GREENE — Japan Karate Association’s Maine Karate Academy opened its Karate Dojo school on Route 202 just about a year ago. In a unique achievement for such a new school, a team of seven qualified for the world championships in Limerick, Ireland, Aug. 17. With the championships now allowing competition in several age/level divisions, the team from Greene will send students ages 11 to 19, in addition to JKA instructor Sensei Khim Torres, who will be competing as a fifth degree black belt. With the exception of Torres, the team members are local school students from Greene, Lewiston and Lisbon. Team members heading to Ireland are Rosh Torres, 19, (second degree black belt), Michael Umayam, 16, (first degree black belt); Yuki Torres, 15, (first degree black belt); Benjamin Farris, 14, (first degree brown belt); Ariana Touchette-Ruiz, 12, (first degree brown belt); Mikaella Torres, 11, (first degree brown belt). Also going on the championship trip to Ireland is school owner Ferdie Torres, who was selected as a U.S. team coach. Ferdie Torres opened JKA Dojo in July 2016. He is a sixth degree black belt in Okinawa kenpo karate and kobudo and has been ranked internationally in kumite and kata (sparring — formal karate moves and techniques). He is also a third degree black belt in

Shokotan karate, the style taught at JKA Maine. Ferdie and Khim Torres are cousins, originally from the Philippines. Khim Torres moved to Maine from California last year to be his cousin’s head instructor at the new JKA of Maine. He has competed in the Funakoshi Gichin Cup World Karate-do Championship and other international events. The younger members of the team are excited about their first international trip to Ireland. Several of them have traveled in the states and Canada for competition, but this will be the first time overseas. In addition to the excitement, they said they feel a little nervousness about getting onto the competition floor with “the Japanese and the Russians.” The Japanese are generally the toughest competitors, with the Russians occasionally earning the top placements. The discipline and commitment the students have made to their training, and the advice they are given by Ferdie Torres, has lowered any anxieties they have about their Japanese or Russian opponents. He repeats to the youngsters, “You are going to Ireland with intentions to win and enjoy the journey.” Also, in his gentle admonitions, are inspired moments. “We’re not trying to be good enough,” he said. “We want to think excellence.” His special quote, “Don’t let the math beat you,” advises the students not to have their opponent’s skill or na-

a-week schedule. To break things up, the Torres family strives to create a sense of family within the school environment. They have held a “Kids Night Out” that included some advice for the students and families on preventing bullying, a pizza party and a movie. There was also a night where the students demonstrated their skills for their families. Parents have been involved in the fundraising activities to pay for the Ireland trip, do-

ing things like car washes and selling whoopie pies. The competitive road to qualify for the world championships has included winning several awards in Boston (team trials) and New Orleans (2016 JKA/ AF national tournament). JKA/Maine had the honor in May to hold the first Traditional Karate Tournament at the school. Another

highlight for the school was being visited by two worldclass instructors — Rikiya Iimura from Japan and Tony Nakamura, a national team member, who teaches at the oldest authentic JKA Shotokan Karate dojo in Chicago. Other visiting instructors hailed from six other states, Canada, and locally from Rome and Auburn.n
