To our loyal readers and customers, It’s been a rough several months for everybody. As we continue to abide by all the rules and pray for our seniors and vulnerable population, we are also anticipating the re-opening of many businesses in June. We welcome each of these companies as they reopen, employ people and re-invent themselves.

Now more than ever, Mainers need to continue to support these businesses with gift card purchases and purchases in general, if you have the means. Enjoy a staycation here in Maine, shop locally, and buy early Christmas gift cards and presents. There are so many places to go and things to see in Maine. Let’s keep it in Maine this summer to build our economy and support each other. Please keep in mind that patience and kindness is key to getting this challenge behind us and people and businesses of Maine need that right now.

I am trying hard to put a positive spin on this letter, but the truth of the matter is that the past couple of months for Turner Publishing and for all the small businesses have been a roller coaster of emotions. Don’t get me wrong. I know it hasn’t been easy for anyone. I just want to share a business perspective, and I know I am not alone.

The rst week of the stay at home safe order, I choked back the tears on a Zoom conference call when I stated to my staff I may need to lay folks off, all along knowing that the stabbing pit in my stomach echoed to my brain that I may lose my business and we may all be out of a job. The second week of the stay at home safe order, I frantically called and researched all I could about the SBA and the PPP program and disaster loans. I researched all DOL guidelines to nd the best case scenario for each individual employee. One night I read a document that was more than 500 pages long.

If I said I got two hours of sleep per night in the rst three weeks of the stay at home safe order, I would be exaggerating. I was trying to be strong and condent, but the truth is I wanted to crawl in bed with my blanky, suck my thumb and not come out until this thing was over. But I couldn’t; instead I spent many sleepless nights in my office, talking to business owners and clients who advertise in our papers.

We shared fears and many tears together. I saw business friends shut their doors not knowing if they would ever open up again. I actually had an outburst; well, OK, it was a meltdown during a Tri-County Mental Health board of directors meeting one night over a Zoom conference, which is not really the ideal place for a meltdown. On a positive note, I found out I was not alone in my challenges. It was comforting to express my fears and lean on friends, clients and family during this pandemic.

Discussions with friends and businesses grew into how we could come up with different ways to do business, and we all agreed it is not about making money. At this point, it’s about keeping people employed and circulating money. It’s about getting Maine back to a healthy place. Yes, it will be a year of losses, but together we can make it less of a loss.

So to the business owners, stay in the game, support each other and circulate money. Stay alive. People need us. People need jobs! It’s been a grind, bobbing and weaving, re-inventing business and taking care of employees without even knowing what the outcome will be. Please remember why you’re in business. The fact is that you wouldn’t be in business if you didn’t know how to grind through the tough times. Hang in there, and let’s all bring Maine back. We can re-invent ourselves and get through this. Let’s be creative, take our hits and come back strong.

We need each other, and we love Maine.

To the readers, back in April I wrote to all of you letting you know that we would be continuing to promote the good news although uncertain how the pandemic would affect our printing, mailing and advertisers. I am happy to say we have experienced minimal hiccups with our printing and mailing. Plans for LEAP memorial get underway FARMINGTON — Up to $10,000 has been approved for a memorial created by artist Very Johnson to those who died and were injured in the September LEAP Inc. explosion.

At the request of the LEAP Explosion Fund committee, Johnson was asked to submit a proposal for the committee to consider. United Way of the Tri-Valley Area holds the money raised and administered by the LEAP Explosion Fund committee. Fire Capt. Michael Bell was killed in the explosion, and six other firefighters and LEAP employee Larry Lord were injured.

The proposed idea is an interactive Healing Bells Memorial Sculpture to be installed in Bjorn Park in Farmington, across from the explosion site. It would be made out of fire extinguishers that are repurposed to create a series of seven bells that visitors can ring/chime. Musically healing sounds that represent the wind and breath of those who came to help at a time of need. Vera also intends to engage schools and children to draw pictures that could be chosen to use on the storyboard that tells the history of the event.

A brick path is envisioned as well.

“This idea came to me because of the memories of the sudden loss that I experienced with my own mother 10 years ago,” said Johnson. “I wanted a way to feel a connection to her after she had passed on. I was operating

a pottery studio where I used to teach classes. With my own two children, we took some time together in the studio and made some small clay sculptures. We have them placed around our home where we can see them every day.

They remind us of her. It’s more meaningful than photos or other objects because it was created with the intention to remember.

“No one will ever forget what happened. We can, however, collectively find a way to support the affected community and offer a place to go and turn grief into something beautiful, to help ease the pain of loss. Like a symbolic wailing wall — may we all say a prayer each time we hear the bells ring.”

Johnson envisions a collaboration with any and all interested local folks to help design, build and install components to make this project a reality. In the spirit of human connection it will tell the story and honor the legacy.

Johnson is seeking individuals to bhelp ring her project to fruition. These individuals would form a committee to further define the design of the project and take the next steps towards creating and installing it.

Lifelong Sabattus resident goes from “lunch lady” to “mask lady” almost overnight SABATTUS — Judy Cyr’s sewing hobby since her teenage years took on a new look due to the COVID-19 virus. Working in the cafeteria at LibbyTozier school in Litchfield when the pandemic struck, she stayed on shortly after the school closed to volunteer her time putting together meals that were being delivered to homes in the community.

However, at 75, she thought it might be prudent to stay at home, since she was at high risk for contracting the virus. Not used to just staying home and doing nothing, she decided to use a piece of fabric she already had (a piece of tablecloth) and along with her sewing talents began to make masks for family, neighbors and friends.

When it became a requirement for all to wear a mask when in public, she set a goal to make 500 masks for those in the local community.

Her daughter, Rose Cyr, began distributing the masks to local businesses, where they were to be made available for anyone to take “free of charge.”

She also made some home deliveries to local senior citizens who were not go-

Having made and given away 1000 masks, there appeared to still be a demand for more within the community. With more do-

nated material from friends and family, including her son Bobby Cyr — a U. S. Navy veteran — from Virginia, she continued to spend most of her days cutting/sewing together more masks. Soon she was up to 1,500, setting herself a new goal of 2,000.

To honor the year of the great pandemic, she felt the appropriate number should be 2,020, making that mask out of patriotic material. To help offset costs, people have been dropping off donations at her home.

“If there is material and time available,” she continues to make more masks as they are needed. Nearing the end of May, she has

Cyr said she has heard from the local postmaster, as well as other local businesses, how grateful people — especially the elderly— have been being able to get the masks for free. When asked why she is not charging anything, she simply stated she “felt the need in the community was there, and I’m doing my part in helping out.”

As the granddaughter of a WW1 veteran, the widow of a veteran (Rob-

ert M. “Moe” Cyr Sr.) and the mother of two veterans — including daughter Susan Davies — she has been active for many years in local organizations and patriotic observances and fundraisers.

Presently, as past president and a longtime member of the Sabattus American Legion Auxiliary Unit 135, she is saving pieces of each of the patterns used in making the many masks to put together and donate a special “2020 Pandemic Quilt” for the auxiliary to raffle off to help make up for funds lost while the Sabattus American Legion building is closed due to the pandemic.

United Way of Tri-Valley is holding Spring Spruce Up online sale FARMINGTON — The United Way of Tri-Valley opted to cancel its annual Mother’s Day Rose sale in early May. Because the organization still plans to be around long after this pandemic is over and has so many programs and partners doing great work and needing funding, it is holding a Virtual Spring Spruce Up Sale.

Five nurses, two others recognized for excellence at Franklin Memorial FARMINGTON — After a week full of special activities in coordination with national nurses’ week, nursing leaders and peers recognized seven Franklin Memorial Hospital nursing and direct care professionals on May 8 who demonstrate exceptional clinical practice and professionalism, through the organization’s 9th annual Nursing and Direct Care Professionals Excellence Awards.

Those recognized support the advancement of patient care by demonstrating MaineHealth’s core values of patient centered, respect, integrity, excellence, ownership, and innovation.

Franklin County man to walk 1,000 miles in region FARMINGTON — Local hiker and outdoor writer Doug Dunlap, of Farmington, has set a goal of walking 1,000 miles in Franklin County to encourage everyone to get outside and also to raise money for the United Way. Dunlap will walk an average of just less than 143 miles a month for seven months and will finish his journey on Sept. 30.

Dunlap wants to encourage county residents and visitors to appreciate the magnificent forest, foothill, mountain and waterway terrain in what he considers some of the most beautiful outdoor country in eastern North America.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many families and

individuals have discovered walking, which offers good exercise, long views, clean air, opportunity to see Maine wildlife – and a welcome break from stress.

The new paddling season provides yet more opportunity to enjoy Franklin County outdoors.

His second mission is to call attention to the efforts of United Way and United Way partner agencies that serve Franklin County’s most vulnerable residents.

From parents of infants and toddlers, to the most senior citizens, and hundreds of people in between, the agencies provide access to food, clothing, shelter, health, mental health, addiction and domestic violence-related services; and

Virtual train rides can appeal to the housebound Victor Block

You’re enjoying an adventure for the senses as you journey through the soaring Alps Mountains in Switzerland. You immediately understand why the magnificent view that surrounds you in Colorado inspired the words of “America the Beautiful.�

You channel Harry Potter during a ride over the towering viaduct that the Hogwarts Express crossed in the popular film series.

These and other equally dramatic experiences can be yours while you travel no further than in front of your computer. With people now spending more time than usual at home, railroad buffs, lovers of the outdoors and anyone else seeking a close-up encounter with Mother Nature may take a virtual train ride in destinations around the world.

Several websites offer simulated YouTube experiences that place viewers on excursions certain to entertain the eye and satisfy the longing to escape the daily grind, even if only for a brief time. Some offer observers an engineer’s view of the passing scenery; all provide a realistic, if admittedly imagined, ride on the rails.

If you have enjoyed an outing by rail in the past,

you may relive the experience and rekindle memories. If not, you’ll have an opportunity to check out train trips you may wish to add to your bucket list for future planning.

A day-long ride on the Glacier Express to enjoy the snowy wonderland of Switzerland finds a place on many a person’s wish list. Just when you think you’ve seen the most spectacular landscape possible, another one which surpasses it in beauty comes into view.

The setting is very different, but by no means less awe-inspiring, on the cog railway that climbs to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado.

Since 1891, what’s said to be the highest cog railroad in the world has carried millions of passengers through and above lush forests of aspen and pine trees and past streams cascading down steep hillsides. Those who make the journey share the spectacle that prompted a youthful English teacher in 1893, upon reaching the pinnacle, to write about “Purple mountain majesties.�

The Jacobite Steam Train would be popular even without its Harry Potter connection. Its route passes through the Scottish Highlands, traverses the country’s highest mountains and skirts deep freshwater and seawater lochs.

Adding to its appeal is the fact that some of the train’s carriages were used in the

They may go by a different name but the fjords of Norway share the beauty of the Scottish lochs.

They’re among natural features that greet passengers riding the Flam Railway. The short route also offers breathtaking views of steep mountains, plunging ravines, rushing waterfalls and high-altitude farms.

Mountain scenery also lies outside windows of

the Belgrade-Bar Railway along its route from Serbia to Montenegro. As the train makes its way through the Dinaric Alps, it crosses 435 bridges, passes through 254 tunnels and speeds through deep canyons.

The surroundings through which the Odontotos Diakofto Kalavryta railway passes may not be as dramatic as some, but more than makes up any such failings in other ways.

For one thing, it claims fame as the narrowest public cogwheel train in the world. The tracks were

constructed using materials found in the area. They pass through a gorge nestled between steep cliffs that are home to waterfalls and caves, and by the oldest monastery in Greece, which was built in 362 AD. The Ferrocarril Central American Andino railway also traverses a canyon, but there any similarities to its Greek cousin end.

As it travels some 200 miles through the Peruvian Andes, the train zigs, zags and passes through 66 tunnels, including one of the highest shafts built

for railroads in the world.

When it was constructed in the 19th century, the railway was considered to be one of the greatest engineering feats on Earth.

Last month we discussed how to remain safe on the road. We focused on the latest pandemic, but those skills to stay safe from COVID-19 will also work for most communicable diseases. Let’s talk about other safety issues.

If you prepare, camping will be an extremely rewarding experience.

It’s impossible to plan for every possible emergency, but there are steps you can take to expect the unexpected. It should goes without saying that before the season begins you have your camper and tow vehicle inspected and checked out.

An emergency roadside kit including flares or roadside markers, jumper cables and some other small items should always be on board. Duct tape is essential as it can temporarily fix things that are loose and shouldn’t be. WD-40 or some other penetrating oil should be included that will loosen things that should be loose but aren’t.

I also make sure I have some silicone sealant to fix any leak that might develop. A toolbox is critical and should include an array of screwdrivers, wrenches and sockets, along with some electrical

testing equipment. I also bring a small ax or saw to prepare firewood.

Space is a premium when camping or traveling, so you will have to be creative. One final note : For preparedness, every camping trip has a pur-

I want to put special emphasis on tires. Many people forget about them, but the wheels are arguably the most important part. I recommend buying quality tires. Often, trailers come with inferior cheap tires that can be a safety issue. At the very

least, think about investing in a tire pressure monitor system for the tires. If a tire blows at 50 m.p.h., it can rip apart and do thousands of dollars worth of damage to the camper before you are even aware the tire has blown. This tire monitoring system will give you warning and peace of mind.

Campground lot size can be an issue. If you are in a regular campground make sure you give them your dimensions. It can be downright annoying to pull into a site with your 30-foot camper and find out the site is only 24 feet long. If you have slideouts, make sure the campground knows that as well.

Believe it or not, there are some campgrounds that have sites that can’t accommodate awnings or slide outs. Most commercial sites are relatively level, but you will want to make sure you have leveling blocks too. If your

camping trip includes a stay on unimproved land, do your research. Make sure you can fit into the area and it is not in a flash flood zone.

With good planning and safety in mind, you will be ready for the unexpected. Remember, camping is fun and relaxing. Make memories and enjoy the summer.

The Gentlemen

After striking box office gold with his liveaction version of Disney’s “Aladdin,� director Guy Ritchie has returned to the genre that made him famous, with dark gangster comedies like “Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels� and “Snatch.�

His new film, “The Gentlemen,� offers the director’s longtime fans something both fresh and nostalgic for his early days. In fact, he’s assembled an all-star cast of actors who’ve previously starred in his films.

The plot revolves around American entrepreneur Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey),

who transformed himself into London’s most prominent underground marijuana businessman. He and his auto-repair wife, Rosalind (Michelle Dockery), have also became part of high society from their successes. One day, he decides to retire from his business before managing to find his successor, another American, named Matthew Berger (Jeremy Strong). But Mickey starts to find himself in a peg when he rejects an offer from mob informant Dry Eye (Henry Golding) to buy out his empire.

This begins a chain of events that will put many characters in the firing line.

First, a gang of breakdancing thieves spearheaded by Coach (Colin Farrell) rob Mickey’s secret base of operations.

Then a sleazy reporter named Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is hired by tabloid editor Big Dave (Eddie Marsan) to dig some dirt on Mickey’s business. The reporter even shows off his findings to Mickey’s business partner Raymond

(Charlie Hunnam) in the form of a screenplay he has written.

Throughout the movie, the story is recounted from Fletcher’s script with testimonial rebuttals from Raymond. It offers interesting viewpoints about whether or not any of the events presented did happen. This allows the viewer to interpret and analyze the story in any way they see it. Unfortunately, the main story gets rudely interrupted by a subplot involving Raymond trying to get a young woman out of a group of drug-addicted friends. Although it does come into play at the end of the movie, it could’ve been either cut down or rewritten to keep the film going at its tight pace.

There are some traces of early Ritchie to be found in this film, with his sharp dialogue and enjoyable action. But fans will likely be disappointed that it doesn’t feel as fresh as some of his earlier titles.

Those who were just discovering him through his Sherlock Holmes series

will more than likely find some interest in exploring more of his filmography.

In any case, this film is a nice gateway for newcomers alike who want to see his signature style.

McConaughey fits well into the role of a southernfried drug kingpin with lots of grit added to his charismatic charm. Both Hunnam and Grant work well off each other giving their scenes some intense hilarity, while the latter oozes slime and scum in every one of his scenes.

Though underused, Farrell shines with a heavily Irish accent to accentuate his performance.

While not one of his best films, “The Gentlemen� is average Guy Ritchie. with a nice dose of entertaining dark comedy.

It works fine on its own if you just want to see something different after endless hours of Netflix streaming at home.

State announces $14.4 million in new unclaimed property AUGUSTA — The State of Maine Treasurer’s Office has announced the addition of more than $12 million to Maine’s Unclaimed Property Fund, and Mainers are being urged to check whether any of that cash belongs to them. Local legislators are working to make sure anyone owed money is able to receive it. “Any cash belonging to Mainers should get to them and their accounts, and that’s what this program is all about,� said Sen. Nate Libby of Lewiston. “Ev-

eryone should check and see if their name is on this list, especially given the economic crisis we’re in due to the ongoing pandemic.� “Unclaimed property� is money owed to Maine people by third parties, such as former employers, banks or utility companies.

Organizations are required to give unclaimed property to the State Treasurer after a specified period of time, after which the owner of the unclaimed property can retrieve it from the state.

Maine National Guard supports long-term care facilities with mask fit testing AUGUSTA — Over two sessions held April 24 and 27, a total of 24 soldiers and airmen were trained on fit testing procedures for N95 respirator masks.

Maine CDC hosted the training as the organization continues their partnership with Maine Emergency Management Agency and the Maine National Guard.

“We’re pleased to offer support for this new mission set as Maine continues to respond to COVID-19,” said Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, Maine’s adjutant general. “We continue to engage in planning with our state partners and are prepared for additional mis-

sions.”

Teams of approximately four National Guardsmen will be dispatched to conduct fit testing for staff at requesting congregate care facilities identified by Maine CDC and MEMA. This includes but is not limited to food service staff, housekeeping, recreational and other staff working in the facilities.

The Maine National Guard is prepared to make the same teams available for other missions in support of Maine CDC.

‘Here We Are’ tells one nurse’s frontline story

Arlene Wing, a registered nurse who holds a master of health services administration degree and is a certified hypnotherapist, created a blog on Facebook she calls “About COVID-19. “She mostly shares information she has come across that she thinks would be informative and useful, but a few weeks ago, Wing got personal and wrote about her own experience with COVID-19.

With her permission and blessing, I am sharing her post, along with a poem she wrote.

This is her story: “Speaking as someone who had COVID-19, I would like to say I appreciate those who are doing their best to keep others safe. It is an act of caring ,and it is requiring sacrifice from us all.

It is distressing to see people on TV still saying it’s only like the flu. I can attest to the fact that it’s not just like the

flu. The flu never sent me to the emergency room gasping for breath. The flu never left me with long term effects.

After six weeks I still have fatigue days when I don’t have energy to do anything. I still can’t go outside without asthma-like attacks of shortness of breath and coughing. Sometimes those attacks come without any reason even when I’m indoors. The flu never did that to me.

The flu never killed 80 people and rising in a single nursing home that I ever heard of.

The flu doesn’t infect a million people around the world every 12 days and rising. The flu doesn’t cause us to build hospitals in tents and dig mass graves.

I pray that people will be caring enough to protect the other people around them.

I’ve seen the testimonies of many people who say they didn’t believe it until it killed their sister, father, grandmother, daughter... I don’t want

that kind of pain to happen to anyone. The sad thoughts of, “if only I hadn’t visited them, if only I’d worn a mask” will not bring them back.

Here we are, all stepping back to a slower time. A time that some of us have never known. A time when the rhythms of the earth were seen and understood, not cloaked behind smog and frantic energy. A time when open schedules spanned in front of us in days and hours instead of minutes and seconds. A time when cooking was a celebration for the food that we all knew might not be there tomorrow. A time when mothers were home with us and we could all see time stretching before us, limitless and free.

Here we are, feeling the fear of our fragility. Knowing that the spark that burns within us can be so easily snuffed out. Feeling the surge of love and gratitude for those who are precious to us and then the stabbing anticipation of possi-

9 Considerations for your 401(k) rollover

A 401(k) (or a 403(b), 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, Thrift Savings Plan, Profit Sharing Plan, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, etc.) is a retirement account that is sponsored by an employer and offered to the employees, also known as the participants in the plan. These types of plans are known as defined contribution plans and are often attractive to people as they can offer cost-effective ways to invest, receive investment advice, and oftentimes, receive an employer match. Regardless of the plan you have, here are some things to consider.

Open investment architecture: Be sure to understand what you will have access to for investment options regardless of the rollover option you choose.

Consolidate: Many people have several “old” retirement plans at former employers. It can be easier to manage the money when it is all in one place.

Required minimum Distributions: Be sure not to miss these. They begin at age 70.5 (now 72 if you turned 70.5 after January 1, 2020). Consolidation is also useful when calculating these distributions.

Southern, coastal forest landowners needed for Maine Forest Tick Survey ORONO — Forest landowners in southern and coastal Maine are partnering with University of Maine researchers as part of the state’s first active tick surveillance citizen science program.

The Maine Forest Tick Survey based at UMaine seeks volunteer landowners with 10 – 1,000 wood-

ed acres in Androscoggin, Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Kennebec, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo and York counties. The citizen scientists will collect ticks for identification and testing for associated pathogens, and send them to the university for analysis.

Online training and collection materials, including

drag cloths and vials, will be provided for volunteers in June.

Sampling will begin in July, the month when black-legged tick nymphs (the life stage responsible for most human infections) are active. Participating citizen scientists will be asked to sample for ticks on three days throughout

the month for an hour each day, and will receive the identification and pathogen test results of their tick samples, as well as reports about the findings of the entire project, during the winter.

The Maine Forest Tick Survey focuses on helping landowners understand tick-borne risks in their

woods in order to protect themselves. The researchers leading the survey — faculty members Allison Gardner, Jessica Leahy and Carly Sponarski — also are studying the relationship between land management practices and tick-borne risk to help better protect landowners, recreationists and forest workers in

Maine.

Franklin Savings Bank has announced the retirement of Jay Branch Manager Diane Jackson and named Amanda Lee as her successor. “It’s hard to imagine our Jay branch without Diane after a dedicated fourteen year career here in the office,” says Shelley Deane, executive vice president, director of human resources and administration.

“Diane is known throughout the bank and our community as a mortgage expert. Her knowledge of the industry is impressive and will be greatly missed by both the bank and our customers.

We are fortunate to be in a position where we have another financial industry expert, Amanda Lee, on deck and ready to assume the responsibilities that Diane will leave behind. Together, they will see us through a seamless transition over the next several months.”

Jackson, a vice president, came to Franklin Savings Bank in May of 2005 as an assistant branch manager and loan officer from another financial institution.

In 2015, Jackson was promoted to Jay Branch Manager after long-term branch manager, Lorna Niedner, was promoted to the director residential and consumer lending in the main office in Farmington. Jackson and Niedner made a strong duo in the branch for many years, serving both commercial and residential customers in and around the area. Jackson is dedicated to the greater Jay and Livermore communities, which can be seen through her ongoing commitment to the chamber executive board as well as leading many community services activities throughout each year.

In her life outside of the bank, Diane is married to Dave Jackson, they have two grown sons along with two amazing daughter-inlaw’s and four fabulous grandchildren. Jackson is scheduled to retire the first of July and we wish her the very best in her next endeavor.

In the meantime, Jackson’s successor, Amanda Lee, will be working along-

side her to continue the legacy that Jackson leaves behind. Lee, from Wilton, has joined the Franklin Savings Bank team from her previous branch manager role at a local credit union where she dedicated many years to serving her customers and communities.

“We’ve watched and competed with Amanda for a while now. We know she lives and breathes the same values as we do here at Franklin Savings Bank.

She’s an experienced manager, lender and community leader,” says, Morgan Allarie, vice president, director of branch administration and deposit services.

Lee holds a degree in business economics from the University of Maine at Farmington. She stays active in the community by volunteering for various Franklin County Chamber of Commerce events, serving as the Treasurer for area youth baseball and serving in a leadership role for an area ATV club.

“Amanda is not only going to be an exciting addition to our Jay office, but

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. For the crust, cream the butter and sugar until light in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.

Combine the flour and salt and, with the mixer on low, add to the butter until just mixed. Dump the dough onto a wellfloured board and gather into a ball. Flatten the dough with floured hands and press it into a 9 by 13 by 2-inch baking sheet, building up a 1/2-inch edge on all sides. Chill.

Bake the crust for 15 to 20 minutes, until very lightly browned. Let cool on a wire rack. Leave the oven on.

For the filling, whisk together the eggs, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and flour. Pour over the crust and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the filling is set. Let cool to room temperature.

Cut into triangles and dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Free invasive plant management plans available to farm and woodland owners in Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Somerset and Waldo counties AUGUSTA — Farm and woodland owners and operators in five Maine counties may be eligible to receive a free invasive plant survey and management plan, prepared by a natural resource professional from the local Soil and Water Conservation District.

Staff serving Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Somerset and Waldo counties are looking for landowners or operators who would like to learn more about the invasive plants on their farms and woodlands.

Invasive plants like Asiatic bittersweet vines, thorny multiflora rose

shrubs, sprawling Japanese barberry and others can create dense tangles in forests, wetlands, and fields, crowding out native plants and young trees. Along forest edges and hedgerows, thickets of invasive shrubs can reduce the area of productive fields. Some invasive plants create habitat for ticks, cause skin rashes, or are harmful if eaten by livestock.

Many farmers and woodland owners know that invasive plants are present but aren’t sure what to do about them. Others may not know how to recognize invasive plants. Hav-

ing a site visit and survey from the local district is a chance to talk with a natural resource professional, learn to identify harmful plants and receive guidance on how to manage them. Survey data also helps scientists understand invasive plant distribution in Maine because data is contributed to the online mapping tool iMapInvasives (imapinvasives. org), the central repository for invasive plant data in Maine.

This service is free to farm and woodland owners or operators thanks to a grant from the United

States Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service administered by the Maine Natural Areas Program (maine.gov/dacf/mnap) in the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. The project is also funded in part by the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund (maine.gov/ifw/ mohf), in which proceeds from the sale of a dedicated instant lottery ticket are used to support outdoor recreation and natural resource conservation.

Space is limited and landowners/operators must meet basic USDA – NRCS

eligibility requirements.

Site visits will be conducted during the growing season, but sign ups are open now.

Participating landowners and operators are encouraged to act on the management plans they receive by implementing invasive plant treatments.

Treatment funding may be available by applying to the USDA NRCS Environmental Quality Incentives Program through the local USDA NRCS office (nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/me/contact/ local/).

Checklists allow all to enjoy the Maine outdoors safely this summer BETHEL — Biking, boating, hiking, fishing, birdwatching and other outdoor activities are great ways to stay healthy in the age of COVID-19 – provided they are conducted in accordance with all public health restrictions and guidance.

As summer approaches, Maine’s conservation and recreation communities, natural resource agencies and outdoor brands developed some checklists to help everyone enjoy Maine’s outdoors in ways that are safe and responsible.

Before you hit the trail, cast a line, or launch a canoe, be sure to:

Find the Right Time and Place

• Know what’s available: Consider visiting a nearby Wildlife Management Area, or a less-trafficked state park, public land, or local land trust (Maine Trail Finder is a great resource!)

• Check before you go: While some popular conservation lands have closed recently because of overuse and crowding, the vast majority remain open to the public. Visit websites to see the latest information on closures or conditions. Please respect all property closures.

• Have a plan B: If the parking lot is full, the destination is too crowded. If your first destination has a busy parking lot, go to the next spot on your list!

• Avoid peak times: Get out earlier or later in the day.

• Expect limited services: Facilities like public restrooms could be closed, so plan accordingly.

• Dress for success: Be aware of current conditions and bring appropriate gear to match those conditions. Local outdoor brands are open for online sales and are available to give advice on appropriate gear and equipment.

• Support local businesses: Many local businesses – from restaurants and retailers to guides and lodges – are working hard to provide services in ways that are safe and in keeping with public health rules and guidance. If you’re comfortable, consider finding ways to support them while you’re enjoying the outdoors.

• Don’t take risks: Stick to familiar terrain and avoid unnecessary chances to avoid injuries, which add stress on first responders and medical resources.

• Be aware of the rules: Check before you go to see what activities are allowed. If dogs are permitted remember to bring a leash and to properly dispose of waste.

• Watch out for ticks and biting insects: Wear light-colored pants, closedtoe shoes, and apply EPA-approved bug repellent.

• Leave home prepared with sanitizer and disinfectant.

• If you’re sick, stay home: It puts others at risk when you leave home while exhibiting symptoms related to COVID-19, or if you have recently been exposed to the virus.

Peter Alfond Foundation donates $48 million to MaineGeneral, AYCC AUGUSTA — The Peter Alfond Foundation has donated a $40 million endowment to MaineGeneral Health and $8 million to the Alfond Youth & Community Center.

The money will allow MaineGeneral to significantly expand its prevention programs to sustain improvements to community health. The Alfond Youth & Community Center will be able to hire a wellness director and wellness trainers.

“The $40 million Peter Alfond Prevention and Healthy Living Center Endowment Fund supports innovative approaches to improve lives,” said MaineGeneral President & CEO Chuck Hays. “With this investment, we will continue to break down barriers to care and wellness services to better address the health of community members. This requires us to provide tools and services where people live, work and play.

“This funding comes at a critical time for our health care system,” Hayes said. “COVID-19 has dealt a severe nega-

tive financial blow to all health care organizations, requiring hard decisions.

Maintaining funding for community health is always a challenge. This gift allows us not only to continue but to expand our prevention and healthy living programming as we focus operational dollars on COVID-19 recovery and disease-specific health care needs.”

The endowment supports investments in: • Expanding the reach of MaineGeneral’s current Prevention & Healthy Living – now named the Peter Alfond Prevention & Healthy Living Center – which provides free and low-cost classes on healthy cooking and eating, physical activity and mind-body health. Classes will expand to worksites as well as other places throughout the area to increase access.

• Enhancing access to teaching kitchens, including working with our community partners, and using pop-up kitchens to teach individuals how to make healthy, affordable and tasty food at home

with their families. Additionally, this funding will support culinary medicine efforts throughout our system.

• Expanding community health outreach through a team of Community Health Workers who will meet people “where they are at” and

link them to needed care and resources to improve their health and quality of life. CHWs are trusted members of the community who understand community resources and needs. CHWs facilitate access to services and improve the cultural competence of service

Farmington Rotary cancels events, but there are still ways to participate FARMINGTON — Farmington Rotary acknowledges that many of its events cannot guarantee social distancing and safety, therefore it is postponing its annual June yard sale and hopes to host one in the fall.

It is also canceling the traditional Fourth of July parade, although it hopes to still creatively engage the community somehow to recognize this special day so stay tuned for details.

Onion sales that support Guatemala’s Safe Passage are also canceled for this year.

Despite fundraisers and events being postponed or canceled, Rotary is still very active. Farmington Rotarians continue to meet weekly by Zoom and en-

RANGELEY — The Rangeley Friends of the Arts wants to brighten the downtown area for all to enjoy.

Along the outside of the RFA Lakeside Theater, 2493 Main St., along the walkway beside Blue Flame, the RFA will host a community art installation,”Together We Can Reach For Amazing!”

All ages are welcome to participate.

The RFA will provide anyone interested in participating with a 24x24 inch board to decorate with paints or other media with each square expressing the theme “happiness.” The art will be displayed outdoors,

so those decorating square should consider this in their choice of media. If desired, the RFA will apply a top coat of clear weatherproof sealer to protect the art from the elements.

Entries should be completed and delivered to the theater before the end of June. The installation will be displayed from July through September.

The RFA hopes to have an awards event in August.

The art will be returned to the artists in October.

Stop by the RFA Lakeside Theater between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday to register and pick up a board.

The reason? Ticks. What a sad thing when all they need to do, to be safe, is to spray their hunting duds well with Permethrin and remain vigilant.

Granted, tick diseases are nothing to fool around with. In fact, in the overall scheme of things, some Lyme infections and associated diseases might be far more perilous and debilitating than coronavirus.

3.) OUTDOOR PURSUITS: When on a hike, bike or walk, try to remain in the center of a trail in order to minimize your exposure. Remember, ticks cannot fly; they crawl up.

Avoid sitting directly on the ground, woodpiles or fallen logs — areas where ticks love to live.

4.) PERSONAL PROTECTION: Wear tick repellent clothing or spray your clothing with Permethrin or some other repellent that contains DEET. It doesn’t hurt to tuck your trousers inside your socks and wear tight fitting clothing such as turtlenecks or collars that button.

Permethrin, or tick repellents that contain Permethrin, are available online, at sporting goods outlets, and the big box stores. Don’t spray it on your skin.

Best method is to hang your hunting clothes on a line on a still morning and spray your hunt

duds liberally. Give it a half hour and you are good to go. Experts tell me that one spray job of Permethrin will get you through the turkey season.

SeniorsPlus finds need greater than ever for older Americans LEWISTON â&#x20AC;&#x201D; May is traditionally Older Americans Month, and 2020 is no different except the circumstances surrounding May this year are very different.

With the challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis, SeniorsPlus, western Maineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s designated Area Agency on Aging, has faced expanded operations since March as a result of increased community demand that it has never seen before. Services at SeniorsPlus include information and assistance, short-term care management, Medicare counseling, caregiver support and respite, money management, and nutrition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our staff will tell you they have never been busier,â&#x20AC;? said Betsy Sawyer-Manter, president and CEO of SeniorsPlus, noting that the organization has remained in operation throughout the pandemic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In addition to the increased demand for food, our squad of social workers together with our other employees have had to develop new systems to ensure our interactions with our clients are not interrupted and remain strong.â&#x20AC;?

Education classes now

offered online include â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coping with the New Normal within the COVID-19 Pandemic Support Groupâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Zoom 101,â&#x20AC;? as well as the usual exercise classes, health and wellness classes including evidence-based courses, and the usual array of support groups, including Coping with Grief and Caregiver Support.

Meanwhile, with the increase in homebound people without nearby supports, meal delivery soared. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In April, as the pandemic in Maine surged, our meal delivery program hit a high of 1,800 meals as compared with 800 a year ago,â&#x20AC;? said Sawyer-Manter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This increase is in addition to the need to deliver boxes of shelf-stable food for our clients so that they have added food security during these unusual times.

These deliveries of shelfstable food are especially critical for our many clients who live in a rural area with no corner grocery store, family, or even neighbors nearby.â&#x20AC;?
