Auburn police officers come into contact with traumatized children each and every day. These kids may be accident victims or crime victims, witnesses to a crime or traumatic event, even lost, sick or injured.

Quite often, they are witnesses to domestic vio-

lence.

Thanks to the generosity of community partners like FISC Solutions, Auburn officers now have a fresh supply of soft, cuddly stuffed animals to give out to a hurting child.

On February 7th, the Auburn Sewer District will be repairing a 12” sanitary sewer line at 5 Washington St North (near Roys). Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. n

Auburn Police Department yielded a phenomenal response from staff at FISC Solutions in Lewiston.

FISC employees donated more than 100 new stuffed animals that police officers will distribute to children in the community to help ease their pain or fear.

“We really appreciate such generosity,” said Chief Phil Crowell. “A simple gift like a stuffed animal can help our officers remind a child in distress that they are safe and that the police can protect them from harm.” n

Auburn’s Dunn Qualifies for NAIA Track and Field Nationals

Auburn’s Abby Dunn, a 2012 Edward Little graduate, competed in her first NAIA collegiate indoor track and field 3k race walk event at Findlay University in Findlay, Ohio on Friday, January 25th. Dunn, competing as a freshman for Goshen College in Indiana, placed first among collegiate athletes and second overall with a time of 15:32.02. This time qualifies her for NAIA indoor nationals being held in Geneva, Ohio in March. It also qualifies her for USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in June in Des Moines, Iowa.

Lights for Linda

Linda was diagnosed with GBM (Glioblastoma Multiforme) on October 31st, 2012. We were all devastated when her oncologist told us there was no cure for this disease, just the hope of chemotherapy to decrease the size of the tumor, and pray it doesn’t continue to grow.

Treatment is expensive.

We are hosting this event in an effort to help minimize the financial stressors that this type of condition can cause.

Bike Auction Nets $13,260 for Dempsey Center

A Specialized Custom Roll 8 Rare bicycle fetched $4,420 in an online auction hosted by the Dempsey Challenge in late December. The bike was donated by Specialized Bicycles, a Dempsey Challenge sponsor since the event’s inception in 2009. Stephen Forney of Albuquerque, New Mexico had his bid matched by Specialized and Bicycling Magazine for a grand donation total of $13,260.

“Specialized could not be more honored to be a part of such a great project,” said Mike Sinyard, found and CEO of Specialized Bicycles. “The work done by Patrick and the whole team at the Dempsey Center is very powerful in that it changes lives for the better every single day.”

The Dempsey Challenge serves as the primary fundraiser for the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing which provides free support and education to anyone impacted by cancer. The 5th annual Dempsey Challenge will take place Oct. 12-13 in Dempsey’s hometown Lewiston, ME. The event features a 5K and 10K run/ walk on Saturday, October 12th and cycling rides of 10, 25, 50, 70 and 100 miles the following day. The 2012 event attracted 4,294 participants from 33 states and six countries and raised $1.2 million to benefit the Dempsey Center.

Ten high school sophomores and juniors have an extraordinary opportunity to spend eight nights immersed in the finest example of wild country in Maine. In Baxter State Park, they share in an experience that is becoming rare. This wilderness education program sets in motion a journey that will last a lifetime. Beyond the amazing personal experience, the participants also learn a very important message to share in their schools and communities: wilderness preservation is an essential value for humans as well as for all other species that rely upon this land.

Accompanied by experienced wilderness leaders from the Chewonki Foundation, participants work with a variety of specialists as they backpack from one end of Baxter State Park to the other, camping at different sites, including

three nights in the backcountry at Russell Pond.

Understanding the wilderness through science, art, storytelling, photography, writing, history, and recreation instills an appreciation of the wild lands of Baxter State Park. This is a journey the participants will never forget.

Slow Economy Encourages Cooperation in L/A Councils

Keeping Maine’s urban centers operating at an acceptable level has been a difficult task for some time now. The nation’s economic downturn, with its cutbacks in state and federal funds, has made the goals of attracting new business development, keeping present business here and maintaining the necessary infrastructure, very challenging for city administrations and councils.

One way the twin cities of Lewiston and Auburn have tried to deal with new budgetary restraints is through cooperation between the two City Councils and the various business and social organizations in the area bordering the Androscoggin River. Major players among those organizations mentioned at this year’s first joint council meeting (01/28) were the Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council (LAEGC), Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments and the Chamber of Commerce.

Discussion during the two-hour session also raised the necessity for each city’s Budget Committee to “be on the same page” when considering their funding of those services that will be shared by both municipalities. Several council

members from both sides of the river shared that all the councilors and the interested, community residents and business owners should be made aware of what is transpiring in the various groups of professionals doing the footwork.

Auburn Councilor at Large, Josh Shea, noting how “our backs are against the wall” [from state funding cuts] asked, “How can we be creative in delivering joint services?” Later in the meeting, after listening to some cautions about having a ‘Shared Downtown Manager’, he said he favored the idea. “We need to do something. Maybe the LAEGC can’t be restructured to have this shared manager, but it’s a good first step.”

It was understood by all present from both cities that no ideas or proposals are set in stone, and that both councils have the ultimate authority to accept or reject any joint proposals. It was also noted that timing could be a real issue. If Governor LePage has his current budget proposal passed by the Legislature, it may not happen until after the Twin Cities have already passed their budgets. This eventuality could cause some difficulties, coming back to the tables to rework the local budgets.

The idea of a Shared or Joint City Manager/Facilitator was put forward by Mayors Edward Barrett (LEW) and Clinton Deschene. They had previously hashed over the idea with the L/A Economic Growth Council. It was agreed that the Mayors would take back the tentative ‘okay’, to the LAEGC and have them work out the “specifics” as to how they could fund the Shared Manager position and what its job description would be.

At meetings end it was suggested that the two councils might meet more frequently, possibly every fifth-week month. Mayor Edward Macdonald and Auburn Ward 1 Councilor Tizz Crowley hoped that in future meetings the topic of Education could be tackled. n

YWCA Offers Swim Classes The YWCA has a full schedule of swim lessons which are available mornings, afternoons, evenings and Saturday mornings.

Auburn Public Library Opens Digital Media Lab

An $8,000 check from Best Buy Children’s Foundation to support a 10-part series of educational and equipment workshops for teenagers is presented to Auburn Public Library officials in support of the new digital media lab.

Providing a hands-on learning experience utilizing the latest technological tools available, representatives from the Auburn Public Library officially welcomed cardholders and the public to experience the new, state-of-the-art digital media center, the first digital media lab to be located within a public library in New England.

Aptly designated as the Create! Media Lab, the digital studio is avail-

able for Auburn Public Library and Lewiston Public Library cardholders. Equipped with three Apple Mac computers that feature iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand and Audacity software, the lab also features a digital scanner, video camera, still camera, electronic keyboard, two microphones, studio lights, headphones, and multiple guitar input jacks for connecting electric guitars or acoustic pickups.

Users will be able to create music, produce podcasts, design ads, manipulate digital images, scan photos and documents, generate movies, and edit existing work. Users will also be able to take old analog (VHS) home movies and digitize them.

Located on the second floor of the Auburn Public Library, the digital media lab is designed to hold up to six individuals and will be available to those of high school age or older.

“As digital media and technology continue open up new opportunities, having the ability to access these resources will be of great assistance to our creative community,” said Jim Wilkins, director of development for the library. “I think we will look back on this lab as an invaluable small business and community asset because of the tools provided here.”

Many businesses strive to employ the best, they instinctively give credit to the companies success to their employees and honor their employees with incentives and professional development while other businesses struggle with continuous turnover. Im sure we all have had jobs at both ends of these spectrums. I worked at a local bank for close to 15 years and often thought I could do this for free. I LOVED the customers and leading the team to victories. It became my passion.

Employees, truly, are seeking workplace stability, assurance that the employer is hiring like minded employees that care, but last a majority of employees come to work because they enjoy the customer base of the company.

So how do we keep these Hidden Gems as “Lifers” at our company? How do we retain quality employees?

The answer, Im sure, can be discussed, challenged and maybe even disputed. The answer is simple. We must HOARD good people, care about what they do and thank them. This is a good ol fashion dose of employee appreciation. Employees that love what they do are the type of employees our customers enjoy working with. These employees have passion for people and making it happen.

The ones that come to work with determination and drive.

As I look around my community, I can immediately locate the hidden gems in my daily errands. Without knowing a thing about their performance reviews, their pay and without knowing any internal matters, the hidden gem employee goes to the little man who wipes down my car after a car wash at Yvon’s Car Wash. Always a smile and a nod letting me know that he loves his job.

Having lunch with my husband at Simones Hot dogs guarantees me an employee named “Shelly” who makes it a point to know what I want and makes it a point to know our names. As though Im the only customer in a room of hungry customers. I LOVE hidden gems.

In my banking days we had hidden gems all over but customers adored the little 2 ladies at the switchboard.

The face and the voice of the company welcomed more then a customer. It welcomed them to come back.

In order to hire the best, you have to be the best. So as the employer, take a look around the company and couple your best with those who want to be the best and watch them grow. Know that your employees may be better then you and THAT is exactly what you want because in order to build something great you must have a great foundation. But always remember that people don’t leave companies they leave people.

“I think for both the teenage crowd and residents of Auburn, Lewiston and Minot, this new lab opens a window to explore a potential career in digital media,” said Wilkins. “It provides people with the ability to learn and create media in all its forms without having to purchase the high-end, expensive equipment required in today’s digital world.”

Student Kyle Coffill of Edward Little High School has been utilizing the lab since it opened last October. “The lab gives us a chance to make our own music and be creative,” said Coffill. “But being able to create and edit YouTube videos and movies is awesome. I love the media lab.”

Although classes and workshops designed to educate the public on how to effectively use the media lab have already started, future workshops will continue to be provided.

“We have reached out to area professionals who might be interested in lead-

ing workshops in photography, film, music making, and graphic design,” said lab coordinator Donna Wallace. “These are skills our teens will be able to use now, and we hope, may even start them thinking about their future. To date, we have had workshops on iPhoto and Audacity, and are looking forward to future workshops on iMovie, Keynote, and photography to name a few. We are excited to see the digital creations that will come from this lab.”

The lab is recommended for those who have a basic knowledge of the software or are willing to learn on their own, however librarians will be available to answer questions and assist with basic set-up.

“The Create! Media Lab is a groundbreaking public library service for the people of this community,” said Jonathan LaBonte, Mayor for the City of Auburn.

“This lab demonstrates that the Auburn Public Library is at the leading edge in the evolution of communitybased education spaces in Maine and gives users an opportunity not to just use content created by others, but to actually create their own material for personal or professional ambitions.

Historical Society to Hold Genealogy Workshop

The Androscoggin Historical Society will conduct a workshop for people interested in tracing their family roots on Saturday, February 16th at 1 p.m. at the Auburn Public Library Community Room.

This is the newest of the Society’s popular workshops, which are intended to help genealogy enthusiasts.

The workshop leaders will be John Henderson, who will discuss resources available at the Auburn library’s local history room,

and Beverly Robbins, who will discuss tracing Revolutionary War ancestors. Both are members of the AHS board of directors.

Henderson has researched and published a genealogical line, which led to researching, writing, and publishing a book of six biographies, which in turn led to researching, writing, and publishing a community history. He volunteers at the library’s local history room.

Robbins is regent of the Mary Dillingham Chap-

ter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She will be accompanied

by Willoughby Wight and Mary Jane Densmore, both longtime DAR members and officers of the chapter who have spent years researching Revolutionary War soldiers.

The public is invited to the presentation. There will be no charge for admission, although donations will be accepted.

Robert D. Turcotte Award Presented for the Promotion of Home Health Care

Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice presented the Robert D. Turcotte Award to four individuals at the spring Volunteer Recognition events held in Auburn, Farmington and S. Paris. The award is presented in honor of Robert Turcotte, an Auburn resident, who was treasurer of the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice’s Board of Directors from 1978 until his death in 1982.

Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice gives this award in acknowledgement of outstanding contributions to the promotion of home health care.

The 2012 award recipients are: • Ann Dehetre-Arsenault, of Lewiston, a Hospice House greeter and special events volunteer.

Ann first became involved with the agency several years ago through her former employer, bringing the Hospice Foundation of America’s annual educational teleconference to the

Lewiston/Auburn area and worked with the bereavement department staff to sponsor the Survivors of Suicide teleconference. In early 2011, Ann joined the planning committees of all our major events (HH 5K and Remembrance Walk, Butterfly Release Celebration and Autumn Night Out), where she quickly took on leadership roles.

This spring, Ann took the lead in organizing the Indoor Deck Party which raised more than $2,700 towards the new Hospice House sun deck.

Ann’s commitment was strengthened this past year by her personal experience at the Hospice House. She now volunteers twice a month at the Hospice House as a greeter, taking on the hard to fill Saturday night shift. In a very short time, Ann has proven to be a great asset. Her experience, creativity and leadership will help Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice grow their special events in the

Peter then worked with Andrea LeBlanc, Chief Operating Officer of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, on creating a video of our Agency’s history for the roll-out of the M.O.D.E.L. Care project.

The video included staff sharing their thoughts and memories as well as a slide show of historical and present pictures. Peter truly captured a cross section of

Ten years ago, Michelle and her family were participants in the Program for Grieving Children and Teens. In 2011, she became a trained volunteer for the program. Michelle displays a deep compassion for both children and adults coping with loss. She brings her personal experience and growth to the groups she facilitates. Michelle has volunteered with groups

in Auburn and Wilton and has stepped up to help with family intakes volunteering as many as three days per week as well as traveling as much as 250 miles.

One of the groups Michelle facilitated was particularly challenging as some of the children had Asperger’s syndrome and ADHD. Yet, she somehow found ways to include them all, create a safe and accepting environment, and promote their healing. Michelle exemplifies the heart of the Program for Grieving Children and Teens.

Sandy has made special connections with patients and has come in just to visit. She has sat at the bedside of dying patients and has stayed late to be sure a patient wasn’t alone. The Friday night patient support shift is not an easy one to fill but it has always been covered since Sandy became a volunteer.

Sandy has become a very important part of the Hospice House team by being an advocate for the patients and a wonderful ambassador for the hospice proSee Health on page 9.

Advocates for Children teamed up with the Lewiston Department of Health and Human Services to open a Children’s Room. Located in the DHHS waiting room, the children’s room allows children birth to 10 years old to be in a safe and educational space while they wait for appointments with their parents at DHHS. The toys and furniture were purchased in part with a grant provided by The York Children’s Foundation.

Young Author Helps Peers Find Success in Transition

The transition from elementary school to middle school can be tough on kids, but one young author is making it a little easier with her latest book.

Marrae Kimball, an eighth-grade student who has already written two other books, has just released her third, titled The Secret Combination to Middle School: Real Advice from Real Kids, Ideas for Success, and Much More! The juvenile nonfiction book gives students the tips and advice they need to make their middle school years great in terms of their grades, social life and extracurricular activities.

“Going from elementary school to middle school isn’t easy, and I wanted to write a book that covered my experiences and what I found helpful as I made the transition,” said Kimball, who lives in Maine. “I know what it’s like to start your first day in middle school, including the combination of excitement and nervousness. I want kids to know that this doesn’t have to be a frightening time, but rather a chance to become more mature and make new friends that may last your entire lifetime.”

In The Secret Combination to Middle School, readers learn that almost all kids are uneasy about attending a new school. It outlines the major differences between elementary and mid-

dle school, including what students should expect and how they can become more organized and responsible.

Perhaps most importantly, Kimball encourages readers to be prepared while remembering to have fun and maintain a positive attitude.

The book also features real advice from a number of middle school students who have successfully made the transition, detailing what their biggest fears were, what they like best about their new school and the opportunities available to them now that were not

From the ancient deserts of the Middle East evolved an animal so pure with beauty, heart, and athleticism that the prophet Mohammed instructed his followers to look after this

battle. Napoleon was noted to ride several Arabians in his conquest. Vizir was a gray Arabian that was given to Napoleon by the Sultan of Turkey in 1805, and declared one of his favorites.

Vizir now resides “stuffed” in the Musée de l’Armée in Paris. Marengo, another gray Arabian, made famous by carrying Napoleon into battle has his skeleton on display at the National Army Museum in London.

tin Van Buren received two stallions from the Sultan of Oman in 1840. Secretary of State William H. Seward (under President Lincoln) was presented two fine Arabians as a gift during the Civil War, and in 1877 Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamind II sent two Arabians to President Ulysses S. Grant as a gift.

In 1908 the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved the first studbook of

the Arabian Club with 12 breeders and 71 Arabians.

In the 1920’s the interest in the Arabian horse had a sudden rise with famous people like actor Rudolph Valentino appearing in such films as The Sheik and Son of the Sheik riding Arabians. Will Rogers was also seen aboard Arabians in his films. In 1930 records showed that more then 710 horses were registered as Arabians, by mid century

10,000 were registered, and by 1970 there were more Arabians in California then in Arabia.

I could write pages on the history of the Arabian horse as the breed is rich in heritage and historic importance. I am also very partial to the breed owning three Half Arabians of my own and always having a deep love and passion for the Arabian breed. I learned to ride on Arabians and grew up

galloping through the fields of Turner on a 21 year old breathtaking flaxen chestnut Arabian mare. It was love at first sight with the Arabian horse and I. The Bedouin precisely maintained the purity of the Arabian and breeding practices were very selective.

Due to this type of practice the Arabian eventually became a prized possession throughout the world.

Great historical figures such as Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Alexander the Great, and George Washington all rode Arabians into

Congratulations to 2012 Edward Little High School graduates Jordan Tate and Ben Bowles who each recently received a $500.00 Auburn Ski Association Scholarship. The annual ASA Scholarships are announced at the June graduation, and are awarded after the recipients successfully complete their first semester of college. Jordan started cross country skiing as a freshman at ELHS. Jordan continued to grow and develop as a skier each of her four years, competing in the KVAC and state meets each year. Jordan’s greatest achievement in skiing was qualifying for a spot on the Maine Nordic Team in 2012 and skiing in Vermont. Jordan is attending the University of New England studying Environmental Science.

Ben was on the ELHS ski team for four years. Ben’s freshman year, the ELHS

boys won the Class ‘A’ State Meet. Ben was on the state team for all four years and scored for the team in 2010, 2011 and 2012; he also received the Coach’s Award all three years. Ben placed in the top 10 in 2011 and 2012, qualifying him for shootouts. In 2011 he was named to the KVAC All Conference Second Team in Slalom. Senior year, Ben was team captain and named to the KVAC All Conference Second Team in both Giant Slalom and Slalom and the 2012 All Conference Academic Team.

Ben is attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute pursuing a degree in Physics and is part of the ski team there.

V. Paul Reynolds Before we begin, you need to know this. A gun expert or ballistics wonk I am not. But I do know a good gun when I use one, and I live to hunt big game.

There isn’t a hunter I know who doesn’t have a preference for gun and caliber. And it would be a rare exception to find a hunter who could not advance some good arguments to support his gun choice when the discussion heats up at deer camp. Years ago, I - a devoted deer hunter in those days with lots of energy - tramped all day long among the cedar bogs and alder runs. I carried a lever action Marlin that shot a .35 Remington. It was the only deer gun for me, and it served me well. Later in life, when my wife retired from the classroom and took up deer hunting, she took over my .35 Remington by marital domain. She still has it. I now carry a Remington bolt action .270 that my late father gave me when he left the deer woods for good.

I wouldn’t trade my .270 for any gun. It works for me. It has proven to be re-

liable, accurate and lethal on all kinds of big game from moose to deer and elk.

Mine is a Plain-Jane rifle with a blemished varnished stock - no checkering - and the old style magazine that doesn’t drop the shells conveniently into your hand.

Newer guns seem to have smoother operating bolts, but I don’t object to the firm lockdown. The trigger pull was impossible when Dad had it, but a gunsmith in St Albans adjusted the poundage down nicely for my taste.

Deer camp debates invariably wind up comparing the virtues of a .270 with those of the vaunted 30-06, America’s most popular big game round.

While it is good fun to banter about the comparative ballistics, including down range velocities and knockdown power, we all know in our hearts that, in the end, both cartridges are lethal, and it all boils down to marksmanship.

According to gun writer Chuck Hawks, the .270 made its debut in 1925 and was created to challenge the popular .30-06. (The .270 is a necked down 30-06). Famous Outdoor writer Jack O’Connor helped make the .270 popular when he recounted the .270’s lightning-quick kills at 300 yards! At that time the .270 was considered to be the flattest shooting big game round in the world, according to Hawks. The .30-06 spits a 180 grain bullet at

The Legendary .270 2,700 feet per second. The .270 releases a 130 grain bullet at 3,140 feet per second. Equally impressive, according to the ballistics students, is the .270’s capacity to sustain its velocity down range: 130 grain bullet registers 2,320 feet per second at 300 yards!

The subject to be used for the Prepared Oration must be some aspect of the Constitution of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.

The same subject and oration used in the Department Contest must be used in the

My late father, a deer hunter who upgraded from an old, shopworn .30-30 to the .270 when I was too young to hunt but still curious, explained to me that he simply “wanted more firepower.” He never studied guns, they were just the tool of the hunt. He bought the .270 on a friend’s say so.

I’m glad that he did. So will one of my boys be one day. That’s the thing about good hunting rifles, .30-06s or .270s. They live on.

Seeking Applicants for National High School Oratorical Contest Scholarship Thus far there are only four high school students in the state of Maine who have entered the contest to win a $1,000 scholarship in the Department of Maine High School Oratorical Contest.

Second place winner receives a $500 scholarship and third place winner receives a $300 scholarship.

The contest will be held February 16th, at 9:00 a.m. in the Thomas College Auditorium at 180 West River Road in Waterville. The snow date is the following Saturday, February 23rd.

Scholarships are awarded to the three finalists.

Each individual state winner certified into and participating in the first round of the national contest receives a $1,500 scholarship, those selected for the second round will receive an additional $1500 dollar scholarship.

The National Contest winner will receive an $18,000 Scholarship, second place will receive a $16,000 scholarship and third place at the National Contest will receive a $14,000 Scholarship.

Scholarships may be used to attend any college or university in the United States. Funding comes from The American Legion Life Insurance Fund.

The main purpose of The High School Oratorical Scholarship Program is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the

The prepared oration must be the original effort of each contestant and must not take up less than eight minutes or more than ten minutes for delivery.

It must be delivered in the English language.

The purpose of the Assigned Topic is to test the speaker’s knowledge of the subject, the extent of his or her research, and the ability to discuss the topic as related to the basic principles of government under the Constitution. The topic will be on some phase of the Constitution of the United States.

The assigned topic must take no less than three minutes and must not exceed five minutes for time of delivery. Each year, the list of Assigned Topics will be made available prior to the contest and posted on the Legion web site at www. legion.org.

Page 12 Museum L-A says: “Get to Work” exploring America’s work history through its new Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit, The Way We Worked that depicts how work spans time, cultures, and economic systems.

What would life be like without teachers, doctors, artists, musicians or firefighters? Every day Americans are hard at work on farms, factories, in homes, at desks or in performance halls keeping our communities thriving. Museum L-A, in cooperation with the Maine Humanities Council and Historic New England, will explore the professions and the people that sustain American society from February 8th through May 4th, 2013.

An Opening Reception, with free admission, will take place from 4 - 7 p.m. on Friday, February 8th.

The Way We Worked, adapted from an original exhibition developed by the National Archives and Records Administration, explores how work has become a central element in American culture.

It traces the many changes that have affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years, including the growth of manufacturing and increasing use of technology. The exhibition draws from the Archives’ rich collections, including historical photographs, archival accounts of workers, film, audio and interactive components, to tell the compelling story of how work impacts our individual lives and the historical and cultural fabric of our communities.

“The Way We Worked fits in perfectly with what we’ve been doing,” said Rachel Desgrosseilliers, Museum L-A’s Executive Director. “Right from the beginning, Museum L-A has been gathering and sharing the stories of lo-

The local community will be further connected to the national exhibit through the display of images and artifacts from local industries, such as banking, journalism, medicine, music and the law to name a few. These objects will relate the types of work, dress codes, tools and technology in Lewiston-Auburn, and how they have changed over time.

An “interactive wall” will invite members of the community to bring in pictures and descriptions of their work, past or present. Children are invited to participate by contributing materials to show how their parents and grandparents worked.

DFD Russell Medical Centers: Highest Ranking Seeking Nominations Community Health Center in Maine, Nation for Business Excellence

In a study conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration on clinical quality measures at community health centers across the U.S., DFD Russell Medical Centers came in first in Maine and the country for its superb commitment to quality care.

DFD Russell is one of nearly 1200 community health centers nationwide; together these centers provide care to more than 20 million people. As a partially federally funded health center, DFD serves many low-income, oftenuninsured patients. The federal government has recently begun measuring the quality of care (clinical quality measures) at these centers to determine whether patients are getting appropriate care.

According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, DFD Russell achieved stellar marks for its work in diabetes control, hypertension control, cervical cancer screenings, and asthma therapy. The study’s results compare the national, average percentages for quality care among all community health centers to the percentages of each individual center. In diabetes control, for example, the percentage of adults, age 18-75, with diabetes, who have their blood sugar under control, is at an average of 70.9%

among community health centers nationally. At DFD, it’s 87.8%. For hypertension control, the percentage of adults, age 18 to 85, with hypertension, who have their blood pressure under control (defined as 140/90) nationally is 63.3%. At DFD it’s 71.16%. For cervical cancer screenings, the percentage of women, age 25 to 64, with at least one Pap test in the prior three years is 57.8% nationally.

At DFD, it’s 82.86%. And finally, for asthma therapy, the percentage of patients, age 5 to 40, who have persistent asthma and who receive asthma drugs, is 69.1% nationally. At DFD, it’s 100%.

How has DFD done it?

According to CEO Laurie Kane-Lewis, it all starts with a focus on the patient.

DFD Russell has been committed to patient-centered, patient-focused care since its founding in 1975.

Kane-Lewis also says it’s due in large part to DFD’s participation in quality improvement activities and in the Patient-Centered Medical Home model. The Patient-Centered Medical Home is a national program for improving primary care; the program promotes the organization of care around patients, work in teams, and the coordination and tracking of care over time. DFD is succeeding by keeping its focus on pa-

tients and their individualized care.

“We have had an Electronic Medical Records system in place since 2001 and were using it meaningfully before ‘meaningful use’ was a buzz-word. We review quality metrics on a monthly basis and work on those numbers to improve outcomes. We have been part of the Diabetes Collaborative (Chronic Care Model) since 2005. We have redesigned our care, our follow up for patients, and our quality improve¬ment process for immunizations, diabetes, and heart/stroke.

We contact patients who have been hospitalized or in the ER within 48 hours.

We have secured grants to improve processes and enhance services such as adding a Patient Assistance Coordinator, Integrated Behavioral Health, and Nurse Care Managers. When we talk about patient-centered care, we mean it. And most importantly, we have exceptional clinicians and an extremely dedicated staff here at DFD.” This is not the first recognition DFD Russell has received for its commitment to quality, personalized care. L/A Students to Compete in LAFF Competition Homeless Youth in Lewiston…Who Are They and What Can You Do, produced by the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council is among the seven films selected to be shown in the last semifinal round of competition in the Lewiston Auburn Film Festival’s first student film competition. Films will be shown at the Lewiston campus of the University of Southern Maine on Westminster Street starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 9th.

The LYAC documentary tackles the too-often overlooked problem of teen homelessness, including talking to a couple of people who have been in that situation.

Edward Little High School has two documentaries in the semifinal round.

Both the product of Shawn Rice’s filmmaking class, Lilly Linscott presents “Dream Big, She Did,” a loving tribute to her older sister Rebecca who struggled with health problems in high school but is now an art student in college in New Hampshire. ELHS sophomore Meggie Wise offers “Over Censored,” a look at what truly defines art and how that can lad to censorship.

Since then he has been sighted on bald hill road, range road, route 26 past pond road, shaker village, possible Hannaford, and on January 25th he was seen on outlet road.

Obie is a Christmas present to our family, so we don’t know him very well yet, but we do know: He is very friendly and gentle, loves other dogs

He ran away one other time after New Years and the lady sat with her dog and he eventually came up to her dog and she reached under his chin to get his collar.

The other day I was checking out different sites and stumbled on the web site that claimed to promote Maine tourism. Before my eyes my home state - the state I know only too well but still love anyway suddenly unfolded before me as an intoxicating and beautiful ‘destination.’

On the home page of this site was a map of Maine with each region a different color. To be carried off to that region all I had to do was point and click.

To begin my journey I clicked “Down East” to read: “Centuries ago the explorer Samuel de Champlain named it L’Isle des Monts-deserts, “the island of barren mountains.” From the splendor of these mountains of Acadia to the spectacular beauty of dawn’s first light in Lubec, Down East will awe you.

Feel the joy of spotting

a whale offshore or an eagle’s nest in Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge.

From glacial rock formations to quaint towns and seldom explored lakes and woods, Down East beckons you.”

I loved being”beckoned.”

Suddenly I didn’t feel like I was living in a cold windswept outpost, where winters lasted for six months and where people were struggling to keep warm and pay their heating bills.

No, I was suddenly in a place of ‘spectacular beauty’ and ‘quiet solitude.’

What a great place to be in January.

Feeling uplifted I then clicked on York County, the Gateway to our state where I read: “Graced with miles of white sandy beaches and acres of farmland and pastoral countryside, the Southern Maine Coast welcomes you. History and geography come together in a montage of images you’ll treasure forever.

After reading that I had all I could do to keep from grabbing my hat and coat and running out the door.

Wanting more I clicked the icon marked ‘Maine’s Highlands:’ “The waters and mountains will lure you here and then lull you into a dreamy serenity. It is a place of natural delights: forested mountains, sparkling lakes, crystal blue skies and starry nights.

Winter brings fantastic snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing.”

Nothing wrong with being lured and lulled but I didn’t want to drive up the interstate to the area around Bangor to experience the ‘dreamy serenity’ they were talking about.

Thinking it was time to head home I clicked the map for Western Maine and - I’m not kidding - this was the opening line: “Imagine you’re a snowflake, one of millions cascading down the ski slopes of Western Maine. You’ll create exciting runs for skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers.”

A snowflake?

Well, be it ever so “flaky” there’s no place like home. n

February is National Heart Month. It is the month when we focus on heart disease in the hope that the focus will continue throughout the year, yet heart disease is still the number one killer in the U.S. Why is that?

I was recently in Scottsdale, Arizona, where I had the exciting opportunity to speak with Dr. Richard Car-

mona, 17th Surgeon General of the United States.

According to Dr. Carmona, obesity is the root cause of many diseases, including heart disease. His answer to the fight against obesity is simple – people need to eat less and walk more. Dr. Carmona himself exercises at least five times a week.

He definitely practices what he preaches.

Often when individuals are diagnosed with high blood pressure, hypertension, high cholesterol and other heart-related conditions, they are instructed to take medication. In most cases they are also instructed to get more exercise and modify their eating behaviors. In my experience many of the people I have worked with on diet and exercise oftentimes are not sure what exercises are best

and what types of eating modifications they should make.

If you have been diagnosed with heart disease, the following exercise tips can help you.

First of all, always check with your physician before beginning any exercise routine.

Exercises that strengthen the heart include aerobic exercise such as biking – upright stationary bike, recumbent stationary bike or road bike are all appropriate. Other heart-strengthening exercises include fast walking, jogging, dancing, step aerobics or any aerobic exercise class. Interval training, which could be a combination of low and high intensity aerobic exercise or a combination of weight training and aerobic conditioning exercises, is

also good, as is jumping rope or any aerobic sport, such as basketball, hockey, and soccer. Another good activity is hiking or basically any continuous movement that causes you to breathe more intensively, making your heart beat a little faster. It is healthy to huff and puff a little bit to challenge your heart.

Weight training is okay, but you must keep the following tips in mind while weight training. It is recommended to use lighter weights with higher repetitions. Always exhale on the exertion in any movement.

In other words, do not hold your breath or strain during weight lifting, as that can elevate blood pressure. It is always best to keep your head above your heart, meaning leg curls, sit-ups and push-ups should al-

A general good food plan should include plenty of fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts and lean meats and fish for a protein source.

Wheat based breads and cereals are better choices for breads and starches based on their nutritional content.

Sweets, sugars and pasties should always be consumed on special occasions and not on a daily basis. n
