowned dryeye researchers: Stephen Pflugfelder, MD and John Sheppard, MD. “Prior to this study,” said Dr. Pflugfelder, “clinical evidence showing that nutritional supplements were beneficial in treating dry eye was scarce.

However, within three months, the group treated with HydroEye showed statistically significant improvements in irritation symptoms of dry eye, and no progression of ocular surface inflammation or corneal irregularity. The placebo group’s dry eye symptoms actually worsened over the six-month testing period.”

There was a fella back home named Harold Hooper who had a nice place on a straight-away right there on Route 1 about a mile out of town. When he retired from the post office he decided to come up with some clever item he could make and sell to the thousands of tourists going by his house all summer.

After doing a little market research Harold settled on the birdhouse as the easiest and most popular item to make and sell for the most profit. When he told folks around town about his birdhouse idea everyone agreed it was a good one. They also agreed that Harold had a perfect spot there on Route 1 and he should do quite well.

The only fly in the ointment was that when Harold finally started making his birdhouses it was obvious that he was a terrible carpenter, completely unskilled with no idea how to skillfully join two pieces of wood together. Still, he threw together about two dozen rickety birdhouses, slapped a thick coat of paint on them and hung them from the branches of the large maple tree in his front yard. Then he set

a large, gaudy sign on his lawn to announce to the traveling public that he was now in the birdhouse business and had all kinds to sell for $20 each.

As expected, tourists began stopping almost immediately to check out Harold’s wares. After examining a few of the flimsy structures those same tourists would get back in their cars and drive away.

At first Harold thought that he might have priced his birdhouses too high. So he reduced the price from $20 to $18 and made signs to reflect the savings.

Tourists continued to stop, but after looking refused to buy Harold’s birdhouses so he continued reducing the price. From $18 they went to $16, then $14 and $12. By mid-August Harold decided to price them at $5 each just to get rid of them. At that price he did sell a few, but by the end of the season most of the birdhouses remained hanging in the maple tree — unsold.

Although he was unskilled in carpentry Harold was not a stupid man, he learned a lot from his fruitless birdhouse adventure.

He learned that despite his perfect location on Route 1 and despite the obvious popularity of birdhouses he lacked the skill needed to make birdhouses people wanted to buy. So he stopped making them.

I was reminded of Harold’s experience the other day when I read in the pa-

per about someone known as a “performance artist” who received a generous federal grant because no one was willing to pay to see him do his “performance art.”

Many people wish the folks in the art world would learn the simple lessons that Harold learned years ago there on Route 1. But they haven’t. In the art world, if the average person refuses to buy a piece of work because the artist lacks artistic skill and aesthetic vision, then the arts community thinks the artist should get grant money from the government treasury so he’ll be encouraged to keep making things people refuse to buy.

I recently came up with what might be a workable solution to the money-forart problem. I think the arts people in Washington should follow the example set by the folks in agriculture over 50 years ago. When people don’t buy enough of the food that farmers produced, the Department of Agriculture folks began paying farmers NOT to grow food.

Why can’t we do that with those unskilled artists? If someone insists on making all kinds of worthless objects that no one buys, why not have the National Endowment for the Arts agree to pay these “artists” not to make any more “art?”

Think about it while I email my congressman. n

Back Pain Treatment Discussed

McLaughlin is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio. He completed residency training at The Ohio State University Hospitals, also in Columbus, Ohio.

He is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and holds subspecialty certification in pain medicine. He is also certified by the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

He also practices with Central Maine Orthopaedics and Maine Spinecare.

The first presentation will be held on Thursday, October 3, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Chairmen’s Rooms, located on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building on the Central Maine Medical Center campus in Lewiston.

“There is no cookie-cutter approach to successfully managing back pain,” says Regan, one of the region’s experts on back problems.

“Sometimes surgery is the best option for

treating back pain, but sometimes conservative treatment with physical therapy is the best course of action.

Appropriate evaluation of each patient is essential to determining the best care plan.”

Regan is a fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery, general orthopaedics and total joint surgery. He practices with Central Maine Orthopaedics and Maine Spinecare, both in Auburn.

Mollyockett Chorus Hosts Community Sing-a-long

The Mollyockett Chorus is hosting a Community Sing-a-long for all women who love to sing, Tuesday, October 8 from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the Skeetfield Road in Oxford. The event is open to women of any age and will include a brief introduction to barbershop harmony performed by the chorus, a sing-a-long featuring barbershop har-

mony arrangements of familiar tunes that most will know, and an introduction to some of the Christmas music that will be part of the chorus’ seasonal repertoire. Refreshments will be served.

The Mollyockett Chorus is a Region 1 Chapter of the Sweet Adelines International. They have been singing barbershop harmony since 1996.

Barbershop harmony is a musical style sung with-

out accompaniment by bass, baritone, lead, and tenor voices. The chorus rehearses every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the Skeetfield Road in Oxford. Lisbon High School Counselors Share Aspiration Connections

The new Lisbon High School Counselors, Ms. Shari Jordan and Ms. Amy Sewick, visited students enrolled in the morning and afternoon programs at Lisbon’s Gartley Street School, the Alternative Education Program at Gartley Street.

Counselors shared contact information for post-secondary aspirations to the group of Juniors and Seniors.

Students were given information about applying to college, researching scholarships,

apprenticeship opportunities, and the benefits to having a plan in place before finishing high school.

Counselors will be meeting with students on a monthly basis to support and encourage students to set up appointments to meet with the counselors individually to discuss their future plans.

V. Paul Reynolds Starting this week, Maine's more than 12,000 licensed bow hunters will either take to the deer woods, or daydream about it. Maine's archery deer season kicks off a half hour before sunrise October 3rd and concludes a half hour after sunset November 1st.

Whether your bow is a compound, a recurve, or simply a traditional longbow, it is a good idea to give it a little attention and TLC beforehand.

When that special moment comes, when the 10-point buck steps within bow range of your treestand, managing your composure will be challenge enough without having to deal with an unnocked arrow, a bad string or a loose sight pin.

You need to be confident and ready.

A lot of practice is imperative. Like hitting a golf

ball, you need that muscle memory to kick in automatically when you are not as cool-headed as you want to be. An unpracticed bow hunter who releases a razor-tipped broadhead at a deer is not an ethical hunter. You owe it to yourself and your quarry to make thorough preparation.

Thorough preparation, along with repetitive target practice, includes a close inspection of your bow and its moving parts.

During a recent guest appearance on my Sunday night radio program, Maine Outdoors, Bob Wengrzynek and Ann Langley from the Old Town Archery and Pro Center, urged bow owners not to ignore proper maintenance of their bows.

Bob pointed out that some bow owners are unaware that dry firing a bow should never be done, especially with a compound bow.

"When you draw back the bow string," says Bob, "the energy has to have a place to go. If the arrow is not there to absorb the energy, a fast letoff of the bow string can damage the cams or the bow itself."

expensive and safe device that does allow dry shooting a bow without harmful effects.

Of course, the bow string itself is critical. It should be visually inspected for frayed strands. The average bow shooters should replace a bow string every few years.

Most bow hunters don't bother to wipe their bow strings with a moist cloth after each practice session.

They should.

"If you look at pollen under a microscope," Bob says, "you will see sharp edges. Believe it or not accumulated pollen will damage a bow string if it is allowed to gather and work its way into the string fibers."

Archers and bow hunters shopping for new arrows need to purchase with care and forethought. All arrows are different: length, diameter and spline matter a lot.

The arrow needs to be the proper match for your bow.

For example, I hunt with a 55-pound compound bow and my draw length requires a 28" arrow. In most stores that sell serious bow equipment, there are arrow graphs and store personnel, either of which can help you choose the arrow that will give you the best

performance with your particular bow.

If bow hunting is new to you, make sure that your practice shots at a target normally with field points - include some trial shots with the actual hunting broadheads that you intend to use.

If your field point is 100 grains then your broadheads need to be 100 grains as well. If your broadhead makes your arrow fly differently than a field point, you need to know this and adjust accordingly.

Yes, this is basic stuff, but neccessary for things to come together successfully at the moment of truth.

Finally, if you are a seasoned bow hunter it is good to stay abreast of the new bow technology. Try not to be overwhelmed by it all, and be skeptical about new bow hunting accoutrements. Some of it is, indeed, breakthrough stuff; some of it is just the same old same old with a new name and new packaging.

Hunt safe. Use a safety harness. Be wary handling those broadheads. And if your shot opportunity at a deer is marginal, chip to the ethical choice. Don't take the shot. There will be other chances.

Welcome Maine Seniors Day!

By Jane Margesson, AARP Maine Communications Director When local and state entities come together toward a common, positive goal, it’s exiting! Thanks to many friends and collaborators across Maine, our older residents will now be formally recognized every year on a special day: Maine Seniors Day, (second Saturday of September).

This is wonderful news for several reasons. First of all, an actual designated day such as this offers the chance to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments, experiences and contributions of older Maine residents. So many older Mainers are volunteers, innovators and community leaders! What a perfect occasion to honor their talents and hard work.

Maine Seniors Day also

provides us with an opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the issues that Maine seniors face. Many older residents in Maine encounter unique challenges in a state that is large geographically and has a far-flung population.

AARP Maine is committed to connecting people with shared interests and empowering Maine seniors to pursue their goals and dreams. Working together with like-minded organizations and community leaders, we can all make a difference.

For example, in celebration of Maine Seniors Day, AARP Maine has joined the Maine Fraud Prevention Alliance which is dedicated to raising awareness and preventing fraud in Maine with their DASH Fraud program. The Alliance’s website, www.dashfraud.

Lewiston Firefighters Give Back to Community Through Operation Warm

Once again, the Lewiston Firefighters Association (LFA) will make its mark in helping others. Fitting to its core mission of giving back to the community, Lewiston firefighters are joining International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) affiliates across the country to participate in OPERATION WARM. OPERATION WARM provides brand-new, made-inthe-USA winter coats to impoverished children. As such, the LFA will provide 100 needy Lewiston children with a new winter coat this fall. According to Rick Cailler, LFA President, “For many of these children, this will be the first new coat they have ever had. Families struggling to meet the most basic needs must often put food and shelter before proper winter clothing leaving children, literally, in the cold.� Cailler reports that more than 17.5 million children live in poverty in the U.S. and Canada—1 out of 5 children. Lack of a coat can contribute to a perpetual cycle adversely

affecting children’s health, nutrition, physical fitness, and academic performance.

Without a warm coat, children are more susceptible to illnesses and more prone to miss school. Frequent absences negatively affect academic success. By missing school, they are also deprived of essential school-provided nutrition, and research conducted by the USDA Food and Nutritional Service reveals that there is a direct correlation between nutrition and academic performance.

Last but certainly not least, a winter coat enables children to participate in outdoor play during recess, resulting in much needed physical activity, an essential component of a healthy mind and body.

At the 2012 Philadelphia IAFF convention, delegates voted in overwhelming support of Resolution 20 – Firefighters Coats for Kids Foundation. The community outreach program was designed and branded especially for IAFF Firefighters

The Long Road from Gettysburg to Appomattox

Civil War historian and living-history performer Charles W. Plummer will be the featured speaker at the October 9th meeting of the Lisbon Historical Society. At his most recent presentation for the group, Plummer detailed the contributions of units from Maine at the battle of Gettysburg. By popular request, he will continue with the final chapters of that history.

Appearing as Union Civil War general Joshua L. Chamberlain in the twilight years of his life, Plummer will present an overview of the battles that Lisbonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volunteers participated in after the battle of Gettysburg through to the warâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end with the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Leeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s army on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox, Virginia.

He will conclude his presentation with a reading of the speech that

Chamberlain gave at the dedication of the Maine monuments at Gettysburg on October 3, 1889, accompanied by photos of those monuments in the form of overhead transparencies.

Companies from across the state entered the twopart process to determine the Best Places to Work in Maine. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s workplace policies, practices, and demographics.

This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation.

The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies

Mainegeneral’s New Physical Rehabilitation Unit: Where Technology Meets Nature

By Diane Peterson, Senior Editor, MaineGeneral Health When MaineGeneral’s new 20-bed Physical Rehabilitation Unit opens at the Alfond Center for Health Nov. 9, patients will have access to all the latest technology and comfort measures to help them regain independence after an amputation, stroke, hip fracture, or brain or spinal cord injury.

Outside, they will also have access to a beautiful rehabilitation garden.

To Mary Melville, administrative director of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, the outdoor space is one of the items near the top of the “wish list” she has compiled during the more than 35 years she’s been at MaineGeneral.

“When I think of all the things we wished we could do to improve patients’ and families’ experiences and help get them back home comfortably and safely, it’s really exciting to know they will become a reality in the new hospital,” said Melville, a physical therapist by training.

For her, the garden is key. “Our patients are often with us longer than an

average hospitalization so being able to get outside is very important. When I was a clinician I remember thinking, ‘If we could just get these patients outside to breathe fresh air, smell the cut grass, feel the heat of the sunshine and the breeze on their faces, they would do so much better.’”

Overlooking an outdoor fountain, the rehabilitation gaden will have different surfaces including tar, gravel and grass for patients to practice walking on with or without a walker, a wheelchair or other device. It also will have both shaded and sunny areas and a place to practice maneuvering steps. From early spring into fall, patients will plant and maintain a garden as part of their therapy. The plants will be in planters at different levels to be wheelchair accessible. Often when patients are gardening they often don’t even realize they’re doing therapy, Melville said.

One of only five specialty inpatient rehabilitation facilities in Maine, MaineGeneral’s Physical Rehabilitation Unit provides intensive therapy, including physical, occupational and speech seven days a week

with daily physician oversight in a hospital setting.

The goal is to return eac patient to as much independence as possible by working on activities that were once part of their daily lives including getting dressed, washing, eating and moving independently.

Other items topping Melville’s wish list include all private rooms for patients with space for family members to stay overnight on the pull-out couches included in every room.

Gayle Cunningham, Physical Rehab Unit administrator agrees. “Family members play a key role in patient’s therapy. It’s important to incorporate families into the rehabilitation process. With space for them to be there and in private patient rooms it will make it much easier to teach family members how to help care for their loved ones,” she explained.

Cunningham noted that each of the 20 rooms on the unit have lifts that help patients and staff get around in the room. The track runs into the bathrooms so all patients, even those at high risk for falling, can practice getting to the toilet and showering safely.

Stained Glass Window Donated to Dempsey Center

by Nel Bernard to celebrate the Healing Garden at the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing.

“Patients can go forward, backward and turn around.

We’ll be able to set up different surfaces and steps for patients to go over. Our therapists will be able to challenge patients more, which promotes quicker recovery.”

A therapy dining area and fully functioning kitchen and laundry will help patients relearn homemaking skills for when they return home.

The project was conceived as a way to bring survivors and caregivers together and create a positive, permanent art installation while learning new skills and exercising commitment, cooperation and community support. n

Journal offers a unique view of the Northern home front. Published by a young Republican - future Maine governor, Nelson Dingley, Jr. - the Journal demonstrates how Mainers responded to the crisis, from the swift mobilization of regimental units to widespread displays of patriotism.

This lecture will draw from the Journal to explore the extent to which the experiences in Lewiston, and in Maine more broadly, were emblematic of Northern home front during the first years of the Civil War, paying special attention to soldiers’ news

from the war front, expressions of Unionism, economic and cultural developments, and the evolution of emancipation as a wartime policy.

The public is invited to join us as we discuss the role of newspapers, and in particular, the Journal’s role in fostering patriotism during the early years of the Civil War and how it helped connect the soldiers with the home front.

Sabattus Legion Hosts Blue Star Service Banner Ceremony The Sabattus Harry J. Conway American Legion post recently conducted a Blue Star Service Banner presentation to seven local military families with members currently serving in the military.

The following families or representative of serving military members were recognized with a Certificate and Blue Star Banner: Mrs. Katie Davis (1LT Adam Davis), Mrs. Tracey Rancourt (MSG James Rancourt), Miss Julie Rocray (SSG Woodbury Nickerson), Mrs. Mallory Hammond (SGT Cody Hammond), Mrs. Jamie Poulin (SGT Nicholas Poulin) and Mrs. Tiffany Libby (SGT Matthew Libby).

Also recognized, but unable to attend, were Mrs. Jess Jacobson (SGT Timothy Jacobson).

The assembled family and friend were invited to partake in some light refreshments at the conclusion of the ceremony. Maine Senator Garrett Mason, was present at the event to recognize the contributions of the those in the military and their families.

The Blue Star Service Banner program is an annual event hosted by the Sabattus American Legion Post to recognize military members and

their immediate family.

The Blue Star Service Banner was designed and patented in 1917 by World War I Army Capt. Robert L. Queissner of the 5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons serving on the front line. It quickly became the unofficial symbol of a child in the service.

On September 24, 1917, an Ohio congressman read the following into the Congressional Record: “…The mayor of Cleveland, the Chamber of Commerce and the governor of Ohio have adopted this service flag. The world should know of those who give so much for liberty. The dearest thing in all the world to a father and mother – their children.”

Blue Star Mothers and Gold Star Mothers organizations were established during World War I and remain active today.

During World War II, the Department of War issued specifications on manufacture of the flag, as well as guidelines indicating when the service flag could be flown and by whom. The Blue Star Service Banner typically displayed in windows is an 8.5 by 14-inch white field with a blue star(s) sewn onto a red

banner.

Today, families display these banners when they have a loved one serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The blue star represents one family member serving, and a banner can have up to five stars. The banner displayed in the front window of a home shows a family’s pride in their loved one serving in the military, and reminds others that preserving America’s freedom demands much.

Blue Star Service Banners were widely used during both world wars, but were not embraced during the Korean or Vietnam wars with the same enthusiasm. The American Legion rekindled that spirit of pride in our military men and women following the Sept.

11, 2001, terrorist attacks by providing banners to military families across the nation.
