Cabin Fever Reliever Living History Day at Norlands LIVERMORE — The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center, 290 Norlands Road, will be open Saturday, Feb. 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate “Cabin Fever Reliever” Living History Day, featuring horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice-cutting demonstrations, craft activities, one-room schoolhouse, mansion tours and a special tribute to George Washington. Activities are provided by interpreters in period clothing portraying people of the 1800’s Norlands neighborhood or Livermore’s Washburn family.

This annual event is a belated celebration of President’s Day – 1870 style.

A special tribute to America’s first president, George Washington, takes place at 12:30 p.m and again at 2:30 p.m. After his death in 1799, Washington’s birthday became a day of remembrance and celebration, including toasts, elaborate galas with dancing, laying of wreaths, and fancy cake using a recipe from Martha Washing-

ton. Washington’s actual day of birth (Feb. 22) became a federal holiday in 1885. At first, the holiday was meant to honor only George Washington. However, many people considered it a day to honor both Washington and 16th President Abraham Lincoln (b.

Feb 12, 1809). In 1971, the holiday officially became Presidents Day, a time to honor all presidents past and present; the day was moved to the third Monday of February.

Norlands’ interpreters Shelly Cox and Jeanette MacDonald, portraying the Washburn’s 19th-century neighbors, will bake a version of Martha Washington’s cake; stop by for a slice of cake and participate in the celebration.

Another highlight of the day is a special program on Lt. Samuel Benjamin.

His story will be told by “Clara Howard,” portrayed

by Willi Irish, Norlands director of interpretation and training. At 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m., Clara will share excerpts from

Benjamin’s diary kept during the Revolutionary War. Samuel Benjamin (1753-1824) was one of the first to respond to the call. He fought at the Battle of Lexington in 1775 and served as a sergeant at the Battle of Bunker Hill. After the British evacuated Boston, Benjamin was then at Fort Ticonderoga in New York. Eventually, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Massachusetts Continental Line and went on to serve at Valley Forge, Saratoga, Monmouth and Yorktown. Benjamin was an early settler in Livermore during the time when it was called Port Royal and still a part of Oxford County. He married Tabitha Livermore and went on to have seven children, including Patty Benjamin Washburn.

Visitors to the Norlands can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride and see traditional ice cutting demonstrations nearby on Bartlett Pond. Craft activities take place in the cozy and warm Washburn kitchen.

The schoolmarm, “Coril-

la Rose,” will be ready to greet scholars in the oneroom schoolhouse. In the 1867 mansion, visitors can take a guided tour. Several family stories will be shared on the tour of this elegant home, especially stories about the family’s relationship with Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.

Unique family artifacts are on display, such as the armband and sash Elihu Washburn wore as a pallbearer for Lincoln’s funeral and a hair wreath, made with hair from every member of the Washburn family.

Hair work was extremely popular during the latter half of the 1800’s. The sentimentalism of the Victorian age made these types of keepsakes popular for anyone who was separated from their family members or close friends, either by distance or by death. The Washburn wreath is lasting evidence of the fondness and intimacy among this extraordinary family.

‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ (Columbia Pictures)

Lucas Allen The 1995 movie version of “Jumanji,” based on Chris Van Allsburg’s book starring the late Robin Williams was such a time capsule for the 1990s that the generation who first saw it still remembers it today. Now comes an unexpected surprise in the form of “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which attempts to bridge the gap between the nostalgia crowd and

the current generation the same way the newest “Star Wars” films are. It’s directed by Jake Kasdan, who seems perfect to create a fun adventure film, considering his father, Lawrence Kasdan, was the writer of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The movie begins when nerdy Spencer (Alex Wolff), jock Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), popular Bethany (Madison Iseman) and shy Martha (Morgan Turner) all have to serve detention together and are assigned to cleaning up the school basement. During the cleanup, they discover an old video game console with a game, “Jumanji,” attached to it. When they turn it on, all four of them are transported into the game’s jungle setting.

Once there, they become the avatars they chose to

play, including the very brave Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), weapons personnel Moose (Kevin Hart), portly Professor Shelly (Jack Black) and slim but strong Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan).

After being picked up by the kindly Dr. Nigel (Rhys Darby), he explains that they have to bring the fabled jewel of Jumanji that was stolen by the evil Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale) to the mountainous jaguar and lift the jungle’s curse. Using their strengths and weaknesses, the foursome have to put aside their differences and work together to finish the game and return home. To do so, they not only have to return the jewel and evade Van Pelt’s lackeys but also get some help from a fifth player named Alex (Nick Jonas) who

has been trapped in the game for 20 years.

It’s difficult to categorize this movie as a straightforward sequel, remake or reboot when it does something new with the concept and makes references to the original.

But either way, it does a good job continuing what worked before while entering a different territory than what the original story brought. Fans of the original film will notice certain references that they’ll appreciate including a subtle tribute to Williams that works its way into one scene. It’s also a gamer’s movie that spoofs the ins and outs of playing video games and the logic that goes with it.

Those wanting to see this film as a fun action/ adventure/comedy will not be disappointed by the end result. It has

some good comedy plus a healthy dose of high-flying action in the spirit of the Indiana Jones films.

Though kids will most likely have a great time, parents may not want them exposed to some of the more grown-up humor. The only thing wrong with the action scenes is that some of the animals do not look lifelike when rendered in CGI, making them look like they came from a Pixar or DreamWorks animated movie.

It’s very odd to see four talented actors acting like teens let alone for the sake of a video game setting, but they manage to pull off the charm and likability that is needed.

Johnson is charismatic as usual, while he and Hart once again pull off that comic chemistry that was appealing in “Central Intelligence.” Black gets the

most laughs in a hilarious performance and Gillan is great as an insecure character with wonderful kung-fu action. Cannavale is simply OK in what is ultimately a one-dimensionally written villainous role.

In the spirit of the season, it’s worth seeing “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” on the big screen with the whole family. With the cold winter weather, it feels good to escape into a jungle world full of treacherous danger and hilarious fun that’ll excite you. Just roll the dice and take a chance.

In addition, the staff utilized the Healthy Habits questionnaire and measured patients’ body mass index, or BMI, at every well

child check to begin conversations with patients about healthy weight and overall wellness. Richmond further engaged the community with the 5210 message by hosting an annual 5K race with 48 participants completing the race. They also partnered

with the Umberhine Public Library in Richmond to hold a 5210-themed poster contest for the 10 children participating in the library’s summer reading program.

“Through our collaboration with the 5210 team, we have integrated evi-

dence-based approaches to discussing healthy behaviors,” shared Emma Ansara, FNP, clinical medical director at HealthReach. “Having concrete and easy-to-use tools has made addressing goals for weight, physical exercise and nutrition

more of a reality at annual well child visits.”

THE HEALTHY GEEZER Your future doesn’t have to include dentures in a glass by your bed

Q. I have vivid memories of my mother’s dentures in a glass next to her bed. As I enter my seventies, is this what I have to look forward to?

A. Let’s start with a definition. “Dentures ”— also called “complete dentures” or “plates” — are for people with no teeth. Dentures cover your entire upper or lower jaw.

There are removable partial dentures, too; these are made of replacement teeth attached to plastic bases, which are connected by metal framework.

If you practice good dental hygiene, you should be able to avoid dentures as you get older.

Losing your teeth is not considered a normal consequence of aging. Teeth are designed to last a lifetime Advancements in treatment and better oral hygiene have made dentures less necessary. One reputable survey showed that the rate that seniors lose their teeth has dropped by 60 percent since 1960.

But, if you are among the unfortunate who require dentures, here is some useful information.

Those dentures your mother wore can’t compare to the modern choppers. The latest technology and better materials make the dentures of today more comfortable and

better looking.

Dentures are placed on the gums, which are over bone. Sometimes one or more natural teeth are kept and they fit under the denture. A denture that is anchored by real teeth is called an “overdenture.”

An overdenture is more stable; it inhibits shifting in the mouth. Teeth used in overdentures are usually given a root canal, which replaces the pulp with filling material. The pulp is known commonly as the tooth’s “nerve.”

Immediately after dentures are made, they often feel odd in the mouth. There’s a period of adjustment. One difficult challenge is eating, which is never the same as it was before dentures.

The following are some pointers for eating with dentures:

* Don’t bite with your front teeth or pull your food outward from your mouth. * Chew food on both sides of your mouth simultaneously to stabilize your dentures. * Cut food into small pieces. * When you first eat with your dentures, you should avoid sticky foods, raw vegetables and hardto-chew meats. * It is more difficult to feel inside your mouth when you wear dentures, so be careful with hot foods and anything with small bones.

And here are some more challenges that usually confront denture-wearers: * Speaking is a different experience. You should

try speaking slowly at first, and practice by reading aloud. * You may have more saliva in your mouth. * When you sneeze, cough or yawn, your dentures may loosen. * Dentures have to be removed at least once daily to rest the tissue below them. Most denture-wearers remove their plates before bed, and store them a cleaning solution. * After you have been wearing dentures for years, your jaws become smaller, and the dentures don’t fit as well. Slippage, gum irritation and odor indicate that your dentures may not fit correctly.

If your dentures need a correction, go to your dentist. Relining and rebasing are alterations

that adjust your dentures. Rebasing involves making an entirely new denture base, while relining modifies the existing one. Both procedures maintain the denture’s existing artificial teeth.

It is also a good idea to make regular visits to the dentist. In addition to tending to your dentures, your dentist can examine your mouth for bone loss, oral cancer, infections and other conditions.

One last note about adhesives. They make wearing dentures easier. However, adhesives should not be used to compensate for dentures that don’t fit correctly. n

mittee.” Every FSA office is required to have a county committee, made up of local farmers elected by local farmers.

Nearly 7,800 FSA county committee members serve FSA offices nationwide, applying their knowledge and judgment to help FSA make important decisions on its commodity support programs, conservation programs,

indemnity and disaster programs, emergency programs and eligibility.

County committee members impact producers through their decision making and help shape the culture of a local FSA office, Hall noted. They also ensure fair and equitable administration of FSA farm programs in their counties and are accountable to the secretary

of agriculture. Members conduct hearings and reviews as requested by the state committee, ensure socially disadvantaged (SDA) farmers and ranchers are fairly represented, make recommendations to the state committee on existing programs, monitor changes in farm programs and inform farmers of the purpose and provisions of FSA programs. They

also assist with outreach and inform under-served producers, such as beginning farmers and ranchers, about FSA opportunities.

Chase & Sanborn coffee empire had its roots in central Maine

By Dale Potter-Clark A coffee brand that became world famous had its roots in central Maine.

James Solomon Sanborn was born in Wales, Maine, in 1835 and lived on Sanborn Road, Monmouth, as a child. He founded J.S. Sanborn Co. in Lewiston before 1870, selling spices, tea and coffee, then moved to Boston, where Caleb Chase owned a coffee roasting business.

James Solomon Sanborn was born in Wales, ME in 1835. He was co-founder of Chase & Sanborn Coffee Co. and proprietor of the registered horse stock farm in East Poland called “Elmwood Farm”.

to form Chase & Sanborn Coffee and Tea Company in 1874. They were the first to package ground coffee in sealed cans which became a phenomenon in New England and soon after from coast to coast. In 1893 they supplied all the coffee for the Chicago World’s Fair.

Business flourished, but Sanborn yearned for country living. In 1886 he bought Elmwood Farm, a 250-acre estate in Poland, where he summered and sold highbred horses. Empire Station was nearby where Poland Spring Hotel guests came and went by train. Sanborn convinced Maine Central Railroad to rename it the Elmwood Farm Station, giving his business name significant visibility with minimal effort and no cost. Many of his horses were sold to hotel clientele.

Within a year Sanborn added a two-story barn – some said the biggest and best in New England. Inside was a creamery, ice house, refrigerator, and a churn that could produce 40 pounds of butter.

The cellar held manure vaults, pigpens, horse stalls and space for vegetables. An eight-horsepower engine provided power for saws, churns, cutting silage and pumping water. Another wing stored carriages and farm implements. The second level held a workshop and sleeping quarters for the farm help. Over the next few years Sanborn expanded to include 500 acres, an apple orchard of 600 trees, a Colonial mansion; six stock barns; two farmhouses; two cottages; blacksmith and carpentry shops.

Animals included registered Holstein cattle,

sheep, swine and horses. Windmills provided power that fed enough spring water to supply every building. Sanborn also added a quarter mile trotting track and a 150 by 50-foot covered riding rink where his horses were trained, exercised and shown.

Sanborn sold registered stallions and brood mares. His prize was Gemare, a thoroughbred Arabian stallion that stood 16 hands high, and weighed 1,250 pounds.

The straight talk on declawing TURNER — Declawing is the procedure by which a cat’s nails are permanently removed. It is different from a simple trimming because the last part of the toe is amputated to prevent the nail from growing back. This procedure is very controversial and can lead to heated debate among groups of veterinary professionals.

Many people consider the procedure an elective cosmetic procedure and advocate that it be banned.

Others consider it a necessary surgery to help protect the bond between pet parents and their active cats.

Cats scratch for several reasons which include conditioning their claws, marking territory and exercising the muscles in their backs. Cat claws are made up of layers of nail material (keratin) which

are similar to the layers of an onion and these layers need to be shed to main-

tain healthy nails. The best way to remove the old layers is to scratch at certain materials. Sometimes a favorite scratching post is a beloved piece of furniture. The cat’s nails also have scent glands that leave behind that cat’s particular scent to signal that this territory belongs to that cat. Finally, the stretching action needed to get a good scratch helps to exercise and strengthen the back muscles.

In some cases, cats can be so destructive with their scratching that their owners are forced to have this surgery done or they would have to find an-

other home for the cat or, even worse, have it euthanized. Frequent nail trimming, redirecting scratching behavior, and the application of nail caps (Soft Paws) are alternatives to the drastic step of declawing. But when all other avenues have been eliminated, this surgery may be necessary to save the relationship between the cat and its family.

Ideally, declawing is done when the cat is under a year of age and has not become too heavy.

The surgery is easier to perform on young animals and recovery is a little easier if the cat is an

ideal body weight. After the nail shave been permanently removed, it is best that the cat be an indoor cat. Declawed cats can still hunt and climb, but are not able to defend

themselves against other cats. If you are considering this surgery, please consult your veterinarian in order to evaluate the best course of action for your particular situation.

Skating Association of Maine announces Dean Gardner Memorial Hockey Scholarship AUGUSTA — On Jan. 20, prior to the Cony/ Hall-Dale/Monmouth boys ice hockey game against Lawrence/Skowhegan, the Rams and the Skating Association of Maine honored the late Dean Gardner, a former Cony ice hockey player and coach, who passed away Dec. 31, 2017. As part of the on-ice ceremony, the Skating Association of Maine announced a hockey scholarship in Gardner’s name that will provide financial support to local hockey players in need of equipment and funds to play the sport.

Gardner started playing hockey at age 7 and played three seasons for the Cony Rams hockey team from 1984 to 1987.

He was named the MVP his senior season, but was known more as a true teammate. He was also the head coach for Cony from 1993-94.

Prior to the start of the game, current and past Rams players were on the ice to support the Gardner family, including Gardner’s mother, Arlene Gardner. The players and family watched as a banner was hung from the upper railing in Gardner’s memory. A plaque was also provided to the Gardner family and will be displayed at the Camden Nation Bank Ice Vault lobby.

Gardner, 48, is survived by a son, Loren M. Gardner of Auburn; his mother, Arlene M. (Glazier) Gardner of Augusta; three

sisters: Diane L. Ouellette and her husband Don of Wells, Debra K. McMahon and her husband Tom of Augusta and Darlene L. St. Hilaire and her companion, Patrick Griffin, of Freeport, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Central Maine school districts share $4.6 million in DOE grants AUGUSTA — School districts in Franklin, Androscoggin, Oxford and Somerset counties were among 11 groups who will share $4.6 million in Maine Department of Education EMBRACE grants, announced Jan. 31.

The grants were awarded to school districts and other education agencies as part of the statewide regionalization initiative, the round-two EMBRACE grants prioritize Enabling Maine students to Benefit from Regional and Coordinated approaches to Education. The awardees are partnering on a regional level to improve educational opportunities for students.

Based on the funding requests, totaling $4.6 mil-

lion, the 11 awardees are projected to save over $10 million in a five-year period, the department said in a news release. A total of 19 applications were received by the Department for the Fund for the Efficient Delivery of Educational Services grant, which was made available to districts last fall.

Grant recipients included: •Western Maine Standard Analysis, which supports an audit of the programming and graduation standards across the regional members was a grant recipient. The analysis will lead to greater uniformity of standards across districts to support seamless transfer of student achievement from

school to school and collaborative staff development. The program is lead by Regional School Unit 73 (Jay, Livermore, Livermore Falls) and also includes Lisbon Public Schools, RSU 9 (Chesterville, Farmington, Industry, New Sharon, New Vineyard, Starks, Temple, Vienna, Weld, Wilton); RSU 10 (Buckfield, Hanover, Hartford, Mexico, Roxbury, Rumford, Sumner); RSU 44 (Bethel, Greenwood, Newry, Woodstock); RSU 56 (Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Peru); RSU 58 (Avon, Kingfield, Phillips, Strong); RSU 59 (Madison), RSU 74 (Anson, Embden, New Portland, Solon) and the Western Maine Educational Col-

laborative. •In Lewiston, Great Falls Regional Support for Preschoolers with Disabilities will support the transition of special education services for 3- to 5-year olds into the Lewiston School Department with full implementation

by August 2020 to ensure a successful early integration of students into district schools. The lead district was Lewiston Public School, with participants including Auburn Public Schools, RSU 16 (Mechanic Falls, Minot, Poland) and RSU 52/MSAD 52 (Green, Leeds, Turner). •In Somerset County, the Kennebec Valley Expanded STEAM Outreach Project will build on clear evidence of improved

student outcomes to support the expansion of the current STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program, which was funded through the round-one EBRACE grant. STEM-related arts will be added to the curriculum and student access will be increased.

The STEAM program will introduce middle school students to STEAM educational experiences and career pathways. The lead district was RSU 74 (Anson, Embden, New Portland, Solon), and other participants were RSU 83/MSAD 13 (Bingham, Moscow) and RSU 59/ MSAD 59 (Madison). •Also in Somerset County, the Kennebec Valley Whatever It Takes School

project will support a middle school alternative education program that aims to reduce dropout and truancy rates by providing new and improved opportunities for at- risk students with multiple pathways for achievement.

Turner Public Library announces February, March events TURNER — Turner Public Library, located on the third floor of the Leavitt Institute building, 98 Matthews Way, has announced several new events for the months of February and March, as well as a year-long reading program to help patrons meet their 2018 reading resolutions. All events are at the library.

There will be a free screening of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” — the fourth and most-recent installment of the franchise — Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. The movie is rated PG, admission is free, and popcorn and beverages will be available for modest contributions to the library.

Dungeons and Dragons games-playing will be open to all interested players, irrespective of experience, Thursday, Feb. 22 beginning at 6 p.m. Experienced D&D players will be on hand to assist novice players with the rules of the games. There is no fee to play; however, unaccompanied players under 14 years of age will require signed parent/ guardian permission.

The library’s monthly board-game night will be held Friday, March 9, beginning at 6 p.m. A variety of family-friendly table-top games are available and players are welcome to bring new games to share. Games are available for all ages from pre-

school to adult.

Two events will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Celtic culture. The library’s monthly story hour Saturday, March 10, at 10 .a.m. will include Anthony and Una Shostak playing a variety of traditional tunes. They will demonstrate the use of various instruments and share some Celtic myths, legends and fables. This event is designed for preschool through elementary-age children. Admission is free.

Harpist Danielle Paus will play a free concert at the library on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17, at 3 p.m. Paus blends traditional, sacred and original music into

modern and dynamic arrangements celebrated for their moving impact.

A classically trained musician, she has appeared on stages throughout the US and abroad. TPL will host a second concert on March 31; details will be announced.

The library will celebrate Women’s History Month with a reader’s discussion reflecting on universal themes in the lives of women — real and fictional. The library has compiled a list of books and movies to augment the discussion; participants are asked to read or view at least one of the titles before the event. Muriel Bowerman gave a history of the lap-robe project, which is coming to an end. Over the past several years, members have made lap robes for veterans, shutins, sick members and clients of Meals on Wheels.

Christine Fournier read her essay recently published in “A Living History of Western Maine” — “May Basket Days and Bean Suppahs.”

Connie Fournier and Lisa Townsend volunteered to represent the club at the state convention in May in a conserva-

tion challenge sponsored by a national organization called “Project Runway.”

Fournier and Townsend need to create a complete outfit using reusable tote bags, not plastic. Eighty percent of the outfit must be from reusable bags.

The business meeting focused on three topics — other groups in the community they could partner with, how to increase membership, and what community service projects can they pursue.

Findings will be finalized at the February meeting.

GFWC of Maine will be offering a $1,000 scholarship. Applications should be in school guidance counselors offices, but if not, those interested in applying should

visit GFWC/Maine.org to download an application. Each year GFWC of Maine offers the Maude McKenzie Scholarship, named after a former state president from Orono.

McKenzie was active in many local and state projects during her lifetime and had a special interest in the education of our youth.

Scholarships to be administed by LA Metro Chamber Foundation

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Foundation will become home to College for ME Androscoggin’s First Class Scholarship Fund.

The First Class Scholarship will be facilitated by the LA Metro Chamber Foundation to provide a “hand up” to those who want to continue their education and to those returning to college with a leap of faith but perhaps a slim budget.

The Fish Bones Hospitality Scholarship is also moving to the LA Metro Chamber Foundation, according to Paul Landry, owner of Fish Bones American Grill.

Combined, the two scholarship funds provide critical financial aid to local youth and adults pursuing post-secondary education, and a news release about the move.

For the last 11 years, College for ME has enriched the community’s college-going culture, and other entities have now come on board with that effort. There is now overwhelming support

for students, employees, and family members to acquire a post-secondary degree, and countless individuals are mentoring others to take that first step. College for ME has accomplished its goal of college becoming a multiage priority within Androscoggin County and has now closed its doors. Yet, the First Class Scholarship Fund will live on.

Hillary Verrill, immediate past president of College for ME, said, “As a highly respected organization, the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce proved to be the right partner for College for ME – Androscoggin to continue to provide the First Class Scholarship. Our Board of Directors, who have been passionate and committed to waking the college aspirations within our community for the past decade, will be able to continue to contribute by helping the LA Metro Chamber Foundation choose scholarship recipients through the College for ME – Androscoggin Scholarship Fund. Community Concepts seeks volunteer drivers LEWISTON — Community Concepts’ transportation program is in need of volunteer drivers to help those with no other means of transportation get to essential medical and other appointments.

Drivers are needed throughout the program’s service area, which includes Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties.

Drivers need to have their own vehicles and liability insurance. Drivers should have a clean driving record with no more than two moving violations on

their driving record in the past three years.

Drivers have flexible schedules and receive a reimbursement of $0.41 for all miles driven. The reimbursement is not taxable and does not interfere with other government benefits.

“We have budgeting to cover dozens more volunteer drivers, and we have people in need of rides to critical destinations,” said Kirk Bellavance, transportation program manager.

“We encourage anyone with reliable transporta-

tion, a good driving record and some extra time during the weekdays to give us a call. It’s a great way to help out your community and earn some extra money.”

Oxford Hill Chamber announces annual awards SOUTH PARIS — The board of directors for the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2018 Award Winners for Business of the Year, Rising Star of the Year, Employee of the Year and the Community Service award.

Nominations were submitted by business and community members as well as board members, said John Williams, executive director of the Oxford Hills Chamber. The board reviewed nominations and voted on them at the Jan. 16 board meeting.

The Business of the Year is Flanders Electric of Norway. Leslie Flanders, the company’s former owner, nominated the business and said, “Heath (Poland) purchased Flanders Electric from me about 11 years ago. Since that time, he has more than tripled the gross sales, has become one of Maine’s largest Generac generator dealers and is the largest electrical contractor in Oxford County.”

The Rising Star of the Year is Tilton’s Market of Buckfield. Sandra Fickett, a former school teacher, took over the business in 2014 and has increased the number of staff working at the market as well as the products offered.

Tilton’s Market is known for its butcher shop, featuring hand-cut to order meats. The market also carries an assortment of grocery items and baked goods, including homemade whoopie pies.

The Employee of the Year is Katie Letourneau of Norway Savings Bank. Letourneau manages the indirect lending at Norway Savings Bank and according to her colleague Michael Grass, she is always there for her colleagues, her company and her customers. Grass also noted that Letourneau has increased business in her department more than 52% and has taken time to mentor another lender.

She also serves on several committees in the bank and is also a board member with the Norway

ners at their restaurant as well as a free Thanksgiving dinner each year. Over the years, the Thanksgiving dinner has grown from serving nine turkeys to more than 35 turkeys.

and given back to the community. Last year’s dinner donations went to the town’s heating assistance program.
