CHROMA Hans Hofmann once said, “The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color. Our entire being is nourished by it.” Casper Brindle’s newest series of paintings dives headfirst into this realm, exploring the expressive possibilities of color. Brindle’s works occupy the space where Color Field painting, Light and Space conceptualism and Finish Fetish sensibilities intersect. Borrowing tools and techniques from the industrial complex of California car culture, Brindle applies paint to his surfaces in multiple layers of fine airbrush sprays. The high gloss finishes function as reflective pools that appear to liquify the shimmering stratums of color beneath, while simultaneously sealing them in. The effect is intoxicating. Atmospheric gradations of color are encased in hardened surfaces in a constant push and pull between depth, light and texture. Brindle’s earlier works often utilized tubes of fluorescent lights embedded into the painted surfaces - he has now managed to achieve this effect solely with paint. His expert use of color causes the paintings to glow with energy. In a departure from his last series of more monochromatic paintings, Brindle has pushed his palette to new extremes, exploring more rigorously the relationships between multiple colors at once. The hues Brindle employs are near supernatural highly saturated jewel tones are juxtaposed, ombré rainbow fields vibrate against platinum grounds and atmospheric pearlescent surfaces are punctuated with glowing strips of color. The viewer is enveloped into immersive fields of color that appear to rush beyond the edges of the paintings, evocative of infinite horizons echoing across space. Casper Brindle grew up surfing the beaches along LA's coast during the 1970's and 80's, and worked briefly for Light and Space artist Eric Orr in the late 1980’s. The artist currently lives and works in Los Angeles. This marks Casper Brindle’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.
