Music for Mavis to Host “Roger and Pam”

On July 4th, the Music for Mavis summer Gazebo series will present “Roger and Pam” a well-loved duo to add a soundtrack to the happy holiday.

They will perform from 11:00 am to 1:00pm. Roger and Pam, a well-known and loved duo, frequently appearing at Poland Springs musical venue and up and down the east

coast, will charm us with thier easy harmony, rolicking saxaphone, and sweet camaraderie. They are a crowd-pleaser.

Local Woman Crowned Mrs. New England International 2015

Janet Desmarais, resident of Greene will represent New England at the Mrs. International Pageant held in Jacksonville Florida July 24, 25th. Greene Red Sox Capture Majors Championship

The Greene Red Sox captured the Majors Championship on June 20, with a score of 20-11. The Red Sox went into the playoffs as the #4 seed, defeating the #1 seed, the Greene Pirates. Coach Drew Leavitt, assisted by Brady Gates and Nate Gaudin, said the team had a great season, scoring 80 runs in last 5 games and ended with a record of 9 wins and 7 losses.

"I'm extremely proud of the boys,” Drew said, “We had an up and down season. The boys played as a team - never gave up, kept on working hard and got better. We peaked exactly when we needed to. This is something special they will always remember. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to coach this group of boys.” Team members, pictured above with coaches, included Austin Gates, Declan Giroux, Sawyer Bubier, Garrett Gaudin, Zackary Morrison, Ethan Gates, Nicholas Lahey, Noah Quinn, Asa Leavitt, Alex Tardif, Ross Wood and Daniel Bridges.

Belliveau Joins Staff of Turner Veterinary Service Andrine Belliveau, DVM, has joined the staff of Turner Veterinary Service.

Dr. Belliveau grew up in Bolton, Massachusetts.

She fostered her interest for animals early on in life, growing up on her small family farm. She was active in breeding and showing Nigerian Dwarf goats and Cheviot sheep.

Dr. Belliveau attended Cornell University and received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. She was then accepted to the Cummings School of Vet-

To earn a spot on the Dean's List, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for a 16-credit semester.

Taylor Benson of Leeds was recently named to the Castleton College Dean’s List for the spring semester of the 2014-15 academic year.

To qualify for this academic honor, the student must maintain full-time status and a semester grade point average of 3.5.

The Williston Northampton School announces that Margaret Cummings of North Monmouth, who is a member of the Class of 2015, achieved Honors.

Students earning Honors are required to earn a grade point average of 87.

The University of Hartford is pleased to announce Alicia Rowe of Livermore Falls has been named to its Dean’s List for Spring 2015.

Melissa L. Hancock of Turner graduated from Western New England University with a Juris Doctor

Samantha J. Jones of Buckfield was named to the Dean’s List at Colby College in Waterville for her outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 201415 year. The Dean’s List at Colby is highly selective, this spring reserved for students with a semester grade point average of 3.76 or higher.

Hebron native Meghan Feely, a member of the Class of 2017, was named to the Spring 2015 Dean’s List at Stonehill College.

To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must have a semester grade point average of 3.50 or better and must have completed successfully all courses for which they were registered.

Hello again, dear readers. What a busy few weeks this has been! I’ve added two more post offices to my repertoire, making that eight in three years, and the list continues to grow. You’re liable to find me filling in just about anywhere these days.

As some of you know, the counter hours at the Leeds post office have changed once again: M-F 7-11, 12-2; S 9-11. The lobby is locked at 2 p.m. but the pickup from the outside collection box remains at 3:45. The Wayne post office suffered the same weekday fate, but S is 7:30-10 and the lobby is open 24/7. Glad to meet many of you in Greene and to learn that you follow The Leeds Line!

We are fortunate to live in an area of beauti-

ful lakes, including one right in our own town – Androscoggin Lake. The lake association ALIC takes care of water quality monitoring, testing for phosphorus levels, dissolved oxygen, clarity, and eColi. It also has a team of “plant patrollers” who regularly survey the aquatic plants, checking for invasives – none at this time!

In addition, it assists in the maintenance of the Dead River dam, participates in the annual loon count with Maine Audubon, and engages with 30 Mile River Watershed Association in erosion control efforts and courtesy boat inspections.

A reminder that the town beach is for use by Leeds residents only and their accompanied guests. This does not include dogs, per Town ordinance which is posted above the gate.

Please leave your pet at home. Also, it seems there are some excessivelyrowdy teenagers bouncing the float and disrespecting others’ use of the beach area. This will not be tolerated. A lot of work over the years – including many hours by yours truly – went into transforming the beach into a safe, clean, family-friendly place for wholesome recreation.

Let’s preserve that environment. Please note that, starting July 1, the gate will be locked at 9 p.m. and unlocked at 6 a.m.

Also on Saturday morning, July 18, the lake association ALIC will be hosting a table at the Wayne Farmers’ Market to continue its efforts to “Get the Lead Out” of our lakes.

Bring over your lead sinkers and jigs and exchange them, free of charge, for new unleaded tackle. The association is collaborating with Maine Audubon this summer in its Fish Lead Free initiative and hopes to fill a large jar with lead items, which often wind up in the gizzards of loons, leading to a debilitating death.

200th John McDonald

In less than five years, we, the 1.3 million citizens of Maine, will be celebrating our state’s 200th birthday. I know the date sounds a long way off but take my word: it’ll be here before we know it.

Knowing my fellow Mainers, I assume most, when they finally get down to business, will want to find some way to cash-in on such a big event and make a lot of money. And who could blame them? I can see special 200th Anniversary Yard Sales featuring items that look like they’ve been kicking around for at least two centuries.

It’ll also be a great time for carpenters who can turn out all kinds souvenirs for tourists who will scoop them up as fast as they’re made.

One problem with our state’s birthday is that it will occur – as it has for 200 years - right in the middle of March – the most useless and least favorite string of thirty days on the calendar. March is so useless and unpopular that it was chosen, with-

out discussion, as the month to hold our town meetings, which are also useless and unpopular.

Maine is the most northeasterly state of the 50 United States, which isn’t a major Tourist draw but it’s something. And people who get a certain thrill out of being in a state that is – at once the most north, while at the same time being the

no idea who “they” are but they’re always saying things like that and they’re probably right some of the time.

Many not familiar with Maine history will want to know how Maine became a District of Massachusetts in the first place.

From what I understand during the English civil war King Charles II and his ministers were a little busy with things like staying alive and pretty much ignored their colonies.

Massachusetts took advantage of that distraction and eventually purchased all claims to Maine. If King James II had remained king of England things would have been different. But James was thrown out and his successors, William and Mary , in 1691, granted a new charter to Massachusetts that confirmed its title to Maine.

Maybe during our 200th birthday some scholar, after years of tedious research, will finally discover why our state is called Maine in the first place. There are plenty of guesses but even at this late date no one knows for sure. Some say our state is named for a former province in France, others argue Maine is named for an island in the Orkney Island off Scotland. No one knows for sure.

So, we should all start planning now because like, I said, our state’s 200th will be here before we know it.n

Deer: The Habitat Puzzle release the lingering seriousness of Maine’s deer population numbers is apparent. “For 2015, the Department is recommending a total of 28,700 Anydeer permits. This is a decrease of 23 percent from 2014. In 2013, there was a 20 percent cutback in Anydeer permits.

Consecutive harsh winters have taken its toll on Maine’s deer, of that there is no doubt. Even wildlife managers can’t control the weather. Other deer population variables can be managed, however: predation and habitat, to name two. Strides have been made by sportsmen and state-sanctioned predator control personnel to reduce coyote numbers.

Predation by bears is another matter.

Habitat seems to be the elusive but critical variable that must be the

This number is a far cry from the deer harvests of earlier times. It’s a slight improvement, however, and the Fish and Wildlife Department, understandably, made the best of a bad situation with a positive headline: “Deer Harvest Second Highest in the Past Six Years.”

For years, the Land Use Regulation Commission zoned some deer wintering areas against commercial foresting. Along the way, the Fish and Wildlife Department tried the “carrot approach” and sought to forge cooperative deer yard protection agreements with wildland owners.

As an interested observer it has frankly been difficult to get a fix from public officials on just how effective these cooperative agreements have been. A recent in depth study by the University of Maine wildlife ecology department is not that encouraging about how we manage deer and deer wintering areas.

The study is titled “Effectiveness of State Regulations to Protect Deer

Wintering Habitats in Maine: Did the Designation of LURC-zoned Deeryards Achieve Desired Objectives during the Period 1975-2007?”

UMO professor Dan Harrison was the principal investigator. Boiled down, the study asserts that more than 30 years of zoning of deer yards has not worked.

It further maintains, surprisingly, that the expansion of zoned deer yards will be a financial burden on timberland owners with negligible return in deer yard protection or deer survival numbers.

The study appears to be saying as well that the state’s deer management objectives and goals have been out of step with the realities of commercially managed forestlands.

Looking to the future, the study states that: “Given that zoning of a

small part of the landscape was ineffective for meeting population-level habitat objectives for deer in Maine, other collaborative landscape conservation approaches will likely be needed to couple forestry and wildlife habitat objectives on managed forests in the region.

As you might guess, this report - which has not had much media scrutiny that I know of - raises as

many questions as it answers. When I asked wildlife managers in Augusta to react to this somewhat controversial study, I was told that other priorities have been in play, and so far there has not been the staff or the time to assess the study, or weigh its findings against contemporary deer management goals.

Bear Pond Community Fun Day

Bear Pond Community Fun Day, sponsored by the Bear Pond Improvement Association (BPIA), will be held on July 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event will be held in the boat launch area at 65 Berry Road. BPIA invites and encourages all Big Bear and Little Bear cottage/ property owners, their families, and guests to come for a day of fun and education, whether a member of BPIA or not.

Pontoon boat rides will be available to attendees, providing a wonderful opportunity to get a close up view of our pristine pond and its beautiful shoreline. At-

tendees planning to enjoy a boat ride will need to provide life jackets.

Games and activities are planned throughout the day.

Lunch will be provided free to all attendees from 11:30am to 1:00pm.

Also new this year will be a “no cost to enter” raffle for property owners on the pond.

Property owners just need to submit a completed form with updated email address, telephone number(s), pond address, and mailing address to enter the drawing for a $50 gift card to Northland True Value.

While the Association encourages all property

owners to join BPIA, membership is not required to enter the raffle.

Forms will be available for completion at Fun Day with the drawing to be held at BPIA’s July meeting scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on July 26th at BQMC in North Turner.

The information collected from this activity will help BPIA update its mailing and email lists, thus increasing efficiency and accuracy in getting information (i.e. newsletters) to everyone along the shore, while at the same time, decreasing mailing expenses through the use of email and correcting outdated information. The winner does not need to be present at BPIA’s July meeting. Notification of the winner will be made via

email if possible. And finally, in an effort to save our present members and new members the cost of postage, BPIA’s annual dues of $25.00 can be paid at Fun Day! Two other special fun events are planned to coincide with the Bear Pond Community Fun Day. A two-day fishing derby for youth ages 15 years and younger will be held all day Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, until 11:00 a.m. on Big and Little Bear Pond. Bring your catch to the camp of Kent Mitchell, 41 Jones Road, Little Bear (207778-1445) for measurement and a photo. Trophies will be awarded at Fun Day. Catch and release is encouraged, if

possible.

Raised Doughnuts • 1/2 Cup warm (not hot) water • 2 Pkg active dry yeast (if yeast cakes 2 is used) • 3/4 cup lukewarm milk • 1/4 Cup sugar • 1 Tsp salt • 4 to 4 1/2 Cups sifted all-purpose flour • 1/3 Cup Shortening • 2 Eggs 1. SOAK Yeast in 1/2 cup warm (not hot) water for 5 minutes 2. Pour milk over sugar and salt in a bowl stir until dissolved.

3. Add 1 cup of flour, shortening, eggs and yeast mixture 4. Add remaining flour to make soft dough.

5. When dough leaves sides of bowl, turn out onto lightly floured board.

6. Knead until dough becomes smooth and elastic.

7. Place in lightly greased bowl. Grease top of dough and cover with wax paper.

8. Allow to rise in warm place, 80-85 degrees, until doubled. 1-1 1/2 hours.

9. Roll out dough in 1/3 inch thickness and cut with a floured doughnut cutter.

10. Remove centers. Let rise on a flat area until they rise again. 30-40 minutes 11. Drop into hot fat (385°) and turn when doughnuts rise to surface.

12. Turn once again when browned sufficiently. 3-4 minutes total cooking time.

13. Drain on absorbent paper. While still warm glaze with mixture of 1-2 tbsp warm

water 1/2 Tsp vanilla and 1 cup sifted confection sugar. Or dust each doughnut

with granulated sugar or confection sugar. Yields 2 to 2 1/2 dozen.

worked for Bath Iron Works for 35 years. He loved his Bath family. He also worked a few different jobs, pruning trees, packing apples and was a carpenter. He enjoyed working on the farm, taking rides, assembling models, reading, watching Old Western movies and launching rockets and fireworks with his family and friends. David loved antiques and could never pass up a yard sale or a tent sale. He could see the beauty in things others may pass.

The world has lost one of the kindest, gentlest souls. He was the sweetest man anyone could ever know, and would give you the shirt off his back. He was a friend to everyone and had no enemies any-

ing for her family and home. Over the years she also worked in several different places, BIW shipyard during WWII, shoe shops, retail, and paper mills. She was a communicant of Saint Rose of Lima in Jay and former member of the Daughters of Isabella.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, leather tooling, card and board games. With her husband Robert, she enjoyed square and round dancing, skiing, bowling, hiking and fishing.

She especially enjoyed summer weekends with family at Cozy Cove on Round Pond.

She was always happy to provide her highly acclaimed chocolate cake for family gatherings, she lived to love and feed her immediate and extended family. With her husband Noel, she enjoyed extensive travel throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Yvette B. Hatch Maillett, 90, a former resident of Livermore, passed away Wednesday, June 17th at her home at Park Residences in Waterville.

She was surrounded with love, by friends and family. She was born June 12, 1925 in Jay, the daughter of Joseph Therrien and Laura (Guerin) Therrien.

Yvette attended school in Jay. She was married to Robert H. Hatch from 1945 – 1986 and they had 3 children. Robert passed away in 1986. She and Robert were long time residents of Rumford.

They were both active in the Mechanics Institute and skiing communities.

She was also married to Noel Maillett, from 1989 – 2005. He passed away in 2005. She was a devoted wife and mother, and took great pride car-

We are so not done, people! It’s too easy for us to get caught in a rut, closing off our minds and hearts to such wonderful new learning that is available to us every single day.

Join the Canton Park and Trail Committee, Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Maine Forest Service on Friday morning, July 24th to enjoy a walk along the Whitney Brook Trail while learning how to identify trees and invasive plant species and about the basics of woodlot management.

The informal event will start at 9A.M. at the Canton Heritage Park (Rt. 108, West of the intersection with Rt. 140) and will

proceed along the trail at a leisurely pace giving ample opportunity to ask questions and have them answered before ending by 12P.M. Constructed in 2008, the 1.7-­mile main trail is easy walking through a mixed successional floodplain forest, fields and forested wetland. With numerous tree species, a vernal pool and unfortunately plenty of invasive plant examples, it provides a fine educational and recreational area.

Merle Ring, the Maine

Forest Service District Forester for Oxford County, will lead the discussion on tree identification and woodlot management.

Michele Windsor, Project Manager at Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District will talk about the invasive plant species found in the park and along the trail and methods that may be used to control them.

A representative of the Canton Park and Trail Committee will describe how the trail was devel-

oped and efforts to maintain it.

Defending Unemployment Claims: Part II Sumbitted by Rebecca Webber This article is part two of guidance on unemployment claims. Anyone who would like copies of the materials from chief hearings officer Wyman from the June 16 CMHRA meeting, just email Rebecca Webber and ask for a copy.

Tips for defending a claim on your own: In the first step of the claims process, which is just on the phone with each side separately, take the time to present a summary of the facts to the deputy in the local office regarding the employee's voluntary quit or termination and its reasons if the employee was fired. Many claimants will not bother to appeal if they lose at this stage.

You should fax or email materials in such as warnings, write-ups, or other documents explaining what happened.

If the party who loses appeals, the case is retried from scratch and no weight is given to the deputy's decision. If either party wants to be certain that particular witnesses will attend the hearing, they can request the Commission in advance to issue a subpoena.

The hearings used to take place in a small room at the local office or some other neutral location. Nowadays most hearings are by phone. The hearing officer will begin the hearing by turning on the tape recorder and providing some preliminary instructions. At this stage of the

proceedings, everyone is permitted to be present in the hearing room. After the introductory remarks, all persons who are going to testify except the first witness, the claimant, and the employer's representative will be asked to wait in another location until called to testify.

This is all done so that testimony of early witnesses will not influence later ones. The hearing officer may ask questions at any time. Employers should listen carefully to these questions because they may provide clues as to the issues the hearing officer considers important. Any question asked by the hearing officer is an important one -that should be your mantra.

If the case involves a voluntary quit, the claimant will be asked to present his or her case first. The hearing officer will not treat a voluntary decision to leave as disqualifying if the claimant can show that their work life was made miserable by conditions that the employer knew about but failed to fix. The claimant may also be awarded unemployment benefits if he or she can demonstrate some serious unfairness in the work relationship such as a broken promise to provide certain benefits. Do not assume that all you need to do is show that the employee quit.

In addition, testimony about workplace conditions may well relate to conditions relevant in a discrimination claim so make sure you are prepared and con-

sistent.

Once the claimant's first witness has testified, the employer will be permitted to cross examine. All too often, the employer, instead of asking questions, will try to make a statement contradicting the claimant's witness. The hearing officer will then advise the employer that it will have an opportunity later to make a statement, but, at that point in the proceeding, it is limited to cross examination. It IS ok, and advisable, to ask questions in the form of statements and avoid open ended questions that allow the witness to go on and on. For example, “You came to work on Monday but were out Tuesday and Wednesday, right?”

“You did not call anyone to let them know you weren’t coming in, did you?” “Your manager called and emailed you but you did not respond, isn’t that correct.” As much as possible, keep the cross examination limited to yes or no answers.

After one side has presented all of its witnesses, the procedure is repeated with the witnesses from the other side. If the employer has documents to present, it is helpful to offer them through a witness who is familiar with them and can testify as to their origin and what their significance is. If the document is merely a statement by a person who is not present, the hearing officer may be reluctant to admit it into evidence because it is "hearsay." There is a

preference for and bias in favor of live testimony. Thus, important testimony should be given in person if possible and not by means of a written statement, even if the statement is given under oath or is notarized. The rules of evidence technically do not apply but the issue will be whether the evidence is the kind typically relied upon by reasonable people. Many times a hearing officer will allow a witness to be called on the phone to be patched into the hearing.

If the claimant has been fired, the employer will go first and will be expected to offer proof that the claimant was guilty of insubordination or other conduct that seriously undermined the employer's interests. If possible, evidence should be produced that the former employee had previously been guilty of the same misconduct and warned that a repetition could result in firing. The question is whether the employee violated clearly stated rules. Make sure to have proof that the employee was informed of the rules and then warned to follow the rules.

The focus will be on the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”

If the employee kept violating the same rule over and over but is then fired for something minor and unrelated, maybe because the manager has just had enough, the employer could lose the hearing if the termination decision happened because of that minor incident. Document the communication of the

rules; document discussions with the employee; document all warnings; provide those documents by email or fax to the DOL. After both sides have presented their witnesses, the party who went first will be given an opportunity for rebuttal. The hearing officer will try to limit the rebuttal evidence to matters that respond to something that the other side presented.

Although there are no hard and fast rules, the hearing officer is authorized to exclude new evidence that does not rebut something that has been presented by the opposing side. Make sure to point out how you are responding to something the other side raised.

At the conclusion of the hearing, each side may be able to summarize its position in closing argument. Use your judgment on whether to insist. The hearing officer will mail a written decision to the parties usually within one to three weeks after the hearing.

American Legion Post #204 Flag Day Ceremony

In honor of Flag Day 2015, American Legion Post #204, Monmouth Maine had our Flag Retirement Ceremony this Morning at the Transfer

damaged and unusable flags were respectfully destroyed by burning per Legion protocol and several with only minor irregularities were salvaged

for issue to anyone who would like to fly the flag but might not be able to afford a new one, or offered in exchange to those who are flying a badly

Retired American Flags should never be discarded with household trash; there is a special receptacle at the base of

Fairs and Festivals Around the Country

By Victor Block In Gilroy, California, people line up to purchase watermelon, ice cream and chocolate, all of which are laced with fresh, pungent garlic. Underwater divers off Florida’s Looe Key are serenaded by sounds ranging from a song sung by the Beatles to the high-pitched call made by humpback whales.

These disparate scenes have one thing in common.

They’re three of countless fairs and festivals that are held throughout the year and around the country which focus on and celebrate a variety of animals and art, food and fun and other themes.

Take that crowd of garlic lovers. For 35 years, the Gilroy Garlic Festival has been one of the largest gatherings of foodies in the United States.

Like most fairs based on a theme, this one includes its share of entertainment, music, arts and crafts and other attractions. And like many, it raises money that is donated to charities and non-profit organizations.

The festival provides an opportunity for those who attend to indulge in their love of garlic and their belief that it is under-used in recipes. Along with opportunities to nosh on the tasty treats, there are competitions for professional chefs, and a Great Garlic Cook-Off contest for amateurs. Food, sort of, also is the focus of the somewhat grossly named Roadkill Cook-Off in Marlinton, West Virginia. Where else would you be asked how you prefer deer sausage, squirrel gravy over biscuits or teriyaki-marinated bear prepared? The entrees haven't actually been killed on a road but they’re on the menu as a tribute to the large number of their cousins who were. For more information log onto pccocwv.com/roadkill.

One guess what the feature attraction is at the annual Great Texas Mosquito Festival in the town of Clute, about a 45-minute drive from Houston.

If none of these fun festivals has appeal for you, fret not. An Internet search will reveal a virtual a-to-z list of alternatives, including a Bigfoot festival, National Hollerin' Contest, kinetic sculpture race and events that honor chickens, lentils, tarantulas, turpentine, dancing and much more.

The schedule of activities at most festivals includes music of some kind, and there are others at which dulcet sounds are a, if not the, major attraction.

Those divers and snorkelers off the Florida coast are participants in the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival. Each year, hundreds of people don masks, flippers and other paraphernalia and swim over magnificent coral reefs in the National Maritime Sanctuary as music and other sounds waft down from above.

The sea-focused playlist includes melodies like the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” and the theme from “The Little Mermaid.”

Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate costumes, and some pretend to play whimsical underwater instruments made by a local sculptor.

There's also a long list of events that don’t fit easily into categories. In 1947, an object crashed at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico that the Air Force ever since has insisted was a weather surveillance balloon. Even so, a persistent group of people have clung to the belief that the accident involved an extraterrestrial spaceship, whose occupants were recovered by the military which has engaged in a cover-up.

For years, the area has been the go-to destination for those who cling to the belief that our planet has been visited by aliens.

Among activities are a costume contest, “alien chase,” and presentations by authors of adult and
